ARAGON, LEANDRO R. "LEO" Age 86, passed away Monday, December 15, 2014. He was born in Aragon, NM on February 27, 1928. Leo was a veteran from United States Army and also fought for his country in WWII. He also retired from the US Postal Service. Leo received the 3rd degree knight. He was preceded in death by his father Manuel Aragon; mother Josefina Rael-Aragon; grandmother Atanacia Aragon. Leo is survived by wife of 62 years, Nellie Aragon; two sons, Marty wife Thelma, Gabriel wife Annette; daughter Susie husband Rick; grandchildren, Ruth, Mario wife Julianna, Megan, Jazmin husband Ricky, Aniela; great-grandchildren, Josiah, Santiago, Elias, Joaquin; eight sisters; and two brothers. AVILA, ELVA Age 61, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her beloved sons and family on Dec. 11, 2014, after a heroic battle against cancer. She is survived by her sons, Rudi Cruz and Adrian Cruz; her siblings, Maria Shelley (Dennis), Rudy Vasquez (Elbia), Martha Dovenbarger (Danny), Esther Byrne (Patrick) and Eustacio Vasquez; and her many nieces and nephews. Elva was a dedicated teacher, wonderful colleague and dear friend to many at St. Pius X High School, where she taught for many years. She was a 40-year veteran teacher and was named St. Pius' 2012 Teacher of the Year. Elva is preceded in death by her mother and father, Esther Avila and Guadalupe Vasquez. A Mass will be celebrated on her birthday, Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Holy Rosary Parish, 5415 Fortuna NW. BACA, JOHNNY M. age 83, born in Belen, NM, and a resident of Albuquerque, passed away Monday, December 15, 2014 with his family at his side. Mr. Baca is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Lupe; children, Rafaelita Gonzales and husband, David, Gloria Chavez and husband, Steven, Johnny R. Baca, Libbie Baca and fiance, Roy Leyba, Dianna L. Baca, and Delfinio Dean Baca; children Johnny and Lupe raised, Michael Sanchez, Darlene Harold and husband, Tim, and Mary Lou Garcia; sisters, Mona Flores, Connie Jaynes, and Lupe Hooker; brother, Ruben Baca and wife, Carol; nineteen grandchildren; twenty-six great- grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. BEMIS, WILLIAM E. William E. Bemis, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully in his home on December 13, 2014 with his family at his bedside, three days after his 72nd birthday. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kitty C. Bemis, his daughter, Kristi Bemis-Standoli and her husband, Francesco Standoli, grandchildren, Luca William and Emmy Kay Standoli, his sister, Shirley Nielson, and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Shirley Allen and Eleanor Bemis, his brother Ralph (Skip) Bemis, sister, Florence Hall, and niece, Vanessa Nielson. Bill was an Eagle Scout and an Explorer Leader of the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch. As a member of St. John's Episcopal Church he served as an acolyte. He graduated from Albuquerque High in 1960 and was a member of the tennis team. He joined the Marine Reserves and later began working in the sheet metal trade until he suffered a catastrophic stroke on August 21, 1979. Thus, he began his long journey in rehabilitation to regain his strength and skills. Bill persevered in his recovery and was determined to lead a full life. Several years later, he opened his own Heating and Air-Conditioning business and with hard work maintained a successful business until his retirement in 2004. Bill was relentless in enjoying life with each new day. He enjoyed traveling and seeing new places. He continued to participate in individual sports, enjoyed Lobo Sports, bridge, and socializing with friends. With the help and encouragement of a good friend, Bill began woodworking. He made many treasured gifts, which he enjoyed giving to others. He was admired by many for his determination to lead an active life. He was a most gracious and generous host and enjoyed entertaining his friends. Most of all, he enjoyed his family and spending time with his grandchildren. Bill will be greatly missed and never forgotten by those who knew him. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, December 18, 2014, 10:00 a.m., at Daniels Family Funeral Services, Wyoming Chapel with a reception following. DAMON, ERNIE (NERN) Age 63, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2014. Ernie was a beloved husband, father, Papaw, brother, and friend. DEWITT, JUANDA Juanda Sawyer DeWitt, age 90, died peacefully after a long illness on December 7, 2014. Born near Bridgeport, TX, in 1924, Juanda is survived by daughters Carol Roeske husband Stan, and Gwen Sawyer husband George Bakula; granddaughters Annie Strohl husband Will, and Regina Clifford; great-grandson George Glisson, all of Albuquerque; as well as numerous relatives by marriage. She was preceded in death by her husband, and by her father James Fred Howard, mother Nora Leona (Stoneking) Howard of Odessa, TX, and her sister Donnella (Howard) Totten of San Antonio, TX. Juanda was a spirited Texas tomboy who moved to Albuquerque in 1952 when her husband John Sawyer was transferred to Kirtland AFB. She began a career as an independent insurance agent, and was elected president of the Albuquerque Insurance Women's club and then regional president of the National Association of Insurance Women. She and her family were active in Trinity Methodist Church in the 1950's and 1960's, where she taught first grade Sunday school. With her husband, she joined Civil Air Patrol in 1948 and rose to the rank of Lt Col in New Mexico Wing CAP. She learned to fly while her daughters were in junior high school, and was active in the KAFB Aero Club. When her marriage ended in divorce, she married John DeWitt. They relocated to Phoenix, AZ, in 1970, and she remained there until 2005. She continued in the insurance industry and retired from Fireman's Fund Insurance Company in 1987. In retirement, she read voraciously and traveled to visit family. She returned to Albuquerque in 2005 to be near her daughters, and enjoyed her extended family. In her last years she enjoyed dancing and flirting with her family and caretakers, listening to big band music, and eating chocolate. The family is grateful for the excellent care and friendship Juanda received at Montebello on Academy and The Retreat in Rio Rancho. DOWLER, KEITH E. Age 80, passed away Saturday, December 13, 2014. The youngest of three children, he was born in Las Vegas, NM to Keith B. and Doris (Hart) Dowler. He was preceded in death by his parents. Keith is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Consuelo; son, Ron and wife Debora and grandsons, Charlie of Rio Rancho, NM, Joe and great-grandson, Thomas of Hubert, NC; daughter, Susan and husband John Fullinwider and grandchildren, Paul and Katie of Rio Rancho, NM; two sisters, Mary Jane Miller of TX, Phyllis Dowler of Albuquerque, NM; sister's-in-law, Virginia Wildenstein of Colorado Springs, CO, Peggy Wright of Albuquerque, NM, Grace Mammina and husband Ben of St. Joseph, MI; numerous nieces and nephews. Keith graduated from Las Vegas High School and began working for the AT&SF Rail Road in Las Vegas, The Charles Ilfeld Co., and ACF Industries in Albuquerque. He graduated from New Mexico Tech in Socorro, NM, receiving a degree in Metallurgical Engineering. In 1965 he established a Metallurgy Lab at Fairbanks-Morse Research Center in Beloit, WI. Upon returning to New Mexico in 1979, he was employed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory as Group Leader in the MST Division and retired to Rio Rancho in 1994. He and Consuelo enjoyed traveling, playing golf, camping and dancing. Keith was considered to be a "Renaissance Man" with the many talents and diverse interests he had. Besides producing the most tasty Biscochitos in New Mexico, his homemade breads, beef jerky and wine were always a special treat. His other areas of expertise included leather tooling, carpentry, gardening and painting. He was member of the New Mexico Mountain Man Brigade where he competed with muzzle loader black powder guns, some of which he built. He was assigned to portray the role as "Parson Dowler" by the Mountain Man group where he was called upon to perform wedding ceremonies at camp and other parson related duties. Keith was the "life of the party" and you could always count on there being music, dancing, laughter and teasing when he was present. He never met a stranger always bringing out the best in everyone with his outgoing personality, smile and humor. Cremation has taken place. ECONOMIDES, JAMES KIMON, DDS, MSD Age 79, passed from this earth to his heavenly home with his Lord Jesus Christ on December 8, 2014. Jim was born June 23, 1935 to his parents, Kimon and Era (Griffin) Economides in Alton, IL and spent his early years there. As his family grew, they lived for a short time in Glendale, CA before migrating to Albuquerque. He attended Jefferson Jr. High and was part of the first class to complete four years at the brand-new Highland High School where he met his high school sweetheart, Renee Lewis. He was a very talented, left-handed baseball player (acquiring the nickname "Lefty") playing for both Highland and American Legion baseball. He received a baseball scholarship to UNM and joined the SAE fraternity. He was an outstanding hitter and was the "Skyline" batting champion in 1956. During the summer he played semi - pro ball in Colorado and Kansas. He was inducted into the Lobo Hall of Fame in 2011. He and Renee married December 3, 1955, and the following summer he went to Marine PLC camp in Quantico, VA. After graduating from UNM in 1957, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the USMC, and he and Renee drove first to Quantico, VA and a month later went to Pensacola, FL where he went through flight training, flying many different aircrafts. After receiving his "wings", he was selected to fly helicopters. The next two years were spent in Santa Ana, CA where his first daughter, Lisa, was born. He spent about a month on a carrier, taking off and landing during the Laotian conflict. He was released from active duty in 1960 and moved back to Albuquerque where he became the PE coach at Hodgin Elementary for a couple of years. He built an obstacle course there (fashioned after his marine training) and took students hiking and camping. One summer he taught training for the "Peace Corps". His second daughter, Cheryl, was born in 1961. He took up the sport of "handball", the beginning of a lifetime endeavor. He decided to go to dental school at Baylor in Dallas and moved his family there for seven years until he completed his orthodontic training in 1972. Returning to Albuquerque he set up a practice in NE Albuquerque and began a very successful career as an excellent orthodontist, providing beautiful "smiles" for thousands of children and adults who called him "Dr. E.". He bought a plane and utilized his flying experience by flying his staff to the Zuni Indian Reservation to treat patients who could not travel to Albuquerque. In his free time he played a lot of handball, traveling around the US, Canada and Ireland, winning many National and World titles (his last one in 2010). He wrote numerous articles for the "Journal of Orthodontics" and spearheaded a team of doctors to develop a low-cost, portable 3-D imaging mammography machine. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Lisa Mullaney. He is survived by wife Renee; daughter Cheryl Armstrong and husband Rob; eight grandchildren: Jack Mullaney, Jamie (and fiance Josh Kopchick), Sean, Jessica, Josiah, Keri, Cheri and Danae Armstrong. He is also survived by sister Lana Ross and husband Charlie, brother Paul Economides and wife Mary, sister Katherine E. Preonas and husband Diamontis, sister-in-law Marcia Veatch and husband Floyd along with many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at FRENCH - Wyoming. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 8600 Academy NE, officiated by Rev. Don Wilson. A reception will immediately follow the funeral service and interment will take place at 2:30 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE with military honors provided by the United States Marine Corps. GARCIA, TINA Ernestina (Tina) S. Garcia, 80, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2014 in Albuquerque, NM. She was born in Winslow, AZ on February 25, 1934. She is preceded in death by her father Gilberto Salazar and mother Elisa Baca of Winslow, AZ. Tina is survived by her longtime friend Edwin Martinez; five children: Patrick Garcia and wife Margaret of Belen, NM; Linda Sanchez and husband Jonathan of Albuquerque, NM; Daniel Garcia of Albuquerque, NM; Darlene Critelli and husband Philip of Albuquerque, NM; and James Garcia and wife Robyn of Albuquerque, NM; eight grandchildren: Martin Martinez, Mark Martinez, Danielle Garcia, Samuel Garcia, Jessica Critelli, Jennifer Critelli, Ashley Critelli and Abigail Garcia; and five great-grandchildren: Alyssa Gallegos, Andres Martinez, David Martinez, Valaria Martinez and Marco Martinez. GUTIERREZ, DANIEL A. Daniel A. Gutierrez Esq. passed away on December 11, 2014. He was born on November 20, 1970. He graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1989. He attended New Mexico Highlands University earning a B.A. in Political Science/History in 1994. He then went on to earn his Juris Doctorate from the University of New Mexico in 1997. He was a member of the New Mexico State Bar Association, where he served as President of the Fourth Judicial District. HERTEL, JILL G. a resident of Albuquerque since 1982, died on December 9, 2014. She is survived by her husband Guy S. Hertel and her son Guy S. Hertel Jr. Jill was a nurse for 36 years employed by Lovelace and Presbyterian Hospitals. She was also the Chief Nurse of the 150th Medical Group and retired at the rank of Colonel from the New Mexico Air National Guard in 2000. A memorial service will be held 10:00 AM on Friday, December 19, 2014 at FRENCH - Lomas. Burial with full military honors will take place at 12:45pm, at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.

HONTAS, JAMES MIKE Born: June 7, 1929 Died: Dec. 12, 2014 Beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away of natural causes, surrounded by family at home; he was 85 years old. He is survived by his wife Vicki; children; and grandchildren. Jim worked 32 years as shop supervisor at the University of New Mexico Physics and Astronomy department. After graduating Albuquerque High in 1947, Jim started playing double bass for the Albuquerque Symphony Orchestra, then played with several dance bands and combos. Later he played with the Roswell Symphony, San Juan Symphony, Southwest Symphony, El Paso Symphony, and the Las Cruces Symphony. He also performed with the Bloomsburg University Chamber Orchestra at Sea, Chamberre in the Mountains, and Eastern New Mexico University Orchestra. Locally he played with the Albuquerque Civic Light Opera, Albuquerque Philharmonic Orchestra, UNM Faculty Follies, and chamber group 'Quartetto Con Brio'. Choral groups started with 'The Enchanters', then the UNM Chorus, performing at many venues in the US including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York City. He also performed with the Albuquerque Festival Singers throughout Europe. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Albuquerque Philharmonic Orchestra or the UNM Chorus. KELLEY, THOMAS W. Thomas W. Kelley, 75, beloved husband, father and grandfather, was called to his eternal resting place on December 13, 2014. He entered this world on July 15, 1939 in Albuquerque, NM, born to Willis J. A. Kelley and Ruth E. Morrell Kelley. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth A. Kelley; daughter, Julie L. Kelley; sister, Loretta Kelley; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Thomas served honorably in the USMC from 1957 to 1963. MCLAUGHLIN, DEBRA LOUISE A Memorial service for Debra McLaughlin is scheduled for 5 pm Wednesday, January 7th at the Albuquerque Garden Center. McLaughlin, 61, passed away Wednesday, November 19th, 2014 at UNM Hospital in Albuquerque, NM. The Services will be open to all friends and family from 5-6 pm. Debra was born in San Francisco, California to Joyce and Harold McLaughlin. She was raised in Kansas City, Missouri, where she graduated from West High School. Debra went on to study Psychology, Sociology, and Management, in her pursuit of higher education. She was an advocate against Domestic Violence and Animal Abuse, devoting much of her time to numerous shelters. Debra also worked as a Compassionate Care Giver to the elderly and disabled, and enjoyed her time with her patients dearly. Debra is survived by sister Sheila and husband Ricardo Beraum; brother Mike Yoakum; brother Jeff and wife Cindy Joslin; son Jason and wife Kyra McLaughlin; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous extended families. SALAS, CIRILIA D. Age 86, beloved and devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt was embraced by the Lord, Friday, December 12, 2014. She was lifelong resident of Bernalillo, NM, where she was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, Spanish choir, and Blue Army. Cirilia will be fondly remembered as a soft spoken, kind, loving and caring person to all those whose hearts she touched. She was preceded in death by her parents, Abel and Abranita Dominguez; her husband, Eustaquio Salas; and three of her children, Clara, Alex, and Dolores Salas. Cirilia is survived by her loving children, Edwina Diane Montoya and husband Ray, Lawrence Salas and wife Barbara, Margaret Garcia and husband Johnny, Frances Taylor and husband Vince, and Martin Salas and wife Jeannette; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great- grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister Claudina Dominguez; numerous other relatives and a host of friends. Cirilia will be greatly missed by all. Visitation will Thursday, December 18, 2014 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 301 Camino Del Pueblo, in Bernalillo, NM, where a Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Final Viewing will be Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. also at the Church, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Sorrows Cemetery. Casket Bearers will be Aaron Salas, John Patrick Garcia, Joseph Garcia, Richard Taylor, Jared Salas, and Joshua Salas. SHELDON, JOHN E. Age 83, left this world on December 14, 2014 to be with his Lord and Savior. SMALLEY-MCDONAGH, JOYCE Age 66, died December 15, 2014. She is survived by her husband, Warren Smalley; her son, Declan Smalley and wife, Marissa; grandchildren, Trenton and Asha; siblings, Dennis McDonagh and wife, Lori, Lawrence McDonagh and wife, Lee, William McDonagh and wife, Karen, Mary Ellen Shutes and many other family and friends. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Anna McDonagh; brothers, Kevin, James and Thomas. She was a graduate of The Villa, a private catholic girls school east of Youngstown and received her Bachelors in Business at Youngstown State University. Joyce began her career with The Hartford Insurance Co. in Boston, then Baltimore and later in Kansas City and Minneapolis with Great American Insurance Companies as Property and Inland Marine executive manager over several upper midwestern states. Her professional degrees were, CPCU (Charter Property Casulty Underwriter) and CIC (Certified Insurance Counelor). After moving to Albuquerque in 1991, she concentrated her efforts raising their beloved son, Declan while being very supportive of her husbands career. She found part time work in Jeanne's retail gift shop and later as a bookkeeper for the William J. Lock legal firm. Joyce was very active in the AW-BJ Chapter of the PEO, an international organization providing education for women of all ages, raising funds and sending many women to college and graduate school. Her greatest outside interest was her church. She was involved in many volunteer activities at St. Marks on the Mesa and over the past five years helping to found Christ the King Anglican Church in Albuquerque and Wellspring Anglican Church in Rio Rancho. At Christ the King she served as vestry person and then as Sr. Warden helping lead and guide the church in finding a new location and hiring a new priest. A Memorial Celebration will be Monday, December 22, 2014, 1:00 p.m. at Christ the King Anglican Church, 529 Jefferson St NE (at Lomas), Albuquerque, NM 87108. SPENCER, ALFRED JOHN Age 78, a resident of Albuquerque, died December 11, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Spencer; son, Alan Spencer and wife, Barbara; daughters, Lynne Wood and Lori Spencer; grandson, Jordan Wood; granddaughters, Rachel Wood and Maya and Emily Spencer; sister, Janet Spencer; and nephew, Gary Spencer. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, William and Bertha Spencer, and brother, George Spencer. Alfred was born in Reynoldsville, PA on May 28, 1936. He graduated from Altoona High School and enlisted in the Air Force in 1954. While in the military, he attended the University of Maryland. He received a Joint Chief of Staff Commendation Medal at the Pentagon and a Bronze Star in Vietnam. He retired from the Air Force in 1974 after 20 years and attended the University of Albuquerque, where he received a bachelor's degree in Accounting. Alfred worked for the IRS as a Revenue Agent until 1990. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. The family thanks the staff of Mi Casa at La Vida Llena for their loving care and support. STRAIN, MACON LOUISE Macon Louise Strain, age 77, born on June 7, 1937, passed away on December 11, 2014. She was a resident of Jemez Springs, Moriarty and Rio Rancho. Louise was preceded in death by her loving husband Harold Edward Strain. Ed and Louise raised three sons: Terry Strain of Lake Arthur, NM, Lonny Strain of Ponderosa, NM and Anthony and wife Wendy Strain of Los Alamos, NM. Louise made her home of twenty two years in Jemez Springs and in Moriarty for four years with the rest in Rio Rancho, NM. Louise was active for thirty or more years with the American Legion; was a Deacon and Elder of her church's, and very active in serving on the Session. A Navy wife for twenty-one years and active in many other groups and functions during her previous life time. She was a very proud grandmother and loved her family so dearly. Memorial Services will be held at the Rio Rancho Presbyterian Church, Saturday, December 20, 2014 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the church at 1004 24th Street, Rio Rancho, NM 87124. The memorial contributions will be used for the Church's youth programs. TORRES, LYRIE R. Lyrie R. Torres, 89, passed away on Sunday, December 14, 2014. Lyrie was born on October 7, 1925 in Belen, NM. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Luis Torres and her parents, Adan and Elsie Romero. She is survived by her brothers, Adam Romero and Bobby Romero; her son, Luis Juan, Jr. and wife, Deanna Torres, and their children, Joy Lynn, Lyrie Ann Baker and her three daughters, Tristan Torres and daughter, and Tim; her daughter, Lorraine Torres and her son, Bryan Hoefler and wife, Tasha and their two sons; Laura Villanueva and her daughter, Joy Lynn; son, Leonard Torres and his wife, Jackie, their children, Joshua, Jonathon, Justine, Frank, and Isabella; sister-in-law, Gertrude Torres; as well as many nieces and nephews. Lyrie was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church and Church of the Ascension. She was also a board member and volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul Society and served as a board member for Belen Senior Citizens. Lyrie was a member of the Sacred Heart Legion and Beta Sigma Phi and held many offices within Beta Sigma Phi. VILLANUEVA, FERMIN T. Born November 14, 1919, in Hatch, NM. Mr. Villanueva was a lifelong parishioner of San Felipe De Neri Church. Mr. Villanueva was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years Josie D. Villanueva; daughter Cecelia R. Villanueva; parents Faustin and Raquel T. Villanueva; sisters Eleanor Villanueva, Sofia Arviso, Rosa Maez, Ida Tafoya; brother Ruben Villanueva; stepsister Maria Victoria Alvarez and step-brother Max Alvarez. He is survived by two sisters, Odilia Maldonado and Margaret Martinez; and many numerous nieces and nephews.
