ADAM, FRED C. Age 66, died on October 8, 2014 after a brief illness. He loved his family, being outdoors, good jokes, talking about baseball, bragging about friends, and playing brainy games. He spent eight years in Iraq and grew to love and respect the country's people and culture. Fred had a life-long love of the outdoors. An avid birder, he and his friend Cindy Foster chased birds from the mountains to the Bosque del Apache and he visited the Rio Grande Nature Center almost daily. ADAMS, PAUL HENRY age 92, died November 16, 1914. His wife of 53 years, Harriet Withers Adams preceded him in death, as did his parents John Amos Adams and Helen Belle Shields Adams. He is survived by his children Amie Green of Roswell, NM, Paul H. Adams Jr. of Bloomfield, NM, Helen Wicker of Orlando, Fl, Meg Adams-Cameron of Albuquerque, NM, foster daughter Robin Mitchell and her three daughters; six grandchildren Scott Adams, Stacie Boswell, Bryce Green, Julia, Michael, and Susanna Wicker, and two great-grandchildren. He graduated from UNM (Mechanical Engineering, BS-1944 MS-1965) and served in the US Navy during WWII on the USS Lexington. Paul worked at Sandia National Labs for 35 years, retiring in 1983. Of his unclassified work, there was a project called the "rocket sled" and early solar energy research in the 1970's that included a large solar tower still on lab property today. It was this work that took him and Harriet to the Pyrenes in 1976, for testing a solar tower built there. He was an active member of the American Society of Experimental Stress and Strain Analysis, transcribing and editing conference proceedings, long before computers made that trivial. He co-authored a text on experimental stress analysis for university students and working mechanical engineers. In Albuquerque, he and Harriet enjoyed playing bridge, listening to symphony and opera, attending Bible studies and "Round Up" a young-married's group at First United Presbyterian Church. He was an avid fly fisherman, tying his own flies and often catching trout for dinner out of the Jemez River at the back of his retirement home. He loved to fish with his son along streams in Southern Colorado, wading from one beaver pond to the next during family summer vacations in his camper and truck. He retired full-time to live in his beloved Jemez Mts. where he tended fruit trees and a large vegetable garden. The mechanics of clocks continued to fascinate him, so he often repaired them and built a paper model of the gears. He expanded his woodworking hobby and built grandfather clock cases and small pieces of furniture for family members. He volunteered his skills renovating and maintaining the Presbyterian Church, established by his grandfather in Jemez Springs. A service in remembrance of his life will be held Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 11:00a.m. at the Jemez Springs Presbyterian Church, Hwy 4, Jemez Springs, NM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church and sent to PO Box 97, Jemez Springs, NM 87025

SHAW, VERONICA LYNN Mrs. Veronica Lynn Shaw of Albuquerque, passed away quietly at 2:28 on 19 November at the University of New Mexico hospital. Her husband of 37 years, Brian Andrew Shaw, and children Jacob Christopher, Jessica Marie, and Adrianne Nicole were at her side. Born on Aug 28 1961, she passed to eternal light at age 53, just short of her favorite holidays Thanksgiving and Christmas. She was a gifted professional baker (and artisan of treats!). Her incredible work ethic was only surpassed by an unbounded love of her family. Mrs. Shaw was a passionate people person who at 4'11 was able to strike up conversations with anyone, often complementing complete strangers on their unique dress or tattoos. Her passions included entertaining, concern for the sick, and serving at the Albuquerque Balloon Festival - for 16 straight years - where she was affectionately known as "The Light Lady" taking care of grounds preparation and safety lights. Her hunger for justice and fairness will live on by those that loved her and worked beside her. In addition to her husband and children she is survived by grandsons Isaiah, 7, Angelo, 14, and Angel 15; her parents Ramon Sr. and Marcella Baca; siblings and their spouses, Ramon Baca Jr and Dixie , Suzanne and Joseph DeLao, and Christopher and Carla Baca. She was beloved by her brother and sister-in-law, Daniel and Felicity Shaw as well as by her husband's sisters and husbands: Kathleen Blakely; Rebecca and Sean Kenny; and Amanda and Morgan Whitehouse. She was also the proud aunt of over two dozen nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the University of New Mexico Hospital physicians, nurses, and staff for their l during the 4 days of unexpected treatment preceding her passing. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to the Wounded Warrior Project. Details for a celebration of life are pending and will be shared by the family when finalized. SMART, GLADYS BLACK passed away peacefully on November 20, 2014, at age 106, surrounded by her beloved family. She was born to Albert Franklin Black and June Adkins Black in rural Myra, West Virginia, on August 23, 1908, at the home of her paternal grandparents. Following her father's election as clerk of Lincoln County in 1914, the family moved from their country home to the county seat of Hamlin. Gladys, now seven, attended public schools for the first time, where her mother's home teaching led to her rapid advancement. She attended the new Carroll High School and graduated with honors. Gladys enrolled as a freshman at nearby Marshall College in Huntington, WV. But in March 1926, the family decided to move to Roswell, NM, hoping to improve her mother's declining health. Their stay in Roswell proved short because her parents wanted Gladys to continue her education in Albuquerque at UNM, then a small university with an excellent faculty. There Gladys was elected to Alpha Delta Pi, Sigma Alpha lota, and Mortarboard. She remained active with these groups after graduation in 1929 and served on the UNM Alumni Board for several years. After graduation, Gladys accepted a teaching position with APS at Longfellow School. A year later, she went to Bush Conservatory in Chicago for a music degree. Returning to Albuquerque, Gladys taught Music and English at Lincoln Junior High School before moving to Washington Junior High. When WWII began, Gladys started three years' service in the American Red Cross as Hospital Recreation Director at Fort Bliss, Biggs Field, Fort Leonard Wood, Camp Grant and Brooke Hospital in San Antonio. Once back home in Albuquerque, Gladys was appointed State Secretary for the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Traveling around New Mexico engendered her lifelong devotion to New Mexico, its people, scenery and history. Gladys also volunteered with the YMCA travel committee. Then she was persuaded by Charles Renfro, P.E. and Recreation Director, to return to APS to help establish a recreation program for the city schools. Through her acceptance of this offer, Gladys met Capt. Warren A. Smart, ROTC Director at Albuquerque High. They were married in March 1949. He was soon appointed to set up Valley High School as its first principal. In 1955 he died unexpectedly following surgery. Gladys considered her greatest asset to be her friends and family, her greatest joy traveling in New Mexico, and her greatest achievement raising, with the help of family and friends, three rewarding children, Sharon Smart Neuman (Dick), Warren Smart, and Kathy Smart Morgan (Bill). She is survived as well by four grandchildren, Owen Kellum, Sarah Rohde (Aaron), Emily Lamberson (Steve), and David Morgan as well as four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by sisters Jan Black Roche and Alta Black Briscoe and by brothers Al Black and Ed Black. Services will be held Tuesday, November 25 at 11:00 a.m. at First Methodist Church, 314 Lead Ave. SW, with reception and burial to follow. Her family sends special thanks to Margaret Fell of Special Live-in Care as well as Rita Christopherson. Kusang Chodon, MaryAnn Bogdonovich, and Sharon Jolly for their loving care. Instead of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the McCurdy School, 261 S.
