ELLIS, ROBERT M. Robert (Bob) M. Ellis passed away on September 13, 2014 in Albuquerque, NM at 92. Bob Ellis was born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 14, 1922, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, studied art on the GI Bill in Mexico City, and also quietly and emphatically influenced the course of art in Los Angeles and New Mexico. Over six decades, he wore many hats including navigator, painter, designer, educator, fundraiser and museum director. After three years in architecture school, he joined the Navy Construction Division (Seabees), where he built bridges, air strips and roads. After the war, he graduated from the Cleveland Art Institute and traveled to Mexico, where he received his BFA in Art. Like many of his generation, Bob absorbed the vitality of the powerful combination of Mexican culture and surrealism. As a student in Mexico, he encountered the works of Rivera, Orozco and Siqueiros and produced paintings in their strong figurative tradition. His departure from those influences, however, came in a series of works on the subject of a merry-go-round that fused the Cubist/Futurist formal tradition with the image of carnival and childhood memories of the medieval armor collections at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Moving to Los Angeles in the 1950's, Bob served as Curator of Education at the Pasadena Art Museum, did graphic design for many, including the California Design Catalog, spent a year painting in Paris, and taught at the University of Southern California. He received his MFA from the same institution. After joining the UNM Art Department, he worked as Assistant Director and Director at the UNM Art Museum in Albuquerque for seven years. He was a professor at UNM for 23 years. After retiring from UNM in 1987, he moved to Taos to paint and became the Director of the Harwood Museum for 12 years. In 1998, he received the New Mexico Governor's Award for support of the Arts, the UNM Regents Meritorious Service Award and the Local Treasure Award. In 2010, the Caroline Lee and Bob Ellis Gallery was inaugurated at the Harwood Museum, honoring Bob's avid dedication to the museum, its education program and his lifelong passion for art. One of his most beloved roles was participating on the Board of Directors of The Mandelman-Ribak Foundation. In 2003, Bob moved back to Albuquerque, where he continued to paint and exhibit works until his death. His work is in numerous collections including the Albuquerque Museum, Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe and the Roswell Museum. Bob married Hazel Taylor Ellis in 1948; in 1958, he married Barbara Shannon Ellis with whom he raised her children, Derek and Wendy. In 1991, he married Caroline Lee, enjoying more than 12 years of partnership and romance until her death in 2003. He is survived by Derek Shannon (Gail), Wendy Shannon (Rick Higgins) and Caroline's daughters, Holly Adams and Erin Adams (Mike Corney), and numerous step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, past students and loving and devoted friends. A celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at 3 p.m. at FRENCH - Lomas, 10500 Lomas Blvd, NE. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Robert M. Ellis to the Outpost Performance Center or Taos Harwood Museum. There will also be a memorial service for Bob in Taos at a later date. HERVEY, LEAH Leah was born in Lewistown, PA, in 1923. She had a sad childhood. When she was 8 years old, she and her siblings became "County Kids", living with families who needed extra hands. Her parents simply gave them away because they could not feed them during the Depression. Despite moving from family-to-family, she was chosen to be Valedictorian of Milroy High School. She married and had six children. Three of her children, Ellen, Steve and Guy, have preceded her in death. Leah's second husband, Harry, moved their family to NM in 1962 to start a new life. She graduated from NMHU in 1973 and joined the Peace Corps. She helped deliver babies near Liberia, Africa. In retirement, they became RV "full-timers", traveling all over the country, visiting their kids and making friends everywhere. After settling back in Albuquerque, she could be found at the Senior Centers where she played Scrabble regularly. We will miss you, Mom. You taught us that we make our happiness. We have learned resiliency, acceptance of all people, and gratitude for our blessings. Love from Trudy, David and Josh Merriman, ABQ; Jeanne & Bill Romig, Lewistown, PA; Susan and Ken Johnson, West Palm Beach, FL; Romig, Howard and Hollett families, North Pole, AK; Osborne family, Chesterfield, VA; and many loved ones everywhere.

ZAPLIN, MARK ROBERT NOVEMBER 3, 1952 - SEPTEMBER 17, 2014 Mark Zaplin, renowned art gallery owner, died peacefully at his home in Santa Fe, after a courageous five-year battle with cancer. His family and friends were at his side. Born in Boston to Sylvia Cohen Lovit and Nathan Zaplin, Mark grew up in Newton, Massachusetts. In 1972, he and friends discovered a large collection of photographs by the legendary Edward S. Curtis in the basement of a Boston bookstore. This trove of images, from Curtis's thirty-year project documenting the American Indian, led Mark to the West and to his career as a dealer in fine art. After settling in Santa Fe in 1977, he traveled the United States exhibiting the Curtis works at museums and private institutions. Eventually, his interests and expertise expanded to include historic paintings and works on paper by the explorer artists of the American West. In June of 1987, Mark co-founded Zaplin Lampert Gallery on Santa Fe's historic Canyon Road; through his enthusiasm and effort, the gallery quickly gained recognition as a premiere source for the works of the early artists of the Taos Society and the Santa Fe Art Colony, and for American paintings of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Mark's passions, beyond art, included the Grateful Dead, the Boston Red Sox, fly fishing, rafting the Colorado, and traveling the world. And, as accomplished as Mark was in the art world, his proudest moments were those spent helping people. He always had an open door and, in his "gentle tough" way, an uncanny knack for helping others to get to the heart of their challenges. We will continue to tell "Mark stories," benefit from his wise counsel, be inspired by his extraordinary and quiet generosity, and remember his deep love of family and friends. Mark is survived by his girlfriend, Mary O'Gara, of Atlanta, Georgia; his daughter, Jessica Karlin and husband, Jeremy, and their sons, Myles and Noah of Boston, Massachusetts; his daughter, Sylvie Zaplin, of Santa Fe; his brother, Alan Zaplin and wife, Hope, of Newton, Massachusetts; his sister, Ruth Zaplin, of Washington, D.C.; his closest friend and business partner, Richard Lampert, of Santa Fe; his former wife, Robin West, and their beloved dog, Mixie, of Santa Fe; and many other loving relatives and friends. Mark wished to share his deep appreciation and gratitude to Drs. Waun Ki Hong and George Simon and their staff and associates at Houston's M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and to the Cancer Institute of New Mexico, in Santa Fe. The service will be held on Friday, September 19th, at McGee Memorial Chapel in Santa Fe at 2:00pm. Private interment will follow. Friends and family may call at Zaplin Lampert Gallery, 651 Canyon Road, Santa Fe, on Friday and Saturday, September 19 and 20, from 5:30-9:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, Texas, 77210-4486. Please designate for research by Dr. Waun Ki Hong.
