LUCERO, DAVID David Lucero, son of Ann Chavez Lucero and the late Gabriel Lucero, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2014, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He retired after a teaching career that included work with APS and charter schools - often making use of his advanced training in the field of special education. He always put the needs of his students ahead of all else. Brilliant with words and lightning fast in repartee, response or humor, he could be sparkingly smart and funny in company or incisive and persuasive in serious discussion or debate. Always there to help others in need, David seemed meticulous about not wanting to impose or become a burden when he needed anything for himself. Friends will always remember and be inspired by his efforts to help others who were in need or who were down on their luck. He willingly did whatever he could to help those who found themselves the underdog in difficult circumstances. He was not afraid to speak up or pitch in to come to the assistance of anyone faced with injustice. An admirer of Thomas Jefferson, David also seemed to have sworn endless opposition to any form of tyranny over the human mind. He was likewise persistent in doing everything possible to cope with or overcome his last illness. Cancer that had been diagnosed and treated in 2008 was at first considered to be in full remission. But, sadly, his cancer recurred last year and spread, while David did all that he could to cooperate with caregivers and to reassure those around him. Those who loved David and cherished his special gifts to the world are grateful to his care team and the staff of Hospice of the Sandias. David's life will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Thursday, September 11, 2014 at FRENCH - University. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to make contributions in memory of David Lucero to New Mexico Legal Aid, www.nmlegalaid.org or to Catholic Charities of New Mexico, www.ccasfnm.org. WALKER, JOHNNY R. On August 30, 2014, Bernalillo County Fire Fighter, Johnny R. Walker, was called for his last alarm. He is survived by his spouse, Ginger Walker of Cedar Crest; children, Morgan and Madison Walker and Wyatt Briggs; mother Mary and husband Jack Creighton of Belen; brothers, Jerry Walker and wife Beth of New Bern, NC; and Gary Creighton and wife, Ginger, of Portales; sisters, Debra Lewis and husband Hank of Portland, TX; and Sharon Jaynes and husband, Jim of Los Lunas. Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his father, Lee Roy Walker. Johnny, 57, a long-term resident of Cedar Crest was a Lieutenant in the Bernalillo County Fire department and served for 24 years. Johnny was also in the process of becoming a Taskforce Leader for the Wildland Firefighting team when he succumbed to cancer. If you ever heard "Fire Inspection!", Johnny was close by. Most importantly, Johnny had the biggest heart and would never say an unkind word about anyone. He was loved by all who met him and will be missed, especially, as Johnny would say, by his "beautiful bride". Johnny was the love of Ginger's life. Together they shared a vision for their picturesque mountain property; a project on which they were working when Johnny passed. With the help of his brothers and sisters from the Fire Department their vision will become a reality and he will soon be able to view the finished project from heaven. Special thanks to the BCFD Fire Department, BCSO brothers and sisters, and APSPD and APS colleagues who have helped through this time. WARNKE, TERRY P. Terry Porter Warnke, professional engineer and former owner of Piano Source, died after a brief but courageous battle with leukemia on Thursday, September 4, 2014. Terry was born on September 20, 1938, in Michigan City, Indiana, to Vera and Larry Warnke and grew up on a rural farm in La Porte, Indiana. He graduated salutatorian from La Porte High School in 1956. He continued his education at Purdue University and received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in electrical engineering. He played clarinet in the Purdue marching band throughout college, where the band played each year at the Indianapolis 500 opening ceremonies.
