CHAVEZ, ARISTEO (MELVIN) Age 53, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away Friday, August 15, 2014. Melvin is survived by his parents, Fred and Equilda Chavez; children, David Chavez, Christopher Chavez, Julia Chavez, and Olivia Chavez; sisters, Rebecca Ortega, Elizabeth Chavez and husband, Abelino; brothers, Joseph Chavez (Manny) and wife, Geri, Fred (Anthony) Chavez; special friend, Darlene Fernandez; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Melvin was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Olivero and Julia Chavez; maternal grandparents, Magdeleno and Andrea Chavez; and his uncle, Joe Frank Chavez. Melvin was a devoted Catholic and a strong Republican. He truly enjoyed his job at Isleta Casino as a Pit Boss while mentoring and interacting with his customers, and always remembering "It's always showtime!!" He loved playing tennis and was an avid hunter and also loved singing eighties songs to karaoke. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 19, 2014 from 6:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. at Church of the Ascension Catholic Church, 2150 Raymac Rd. SW. COTE, RAYMOND O. Born August 15, 1954, Age 60, of Albuquerque, passed away Friday, August 15, 2014. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Lydia Cote, his daughters; Melissa and Janelle Cote, his mother; Lupe Cote, his siblings; Connie Martinez, Jeanne Barrera, Frances Turrietta and husband, Acasio, Marie Visser and husband, Marlo, and Charles Cote. He also leaves behind many other loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond R. Cote. Raymond graduated from West Mesa High School in 1973. Afterward he served our country in the United States Air Force, later pursuing a career at GE followed by Sandia National Laboratories from which he retired. During his free time he enjoyed fishing, working on cars and fixing things. He had his scuba certification and enjoyed gardening, but most of all he loved his family. Friends and family are invited to funeral services at Our Lady of The Most Holy Rosary Catholic Community, 5415 Fortuna Road NW, on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 with a Rosary beginning at 10:15 am and Mass to follow at 11:00 am. GILSTER, JOHN E. DR. Dr. John E. (Jack) Gilster, DDS, Professor Emeritus of Pediatric Dentistry at the Washington University School of Dentistry and one of three principal scientific investigators of the St. Louis Baby Tooth Survey (1959-1970), died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, Wednesday, August 6, 2014, in Albuquerque, NM. He was 92. The Baby Tooth Survey Scientific advisory group, through the research directed by its principal investigators, quantitatively determined that above ground nuclear testing was poisoning the children of the world. With this evidence, the USSR, UK and US governments agreed to stop above ground nuclear weapons testing with the ratification of the Limited (Atmospheric) Test Ban Treaty in the fall of 1963. President Kennedy, in the conclusion of his address to the nation on July 26, 1963 said in support of the treaty: "Let us, if we can, step back from the shadows of war and seek out the way of peace. And if that journey is a thousand miles, or even more, let history record that we, in this land, at this time, took the first step." Born May 6, 1922, in Chester, IL, Jack graduated from the University of Illinois in 1940 and from Washington University School of Dentistry in 1944. After two years in the army, and three years in general practice with his father (WUSL DDS '18) in Chester IL, he established a private practice in Pediatric Dentistry in St. Louis and joined the faculty of the Washington University dental school in 1950. He taught Pediatric Dentistry, rising through the ranks to Professor of Pediatric Dentistry and Professor Emeritus upon his retirement in 1987. He served as President of the Dental Alumni Association in 1969 and was named a Distinguished Alumnus by the Association in 1977. He was on the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry for seven years (1959-1966) and served as Chairman of that Board in 1966. He was a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, of the International College of Dentists, and of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Jack served as President of the North District of the St. Louis Dental Society as well as President of the Missouri Society of Dentistry for Children. He was Editor of the St. Louis Dental Society Bulletin (1953-1963), editor of the Journal of the Missouri Dental Association (1963-1973) and editor of the Alumni Newsletter (1973-2002). For six years (1963-1969) he served on the ADA Council on Journalism and was President of the American Association of Dental Editors in 1971. He was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Washington University in 1987. Since retirement in 1987, he served as President of the Dental Coalition for Public Awareness and served a board member for the National Federation for Ectodermal Dysplasia. After moving from the St. Louis Area to Albuquerque in 2003, Jack enjoyed the company of many dear friends at Brookdale Place Valencia and delighted in the company of his adoring children and grandchildren. He is the father of three children, John E. Gilster II of Madison, WI, Norman T. Gilster (wife Sharon), of Albuquerque, NM and Elisabeth C. Gilster Velazquez (husband Gregorio Velazquez) of Roanoke, VA; and the grandfather of six brilliant grandchildren, Lucy C. Gilster, Taylor S. Gilster, John E. (Jack) Gilster III, Madalene K. Gilster, Benjamin N. Gilster and Jacqueline C. Gilster. A graveside service will be conducted in Chester, IL at a later date. GONZALES, MARY M. Age 74, a resident of Albuquerque since 1956. She died Thursday, August 14, 2014. She is survived by seven children, son, Bobby Gonzales, and wife, Debra Gonzales; daughters, Dee Dee Sanchez, Theresa Sandoval, and husband, Michael Sandoval, Veronica Lesperance, and husband, Albino, Chrissy Sandoval, and husband Albert, Carmen Soto, and husband, Martin, and Sarah Gonzales; sisters Gloria Palomino, and husband, Joe of Las Animas, CO, Linda Trujillo, and husband, Manuel of Colorado Springs, CO; sister-in-law, Josie Medina of Las Animas, Co; and brother-in-law, John Ortega of Tucson, AZ. Mary has 23 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Gonzales; daughter, Celia Gonzales; parents, Annie and Paul Medina; brothers, Richard Medina, and Delfino Medina; sisters, Louise Ortega, and Martha Medina. HERMOSILLO, BENJAMIN "BENJIE" June 19, 1972 - August 6, 2014 Benjie Hermosillo died in a motorcycle accident in Guadalajara, Mexico on August 6, 2014. He was preceded in death by his father Jesus Hermosillo. He is survived by mother Anna; sister Adrianna (Lucy) Hermosillo-Armijo and husband Alan; brother George; son Benjamin; nephew Allonzo; and niece Alanna. Services were held in Guadalajara.

KERR, BENNETT CURRY HARTER Bennett Curry Harter Kerr, 96 passed away Thursday, August 14, 2014 in Amarillo. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at St. Mary's Cathedral with Monsignor Harold Waldow as Celebrant and Reverend Scott Raef as Concelebrant. Family visitation will be Monday August 18, from 6-7 p.m. Bennett was born May 23, 1918, in Seminole, TX, third of five daughters to B.B. and Mabel Sherman Curry. She is descended from West Texas pioneer folk. Her grandparents were among the original settlers of the Quaker community, Estacado, near Lubbock. She graduated valedictorian of Seminole High School in 1936 and enrolled in Texas Tech College. Bennett married Bob Benson of Tahoka in 1937, but two weeks after the wedding he was killed in an oilfield explosion. She returned to Texas Tech to complete a degree in home economics and married Joe Harter of Marlin in 1940. After his discharge from the U.S. Navy following World War II, they made their home in Lubbock where Joe worked for the Lubbock Avalanche Journal, and Bennett became a teacher. She taught at both St. Elizabeth's and Christ the King elementary schools. After Joe's death in 1971, Bennett continued to teach and made a trip to Europe. In 1976 she married Ralph Kerr, a civil engineer of Roswell, NM. They made their home in Albuquerque for over three decades and did extensive traveling in New Mexico and many western states. They also traveled to Europe and Nova Scotia. Ralph died in 2010. Bennett was an earnest, gracious, cheerful, curious, and open minded person. She was a generous and wonderful mother who loved to quote poetry to her children. She loved to sing. She was an active member of several Roman Catholic parishes during her lifetime including St. Elizabeth's of Lubbock, where she sang in the choir. Her's was one of the founding families of Christ the King parish in Lubbock. She was a member of Our Lady of the Annunciation, Albuquerque, NM. She has been a member of St. Mary's Cathedral in Amarillo for the past six years Survivors include: two sons, Jim Harter of San Antonio, Mike Harter and his wife Monique Dupuis of Amarillo; two daughters, Marty Marmaduke and her husband John, and Barbara Whitton and her husband Jim of Amarillo; five grandchildren: Matthew Harter and his wife Kelli of Canyon, Meg O'Brien and her husband Alex of Amarillo, Owen Marmaduke of New York City, Jacob Harter and Sam Marmaduke of Amarillo. Bennett has three great-grandchildren: Laurel O'Brien, Liam O'Brien, and Elizabeth Harter. She is also survived by her beloved sister Drusilla Curry Cieszinski of Roswell, NM and many nephews and nieces. The family wishes to thank Baptist Community Services and Park Central and particularly the staff of Moore Assisted Living whose good work added to the quality of her life in her declining years. LIBIT, JEFFREY MARC A man of true passions and a deep sense of commitment, passed away early Friday morning at his home in Albuquerque. Jeff spent his life taking care of others -- from family members to friends to professional colleagues -- often at the sacrifice of himself. He was born on May 23, 1945 in the Chicago suburb of Glencoe, Ill., and graduated from the University of Wisconsin and the DePaul University College of Law. He had an irrepressible creative gene and a zest for handiwork. He held numerous patents on inventions ranging from bottle caps to bathtubs. Prior to that, he spent three decades practicing law in Albuquerque. He was the definition of an avid fly-fisherman, and over the years, had probably acquainted himself with every rainbow trout in the San Juan River. He also took great joy in his yearly trips to Alaska. Jeff was indefatigable, overcoming a car accident that doctors said would leave him paralyzed for the rest of his life. His kindness and devotedness will not be forgotten by the many who knew and loved him as a father, husband, uncle, cousin, partner, collaborator, friend and buddy. He is survived by his wife Susan and son Daniel. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at Noon, at Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery, 700 Yale Blvd. SE. ROYCE, LAURA JANE A longtime resident of Albuquerque, NM, peacefully passed away on Friday, August 8, 2014 at the age of 76. Jane was born on June 26, 1938 in Clay Center, KS, the daughter of Howard and Ethel Clark. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She is survived by her sons, Anson Royce and wife, Wendy of Albuquerque, and Morgan Royce and wife, Nicole Custer, of Albuquerque; five cherished grandchildren, Ashley Martin and husband, Simon, of Rogers, AR, Christopher Royce, Josh Royce, Lauren Custer, and Kindell Custer of Albuquerque; and sister, Joan Demeritt of Reno, NV. Jane was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Jevene Ginder of Kingsland, TX. SMITH, BILLY D. Age 80, of Albuquerque, New Mexico passed away peacefully on August 13, 2014 in his home with his family and loved ones in attendance. Born in Hutton Valley, MO to Flossie and Claude Smith, he lived most of his adult life in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Billy was a Korean War Wounded Veteran and after having served his country, went to college on the GI Bill, first at Bakersfield Community College, then completed his business degree at Southwest Missouri State College in Springfield, MO. After college, Billy and his wife Carolyn moved to Scottsdale, Arizona where they started a family with two children, Jennifer Bryant and Todd Smith. Working for the Comptroller of the Currency, they relocated to Albuquerque, NM where he would spend the remainder of his career working with national and local banks as well as the Veteran's Administration. Billy lived and enjoyed a life of golf, playing for over 50 years and had two holes-in-one in his golfing career. Billy is survived by his wife Carolyn; daughter Jennifer (Phillip) Bryant; son Todd (Renee) Smith; brothers, Don (Verna) Smith, Richard Smith; sisters, Mary Alice (Wayne) Norris, Carolyn (John) Tapley; as well as one grandchild (Chase); many loving nieces and nephews, and extended family. SPAETH, MEL Age 90, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2014 at his home, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on March 9, 1924 in Brooten, MN to Johnny and Clara Spaeth. There is so much to be said about Mel, who lived a long, exciting, and wonderful life, that it would take multiple pages to share. This memoriam will be an attempt to highlight the amazing life of Mel Spaeth, and those who were a part of his journey. Mel grew up in Minnesota where he graduated high school. At the height of World War II he answered his country's call to duty, was drafted into the United States Military, and joined the Navy in 1943. He excelled in the Navy as a Pharmacy Technician and served until the end of WWII in 1946, achieving the rank of Petty Officer Third Class. After his service to this country, he returned to Minnesota to the woman who first caught his eye and heart a few years before, who had facilitated his draft board. Mel Married his first wife Rose in 1947. Soon after, they moved to Portland, OR where three of their five children were born. Seeking better weather and career opportunities, Mel and Rose moved their family to San Diego, CA in 1957 where their two younger children were born. Mel, along with Rose, began work for the federal government Public Works Center as civilian employees. Mel worked for the Public Works Center for 35 years and retired with honors and accolades as a computer specialist. In 1998, Mel and Rose relocated to Rio Rancho, NM due to the declining health of Rose and to be near their children. In February of 2001, after 54 years of marriage to his first love and soul mate, he suffered one of his greatest losses by the passing away of Rose. After he took much needed time to heal and adjust being without Rose, he married Mae Monear. Although they had no biological children together, being the honorable man that Mel was, he stepped into the role of Loving Stepfather to Mae's four adult children and Step-grandfather to their children. His marriage to Mae of 4 years ended with her passing away. Mel received various recognition and honors throughout his long land interesting life. When Mel wasn't captivating others by sharing his life adventures and experiences through his unique way of story telling, he enjoyed fishing, world traveling, (loved Hawaii), loved telling jokes, enjoyed being a member of the Elks Lodge and American Legion/VFW, and spending intimate quality time with friends and family. Mel was preceded in death by his first wife, Rose, second wife May, son Johnny Spaeth, and stepson Marty. Mel is survived by his children, Layne Spaeth and wife Jackie of Phoenix, AZ, Chuck Spaeth of Las Vegas, NV, Linda Styler and Pam Byrne of Rio Rancho, NM; stepsons Mike of Minneapolis, MN, Kevin; stepdaughter Polly of Austin, TX; grandchildren, ten; step-grandchildren, three; great-grandchildren, 22; step-great-grandchildren, seven.
