SCANLON, HEATHER MARIA age 53 died on Friday, August 1, 2014 peacefully in her home due to the advancement of her cancer. She leaves her husband, Bob, and her daughters, Taylor and Wesley. She was born on June 14, 1961 in Phoenix, Arizona to parents Don and Ardith Kaiser, both of whom survive her along with all of her brothers and sisters, including her twin sister, Holly. An avid visual artist and graphic designer, Heather's penchant for art allowed her to find beauty in the simplest things and make the simplest things beautiful. Her youthful demeanor and style complemented her natural beauty in a way that always left people underestimating her true age. She was as good a listener as one could ever hope to talk to and equally easy to listen to. She possessed an extraordinary sense of humor that could make the newest acquaintance feel like the oldest friend. Heather always put the needs of others before her own, showing concern for the emotional wellbeing of loved ones more than her own deteriorating health. An unfailingly Godly woman, her faith and her wisdom were an inspiration to all. She was unmatched in each of her roles; mother, daughter, wife, sister, and friend, and she will be dearly missed. A service will be held at Strong-Thorne Chapel at 1100 Coal Ave SE on Saturday, August 9th at 11:00am, and a reception will follow. SIMON, HELEN BARBARA Mother, Mom, Moma to her five surviving children, passed away in her sleep on July 31, 2014 at 97 years of age. She was a walking, talking, living, breathing, Wikipedia, encyclopedia Britannica, spellcheck, grammarian and moral compass. She devoured information, loved baking, Bridge, artwork and music. I think she liked us kids too. Above all she was a lady, a class act that her offspring must strive to live up to. A lady she was but when the cards were dealt, she was a ruthless shark. She was born on November 14, 1916 and died July 31, 2014. She is survived by five adoring children, Joan Brooks, Kathy Puglisi, Greg Simon, Pete Simon and Pattie Cox. The list of grandchildren, great-grandchildren & great-great-grandchildren totals 65, too long to name each. Almost everyone was able to visit or speak with her during her last two weeks of life. She was still her smart and humorous, same card-playing self, until she went to bed and didn't wake up two days before her death. You made your life and your death easy for us and we loved you deeply. Thank you. Services to honor this amazing woman will be held Saturday, August 9, 2014, at Risen Savior Catholic Community, 6701 Wyoming Blvd. NE at 10:30 a.m. A celebration of her life will follow in the Vineyard Community Room at 1:30 p.m., 6118 Edith Blvd NE. Anyone who attends who would like to share a memory is invited to come prepared to do so. For those who are unable to attend and would like to express their thoughts please go to danielsfuneral.com where her obituary will be listed also. Expressions of sympathy may be made in her honor to Hospice of New Mexico, 4015 Carlisle Blvd. NE, ABQ, 87107, Salvation Army, 4301 Bryn Mawr Dr. NE, 87107, or Joy Junction, 320 Gold Ave. SW, 87102. SPURLING, VIRGINIA CATHERINE currently of Albuquerque, New Mexico passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at the age of 94 and half years. She was born December 10, 1919 in Evansville, Indiana. Virginia moved with her husband Willard, now deceased, to Albuquerque in May 2004 to be near their daughter and her family. Virginia and Willard spent all of their lives until the move to the Indianapolis and Greenwood areas. Virginia had 33 years of a wonderful career at Eli Lilly & Company where she made many lifelong friends. She was a longtime member of the Indianapolis Eastern Star. After retirement she spent the next 23 years volunteering one or two days each week at St Francis Hospital and during her spare time at home made blankets for the premature babies at the hospital. With some of her many friends from Eli Lilly, she also spent time golfing, bowling on a team, and many evenings playing cards. Through the years she became a skilled seamstress, a gifted craft maker, and developed a great love for cooking. She especially loved sharing her cooking talents with her co-workers, neighbors and family whom she often entertained. Her cooking and baking skills were shared so often with her grateful co-workers that they presented her with a framed certificate, designating her the recipient of the "The Julia Child Award". She was so proud of the certificate that it hung on her wall throughout her time in Albuquerque. She lived in an independent retirement home for ten years where she became known as the "candy lady", making candy to share with all the staff and residents for holidays and special occasions. In her final days she was cared for by the loving staff of Brookdale Place and hospice care. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Kay Fox and her husband Gary; two granddaughters, Erica Stell and her husband Von of Albuquerque and Gwendolyn Hyder and her husband Perry of Phoenix and four great grandchildren. The Hvder's great grandson is Jackson "Jack". The Stell great-grandchildren include Daniel, Adam and Rachel Catherine. Virginia was very proud because her only great granddaughter was named after her, being given her middle name, Catherine. She loved to attend Rachel Catherine's ballet classes. A private family graveside service will be held at the Veterans National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She will be buried with her husband, Willard. Memorial contributions may be made in Virginia's name to your favorite charity. Arrangements by Direct Funeral Services, 2919 4th St. NW., ABQ, N M (505-343-8008).

WILLIAMS, THEODORE C. (Ted or T.C. to his friends and colleagues), age 90, passed away on July 24 at El Castillo retirement community in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he will be missed by many friends. Ted was born and grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He attended Michigan Technological University for one quarter and then enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the 10th Mountain Division in WWII. On returning from service in Europe, he enrolled in Civil Engineering at Michigan State University, following in his father's and grandfather's footsteps. While there he met and married Dora McKibben, whom he credited with getting him through calculus. After graduation he returned to Grand Rapids to work with his father, W.B. Williams, at Williams & Works. Ted became Chairman and helped to guide that firm to prominence in consulting engineering, urban planning, and surveying. In 1966 he and his family took a year-long working sabbatical to New Zealand, where he assisted the City of Christchurch Drainage Board in establishing an engineering investigations department. Returning to Grand Rapids in 1967, he resumed his leadership of Williams & Works where during his tenure the firm won two national awards for the most significant engineering projects of the year. His first-anywhere plan for using natural wetlands as an integral part of the wastewater treatment process was selected as on of the 10 most important engineering accomplishments in Michigan's history. After retiring in 1986, he and Dora moved to Santa Fe where the condition of the Santa Fe River caught his attention. Drawing on his lifetime of experience as an environmental engineer he devised a visionary plan to restore water to the dry, weed-filled bed of the Santa Fe River, working with the Old Santa Fe Association to promote his scheme. Ted's love of skiing led him to the goal of skiing as many days as his age, which he did until 82. He was also an active member of Rotary, the Winter Sports Alliance, Santa Fe Watershed Association and the Chili and Marching Society. Ted is survived by his wife, Dora, of Santa Fe, NM; his sisters, Harriet of Newtown Square, PA, and Janet (Everett Thompson) of Grand Rapids; a son, Steve (Linda) of Grand Rapids; his daughters, Emily (Mark Ewing), of Newton, MA, and Marcy (Greg Ruppel), of Santa Fe, NM. Surviving grandchildren include Perry (Jason) Pursell, Alexander (Alexandra) Williams, Halley Ruppel, Kelsey Ruppel, Hannah Ewing, and Aaron Ewing, and great-grandchildren Nolan and Ara Pursell.
