HULBERT, JOHN DAVID (ZOOMER) of Grants, New Mexico passed from this life July 13, 2014 in the presence of his family and loved ones and is now at peace with the world. He is mourned by his wife Jean; daughter Spring' grandson Gabe; and great-grandchildren Sam, Emma and Ali; sisters, Mary Louise Holly (Kent, OH) and Margaret Kate Hulbert (Tuscon, AZ). They share the loss with the many, many friends who were touched by his life. Zoomer was born to Kenneth and Helen Hulbert in Kent/Ravenna Ohio, December 10, 1948. After graduating high school, he started a multifaceted career path that invariably involved motor vehicles. Though motorcycles held a special place for Zoomer, whether it had two wheels or eighteen, he probably owned it or drove it and if it had an engine, he could fix it. His ultimate professional satisfaction came with his graduation from college and career as a teacher of special children when he began at age 50. As a man who had goals in life that were advanced and accomplished over decades, he was rare in his ability to relish, enjoy and truly live life in each passing hour. A very self-directed and personal individual, Zoomer touched many with an authenticity that was simple and magical for those near him and his kindness and generosity was a gift to friend and stranger alike. As Zoomer wished, there will be no funeral, but a coming-together celebration of his life at a time soon to be determined. Anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution should do so with the spirit Zoomer would have wanted: Pay It Forward. Give help to someone who needs it and think of your giving as done on the behalf of Zoomer.

PERA, ROD J. Rod J. Pera, Leader in Education, Dies at 73 Rod J. Pera, who led major educational institutions and foundations focused on education in New Mexico and Pennsylvania, died on Monday, July 14, 2014, at his home in Santa Fe, NM. He was 73. His wife, Mary Kay Pera, the past president of the New Mexico Alliance for School-Based Health Care, confirmed his death, the result of cancer. Mr. Pera led the Sandia Foundation, founded in Albuquerque to aid and assist educational institutions, as its Chairman, and was one of the founders of the Bosque School, a private school in Albuquerque where over a third of the student body receives more than $2.0 million in need-based financial support. He began serving on the Board of Trustees of Bosque in 1995. Prior to moving to Santa Fe in 1994, Mr. Pera resided in south central Pennsylvania where, among his many contributions to the community, he served as President and CEO of the Milton Hershey School, the largest and wealthiest pre-college, residential education program in the United States. Mr. Pera cared deeply about the school and worked to modernize the curriculum and approach to education at the Milton Hershey School, which was founded by Milton Hershey in 1909 as a school for destitute white orphan boys. The Deed of Trust was later amended to admit girls and minorities into the School. Mr. Pera's journey to the helm of the Milton Hershey School commenced at his law firm, McNees, Wallace & Nurick, the largest law firm in Pennsylvania's capital, Harrisburg. He served as managing partner at the firm from 1984 to 1992 and worked closely with the Hershey Trust Company, which funds the Milton Hershey School, and with its affiliates, Hershey Foods Corporation and Hershey Entertainment and Resort Company. He served for many years on the boards of all three of these companies and the school, including in the chairman role at the trust and school, and, through these oversight roles, his passionate commitment to education grew. Prior to joining the McNees firm in 1966, he graduated from Hershey Junior College, Dickinson College, Dean's List, and the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Cum Laude, and clerked for Justice Samuel J. Roberts of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Raised in the Hershey area by his mother, the late Marie (Peg) Duffy, Mr. Pera is the grandson of an immigrant from Sorano, Italy who came to the Hershey region as a teenager and worked in the Cornwall stone quarries, stone from which was used to build the chocolate factory. As a youth, Mr. Pera ran the merry-go-round at Hershey Park, the original ride of the famed amusement park and one that has been run by a long line of individuals who went on to become successful professionals. Earlier, in second grade, he met Mary Kay Porr, and the two, who were friends all through Hershey elementary, junior and high schools, and Hershey Junior College, eventually married and just recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary. In addition to his wife, Mary Kay Pera, he is survived by his siblings Al Pera, Jeanne Deimler, and Brenda Pera; daughters Lauren Klingsberg and Lisa Pera, their husbands Ethan Klingsberg and Alan Price; and five grandchildren, Jaime, Elizabeth, Shula, Aaron and Judah. A memorial celebration will be held in the near future in Albuquerque. The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, that memorial contributions be made to the Rod J. Pera and Mary Kay Pera Endowment Scholarship Fund, Bosque School, with a memo to the Fund, 4000 Learning Road, Albuquerque, NM 87120.

ROBB, JOHN DONALD, JR. An award-winning lawyer who was also a passionate and tireless advocate of the poor and homeless, died on July 13, 2014 at the age of 90. He was the much beloved father of John D. Robb III, Celeste Robb-Nicholson, Ellen Bea Robb, Bradford Hight Robb, George Geoffrey Robb, and David Robb. He also leaves 20 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and is survived by his two sisters, Priscilla McDonnell and Nancy Briggs. His wife of 68 years, Peggy, died in May. John moved to New Mexico to be with his parents John and Harriet Robb, who moved to Albuquerque in 1941. John's father was the Dean of the College of Fine Arts at UNM and founded the John Donald Robb Archive of Southwestern Music and UNM's Robb Musical Trust, which John eagerly supported during the past 25 years. John was educated at Yale and UNM, and received his law degree from the University of Minnesota. He was proud to be a partner of the Rodey, Dickason, Sloan, Akin and Robb law firm in Albuquerque, where since 1951 he focused mainly on environmental and natural resources law and litigation. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America and was awarded the Outstanding Lawyer of the Year and also the Distinguished Service Award by the State Bar of New Mexico for his local efforts. At the national level, he served as the past National Chairman of the American Bar Association Committee on Atomic Energy and also as National Chairman of the ABA's Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants which propelled him into a special calling to fight for equal justice before the law for the poor and homeless in our country. He helped establish the Legal Services Corporation, a federally funded program to provide legal aid for those who cannot afford it. Without his persistence, the ABA states that "Legal Services, the Corporation as we know it, may not even exist today". John also served the Christian Legal Society as chairman and director of its Public Ministries Committee, developing and expanding Christian legal aid in many parts of the country and inspiring similar programs overseas. Hundreds of thousands of desperate people have been helped through such secular and faith-based efforts. John was a vibrant follower of Jesus Christ who shined with His light and love, quietly helping people less fortunate than himself with great generosity and humility. He always had an upbeat, positive attitude, encouraging and inspiring all those around him. He felt called to "speak up for people who could not speak for themselves," and defend their rights, as fellow human beings. He will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched. John firmly believed in Jesus' promise, "For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." We have confidence that he is with the Lord that he loved and served so enthusiastically and with the love of his life, Peggy. His memorial service will be Thursday, July 24, 2014, 10:00 a.m., at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 8600 Academy Rd. NE in Albuquerque. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to one of these organizations that John loved and supported: Gospel Justice Initiative, 1750 Grandstand Pl., Ste. 1, Elgin, IL 60123 (legal aid for the poor); Joy Junction, 4500 2nd St SW, Albuquerque, NM 87105 (ministry to the homeless); UNM John Donald Robb Musical Trust, MSC 04-2570 College of Fine Arts, 1 University of New Mexico Albuquerque, NM 87131-0001 (advances his father's musical legacy and the music of the Southwest).
