ALEXANDER, STANLEY GENE (MATT) On January 26, 2014, Matt took his music to the afterlife. His last wish was for all of his friends and family to turn on some music and raise a glass in his name. To honor this wish, a tribute to Matt and his music will be held on Thursday, March 13th, 5:30pm at Molly's Bar in Tijeras. Matt donated his body to research so this will be the only opportunity to gather and share stories. In addition, this is jam night at Molly's so everyone bring their favorite instrument and join us in sending Matt off in style. RIP Matt, you are missed.

Blessed with a loving family, steadfast friends and a beautiful Irish spirit, she was ready to embrace the Lord and reunite with those that preceded her in death, her cherished husband of sixty years, William H. Buck; her two sons, Stephen and Charles; as well as her parents, sister, brothers, grandson and great-grandson. Born in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, Barb and Bill moved to New Mexico in 1954 where they embarked on a life filled with happiness, faith and love. CHAVEZ, ANTONIO (TONY) JR. Age 92, a lifelong resident of Santa Fe, NM, was called into the arms of Our Lord on Monday, March 3, 2014. Tony was born to Maria (Sena) Chavez and Antonio Chavez, Sr in 1921. A memory that stayed with Tony was losing his mother at age 10 and being sent to St. Anthony's Orphanage, a home for boys, in Albuquerque. This was a Catholic School run by German nuns who were very strict disciplinarians. He said to himself, "This experience would come in handy later in the Army." He attended St. Francis Catholic School, Harrington Jr High, and graduated from Santa Fe High class of 1939. Tony was a WWII veteran, drafted into the US Army in 1942, achieving the rank of Sgt in the 447 AAA Battalion. Tony was in the Europe Theatre stationed in England, France, and Germany. He stepped on an anti-personnel mine and was discharged from the Army in 1945 due to his severe injuries that plagued him throughout his lifetime. Tony was decorated with the Europe Africa Middle East Medal with four Clusters, The Purple Heart, The American Campaign Medal, The Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and The French Medal of Freedom. Tony was very proud of his military service and was instrumental in establishing the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 372 in 1966 where he served in an official capacity until 2010. Tony was a mailman with the US Postal Service for 38 years and would often say how much he loved that job. He was a very devout Catholic and a member of the Confradia de la Conquistadora, St Jude League, Sacred Heart League. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and Charter member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart #372 and was also a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, the Union Protectiva, and the Santa Fe Senior Center. He met and married his wife of 40 years, Margarita (Margie) Varela, while they were both working at Bruns Army Hospital in Santa Fe in the late 1940's. From that union, were born three daughters and one granddaughter whom he loved with all his heart. Tony was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and always made sure he did the best he could for his small family. He would take his little daughters for rides in the car to see the lights on Cerrillos Road and then for ice cream at the Mighty Nice ice cream shop where the Roundhouse now stands. When his granddaughter was a little girl, he would often take her for rides around his neighborhood in a little red wagon. That was such a special moment for both of them. Tony instilled strong values in his daughters and granddaughter and taught them to be honest, hardworking, and trustworthy which are values they carry with them to this day. Tony's hobbies were fishing and deer hunting. He enjoyed many hunting trips with his brother Alfonso and his nephew Mike. The family would often enjoy brook trout he brought home from his fishing trips and sometimes venison from his hunting trips. Tony is survived by his loving daughters, Angela Chavez (Roger Hoek) of Albuquerque, Christina Romero (Harold) of Santa Fe, Judy Esparsen (Kelly) of Albuquerque; his one and only granddaughter Vanessa Romero of Santa Fe; his brother Rudy (Patricia) of Florida; his sister-in-law Katie Chavez; nieces and nephews; and special friend Laura Mendoza. The family wishes to express special appreciation to Tracie Alghren, his friend and nurse, and his health care aids Beverly Soto and Bonnie Nieto of whom he was very fond. Preceding him in death are his loving wife Margarita, an infant son, his parents, and siblings Flora Williams (David), Triny (Josephine), Johnny (Bessie), Vito Coca (Tommy), and Alfonso. We will miss our daddy and grandpa more than words can ever express and we know he is in eternal life with our Lord in heaven. Visitation will be Monday, March 10, 2014 from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm with a rosary at 6:00 pm to be recited by the Union Protectiva at Berardinelli Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be recited on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at 10:00 am at The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. Burial service with full military honors will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery on Guadalupe St. immediately following the Mass. Pallbearers are Patriots of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 372. Honorary pallbearers are Ruben Montoya, Pascual Baca, Oscar Jordan, Mike Chavez, Roger Hoek, Harold Romero, Kelly Esparsen, Frank Angel, Dwayne Hoek and Jimmy Chavez. JURGENSEN, GLENYS F. Glenys Jurgensen, 92, died February 21st in Santa Fe. She was born March 8, 1921 in Lindenhurst, NY. Her father Alvin Frevert was a plumber, all-around handyman, and an enthusiastic gardener, a skill and dedication he passed on to his daughter. Her mother Isabella was a seamstress, homemaker, serious church-goer, and steward of the family income, all qualities Glenys learned to value. After receiving her diploma from Lenox Hill Hospital School of Nursing, Glenys enlisted in the U.S. Army Nursing Corps. She worked in evacuation hospitals in Normandy and St. Lo weeks after the invasions, in July, 1944. She received a Purple Heart when her hospital in Belgium was bombed. While on leave in Paris, Glenys went out with an Army captain in the Engineer Corps. He had whistled at her on the boulevards. With victory declared in Europe, Glenys volunteered for the Philippines and left on a Liberty Ship headed for Manila. By the time she arrived, the war was over, and she waited for the soldiers to return home before being able to ship out and be relieved of active duty. Taking only enough time to tell her parents and buy china and linens, Glenys moved to Albuquerque to marry Clifford Jurgensen, the soldier who had whistled at her. She immediately fell in love with this new land, so foreign from the beaches and oceans of her past. While Clifford traveled throughout the state as a civil engineer, Glenys happily moved from one small town to another. She was a little worried when her brother visited Jemez Springs in the 1940s, thinking he would report back to her parents that she was living in wilderness poverty. Clifford and Glenys had five children: Karen (Watkins), Kathi (Marchiondo), Ray, Richard and Glenn. Glenys was an indulgent mother, raising the children largely by herself as Clifford traveled to build New Mexico's roads. She instilled in her young family the values and pleasures that she found dear: love of reading and intellectual curiosity, wonder at nature, enjoyment in living, responsibility for helping others, and love of family. Later in life, she delighted in her grandchildren, Lisa, Anna, Amy, and Cliff. After her husband's death, Glenys found new interests and pastimes. She learned to be a skilled watercolorist and enjoyed water aerobics, a return to the swimming she loved as a child. She turned alkaline New Mexico yards into lush gardens. She traveled throughout the state with Senior Center friends. She expanded her collection and knowledge of jazz music. She kept family holiday traditions and never forgot a birthday or anniversary. Glenys was brave, hard-working, resilient, loving and happy. May the Lord lift up his countenance upon her and give her peace and joy eternal. A celebration service will be held at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Albuquerque on Saturday, March 29th at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.

LOVATO, PHILLIP RANDOLPH In remembrance forever in our hearts, Phillip Randolph Lovato, son, brother, father, nephew, cousin, uncle and friend, was born on 11/23/59, born again on 3/5/13. Four days to glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ. We miss you little brother, your laugh, your crazy way about you. I can't believe it's been one year already. We can't forget the details, the follow up. I'll never forget the Friday you called me and shared that great day. When the walls were closing in and that cool sister asked you if you needed prayer and you said yes. A simple prayer of faith. A sinner's prayer. What a confirmation for me, for all of us. I wish I knew who that sister or maybe an angel was. I know Father knows. But I thank her for standing up and taking care of business with boldness and courage which we all need to do. I thank you Father in a prayer of thanksgiving for all the prayers and all the beautiful people who were there for us when we needed them. Thank you Skip and Ken for everything. We love you guys and I know what that word means. On behalf of my family and Mama, Paulie, James, Dolores, and Lisa, may the Father always bless you and your families and keep His hands on you. Her center-stage view of the Sandias was a place she called home almost 60 years. Doris was raised in Boston where she studied ballet for 18 years and honed her shopping skills in Feline's basement. Her older sister, Virginia, introduced her to Albuquerque, where her penmanship won her a drafting job. She soon embraced the Southwest and Richard A. Powers whom she married in 1958. The two embarked on an adventurous life as downhill skiers, home builders, Elks Lodge socialites, Branding Iron BBQ restauranteurs, ACLOA, and MTS enthusiasts. Her gregarious and optimistic outlook made her fast and lifelong friends of the many lives she touched. Always at her best when there was someone in need, she was ready with an empathetic ear and a large homemade cookie. Ever efficient and energetic, Doris was happiest with friends or finding bargains at the mall. She is survived by her grateful children Lisa M. Powers (Gary Stidham), Donald R. Powers, Susan M. Barna (Basil A. Barna), and Pamela J. Powers-Moesser (Lane Moesser); her sister Virginia McGiboney; grandchildren Cees, Willow, Danielle, Ryan and Nick; and her great-granddaughters Arya and Mia. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard A. Powers and her brother Edward S. Jay of Boston. The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice and Lovelace Drs. Standoli, Federici, Henao, and Sandoval for their exceptional kindness and holistic care. A memorial celebration will be held Saturday, March 15, 2014, 11:00 a.m. at Musical Theatre of Southwest, 6320 Domingo Rd. NE, Suite B. THURLO, AIMEE SALCEDO On the morning of February 28, 2014 Aimee passed away peacefully at home after a brief struggle with cancer and related complications. She was attended by her husband of 43 years, David. Aimee was 62 years old. Aimee, the youngest of two daughters born to Armando and Silvia Salcedo, was born on June 1st, 1951 in Havana, Cuba. At the age of seven, Aimee and her older sister Silvia fled the Castro regime with their parents and settled in Miami, Florida. Her mother died soon thereafter. After her father, an electrical engineer, remarried, Aimee became a boarder and student at Ursuline Academy in Arcadia, Missouri. Her quarters were just down the hall from a curtain that separated the young women from a cloistered area. This was an environment that would prove valuable to her future career as a published author. Aimee graduated from high school in 1969 after transferring to Ursuline Academy in New Orleans. She entered LSU New Orleans as a freshman, but, hampered by life-threatening asthma, was forced to seek a less stressful environment. She transferred to the University of Albuquerque (now St. Pius X High School) in 1970. After a few months, she moved in with a roommate near the University of New Mexico campus and her friend introduced her to David Thurlo, their next door neighbor. It was love at first sight, and after only a month, Aimee and David were married. Aimee left college and worked as a bookkeeper at a hardware store, then Clover Club Foods, while David completed his degree. Never one to back down on a challenge, Aimee got the Clover Club job on a bluff and taught herself to use an adding machine by practicing on a drawing of the key configuration. When David graduated Aimee obtained her American citizenship and decided she wanted a career of her own. After unsuccessful attempts working as a receptionist at an employment agency then an optometrist's assistant, Aimee was inspired to write. She sat down with legal pad and pencil and began writing a romantic intrigue novel. She soon discovered David, now a teacher at APS, looking over her shoulder. With her permission he jumped in and began editing her work. After the book was completed, Aimee sent out a proposal, which was quickly rejected. Again it was Aimee's refusal to admit defeat that led to her success. 60 rejections later an offer came from a New York editor and the first book was sold. With David's editorial support, Aimee worked up two new books proposals, and with a track record now, they found a new publisher. The next book that Aimee wrote and David edited made a national bestseller list. From that moment on, the two partners were never without a book contract. Led by Aimee, who usually wrote the first draft of each new project, the couple discovered that they could write with one voice, and their combined efforts resulted in books characterized by the unique stamp that defined their partnership in life and work. Aimee was the lead author writing the first two drafts on all those novels where her name appears alone or first on the cover. These are the vast majority of the duo's works over the next thirty years. In addition to many romantic suspense novels, including 36 for Harlequin, the Thurlos have written three successful mystery series, each featuring a very different primary investigator. In the Sister Agatha series, the `cozy' mysteries are solved by an extern nun - which reflect back to Aimee's years as a student and boarder at Ursuline Academy. The Lee Nez series, which David wrote and Aimee edited, featured a partnership between a New Mexico state policeman who happens to be half-vampire, and a Hispanic woman FBI agent. Their flagship series of 17 hardcover Ella Clah police procedurals, ending with a November, 2013 title, Ghost Medicine, was set on the Navajo Reservation where David grew up. Ella Clah is a Special Investigator for the Navajo Police Department. With these novels, the Thurlos were more equal partners, relying on their complimentary strengths. The Ella Clah series was optioned by CBS Productions, but, alas, Ella Clah did not make it to network television. Aimee and her husband's books have been read by millions of readers, and their novels have been translated and sold worldwide in more than 18 countries. Their work has been widely praised by reviewers and critics and have received starred reviews in Publishers Weekly and Booklist. Among Aimee's many accolades are the Romantic Times Career Achievement Award, a Willa Cather Award for Contemporary Fiction, and the New Mexico Book Award for Mystery and Suspense. She and her husband have also made Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Borders national bestseller lists. Their Lee Nez half-vampire series was optioned by a Hollywood production company as a feature film prospect. Just a few months prior to her death, Aimee and her partner completed the final volume in their Harlequin Intrigue Copper Canyon series, Eagle's Last Stand. and began revising Looking into Darkness. This is the second hardcover romantic suspense novel in their new trading post series destined for publication in 2015. Aimee's dedication and drive were so strong, even when confined to bed, that she and David worked on laptops side by side for over a month until she had to put it aside, rest, and allow her husband to take notes to finish the revisions. Mrs. Thurlo's works will live on, however. Four books already completed will be published in the next two years, including the above, plus Undercover Warrior and the second story in the Charlie Henry series, ironically named Grave Consequences, which David wrote and Aimee edited. Aimee's life was not all work. She was an enthusiastic animal lover and, over the years she kept a bull snake, mice, many domestic rats (including two rescues) and two horses, one of them a BLM mustang. Aimee took dressage and hunter jumper training from a Corrales trainer and rode for many years along the ditch banks, bosque, and her own arena. Though she suffered from asthma, she found and raised two American Staffordshire Terriers, Clouseau and Chloe, an injured puppy at the shelter about to be put down. Chloe watched over Aimee for thirteen years. Aimee also found a German shepherd-cross puppy living under a tumbleweed near the FAA radar facility, and despite her wheezing, kept the animal. Marcy lived ten more years and was the most loyal dog anyone could imagine. At one time Aimee owned five dogs, mostly poodles adopted from the Roswell Humane Society, her favorite charity. Just a week prior to her death, her latest rescue, a large standard poodle named Gabriel from South Carolina, succumbed to stomach cancer. Aimee and her office companion were inseparable. The dog was by her side until the day before he died. Her two remaining poodles, Marlowe and Ella, now keep David company. Aimee was driven by her need to prove her worth and make her contribution to society, but she was very outgoing in public and made easy connections with those she met. She will be missed not only by those who knew her, but by the millions who fell in love with the characters in her books. Aimee Salcedo Thurlo was preceded in death by her mother Silvia Berndes Salcedo, father Armando Salcedo, and sister Silvia Salcedo Rodriguez. Aimee is survived by her beloved husband, David. A private remembrance will be held for close friends and family. For her many friends and readers, condolences and personal comments may be made on Facebook or through the website at www.aimeeanddavidthurlo.com

WICKA, SYLVIA ANN If you're about to toss that umpteenth charity solicitation with the rest of the junk mail you just picked up, stop for just a second & think of Sylvia Ann Wicka. Known to all who knew and loved her as Sissy, she entered eternal life on Friday, March 7, 2014, at the age of 60. She lives on in this world in the hearts and memories of her son, his wife, their baby boy, four brothers, her mother, nieces and nephews she doted over, and a large number of other relatives, friends, and students whose lives she touched so profoundly. Sissy had the biggest, most generous heart and she always shared whatever she had. If you forgot your lunch, half of hers was yours. If you needed a ride or a coat or a shoulder or a hug, she was there for you. She always had at least $20 to spare for the endangered animals or the hungry kids or the scientists searching for cures. She loved books and animals (she was particularly fond of St. Francis of Assisi) and politics and traveling. She especially loved Germany, where she spent part of her childhood in a military family and where she returned to serve her country in the U.S. Army. It's where she met her late husband and where she took her boy for a summer when he was young. It's where he will scatter her ashes. And daisies, oh, how she loved daisies. Sissy gave of herself, her time, her talents, her treasure. She gave everything she had to anybody in need. If somebody needed tutoring or help buying a book at National American University, where she worked, she was there for them. She started a drive to collect books for elementary schools in her beloved Albuquerque. She was her 91-year-old mother's caretaker for several decades, taking her to doctor's appointments and the grocery store and out to dinner. She sent goodie packages to her nieces in Wisconsin and Colorado and always talked about "my girls." She was known as a mom to so many, but she had just one child herself, Garry, the light of her life, to whom she imparted all of life's lessons, like being kind to animals, which she taught him by taking him as a toddler to feed the ducks at the ponds at UNM. Be good to others. Share whatever it is you have. Because somebody else needs it more. Do what you have to do. Stand up and be heard. If there's injustice, fight it. If there's a problem, seek a solution. If you have to get on a city bus bright and early every morning and go across town to get your kid to a better school, do it. If you have to teach math yourself in grade school because of budget cuts in the school district, you volunteer to do that, too. If you find a stray, pregnant dog wandering the neighborhood, you take her in and when she has her litter, you get her puppies their shots and take care of them, too, until finally you find them all good homes. And if your 8-year-old goddaughter is having a tough time and you can't be there to comfort her in person, you order her a subscription to a kid's magazine so she can feel better. Always thinking of others. Giving of herself. Everything she had. Sissy leaves us with other lessons that allows her spirit to endure in so many ways. Plan for tomorrow but live for today. Bask in the sunshine but enjoy the rain. Take pictures. And show them off. It's OK to be proud of your kid. That light shone doubly bright a little more than a year ago when Garry and his wife Jen had a baby boy they named Greyson. That little boy brought so many smiles and so much joy to her life, which was only fair seeing as how she brought so much love and laughter into all of ours. Sissy is also survived by her mother, Angelina Stapleton, her brothers John (wife Eileen, children Paul, Collin); Jack (wife Diane, children Billy, Kristin); Drew (wife Donna, children Katie, Karen); and Arnie (wife Kate, children Jordyn, Miquela, Ashlyn); and numerous in-laws and other relatives and good friends including Billy Martinez and Donna Russell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Army Spec. Garry Robert Wicka Sr., her father, Air Force Staff Sgt. Hubert Stapleton, and her grandmother, Emeteria Melendrez. A memorial celebration will be March 11, 2014 at 4:00 pm at French-Lomas Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87112.
