ANDERSON, SANDRA L. age 76, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 30, 2013. She was born June 26, 1937, in Minneapolis, MN. Sandy is survived by her son, David Anderson and his partner, Karen Wood; daughter, Darla Cannon; former daughter-in-law and close friend, Norma Anderson; sister, Sharon Imes and her partner, Dick, of Fernwood, ID; and three grandchildren, Daniel Cannon, Ashley Anderson, and Sean Anderson. She was preceded in death by her mother Gladys McAleese and father Gordon Johnson. Sandy moved to Albuquerque in 1969 with her mother and two children. Soon after arriving in Albuquerque, she started working at Sandia National Laboratories to support her small family, and she remained at Sandia until her retirement in 1997. She began making ceramics at the Palo Duro Senior Center, and her hobby quickly evolved into a passion as she decorated her house with many of her proudest works. Sandy was a private person who never needed much to be happy. She enjoyed desserts, playing solitaire, watching The Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune and reading the Sue Grafton Mysteries. Sandy will be remembered most of all as a devoted mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, and friend; as a tender and loving soul who yearned for the bonds of family; and as a proud and courageous woman who always took care of business. A memorial service will be held for Sandy at Unity Spiritual Center (9800 Candelaria NE ABQ, NM 87112) on Saturday, October 12, at 2:00 p.m.

BYROAD, CARLEENE E. "CARLY" Age 66, passed away at Lovelace hospital on Monday, October 7, 2013. She was born the oldest of four children in Pasadena, CA on April 10, 1947, to Salvatore and Mary Louise Barone. Carly was a government employee for over 30 years retiring from the U. S. Forrest Service in 2011. She was a very outgoing person who was loved by many. Carly loved animals and gardening. She is survived by son, Leon Byroad Jr.; two sisters, Paula Fernandez, Patricia Rapisand and brother, Christopher Barone. CHAVEZ, JOE FRANK age 74, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on October 8, 2013. Joe is survived by his sisters, Demecia Sanchez and husband, Leo, and Equilda Chavez and husband, Fred; and several nieces, nephews, cousin, friends, and coworkers. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Magdaleno and Andrea Chavez; brother, Edisteo (Eddie) Chavez; grandparents, Mateo and Equilda Chavez, and Rafael and Demecia Padilla. He was a member of the Catholic Church, Veteran of the NM Air National Guard, and retired from the US Postal Service in 1977. FERREL, NANCY ASHCRAFT born on November 17, 1954 in Albuquerque, went home on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, after a two year struggle with ovarian cancer. Nancy is survived by her husband, Richard who loved her without condition; cherished daughter and son-in-law, Bethany and Scott; beloved son and daughter-in-law, Travis and Ashlee; precious and loved granddaughter, Evelyn (daughter of Travis and Ashlee); her honored and loved parents, Ernest and Dorothy Ashcraft; brothers, Bill and John and their families; aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins; Richard's family, friends she held dear to her heart, and co-workers. Nancy was a 1972 graduate of Manzano High School and a 1977 graduate of NMSU. She wished to thank her family, friends, co-workers, church family, and the many unknown people who prayed for her and supported her during her illness. She is grateful for the care of the staff and Dr. Carolyn Muller at UNM Cancer Center for their tireless work. KING, DAVID SOLOMON, PHD Age 77, was born January 25, 1936, to C. William and Martha (Fisher) King. He died peacefully at his home on Sunday, August 25, 2013, following years of declining health. He moved from Los Alamos, NM to Philomath, OR, with his wife, Mary Marsh-King in 2003. David King graduated from Smithville High School in 1954 and received his bachelor's degree in physics from Manchester College and a doctorate in astrophysics from the University of Indiana in 1965. He taught physics and astronomy at the University of New Mexico from 1965-93. During his tenure at the University, he was a visiting professor and consultant at Los Alamos National Laboratory, until his retirement in 1999. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James; and a daughter, Lynda. Surviving are his wife; son, Jonathan King (Kate) of Rio Rancho, N.M.; and daughter, Mary Anna Gahafer (Andrew) of Edgewood, N.M. He was grandfather to eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Richard King (Nancy) of Wooster, OH; sister, Barbara Cawthra (Rick) of Monroe Falls, OH; and his ex-wife, Marilyn Garrison of Albuquerque, NM. David's passion for the universe was evident not only in his work and teaching but also in his love, travel, nature, and photography. A service in his memory will be held at the University of New Mexico Alumni Chapel at 2:00 pm on October 18th.

KURTZ, ALFRED C. a resident of Albuquerque, NM, aged 93, passed away September 30, 2013. He was born February 4, 1920 in Alton, Kansas. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Masako Kurtz; daughter Jackie Keyohara and her husband Strail; son John Kurtz and his wife Doreen; son Jerry Kurtz and his wife Vickie; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; brother Robert Kurtz and his wife Joyce; and a sister Rosalie Kurtz. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters, and a grandson. He retired as a Master Sergeant from the U. S. Air Force in 1968 having served 30 years. He will be interred with military honors in the Santa Fe National Cemetery on Friday, October 11th, at 12:45 p.m.

LAKE, ROBERT WILLIAM III Age 40, a loving husband and father passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2013 after a long fought battle against lymphoma. He was a graduate of Eastern New Mexico University with a major in criminal justice. He was a dedicated employee of the State of New Mexico Children Youth and Family Department serving as a juvenile probation officer for twelve years. Rob and his wife Lori were high school sweethearts and were married for twelve years. They had a happy home with their sons Logan (7) and Conner (2) in Albuquerque, NM. In his younger years, Rob enjoyed boxing and was a former super-heavy weight Golden Gloves State Champion. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing poker, and watching MMA fights. Rob was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Lori; sons, Logan and Conner; mother, Jeannie Burleson; stepfather, Daryl Burleson; father-in-law and mother-in-law, David and Virginia House; sisters and brothers-in-law, Karen and Ken Thomas, Joan Castillo and nephew Raymond Castillo; grandparents, Max and Esther Peralta and Virgil House; his aunts and uncles, Gerald and Jackie Maese, Curtis Sanchez and Max Torres, Lee Trimble, Blanche and James Jones, Patricia and Michael Doyle, Tim and Raina Trimble, Camille and Steve Sherwood; many cousins and relatives in New Mexico, Louisiana, Texas and North Carolina. MARTINEZ, MICHAEL PEDRO Age 53, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died on Monday, September 30, 2013. Michael was an avid Dallas Cowboy and Isotopes fan with a passion for the Albuquerque lowrider culture and community. Michael had a wonderful sense of humor, a generous nature and a compassionate heart. He will be deeply missed. Michael is survived by his wife, Nissa Martinez; four siblings, Cynthia Martinez Davis and husband Earl, Andrew Martinez and wife Brenda, Rodger Martinez, Paul Martinez and wife Rita; five children, Michelle Martinez, Mikie Martinez, Melanie Montoya, Anthony Martinez and Mariah Martinez; five grandchildren, Danny, Damian, Nelia, Envy and Elias. MILLIGAN, DARLENE M. Age 66, a resident of Albuquerque, died on Monday, October 7, 2013. She is survived by her husband, Lewis C. Bartel of Albuquerque; daughter, Chandelle M. Bullington of Mill Creek, WA; son, Raymond Bullington and wife, Tanya of Las Cruces; grandchildren, Mitchell, Gabrielle, Natasha, Rebecca and Makayla. She is also survived by her brother, Darwin Milligan and many other family and friends. Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Marvis Milligan; her son, Eric Bullington and daughter, Sara Bullington. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church while in Texas. She worked in her earlier years for TRW and after receiving her Masters Degree in Counseling, she worked with patients with disabilities. OPPERMAN, RAYMOND H. Age 90, a resident of Albuquerque since age 14, died Sunday, October 6, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Frances; children, Dale Opperman, Denise King and husband, Paul Arsenault and daughter-in-law, Angela Opperman; grandchildren, Susan Opperman, Mark Opperman, and Jesse King of Albuquerque and the surrounding area; sister-in-law, Judy Newsom of Farmington, NM and children, Dixie Newsom, Bonnie Newsom and Sherrie LaVella; nieces and nephews, Pat Mutchie and children, Jim and Vanessa; Gale Opperman, Donna Opperman, Billie June Opperman, Larry Opperman, Paul Opperman, Shirley Judy, Kathy Bison, Debbie Walker, and Bob Nowlin and Bruce Nowlin. Mr. Opperman serviced his country in the Army/Air Corp, following High School graduation at Albuquerque High, in the South Pacific through the end of World War II. He then attended the University of New Mexico where he earned a Bachelors Degree in Science and Masters Degree in Science (Nuclear Physics). He worked for Sandia National Laboratories for 28 years, retiring at age 58. Services will be held Monday, October 14, 2013, 10:00 a.m. at FRENCH - University. SEGURA, MANUEL "GENO" Age 55, born in Albuquerque on June 30, 1958 passed away on October 8, 2013. He was preceded in death by his mother, Connie Segura.
