BACA, DOROTEO G. (JOTY) 1928-2013. Age 84, a resident of Tome, NM, passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2013. He was a proud member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and in his earlier days participated in their fund raisers, and proudly served along with Virginia as Mayordomos. He was instrumental in getting the cemetery land donated to the church. Joty also participated in the installation of the crosses on top of Tome Hill. He was also active with the Tome Fire Department. He participated in many events to raise money for the Boys Ranches of New Mexico. He proudly rode with the Sheriff's Posse. Joty was one of the founders of Cibola County Campout where he and Virginia brought tremendous joy to many children of the area. Joty served in Korea as a Staff Sergeant in the Army as a Surveyor. This resulted in a lifetime of sadness and confusion as he carried the painful and un-healing wounds of a soldier. He worked as a postal carrier and manager for Ramah Lake Venture. He and his dear friend Griego ran riding stables in the East Mountains. He was recognized worldwide for 60 years of work preserving America's Original Colonial Spanish Horse. The breed, now in danger of extinction. He was awarded lifetime achievement by the Horse of America's Registry and recognized by American Indian Horse Registry. His dream was to raise awareness to the plight of the horse that built this country. He travelled across the country and to numerous fairs and events in the state talking about the importance of preserving this historical treasure. He will be missed by so many who loved him dearly. Joty is survived by his wife of 62 years, Virginia Baca; nine children, Dorothy Koenig and, Ted, Richard Baca and wife, Carolyn, Anthony Baca and wife, Patsy, Paulina Saunders, Mark Baca, Annette Gonzales and John, Diane Eggler and husband, Pete, Gregorio Baca, Roxanne Thomas and husband, Lar. He adored all his numerous precious grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A viewing will be held at Romero Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, September 8, at 5:00 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 6:00 p.m. A final visitation will be held at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Monday, September 9, at 9:30 a.m. with a Funeral Mass to be held celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Tome Catholic Cemetery. CARRIAGA, ADRIAN RAY Age 21, beloved and devoted son, brother and grandson, was embraced by the Lord and taken to eternal rest, Sunday, September 1, 2013. He was a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, NM. Adrian was a 2010 graduate of West Mesa High School. He enjoyed long boarding, bowling, going to concerts, and truly was an avid outdoorsman. Adrian will be fondly remembered by his beautiful smile, heart of gold and the love he had for his little sister, family and friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Jack and Dorothy Simmons. Adrian is survived by his loving parents, Eric Levi and Sheryl Carriaga; his precious sister, Ashley Carriaga; his paternal grandparents, Levi and Dorothy Carriaga; aunts and uncles, Clay and Michele Onnen, Jack Simmons, Jr., Marc and Gidget Barresi, Christine Carriaga and Velma Carriaga; cousins Kayla and Destiny Onnen, Sean Simmons, Mia and Gavin Barresi, Renee, Eliza, and Mariah Montoya. CHAPMAN, KATHLEEN (KAY) Age 90, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away Monday, September 2, 2013. Kay lived by the Shakespearean quote "To thine own self be true, and it must follow as night follows day. Thou can'st not then be false to any man." She is survived by her sisters Mary McHugh, Madge Benson, Gertrude Scully, Pat Power and Joan Broderick, all of Canada; her children Michael R. Chapman and his wife Sheri, Norma Jacques and her husband Mike, Robert P. Chapman and his wife Kim, and Connie L. Lee and her husband Mark. She also is survived by her grandchildren, Christian T. Chapman, Robert P. Chapman, Jr., Amy Helvie, Thomas M. Chapman, Michael R. Lovelace, Ryan C. Chapman, John Adam Chapman; and great-grandchildren Analiza, Mikka, Rylan and Cashton. Kay was preceded in death by her husband Thomas R. Chapman and brother Ron Smith. GARCIA, REGINALD J. (REGGIE) September 24, 1928 - August 31, 2013 Reggie graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1946 where he was an outstanding athlete. He attended college at Loyola University in New Orleans, playing on the basketball and tennis teams. In 2002, he was inducted into the Loyola Sports Hall of Fame. After graduation, Reggie served in the Army during the Korean War. Reggie then graduated from UNM Law School in 1958 and went on to a successful legal practice with the firm of Simms and Garcia for over 40 years. He was elected as a legislator to the NM House of Representatives and served from 1959-62, later becoming an effective lobbyist for several decades. Reggie also served as the chair of the Metropolitan Flood Control Board and was president of the Tennis Club of Albuquerque. His keen intellect and engaging personality were evident to everyone who knew him. Reggie is survived by his six children, Kirk Garcia, Timothy Garcia (Nancy), Kevin Garcia (Lisa), Brigitte Garcia Herman (Daniel), Galen Garcia (Laura) and Reginald Marshall Garcia; his eight grandchildren, Ranell Cox, Robert, Paul and Rachel Herman, Ted, Amy, Julia and Alex Garcia; and six great-grandchildren. Services will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 619 Copper Avenue NW, Albuquerque. GREENSLADE, JAMES O. Age 88, of Albuquerque and a 25 year resident of Grants, NM passed away on July 22, 2013. Jim was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 24, 1924. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1943 and served for three years in the South Pacific during World War II. He graduated from Michigan Tech University in 1951 with degrees in Mining Engineering. Jim worked at Hecla Mining in Wallace, Idaho and Moab, Utah until 1957 when he relocated to Grants where he worked for Phillips Petroleum, Sabre Pinion, United Nuclear Corporation and Phillips Uranium. Jim's loving wife of 54 years, Alba Greenslade, preceded him in death. He is survived by his two daughters, Gale Moore, (Larry) of Denver and Gwynneth Colvin, (Don) of Hobbs, four grandsons and five great-grandchildren. Jim was an active member of the Society of Mining Engineers. A celebration of Jim's life will be held Saturday, September 7, 2013, from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Wyoming. HEDRICK, ARTHUR HOWELL Another cowboy has entered heaven with the passing of Arthur H. Hedrick on 9/4/13. Art was valiant to the end, fighting pancreatic cancer with everything he had. He will be sorely missed by his four children, Kim Hedrick (Ron Lenig), Michael Hedrick (Ginny), Michelle Hedrick (Wayne Smith) and Arthur T. Hedrick (Roberta). Art was married to Mary Lou Hedrick for 31 years and called her his best friend even after their divorce some 20 years back. Art was also fortunate to help raise another daughter, Brittany (Joshua) Hess, with close friends, Dee Hess-Scaltrito and Terry Perkins. Art is survived by grandchildren, Austin (Jenny) Hedrick, Ian, Shayna and Jenna Hedrick; Mackenzie and Spenser Smith; great-grandchildren, Wesley Hedrick and Ariela Walby. Art was born in Espanola, NM and was preceded in death by his parents Arthur Clark Hedrick and Sofrona Ward-Hedrick; brothers Alvin Hedrick and Robert Hedrick; sister Ollie Sloan; cousins Jimmy and Johnny Hedrick. Art is survived by his sisters Barbara (Jimmy) Allison, Sugar (Jerry) Morris and cousin, Tom (Loretta) Hedrick. It was Art's request that no service be held. ROGERS, LORRAINE BERTHA ARCHIBEQUE 54 years old, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque died Saturday, August 31, 2013. THOMA, PHILIP "MIKE" Age 56, resident of Peralta, NM, passed away suddenly September 3, 2013. Mike was born February 24, 1957. Mike is survived by his wife, Cindy of 33 years; his daughter, Micah, and husband, Stephen Bogue, their twin daughters, Bailey and Cierra and son, Kolton; and his son, Joshua, and wife, Tinisha Thoma, their son, Brailyn and daughter, Mcaidyn; father-in-law, Dale Whitlow; Vicki and Miguel Ojeda, John and Linda Thoma, Gina Thoma, Gigi and Dennis Zacharias; six nephews, three nieces and two great nephews; and many others who loved him. Mike owned his own business, MJ Glass, for over 20 years. Mike officiated for the New Mexico Activities Association, USSSA, ASA and PGF for 30 years. WARTELL, BETTY CLAIRE DAVIS (MRS. RICHARD H.) Age 95, passed away peacefully following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's on September 4, 2013, in Fort Wayne, IN. Betty was born 19 July 1918, in NYC, the daughter of Harry Ira & Daisy Wolfe Davis. She & Richard were married in Belem, Brazil on 30 Nov, 1943, while both worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers. They moved to Albuquerque NM in 1944, following Richard's career, where she lived until moving to IN. She is survived by her two sons and their families: Michael and Ruth Beachy Wartell of Fort Wayne, IN, their two children, Justin (Sarah Gudorf) Wartell and Richard Wartell; and Andrew & Patricia Thomas Wartell of Vienna VA, and his two children, Samuel (Julie Harper) Wartell and Elizabeth (David) Weddel. Seven great-grandchildren also survive "Grams" - Degan Bartles (Wartell) and Sophia Daisy Wartell; Amelia and Harper Wartell; and Jackson, Preston, and Hannah Weddel. Betty was predeceased by her husband Richard H. Wartell on September 9, 1984, her parents, her brother M.J. Davis, and two cousins, Mrs Jehnet (Robert) Modern and Mrs.Esther (Burt) Schnitzler - all of Albuquerque NM. Surviving second cousins include Michael Modern, Wendy Modern Gallagher, David Schnitzler, and Robbie Schnitzler. Betty was a lifelong member of Temple Albert in Albuquerque NM. Betty will be remembered for her devotion to the care of her husband Richard who suffered from MS for many years, her wild smile, her love of family and travel, and her interest in living life to the fullest. Her listening ear and acceptance of everyone is a love lesson that will carry on in her family for years to come. In keeping with her wishes that funerals should be celebrations, the family will be receiving friends at the home of Michael and Ruthie Wartell, 8107 Tranquilla Place, on Saturday, September 7, 2013, from 2:00pm through the evening.
