IVEY, ROBERT DEWITT Born October 8, 1923, in Plant City, FL, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died peacefully on June 23, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Vivian Porter Ivey; daughters Susan Ivey and husband Dean Reynolds, Vivian Jones and husband Greg; step-daughters Valerie Harvey and husband Bill, Jeri Muller and husband Roger, and Laura Mascarenas; fourteen grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Bettye Spearman Ivey. Ivey received his Bachelor's degree in biology and English and his Master's degree in mammalogy from the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. He married Bettye in 1945, and in 1947 the couple settled in Albuquerque, NM, where they started their family. There Ivey began a teaching career that would span over 40 years. He taught biology at UNM and Albuquerque High before settling at Sandia High. His early interests were primarily in mammalogy. He was published twice in The Journal of Mammalogy (Nov 1957 and Nov 1959), one of which was a study on the mammals of Bernalillo County the result of ten years of research and the trapping of 6000 animals. In later years, his focus transitioned to botany, specifically the native plants of NM. In the early 80s, as a single man again, Ivey found and married his soul mate, Vivian Porter Ivey, who shared his interest in botany. Together, they explored every corner of New Mexico, researching and collecting plants and going on field trips with the Native Plant Society of NM and other nature groups. Over the years, Ivey documented and sketched detailed illustrations of more than 1800 plants. In 1983, he published the first edition of The Flowering Plants of New Mexico, and during the next 25 years, 4 more editions were published. In 2003, he was recognized by Former Governor Bill Richardson for his decades of contributions to the natural history of the state. He also authored and illustrated (all or in part) 16 other botany books, most notably the Flora Neomexicana III (2012). Ivey's passion for teaching never diminished, and even 20 years after retirement, he continued to give presentations and talks for groups like the Native Plant Society of NM. He was often recognized and greeted by his former students, which number in the many hundreds. It was in the beauty of nature that Ivey felt God's presence the most. He found God's work evidenced more in the walls of the Grand Canyon and in the minute details of the flowers he illustrated than in any other way. Ivey will be remembered for his sense of adventure, his artistic talent, his desire to learn and teach, his love of nature, and for inspiring so many young minds through nature, science and art. A memorial service will be held at Sandia Baptist Church (9429 Constitution Ave NE) on Saturday, July 13, at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Native Plant Society of NM, PO Box 35388, Albuquerque, NM 87176-5388.

KING, ELIZABETH a native New Mexican, born Nov 10, 1942 passed away Sunday June 30, 2013 after a two year battle with lung cancer. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, Donaciano Lovato Sr. and Fabiola Francis Lovato and her brother, Jose (Joe) Alfredo Lovato. She is survived by her three brothers, Don Lovato Jr., Peter Lovato, and Joseph Anthony Lovato; and four daughters, Theresa Blea, Mary Flores, Tammy Sherfy and La Vonda King. Lisa, as she was known, loved the outdoors, loved her family and was extraordinarily generous. As the primary caregiver for both her parents, she made the last few years of their lives, safe, happy and dignified. Fortunately for all of us, she also had time to support others, including sixteen grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren - her life revolved around her family! And when she did find time for herself, she definitely made up for it - you could say she was a highly caffeinated social butterfly with extra large wings. Always ready to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger or help someone in need, she was a steady voice with a steady hand and a beautiful smile. She will be greatly missed! A Rosary will be recited on Friday, July 12 at 9:30 a.m. with a Memorial Mass to follow at 10:00 a.m. at the Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Albuquerque. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to any charitable cancer research organization of your choice.

KLINE, WILLIAM J. William J. Kline, also known as Bill by his friends and Geed by his son's friends, was born September 24, 1922 in Hillsdale, Michigan to Rhea (Bly) Kline and Ora Kline. Bill, the youngest of four, joined his brother Dick and sisters Ruth Ross and Martha Chase in the hereafter on June 30, 2013. Dad is survived by his loving children: Sandy Bera (Steve) of Michigan, Carol Kline (Ric) of Albuquerque, Lou Kline (Angie) of Michigan, Lee Kline (Carrie) of Virginia and Kevin Kline of Michigan; as well as 11 grandchildren; 7 1/2 great-grandchildren; six nieces and nephews; four granddogs and many friends. With great genes in his family, he lived to the ripe age of 90, with a birthday celebration he was able to spend with many family and friends. Dad, a Veteran of the Coast Guard during World War II, was a man with a great sense of humor (never forgot a joke!) and of hidden talents most people didn't know about! He enjoyed writing limericks-usually on the humorous side, adding wonderful little drawings to the limerick. What a great publication of his limericks and drawings we could have had! Dad retired from Warren Fastener, a division of Black and Decker in Michigan, before moving to Albuquerque from Michigan in 1994, where he joined daughter Carol in the Land of Enchantment! Soon, he became a Volunteer at the Natural History Museum and became very involved in Civitan, an international community service organization. He joined the Rio Grande Civitan Club, then later, the Route 66 Civitan Club. He was Civitan of the Year in Rio Grande and received the prestigious Club Honor Key, as well. Dad was, also, a Member of the President's Council, in support of the Civitan International Research Center. He always looked forward to Civitan functions and traveling to Civitan District meetings, where he would see his many friends. Dad was a kind, generous man and one of the best natured people we've ever known, never saying a bad word about anyone. (Well, there is one great story!!) We hope we inherited his sense of humor and his memory. We have a void in our hearts; but remembering his quick sense of humor puts a smile on our faces. If you wish to make donations in his name, you may send them to UAB Civitan International Research Center, CIRC 329, 1530 3rd Ave. South, Birmingham, AL 35294. SIMMONS, CAROL LOUISE Carol Louise Simmons of Albuquerque, NM, died peacefully June 29, 2013, surrounded by members of her family. She was born August 25, 1937 in Brooklyn, NY, daughter of John Olson, late of Kyrkult, Sweden, and Ester Bertelin, late of the land Islands in the Baltic Sea. Although her given name was Louise Carolina, she preferred the name Carol. She grew up in Brooklyn, was a member of the Junior Fellowship League of the Salem Lutheran Church, and graduated from Bay Ridge High School in 1955. Unable to pursue the higher education in art she desired, Carol graduated from the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in 1956. After several positions with various businesses around northern New England, she became executive secretary of the Lake Placid Club in New York. There she met her first husband, William Moyer Richardson. They were married April 4, 1959 and had two daughters, Laura Louise and Bonnie Lynne. They lived in Northern Virginia where she became an accomplished watercolorist and founding member of the Potomac Valley Watercolorists, now with a membership of several hundred artists. After 11 years in Northern Virginia, Mr. Richardson died suddenly in 1976, and in the same year she lost both her parents. Later she met and married a widower, John Ashley Simmons of Fairfax Station, VA on May 13, 1978. With his five children, Mary Frances, Katharine Wells, Elizabeth Ashley, Jeanne Carolyn and John Landrey, they became a combined family with seven children. Together, they saw their children through high school, colleges and six weddings. At the same time, Carol, together with her partner, the late Fay Owens of Annandale, VA, started The Watercolor Room in Occoquan, VA, selling paintings and antiques, which Carol collected during numerous trips. After losing their lease, The Watercolor Room was disbanded, and Carol and John retired to Albuquerque in 1994. There, they enjoyed visits from their children's families and grandchildren, and travels to Europe and the U.S. Southwest. Carol is survived by her husband, John, and all seven of their children and their families, including 13 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Presbyterian Ear Institute, Albuquerque, NM (as Carol became totally deaf in 1990). A memorial to celebrate her life will be held August 25, 2013 at a location to be determined.
