MAFIT, SUE A. 1921-2013 age 92, a resident of Los Lunas formerly of Albuq., passed away peacefully in her home on February 15, 2013. She was born in 1921 in Happy Texas, to Roy A. and Janie C. Rogers. She spent her childhood in Canyon, Texas, where her father was a home builder until the depression. To find work, her family moved west to New Mexico. In 1936 Sue enrolled in AHS where she made life long friends. She graduated in 1939. Sue worked for Sears during WWII where she earned enough money to buy a new car that she claimed remained new for four years, due to the war effort. Sue loved people and she never met a stranger. No matter where she went or how old she was, Sue made friends everywhere. While attending UNM she met and married Jack Mafit. They both worked at Sandia National Labs until the birth of their only child, Thiel Suzanne. Sue was a wonderful loving mother, fantastic cook and accomplished seamstress. Sue loved her friends, pets and above all her family. Her hobbies included fishing, drawing, painting, crafting, games of all kinds and collecting old things. Sue grew to love New Mexico and all it has to offer. She invited everyone around her to enjoy life through her eyes. The clouds, the mountains, a new flower on a spring day, a bird singing in the tree, our New Mexico sunsets; Sue loved life, never taking one minute for granted. For many years Sue was active in the PTA and Coronado Club. Sue owned and operated Sunset Grocery in Albuq's. south valley for 17 years. She loved all the people she came to know in her store. Sue would close every Wed. at l:00pm to have lunch with the Lovely Ladies, a group of neighborhood widows. This continued for over 25 years. Sue also kept in contact with the "girls from AHS class of 1939", meeting for lunch several times a year, until they were all in their late 80's. Sue was a devoted daughter. She cared for her mother Janie until 1995 when Janie died. Sue then moved to Los Lunas to live with Thiel and her family where she became active with the LL Senior Center and made many new friends. A character among us, she was spirited, funny, generous, caring, happy and loving. Sue will be dearly missed. Sue was preceded in death by her husband Jack; her parents Roy and Janie Rogers; and her only sibling Roy Rogers, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Thiel and son-in-law, Anthony Baca and their sons Jacob Baca and Matthew Baca, all of Los Lunas. A private service was held at Sunset Memorial Mausoleum in Albuq. To honor Sue please send any memories you would like to share to her family home or e-mail to atjmbaca@msn.com

RIGGS, SHERALYN Our friend, Sheralyn Riggs, better known as Sherri, passed out of this life on January 11, 2013. She fought a fierce battle against cancer, enjoying life much longer than her doctor's would have imagined. She remained upbeat and made her decisions based on her beliefs and desires. Sherri loved photography, nature and creating something from nothing. She described herself as an artist rather than a scientist and indeed she was. Her many careers spanned from marine biologist, small business owner, professional photographer, landscape designer, and metal sculptor. Her most recent was a blacksmith, where she used "found art" recycling material to produce "future heirlooms". She was a member of SWABA, providing a role model for women in the blacksmithing world. Sherri was featured in the book "Passion and Power, Iron Artists in the Western US." Sheri was generous, freely teaching others and sharing her artistic visions. She was appreciated for her incredibly bright outlook on life, humor, insight and love. She was honest, caring and kept us on our toes, holding us to a higher standard. It was her wish, to have her friends remember her with a joyous, life-celebrating gathering at her home this spring, (date to be determined). Her free spirit should not be contained in just one place. We are confident that everywhere her essence comes back to earth will always be a place of peace, harmony and beauty. Her friends knew her as an independent and powerful woman. We will all miss her and be lessened by her absence. Our love and her memory will never fade.

ROOT, MARY ALICE (SIMS) an influential New Mexico naturalist, dies at 89 (April 26, 1923 to January 31, 2013) surrounded by family in Edina, Minnesota. A world traveler and passionate bird watcher from the age of five, Mary visited over 60 countries to observe birds. She was born and raised in Indianapolis and graduated in 1946 from Butler University with a degree in Physics and Math. In 1947, she married L. Jay Root of Indianapolis, shortly before they moved to Albuquerque. She reluctantly left her beloved New Mexico in 2009, to move to Minnesota for treatment of lymphoma and to be near her son's family. Mary was active in the Pi Beta Phi sorority and in the Panhellenic Council. She started her career in 1950's as a teaching assistant in physics at the University of New Mexico, and retired from UNM in 1988 as an administrator in the Biology Department. At UNM she often battled stereotypes against women, gaining many allies and lifelong friends who admired her grit and determination. While working, she took numerous classes in Spanish, anthropology and biology including ornithology. In 1970's, she was instrumental in starting the Albuquerque chapter of Audubon Society and was President of the New Mexico Ornithological Society (NMOS). She gave talks and led birding trips during the annual Festival of the Cranes at Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge annually from 1989 to 2008. She was keenly interested in fossil birds, lectured often on bird evolution and wrote several articles (e.g. Root, M. A. 1997. The Creaceous-Teriary fossil birds in New Mexico. New Mexico's Fossil Record I: New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science Bulletin. Vol 11). She was highly instrumental in obtaining the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (NMMNHS) exhibit of the giant Eocene bird Diatryma (Diatrymas gastronis), first described from fossils found in 1874, in the San Juan Basin near Cuba, NM. She tracked down the fossil bones at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, raised the $10,000 it took to have scientifically precise replicas made of all the bones, which were sent to NMMNHS and assembled. The exhibit of this 6.5 feet tall bird has been displayed since 2001. After she retired, she tirelessly entered bird observation data into the NMOS Bird Siting Database, and was given the NMOS Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. In her forties, she began running, winning many races in her age group well into her 60's. She also joined a Jacki Sorensen's aerobic dance class in her forties and exercised with the same class into her eighties. Weekly for over 30 years, she and a friend walked the path around the North UNM Golf Course. A public celebration of Mary's life will be Saturday, May 4, 2013, at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science in Albuquerque at 6:30 pm. Please bring photos of Mary to exhibit the celebration. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Mary Alice Root Fund for the Museum's Junior Docent Program, NMMNHS Foundation, P. O. Box 25446, Albuquerque, NM 87125. Mary is survived by her daughter Dana, son-in-law Kris Hansen, their children Kyla and Ross, and Ross' wife Justine (Curry); her daughter Terry; her son Bryan, daughter-in-law Valerie (Leach), their children Sam, Brandon, and Justin, Sam's wife Mindy (Sell) and their children (Mary's great-grandchildren) Noah, Becca Joy, Alton, and Catherine; and her brother Daniel Sims, his wife Carol and their children Gregory and Scott, and Gregory's wife Kimberly and Scott's wife Eileen. Preceding Mary in death were her ex-husband L. Jay Root, brother Lawrence Sims, sisters Margaret Sims and Irene (Sims) Hardman, and Terry's husband Stephen H. Schneider.
