BACHECHI, THELMA nee Lommori, passed away peacefully January 14, 2013 at age 96. Thelma spent most of her long life in Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Bachechi; and her parents, Augustin and Filomena Lommori. She is survived by her sister, Norma Shirley; niece, Dena Doyle; and many friends. For many years, Thelma shared a home with her sister, Norma. They were as close as any sisters could ever be, two "peas in a pod." Around the kitchen table, they entertained friends with wonderful recollections of growing up in Albuquerque. Thelma had a prodigious memory and Norma would ask her to elaborate on all the stories, often with humor and laughter. Thelma was a kind and trusting soul with warmth and charm. She would want to cook a special meal, often Italian, for anyone she met and liked. She was related to many of the prominent Italian families who settled in Albuquerque generations ago, for the most part coming from Tuscany and the town of Lucca, or nearby. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service is planned at a later date. Should they wish, friends of Thelma may contribute to the Animal Humane Society, 9132 Montgomery Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87111 or a charity of their choice. DEFILLIPPO, PATRICK (PATTY) born in Brooklyn, New York, on August, 11th, 1942 passed away peacefully on January, 12th, 2013 with his family surrounding him after a long, valiant fight to survive pancreatic cancer. He was welcomed into eternal life by his parents, Samuel and Evelyn DeFillippo and brother James DeFillippo, all preceded in death. Throughout his life he worked as a young man on the high rises of Manhattan, New York. Upon relocating to New Mexico he owned a Butcher shop, and a Florist, both located in Rio Rancho. Patty was a loving brother, and is survived by his siblings, Samuel DeFillippo Jr., Nancy Shanks, Linda Davide, and Rose Ferdinand. Brother and sister in-laws include, Jackie DeFillippo, Arthur Shanks, Richard Ferdinand, Michael Falsone, and Camille DeFillippo. He shared a very close relationship with each of them and he will missed more than words can describe. The great loves of his life included ex-wives JoAnne, Mary, and Stephanie. His children included, Kim, Barbara, Patty Ann, Kristin, Patty, Kim, and grandchildren. Even though distance separated them they were always loved greatly and he was so proud of the people they became. He was a doting uncle to many nieces and nephews and his dearest of friends were the same as family to him. He was a man who enjoyed the simple joys of life, being with his large family he cherished, and two dogs. He loved a party and no party was complete without him. His famous black hat was always passed around as we all tried to emulate the swagger he had when he danced. His presence would light up a room. Every celebration our family has going forward will never be the same without him. On occasion, he loved to try his luck at the casino hoping to "win big" and take care of his family, near and far. His family was his heart and soul, always speaking of the good times, the regrets, and hopes for the future with those he held dear. It was the most important thing to him. He lived for today, enjoying each moment, and appreciating all the blessings he had. The family would like to extend a sincere "Thank You" to all who came to be with Patty during his battle. Your kindness and love was apparent to all. It was always Patty's way to ask all about the "goings on" of the visitor's life, to make someone laugh, and to make sure everyone else was comfortable, even in the depths of his fight. He was a very selfless, and strong man. His spirit was lifted with every visit he had. You all have our heartfelt gratitude. Patty DeFillippo was a man who taught his family and friends to love life, and was loved by so many. He lived with hope and courage until the moment he left us. As a family we thank him for all the good times, and showing us that life is to be enjoyed. He will be forever missed and never forgotten. No services are scheduled at this time. Patty was a loyal animal lover. In Lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to your local ASPCA or Humane Society.

JOHNSON, JOHN NOBLE Age 97, passed away at his home in Plano, TX on Saturday, December 15, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. We celebrate the wonderful and long life of our father who gave all of us a life filled with love, laughter and fun. Noble was born in Duluth, Minnesota, the son of Swedish immigrants. He was a World War II veteran who graduated from the University of Minnesota. It was in Duluth that he met and married our beautiful mother, Thea Jane Brown. In 1951, they left their home in Duluth and moved to Albuquerque, NM where he began a career with Sandia National Laboratories. After he was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1972, and given less than six months to live, he decided to fulfill his dream of owning his own real estate company, Noble Johnson Realty. He loved his second career and was very successful due to his passion for the business, his many business contacts, and hard work. Noble loved and enjoyed his family, his work, his multiple projects around the house, and "the land" in Tome, NM and Ouray, Colorado, his two favorite places outside of Albuquerque. He was a devoted husband and father who told us every day, until he could no longer speak, how much he loved us. He and mom were married for 67 years at the time of her death, and together were a shining example of what true love can be. Death parted them and now death reunites them. Noble is survived by his devoted children Tom Johnson; Rob Johnson and partner Walter Cole; Kristin (Johnson) Hanger, husband Howard and their son Ryan; and Karin Johnson. The family sends a special "Thank You" to Noble's two care-givers Mary Morales and Debby Ackley who cared for him for over six years as the effects of a stroke and dementia took their toll on his health. We will forever be grateful for their loving care and being so much a part of our family. ORTIZ, RAY "SONNY" A life long resident of Martineztown, Sonny passed away on Jan. 4 at his home with family and friends at his side. Sonny is survived by his daughters Timmi, Kathy; son Ray Jr.; brothers Danny Ortiz, Cecilio Ortiz, Tony Baca of Seattle; several nieces, nephews, close cousins, many relatives and dear lifelong friends. Sonny always went out of his way to help anyone out. A plumber by trade, he often plied his trade based on a floating scale of whatever one in need could afford. For many, that rate was a warm meal and pat on the back. As a young man, Sonny was truely a gifted athelte who enoyed everything footbal and boxing. He enjoyed attending boxing and musical offerings at the old Civic Auditorium. Ray Charles and Fats Domino were some of his favorites. But Sonny, at an early age, elected to put family first and concentrated on providing for them and encouraging his siblings and family to be better but never forget your family or where you came from. Sonny's family would like to express our heart felt gratitude to all the extended family and his friends who comforted him in his last days. The time, energy, extremely generous contributions of many kinds and your prayers will forever be remembered. Thank You.

PRUSS, ALYCE MARY, SISTER June 15, 1916 - January 15, 2013 Felician Franciscan Sister Alyce Mary Pruss passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2013, at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Convent in Rio Rancho, NM. The daughter of Stanislaus and Eustasia Maciejewska Pruss, Alice Eva was born in Manville, WY, on June 15, 1916. In her very early years, the family moved to Loup City, NE, to be near her mother's family. When she was school age, in order to attend Catholic School, Alice lived with her grandparents in Ashton during the week and spent weekends with her family in Loup City. Her father's death when she was seven created challenges for a young mother and three small children but the blessings outweighed the hardships. The kindness and joy of the Felician Sisters in Ashton sowed the seed of a vocation in young Alice and in 1930, she began her High School studies at Mother of Good Counsel in Chicago, IL. In 1934 she entered the religious Congregation of the Felician Sisters on Peterson Avenue in Chicago, where at her Investiture she was given the name Mary Lucillia. In 1936 she began her long career in education at St. Adalbert School in St. Paul, MN, teaching Grades 3 and 4 as well as Music. In the following years, Sister taught in 15 schools in Missouri, Illinois, Alabama, California, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Texas. In addition to teaching a grade or two, Sister served as principal at St. Mary's in Tulsa, OK, from 1954-1960 and again from 1961-1965; at St. Philip Neri School in Midwest City, OK from 1968-1974; at St. Andrew School in Tecumseh, NE from 1977-1983; at St. Justin Martyr School, Anaheim, CA from 1983-1986; at Holy Trinity School in Los Angeles, CA from 1989-1991 and as vice-principal at Queen of Heaven in Albuquerque, NM from 1991-1992. To support her 55 years in education Sister earned both her Bachelors and her Masters in Education from St. Mary College in Xavier, KS. An accomplished musician, Sister taught and encouraged Music wherever she ministeredand somewhere along the line Sister Lucillia went back to her Baptismal name - now spelled Alyce. From 1992-1996, she served as the Administrator of St. Clare Center at the provincial house of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Rio Rancho, NM. During the next several years Sister was involved in numerous internal ministries, assisting others wherever she could. With failing eyesight Sister Alyce devoted her life to the Prayer Ministry, beginning in 2005. Sister spent much time in the chapel on behalf of the needs of the world, with her Lord, Jesus from whom she drew wisdom and strength. She corresponded with old friends and made new friends, both young and old. Sister Alyce was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Gregory Pruss and her sister Dolores Millar. ROMERO, CAYETANA (TANNA) From the arms of her husband and children, to the lap of her Lord, Tanna Romero passed away on January 19, 2013. She left this world in the same manner in which she lived her life - with dignity, strength, and grace. Tanna was born on March 7, 1936 in Algodones, NM to Jose Manuel and Felipita Garcia. She was born in a small house - part of a humble compound that included aunts, uncles, and many cousins - that had no running water or bathroom and dirt floors. She grew up in the north valley where she attended St. Mary's, later St. Therese, and Valley High School where she would become the school's first football queen. Upon her graduation from high school, her father told her that he could not afford to send her to college. Her mother insisted she "find a way." And she did. She earned a scholarship to the University of New Mexico. From her parents she learned the meanings of love, patience, devotion, tenderness, humility & humor. In 1958, she met her soul mate, Ed Romero. He quickly fell in love with her and told her, "When you fall in love with me, we will get married." Although she would later joke that her proposal was not the most romantic one, she did in fact fall in love with him and married him on October 15, 1958. And thus began their 54 year adventure. While her husband worked and traveled, Tanna raised four children. And as they grew, she began pursuing her own business interests. She started two companies, the Romero Employment Agency and the Romero Credit Collection Agency. Eventually, in 1977, Ed and she started Solar America, Inc. which evolved into Advanced Sciences, Inc. an international company specializing in environmental engineering with offices in eight states, Mexico, and Argentina. Tanna would say that Ed "ran the big picture" while she managed the human resources department of their company. He would say that yes, he did, but only after getting her approval. After they sold their company, they embarked on perhaps their most exciting adventure. She joined her husband in Spain when President Bill Clinton appointed him as U.S. Ambassador to Spain and the first U.S. Ambassador to Andorra. As America's first lady in Spain, she represented her country with great pride and dedication. When people walked through the embassy doors, they were walking into "her home." She declined the State Department's offer to furnish the embassy with loaned art from national galleries. Instead, she brought her favorite pieces from her and Ed's personal New Mexico collection and from other New Mexico museums, bringing a cultural exchange from New Mexico to Spain. She was so proud of her home state. Both in her native New Mexico and her beloved host country of Spain, Tanna served on many boards and volunteered for various organizations including the NM Museum Board of Regents; the National Hispanic Cultural Center; the National Hispanic Arts Endowment Advisory Board; the National Museum of Women's Art in Washington, D.C.; the NM Foster Grandparent Program; Las Amigas de Nuevo Mexico; NM Catholic Foundation; NM Steering Committee; Distinguished Public Services Awards Council; Employment Opportunities for Women and Minorities, Washington, D.C.; U.S. Department of State National Foreign Policy Conference; Cruz Roja, Spain; Mozarabes Penitente Auxiliary, Spain; Santo Sepulcro, Spain; and the American Women's Club, Spain. In 2009, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the NM Commission on the Status of Women, which gave her great pride. In 1997, Tanna fell gravely ill and was not expected to survive. By the grace of God, the love of her family and friends, and an unbelievably talented and dedicated medical team, she survived and focused her remaining years on "making memories." She and Ed traveled the world, she was able to witness the birth of more grandchildren, continued her involvement in Democratic politics, and cheered on her grandchildren from the stands of St. Pius High School and Annunciation Catholic School. She spent her time with the people in her life that made her happy. In her own words, Tanna loved her husband more than anything in the world and above all other persons or things. He was always her best friend. Tanna loved her children above all others, defended them first, never waivered, and loved them unconditionally. She corrected them by telling them the truth, hoping they learned to face their own failings through their mistakes and praying they found their own solutions. She taught her children by example and did her best to make them proud of their mother. She taught them to stay true to their Catholic faith and be defenders of their church. Tanna achieved what she was sent to do by successfully being the finest example of a mother and grandmother. She made her children and grandchildren intensely proud of her. She is survived by her beloved husband, Ed Romero; her four devoted children, Christina Romero, Edward Steven Romero and wife Maria Jose (Pepa); Ruth Romero Sneddon and husband Stephen; and Anna Romero Harrod and husband Peter; her twelve grandchildren: Edward Adam Romero, Andrea Lopez-Guerra, Camila Lopez-Guerra, Jose Nicolas Lopez-Guerra, Sarah Terese Sneddon, Elizabeth Anne Sneddon, Alexandra Cayetana Salazar, Gabriela Rose Harrod, Cristina Corrine Salazar, Samantha Faith Harrod, Edward Cayetano Romero Oliver, and Maria del Carmen Romero Oliver; her brothers Roberto Garcia and wife Jane, and Phillip Garcia and wife Anita and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Jose Manuel and Felipita Garcia, her father and mother-in-law Isaac and Ramona Romero, and her son-in-law Jose Lopez-Guerra. To quote one of her closest friends, "Not bad for a little girl from Algodones." Pallbearers are Peter E. Harrod, Stephen M. Sneddon, Adam Romero, Nicolas Lopez-Guerra, Johnathan Murphy, Greg Young, Turner Branch, and Jim Griffin. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 12500 Carmel Avenue NE, Albuquerque, NM on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. with Bishop Arturo Tafoya officiating. SMITH, ROGER HOLLIS age 76, of Albuquerque, passed away on Friday, January 11, 2013, after a long battle with lung cancer. A longtime homebuilder and developer, he was the older of two brothers born to Walter and Lucille Smith. After graduation from Highland High School where he was a standout basketball player, he attended UNM's ROTC program and played briefly for the Lobos, remaining an enthusiastic fan and season ticket holder to this day. While in the US Marine Corps, he gained the rank of First Lieutenant before deciding to leave and pursue a business of his own. Married to the love of his life, Marjorie, the young couple settled in Albuquerque with a daughter and new twins. His father and uncle were contractors, and seeing opportunity for himself, he soon obtained his contractor's license. Remodeling houses was too easy and he began taking on larger commercial projects, jobs that he would visit each week in his small airplane. At one point, he reluctantly sold his plane, required to quit flying as a loan condition for the next deal he was working on. In 1975, friend Ben Abbruzzo talked him into building some houses on land at the base of the Sandias in Albuquerque, and a long history of homebuilding began. With a vacation home in the British Virgin Islands for years, Roger was able to impart his love for the water to his family and friends, orchestrating many holiday gatherings. In later years, he realized his dream of becoming a yacht owner, and was happiest cruising on his boat, The Rio Grande Belle, with Marjorie. Roger came to know the Lord and was baptized along with his parents at a young age. His faith was strong and an inspiration to his family, his many bible study friends, and his Hoffmantown Church family. He is survived by his wife Marjorie W. Smith; brother Steven Kelly Smith; son Roger H. Smith, Jr. of Albuquerque, NM; daughter Leslie L. Lucas and husband Reggie of Montclair, NJ; daughter Rachel L. Simpson and husband Brett of Vancouver, BC, Canada; and three grandchildren: Devon Harte and husband Brett of Jupiter, FL, Aaron Simpson of North Canton, OH, and Julian Lucas, currently attending Harvard. He will be missed by many other family and friends that loved him. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 20, 2013 from 5:00 -7:00 pm at FRENCH - Wyoming. Services will be held at Hoffmantown Church on Monday, January 21, 2013 at 11;00 am. Memorial donations can be made to Navigator Ministry - The Navigators, PO Box 6000, Colorado Springs, CO 80934.

He was 84. He is survived by his wife Doris of Corrales, New Mexico, and his daughter Undine Wagner of Richterswil, Switzerland. Born in Jueterbog, Germany, on July 5, 1928, Dr. Wagner was educated in his hometown until the last years of World War II. After the war, he studied theology in Hamburg, Germany, and Zurich, Switzerland, obtaining his doctorate from the University of Zurich in 1960. From 1958 to 1993, Dr. Wagner taught New Testament at the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Rueschlikon, Switzerland, where he also served as Acting President in 1972 and 1982 and President ad interim in 1987. Between 1964 and 1984, he was Visiting Professor at seminaries in Eastern Europe, the U.S. and Africa. In 1976-1977 he was a Visiting Scholar at the Harvard Divinity School. Following his retirement from the Rueschlikon seminary in 1994, he and his wife moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he taught as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Philosophy (Religious Studies Program) of the University of New Mexico from 1995-2007. From the beginning of his professional career, Dr. Wagner was active in ecumenical and denominational circles. Between 1956 to 1958, he represented the German Free Churches at the Ecumenical Centre of the Council of Churches of the Federal Republic of Germany, where he served as assistant to the well-known German anti-Nazi theologian, Martin Niemoeller. He also received the Award of Appreciation for outstanding and dedicated service to the students of the University of New Mexico Religious Studies Program (May 2007). Dr. Wagner had a great zest for life and celebrated each day, often with a glass of wine and his famous Rouladen (German meat rolls). He thrived on good conversation and lively debates. He will be remembered for his magnanimous spirit, his fierce and wide-ranging intelligence, his command of languages, his courtly politeness, his subtle sense of humor, his selflessness and humility, and his intellectual and moral integrity. In the end, his greatest legacy is his students, scattered across the globe. We will miss our dear Guenter terribly. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him. WHIDDON, RONALD ALTON Age 77, a resident of Albuquerque since 1987, died on Sunday, December 23, 2012, after a long, difficult, and brave battle with cancer. He was born in 1935 in Barnesville, Georgia, to Roy Elton Whiddon and Martha Newton Whiddon. Ron married Gloria White and joined the U.S. Coast Guard. They adopted two boys, Jason Franklin Whiddon and Matthew Wayne Whiddon. Ron had two tours as a communications-electronics (C-E) technician with the Coast Guard on the Japanese island of Hokkaido, and a tour at the LORAN station in Lewes, Delaware. Philco Ford hired Ron to work in Trinidad, West Indies, where he and his family lived for seven years. While there, Ron got his small aircraft pilot's license and learned to play the guitar. Ron then was hired by the U.S. Department of State Foreign Service and spent several years living and working in the Middle East, taking care of C-E needs at embassies and consulates in thirty-five countries, including Turkey, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Jordan, Israel, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Malaysia. While living in Jakarta, Indonesia, he set up communications for Secretaries of State Schultz and Kissinger on their trips to the Middle East. While living in Karachi, Pakistan, he helped set up a new communications system at the officers barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, following the bombing in 1983. Ron and his family were evacuated for several months during the riots in the early 1980s under Zia-ul Haq's dictatorship. Ron was curious about other countries and their cultures and took full advantage of his many travels. He kept a log of all of his trips, and by the time he finished flying to different countries, he had accumulated almost half a million air miles. He and his family enjoyed a trip back to the States on the Queen Elizabeth II, which he enjoyed. On his return to the States, Ron entered a classified program that required him to travel extensively within the country's borders. His marriage ended, and he moved to Albuquerque in early 1987 to continue work with the Department of State. Ron married Carol Price Caulking. They enjoyed traveling around the Southwest by slip-in, fifth-wheel, motorhome, and travel trailer. They hiked; crewed a hot-air balloon; went country and western dancing; and enjoyed C&W, Bluegrass, and classical music concerts, and had season tickets to the NMSO for many years. Ron also did leatherwork, researched the genealogy of the Whiddon family, and became quite knowledgeable about the computer. Ron retired from the State Department in 1989 and went to work for Jaycor, from which he retired after ten years. He stayed on as a contractor for two more years and worked with FEMA during natural disasters. He set up the communications unit in the Roundhouse in Santa Fe during the Cerro Grande Fire, as well as comms units during the heavy flooding in Houston and the massive ice storm that devastated parts of Arkansas in 2001. After his final retirement, Ron and Carol enjoyed more RVing, a paddlewheeler cruise on the Columbia River, and lots of hiking. One of Ron's favorite things to do was to meet a group of former co-workers for lunch every Wednesday, which he did for many years until shortly before his death. In addition, he was a volunteer at the New Mexico Telephone Museum, where he helped keep old equipment displays in working order. In 2003 doctors found that Ron had cancer. He had three surgeries, including a Whipple procedure in Los Angeles, chemo, numerous infections, hospital stays, and rehab, but through it all, he remained upbeat. Following his release from the nursing home where he had intensive rehab, he had nearly seven years in which he led a very active life, taking a cruise to Alaska with friends, then RVing to Alaska with his traveling buddies, Neville Herbert and Clyde Washburn. The "three musketeers" went to Africa for a photo safari in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, and Tanzania, and later to New Zealand. There were also numerous trips throughout the West and to Louisiana. Ron's cancer returned in early 2011, and he fought valiantly for almost two years, going through every type of chemo suitable for his type of cancer. Despite his illness and his extreme fatigue and weakness, Ron wanted to travel as much as possible, so he and Carol made five more trips in 2012 in their travel trailer with their two kitties, Cody and Sheba. The last trip was five weeks to Georgia and Tennessee to visit family and friends. They returned home on October 19, and the following week Ron joined a Stage I Clinical Trial at UNMH Cancer Center for a new chemo, but it was too late. The cancer had spread to Ron's brain, and his health deteriorated rapidly. His body finally gave out on December 23 in Kaseman Presbyterian Hospice. The family is very grateful to everyone in hospice for the gentle and attentive care they provided. Ron donated his body to the UNMH Medical School and will be interred at the Santa Fe National Cemetery once his ashes are returned. Ron's life was a blessing to his family and friends, and he was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was a truly good man: caring, loving, thoughtful, compassionate, generous, always willing to help anyone who needed it (even when he didn't feel good), hardworking, friendly, energetic, lots of fun, full of adventure (demonstrated by his first jump out of an airplane when he was 74), and blessed with a wonderfully dry sense of humor. Ron never hesitated to help a stranger. For several years he volunteered with the Albuquerque Senior Affairs Office, where he visited regularly with a gentleman who had Alzheimer's, and helped a woman who was blind do her grocery shopping and go to doctor's appointments. He also did minor repairs around her house and continued to visit her often after she went into hospice. Ron was preceded in death by his parents and his son Jason. He is survived by his wife, Carol Whiddon; his son, Matthew Wayne Whiddon; his granddaughter, Mercedes Briana Whiddon; and many cousins scattered around the country. The family is grateful to the many doctors who made it possible for Ron to have almost seven more years, even though few thought he would make it that long. His two oncologists were Bernard Agbemadzo at Lovelace and Dr. Richard C. Lauer at UNMH Cancer Center. At Lovelace, Dr. John Deflice found the initial cancer, and Dr. Dale Strawn operated on Ron twice. If desired, donations can be made in his name to the Roadrunner Food Bank, 5840 Office Blvd., N.E., Albuquerque, NM 87109; to Animal Humane of New Mexico, 615 Virginia St., S.E., Albuquerque, NM 87108; or to Best Friends Animal Society, 5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab, Utah 84741 (www.bestfriends.org).
