BLACK, CECIL RHETT January 12, 1944 -November 7, 2012 Cecil R. Black died on November 7, 2012 at the age of 68. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Kathy; his three sons, Christopher, Richard (and wife Michelle), and Michael Black; brothers and their wives, Chuck and Helen Gray, and Greg and Sharlene Black; his brother Richard's wife, Ale Gray; his mother, Jane Gray; mother-in-law, Mary (Mom) Bunker; sisters-brothers-in-law, Jane Bunker and Mason Morfit, Emily and Tim Joyce, and John Bunker and Cammy Watts; as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Black; his stepfather, Bill Gray; his brother Richard Gray; and the grandparents who raised him, Vain and Clara Snyder. Cecil grew up in the little town of Luna, New Mexico, and swore he had the best childhood ever. While his mother attended college in Silver City, he roamed the hills of Catron County, not always making it home before dark. An avid fisherman and hunter, he always said he was born too late. He would have loved to have lived during the settling of the Wild West. He read every Louis L'Amour book three or four times, and spent the last months of his life comforted by the shows on the Western Channel. Cecil graduated from Cobre High School in Bayard, New Mexico, and served in the US Navy from 1962 to 1968, completing two tours in Vietnam. He spent 15 years as a telephone man for Ma Bell in California, where he met Kathy. His second career was as a heavy equipment operator for industrial construction in Texas and New Mexico, and he had yet a third career as a trim carpenter for residential housing projects in Albuquerque. On retirement, he continued to use his carpentry skills by designing and building a house for his wife on their retirement property near Pie Town. He said it was his proudest achievement. Special thanks go to his hospice nurse, Amie, who bonded with him and helped him navigate the world of comfort care, and to his dear friends, Roxanne, Eric, and Jeremy, who provided respite care and watched over him as he courageously accepted the progression of terminal cancer. When the phone rings now, we will all miss hearing, "Hey Outlaw!" A Celebration of his life will be held at the Community Center in Luna, New Mexico, Saturday, November 17, 2012, at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Catron County Food Bank.

CHANIN, MILDRED MAXINE PERELMAN was born on September 23, 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio and passed away surrounded by family on October 16, 2012 in Albuquerque. Mildred and her husband, Abe, who had resided for approximately seven decades in Tucson, Arizona, relocated to Albuquerque almost ten years ago to be closer to their daughter Beth and son-in-law, Dr. Lance Rudolph. Mildred moved to Tucson with her father, Abe Perelman, while she was still in high school and there she met her future husband, Abe Chanin. She graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Speech and briefly taught at the Cerebral Palsy Clinic. She married Abe after he returned from World War II and completed his BA in Journalism at the University of Arizona. Mildred not only taught Hebrew after-school, tutored students in Hebrew studies, developed Jewish early childhood programs, but also assisted her husband in organizing and operating The Arizona Post, Tucson's newspaper for the Jewish community, and Collegiate Baseball, a national publication. In later years, she was his helpmate in writing and editing multiple publications on both sports and southwest Jewish history. Mildred also traveled and lectured on Jewish history with Abe in their later years. And through all that time she was active in Hadassah and other Jewish causes. Somehow she managed all these roles as well as being a mother and chauffer to Beth. She also found the time to take many other young people under her wing, providing advice and many types of support. She is survived by her husband Abraham S. Chanin; daughter Beth Rudolph and son-in-law Dr. Lance Rudolph; grandson Sean Rudolph and wife Anna Jancewicz and son Jona Jancewicz; and nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, friends, and wonderful caretakers and medical personnel who helped her through the last difficult years. Special thanks to Mary Wezelman and Patricia Ramczyk who provided daily support in very unique ways. Burial has taken place at Santa Fe National Cemetery. The family asks that anyone wishing to make a contribution in honor of Mildred donate online to www.jfsnm.org <http://www.jfsnm.org> or mail to Jewish Family Service, 5200 Wyoming NE, Suite 200, ABQ, NM 87109. Mike is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Kathy; his son, Christopher Frost and spouse Holly; and three daughters Michelle Frost, Rebecca Frost and Kristen Frost; grandchildren, Destiney Flores, Ryan Frost, Alyssia Rios, Antonio Rios, Andrea Rios, T Jay Winsor, and Camryn Casey; brother Greg Frost Sr. and spouse Devon; and nephew Greg Frost, Jr. Mike was born in Pasadena, California on March 6, 1950 to James Homer and Mary Viola (Rael) Frost. He was a "miracle baby" and the subject of medical histories of the day, as the youngest, at 3 months of age, to ever survive brain surgery for Hydro Cephalia. Mike grew up in El Monte, California, attended Epiphany Elementary School and graduated, in 1968, from El Monte High School. He was a star football player and heavyweight wrestler. He briefly attended Pasadena City College before being drafted into the U.S. Army. Mike served as a Crypto Operator in Vietnam and was honorably discharged. Following his service Mike returned to his job at Ole's Building Supply Company as a Department Manager. Here he met the former Kathy Gonzales and after a brief courtship was married. Mike drove for UPS for several years until his "football" knees failed him. Mike joined his brother Greg and best friend Bill Parreco in New Mexico in 1979. He apprenticed in the residential construction industry and soon earned his GB98. He was a Project Manager for Aries Construction and Pressley Homes in the 80's before founding his own company, Arcadia Homes. He worked side by side with his brother Greg Sr., son Christopher and nephew, Greg Jr. helping the company survive the mortgage meltdown and thrive through statewide and national expansion. During this time, Mike also continued to provide construction remodel and rehab assistance to his past clients, as they continued to call and would settle for no one else. As Mike matured he developed a sweetness about him that was very affecting. He was a generous man, who gave of himself and his talents whenever possible. He was quick to offer his assistance when he sensed a need. For 20+ years Mike donned his Santa Claus suit, donated his time, and made Christmas merrier for thousands of local children. Mike will be remembered by his family, friends, acquaintances and local children as a sweet, gentle, and caring man. VANCE, JOE LYLE was born August 30, 1919 to Edgar (Joe) Wilson and Edith May Howard Vance in Pawnee City, Nebraska, where he grew up and worked on the family farm and dairy. Joe Lyle enlisted for one year of service in the Nebraska National Guard on December 19, 1940. On December 23, 1940 the Guard was mobilized into federal service; and on December 7, 1941, the one year was extended to five years of federal service. Joe was assigned to Company I of the 134th infantry of the 35th Infantry Division. While Joe was on leave in Washington D.C. before being deployed, he met Edna Earl Guest. She was from Deport, Texas and was working in Washington D.C. for the FBI and later for the British Embassy. They corresponded for the next few years while Joe served overseas. Joe served in the European theater during World War II and was at Land's End, England on June 6, 1944. He could hear the sound of fighting taking place on Omaha Beach, and he would say the soldiers had no idea what was happening across the Channel until they landed on Omaha Beach on July 5, 1944. The men who survived the landing on Omaha Beach quickly found themselves in the middle of the battle at St. Lo just south of the landing beach. Following the liberation of St Lo, they were led "in a hurry" across France by General Patton. Joe was in Nancy, Metz France, Luxemburg, Holland and then in the Battle of the Bulge. The Division then went on to Germany as far as the Elbe River where they waited for the Russians to take Berlin. Joe always said, "I was honored to serve my country." Joe was awarded the Bronze Star and five battle stars for his wartime service. After being discharged from the Army on October 5, 1945, he and Edna Earl Guest married in Maryland on October 12, 1945. They had three daughters and a son. The family moved from Lincoln, Nebraska to Albuquerque in 1956, where Joe began work for American Car and Foundry (ACF). Edna died from complications of cancer in 1960. He married Winnifred K. Herrick November 16, 1962, at Central Methodist Church. Joe retired from the General Electric Aircraft Engine Group in Albuquerque in 1981. Joe was a member of Central United Methodist church where he served on committees, and bowled with the church's bowling team for several years. After their retirement, Joe and Winnie enjoyed fifteen years of motor homing in their RVs. They traveled all over the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand. He and Winnie also delivered for Meals on Wheels for a number of years. Joe died from cancer in Rio Rancho, New Mexico on October 7, 2012 at the age of 93. In addition to those mentioned, he was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Howard; his sister, Mildred Gartner; his son, Kenneth; his son-in-law, Wes Wambold; and in 2011 his wife of 48 years, Winnie. He is survived by daughters, Linda Herrick Wambold of Arvada, Colorado, Betty Jo Nye and her husband, Kyle, Carol Jean Glover, all of Albuquerque and Patty Vance Lueck and her husband, Stan, of Farmington, New Mexico; eight grandchildren, Valerie Nye and her husband, Joel Yelich, of Santa Fe; Troy Russell and his wife, Michele, Julie Hatfield and husband, Pat, Todd Russell and wife, Karin, all of Arvada, Colorado, Trent Russell and his wife, Margarita, of Littleton, Colorado, Cari Apodaca, Brenda Thrasher and her husband, Stephen, and Laura Wick all of Albuquerque; twelve great-grandchildren, Rudy and Kenneth Apodaca, Ashley Hatfield, Tyler Russell, Stephanie and Nicole Russell, Morgan, Brooke and Levi Russell, Emerson Nye Thrasher, Alexandria and Brianna Wick; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express special appreciation to all of the staff at Sandia Springs and Vista Care Hospice for their loving care and support. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, November 17, 2012, 2:00 p.m., at Central United Methodist Church, at 201 University NE. If desired, in lieu of flowers, it is suggested that a memorial gift to Central United Methodist Church for the Permanent Endowment for Operations Fund or the Pawnee City Public Library Foundation, P.O. Box 311, Pawnee City, NE 68420 might be made. Cremains are interred at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Please visit our online guest book for Joe at www.FrenchFunerals.com.
