He was preceded in death by his parents, Andres and Rosita Baca; brothers, Presente (P.A.), Esquipula (Skip) and wife Christina, Maximiliano (Max), Epimenio (Epy) and wife Ethel, Jose and wife Mary Jane, Benjamin (Ben); and sister Barbara Herrera. He is survived by his sister Rose Armijo; brother-in-law Alex Herrera; sisters-in-law Louise Baca and Marie Baca; plus many nieces and nephews who loved him very much. Andrew graduated from El Rito Normal School and worked in the insurance business all his life. He loved politics and sports and was an avid Lobo fan. BACA, ELIAZIM Age 87, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Socorro, NM on April 21, 1925 to Hermelindo and Magdalena (Valenzuela) Baca. Eliazim grew up in Socorro and graduated in 1946 as Valedictorian of his class. He was an office manager for a law firm in Socorro for 41 years and retired in 1987. He enjoyed hunting and playing golf. He was a past president of the Socorro Consolidated School Board and was instrumental in getting the new Socorro High School built. He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Julia; his son, Roy; his brothers, Ed H., George, Ruben, and Robert; and his sister, Maimie Trujillo. Eliazim is survived by his son, David Richard (Rick) Baca and wife, Diana; his brother, Aguinaldo Baca and wife, Ruth; his sisters, Evangeline Torres; Prescilla Baca and husband, Jimmie; and Betty Alderete and husband, Jacinto; his loving grandchildren, Noel Baca; Daniel Baca; and Erlinda Baca; and his great grandchildren, Michael R. Baca; Kyle Baca; Ryan C. Baca; Katrina Baca; and Adrianna Britt. A Visitation will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at the Daniels Family Funeral Services chapel, 309 Garfield, Socorro, NM with Services to follow at 1:00 pm with Rev. CAFFO, LEWIS RONALD Age 50, born in Albuquerque, NM recently of Las Vegas, NV, passed away on October 28, 2012. He served in the U.S. Navy and was self-employed. H was predeceased by his father, Joseph. He is survived by his sister Leslie Caffo Hovsepian (Mike); two nieces Courtney and Brittney; one great-niece Jade; and one great-nephew Michael. In addition he is survived by his cousin Ray Garcia and a long list of Caffo and Garcia family members. He had an amazing smile, a wicked sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye.

CHAFFEE, HAROLD DEAN Dad was granted his final wish to live out his life in the home he built. He passed away peacefully November 1, 2012, two days after his 88th birthday. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lucille. He is survived by his three children, Mark, Diane, and Brian; son-in-law, Fred LaRoche; daughter-in-law, Erin Chaffee; grandchildren, Cole and Carmen; and sister, Jeanene Larcom and her husband, Gary. Dad served in the Army in WWII. His professional life was devoted to land development, real estate and custom home building. He owned and operated the Harold Chaffee Company. CORNELL, FLORENCE LOUISE Age 99, a resident of Los Ranchos, NM since 2000, died on Sunday, October 28, 2012. Florence grew up in NYC and was a schoolteacher there for over 25 years. She inspired us with her grace, generosity and enthusiasm. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her children, Robert Cornell, Lolly Kersey and partner James Fitzpatrick, Alice and husband David Bris, David Cornell and wife Rosemary Granfield, Wilda and husband Tim McDonough; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Florence was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Nathan Cornell. She was a faithful member of the Heights First Church of the Nazarene. ELLISON, MILES JOSEPH Age 81, a resident of Albuquerque, NM, died Monday, October 29, 2012, only six months after his beloved wife, Dorothea. He is survived by his children; Desiree Woodland and husband, Gary of Albuquerque, Sondra Lang of Albuquerque, Jocelyn Beaulieu of Albuquerque, Jeannine Clock and husband, Ron, of Albuquerque, Joseph Ellison of Lakewood, CO, and Matthew Ellison and wife, Renee of Albuquerque; nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren; mother, Frances Hubbard of Surprise, AZ, brother, Howard Ellison and wife, Sharon of Sun City West, AZ, and sisters, Bea Persinger of Collinsville, OK, and Bernice Ellison of Garland, TX; and many extended family and friends. Mr. Ellison was preceded in death by his father, Miles N. Ellison; his brother, Wayne Ellison and his grandson, Ryan Woodland. Miles, along with his wife were members of Hoffmantown Church in Albuquerque. Miles served in the USAF for 3 years, was a Korean vet, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He worked in Federal Civil Service (BLM and BIA) and retired after 32 years. He ended his career at Weller Architects as an engineer and retired for the second time. Services will be held Monday, November 5, 2012, 11:00 a.m. at FRENCH - Lomas with Steve Kunkle officiating. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery. GRONERT, PATRICIA S. Patricia Belle Sparlin Gronert, March 22, 1936 to October 31, 2012. She was born in Miles City, Montana; her mother and father owned and farmed wheat on a section of land a mile southwest of Brusett, MT. Pat's maternal grandmother (Lay's) was from Kirksville, MO (northeastern MO northern influence) and traveled by wagon train at age 4 years to Virginia City in 1876 the diary of this trip is in the library at Montana State University, Bozeman. The route followed the Iowa/Missouri border west, north to Council Bluffs and across the Missouri River on railroad flatbed cars, then followed the Platte River. Her father, Joseph Sparlin, was from southwestern MO, near Neosho (southern influence). There is a Sparlin family cemetery west of Neosho, just beyond the overhead railroad crossing. Bushwacking was a major problem and the Sparlins temporarily moved south to Arkansas to avoid this. Pat's father Joseph Sparlin died in the hospital at Warm Springs, MT when she was 2 years old and her mother finished her teaching degree to support them. She kept the ranch and shared farming wheat with the JE Stanton family. Pat and her mother and grandmother lived in Dillon for her degree, and then successively in Conrad, Powell, WY, and finally Lewistown. At Powell, her mother taught art to the Japanese children at the Heart Mountain WY internment camp. She moved after 6 months the people in Powell were unkind "She teaches Japs" and she moved to Lewistown. Pat was a gifted soprano from age 12. After high school in Lewistown, she studied one year at the University of Montana, Missoula, and then nursing at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. In summer 1954, while on the obstetrics delivery ward, she met Gerald Gronert, a senior medical student working on the 3-11 shift as a nurse technician. The obstetrics ward delivered 50 babies every 24 hour period in 4 delivery rooms. Pat and Ger became engaged in about 3 weeks and were married by Rev. John Aye Ross on December 26, 1957 at the Methodist Church on the southwest corner of Ashland and Harrison. The church is long gone. They lived in a one room apartment at Mr. Allen's Apartments, then on the northwest corner of Damen and the rapid transit tracks. After graduation in 1958, they moved to St. Louis for Ger's internship at the City Hospital; Pat worked in pediatrics. They lived in the Pruitt-Igoe Housing project that was torn down in 1972. Their apartment was on the 9th floor; the elevator stopped at 1, 5, and 8, so moving in and out was a challenge. Brian Joseph Gronert was born at City Hospital March 8, 1959. In summer 1959 they moved to Denver for 2 years' residency and 5 years' private practice in anesthesia. The pediatric rotation was at LA Children's Hospital, Sept through Dec 1960. Pat and Ger drove in their Plymouth station wagon, and camped along the way, above the Toroweap Overlook on the North Rim and on the beach at Lake Mead. Nancy Ellen Gronert was born at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital November 3, 1960 (indigent care for resident's families). They returned to Denver and Pat had Gail Ann December 1, 1963, and Mary Elizabeth May 21, 1965. They moved to Rochester, MN in summer 1966. Ger was drafted in 1967 and they had 2 years in San Antonio. Pat's interest in horses there led to buying Charley and Bingo. They returned to Rochester and she selected a 23 acre farm south of Pine Island for our home. In time she had 11 horses and ponies, a great time. Pat traveled by bus (limited parking) to Minneapolis to achieve a Bachelor's degree in Greek and Latin at the University of Minnesota. In 1986, we left MN for Davis, CA, and Pat selected a wonderful home with 6 acres pasture between Davis and Woodland for her horses and cats. Upon Ger's retirement in 1999, we moved to Albuquerque, with cats at home and 2 horses, Sam and Cash, boarded at Emile Gonzales' stable. Pat loved her cactus garden, walking the ditch trails, and the overall Albuquerque environment. She had a heart attack in September 2012, with damage to the septum between left and right ventricles. Despite surgery, her lungs were unable to recover from excessive blood flow and pressure, and she died after 54 hospital days.

HIGGINS, KASEY L. On October 25, 2012, Kasey Lee Higgins, age 19, found peace with his Lord following injuries sustained in a car accident in Oklahoma on October 24th. Kasey was born on July 4, 1993 in Albuquerque. He will always be the beloved son of Kiel and Kelli Higgins and adored "little" (6 foot 8 inch) brother of Kelsey Higgins and Kyle Higgins. He was treasured as a loyal friend, and cherished as a grandson, nephew, cousin, and teammate. Kasey is survived by grandparents Judy Graham, and Terry and Sharon Higgins; aunt Holli and uncle Tim Asselin and cousins Graham and Alli; uncle Ronne and aunt Sonja Higgins and cousins Leanne and Jacob; uncle Bari and aunt Lisa Higgins and cousins Cole and Corey; uncle Broc and aunt Gail Higgins and cousins Drew, Tyler, Lindsay, Brenna, and Logan. Kasey lived life to the fullest-always seeing the best in people and always giving 150%. He had a great sense of humor, an infectious laugh, and was good for a joke in any moment. He was famous for that look which said, "You just said something crazy." His legendary dimpled smile and the sparkle in his eyes would light up any situation and place a lasting impression upon your heart. He had a great love for pets, especially dogs, including his beloved canine buddies Roxy and Shwayze. Kasey also enjoyed and excelled in many sports, including football, fishing, mixed martial arts and, above all, baseball. He was an exceptionally talented baseball player at Del Norte High School, Trinidad State Jr. College, Luna Community College, and Oklahoma Panhandle State University. Kasey's family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, care, memories, and support shared during this difficult time. JOHNSON, RALPH PETER JR. Age 80, passed away Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at Kaseman Hospice. His wife, Kay, was by his side during his short, severe illness. Mr. Johnson was with the Boeing Airplane Company for 38 years after graduating from the Civil Engineering Dept. of UNM in 1955. He was Chief Engineer at Boeing LA for five years. He played the French horn with two local Albuquerque groups, The American Legion Band and the Ballut Abyad Shrine Center Band. He played, and swore at, an archaic Civil War era instrument with the New Mexico Territorial Brass Band. Two days a week for five years since re-retiring to Albuquerque, he joined the hard working crew who are progressively restoring Santa Fe RR steam locomotive 2926 to running condition with the hope of eventually pulling excursion trains. His own private nick-name was "Boy Machinist". A constant joy in his life was sailboats. Ralph was an active member and Past Commander of the Lake Charles, LA, Squadron of the United States Power Squadrons. He taught celestial navigation as well as other seamanship courses. Racing, cruising, building, fixing and generally playing with wind powered water craft occupied his thoughts and actions for many years. His brother Bruce Johnson, and wife Carolyn, continue to be actively involved in the sailing world. This more-than-hobby carried over to his son, Bruce Johnson who is in the large ship construction business on the East Coast. Bruce, his wife Pat, their son Cameron and daughter Caitlin live in Georgia. Extended family members live in New Mexico, Colorado, and New York. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Frieda Johnson, and his son, Eric Johnson. The Service of Remembrance will be held at a later date. LIEBERS, MAX P. Age 94, passed away Tuesday, October 30, 2012. He was born in Minden, NE on August 8, 1918, to Henry and Annie Liebers. Max proudly served in the US Army, receiving multiple medals including the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Certificate of Merit, EAMT Ribbon, Victory Ribbon, Army of Occupation Ribbon (Germany), and Certificate of Retirement. He was a member of the Rio Rancho United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Cloe Liebers. Max is survived by his daughter, Carol L. Pulis, of Albuquerque, NM; son, David L. Liebers, of Norfolk, NE; four grandchildren, Steven, Tarasa, Tamara, and Angela; and six great-grandchildren, Devon, Greg, Elisa, Gabby, Sabrina and Atiya. MCMAHON, URSULA of Rio Rancho NM, formerly of Hurricane Utah and Somonauk (Lake Holiday) IL, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday October 17, 2012. She was born November 15, 1923 in Magdeburg, Germany to Richard Blumenthal and Hermine (Kaufhold) Blumenthal. They traveled to the US in 1926 and became citizens in the 1930's. Ursula leaves behind a sister Gertrude Rogers of Buffalo Grove, IL; five children, Susan (Jim) Nebel of St Charles, IL, Pat (Blaine) Emms of Rio Rancho, Shirley (Curt) Miller of Albuquerque, Dennis McMahon of Modesto CA and Linda (Matt) Schofield of Loveland CO; along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ursula was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Rio Rancho. Ursula, along with her beloved husband Roy who passed away in 1998, was very active in church activities, traveling, RV-ing, square dancing, playing bridge and bowling. She was also very talented with her hands, doing beautiful needlework and sewing and various other crafts. She loved gardening, canning and reading a good mystery as well as giving her time to the hospital auxiliary and various organizations. A private Celebration of Ursula's Life, a life well lived, has already taken place. She may be gone now from this earth, but never from our hearts.

MONROE, PERSCILLA Age 85, passed away October 31, 2012 at home in Albuquerque surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her husband, Charles A. Monroe Sr.; children, Charles A. Monroe Jr. and wife, Melinda, of Spokane, WA; Josephine Sanchez and husband, Sigie of Rio Rancho, NM; Cynthia Valle and husband, Dan of El Paso, TX, Judith M. Long of Kansas City, MO; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; her sister, Toni Martinez and husband, Edward and many other family and friends. Mrs. Monroe was preceded in death by her parents, Reyes and Antonia Segura. Perscilla graduated with a business degree and worked as an executive secretary for Skaggs-Alpha Beta before retiring. She was a member of the Shrine of St. Bernadette Catholic Parish and was also active with her husband in the American Legion Post # 13 serving as Auxiliary President. Mrs. Monroe enjoyed family life and traveled extensively with her husband. Perscilla's faith in God was unfailing and she was loved by all who knew her. Her humor and her care for others will not be forgotten. A Memorial Rosary will be recited Sunday, November 4, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. at French - Lomas and a Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 5, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. at the Shrine of St. Bernadette, 11401 Indian School Road NE. MUNDT, VERNON JULIUS Age 76, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away Thursday, October 29, 2012. He was born March 12, 1936, near Litchfield, MN. Vern grew up working on a farm where he participated in 4H events. Later he became involved in tractor pulling competitions. However, his main passion was flying. He purchased an airplane and loved giving friends and family rides. Vern joined the army where he was stationed in Germany as a surveyor. The love of flying guided Vern to enter helicopter flight school. Vern later met Dianne Pesina at a dance and after a long distance courtship were wed on September 18, 1965 in Silver Lake, MN. In 1967, Vern was stationed at White Sands Missile Range near Alamogordo where his main job was missile retrieval. After five years, Vern retired and moved to Albuquerque working as a civilian pilot. During this time, Vern flew for the police department, local television stations and several private companies. He participated in filming for movies, and flew many famous people around New Mexico. His favorite was helping with the 1987 Miss USA pageant. Vern also spent many summers in the Black Hills where he fought forest fires and reseeded damaged areas. In 1983, he joined the Army National Guard Unit in Santa Fe. He participated in Operation Desert Storm and retired with the rank of CW4. In the last several years, Vern volunteered at the VA hospital. He was also a member of the American Legion Honor Guard and assisted at numerous funerals playing Taps on the bugle. He greatly enjoyed being around his grandkids and liked to spoil them just a bit. He is survived by his sons, Craig (Tina Drennan) of Edmonds, WA and Troy (Christine) of North Liberty, IA; two grandchildren, Tyler and Rachel; and sister, Linda of Litchfield, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. Vern was very proud of serving his country and will be missed by all who knew him. MURPHY, MARY FRANCES (6/20/20-9/7/12) Mary F. Murphy passed from this life to the green pastures beside still waters described in the 23rd Psalm on September 7, 2012. She was the beloved wife of Dennis (Pat) Murphy for 62 years before his passing in 2007. The Murphys quietly, anonymously, faithfully, supported children in diverse ways. Mary Frances' eyes lit up at the sight of any child. She encouraged, supported and prayed for every child of whom she was aware. Mary Frances grew up in Madison, Kansas during the Depression. She was the daughter of entrepreneur Aaron Sauder and his wife, a one-room school teacher named Bessie Wiggins Sauder. She graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in journalism and went on to work in Kansas City for the Hereford Journal. She also worked as a substitute teacher, and tutored in various cities where she and Pat lived. Mary Frances is survived by her daughters Pamela Paige Murphy-Young (and husband Mel) and Patty Smith (and husband Paul). She is also survived by her much-loved granddaughters Dakota Young Garves (and husband Eric) and Katherine Keili Young. She cherished the friendship and affection of a wide circle of people not mentioned here.

PETERSON, DONALD P. Donald P. Peterson, of Albuquerque, died on Tuesday, October 19, 2012, surrounded by his family. He was 83. He is survived by his wife Adair, sons Bradley, Russell, and Brian, and daughter Teri. His grand-children are Paige, Michael and Christopher; & great-grandchildren Julia and Sophia. He was the son of the late Palmer and Clara Peterson of Silverdale, Washington. Don received his PhD in mathematics from the University of Oregon, graduating with Phi Beta Kappa honors. He was a Distinguished Member of the Staff of Sandia National Laboratories. He made significant contributions to our National Defense. He served as a math tutor at CMR and SIPI and helped many students to reach their education goals. Don was a consummate outdoorsman. He hiked, backpacked and climbed. He and his beloved wife Adair climbed and hiked into the Grand Canyon to places virtually inaccessible, and to many similar places in Utah and Colorado. He was a member of a Grand Canyon Pioneers Assn. and helped to develop new routes into the Grand Canyon. Don was a member of the New Mexico Mountain Club, Friends of the Sandias and the Sierra Club. He was best known for his 30 years of service with the Albuquerque Mountain Rescue Council where He and Adair helped search for and rescue lost and injured hikers, climbers and victims of aircraft accidents; often in worst possible weather and the most difficult places to reach on the Sandia Mountains. Don was not a large man but he was strong and tough and always got the job done. A quiet and gentle man, Don seemed to never lose his temper even in the most aggravating and frustrating situation. He loved life, his host of friends and New Mexico. One of his favorite quotes was from Dylan Thomas: "Old Age should not go quietly into the night, but should rage and fight the dimming of the light." As he was dying of rare form of leukemia, Don fought hard for his life by using experimental medicines that he hoped would help others to survive. He fought until the end when the light finally went out. Don was cremated. PUTMAN, JUDITH ANN April 15, 1944 - November 1, 2012 TO KNOW HER WAS TO LOVE HER Judy passed away peacefully at her home in Santa Fe on All Saints Day, Nov. l, 2012, after a courageous 3 1/2 year struggle with peritoneal cancer. Born in Chicago to Dorothy Lenora Durbin and William Hanlon Putman, Judy lived with her family in Chicago and Shreveport, LA, before they settled in Farmington, NM, when she was six. There she attended Catholic elementary school and Farmington High School, from which she graduated in 1962. She received a B.S. in education from the University of New Mexico in 1966, and she returned there at mid-career to obtain an M.A. in counseling. Judy was one of the first eight teachers hired by the Technical Vocational Institute (now Central New Mexico University) in Albuquerque, and she taught business skills there for 32 years. Upon her retirement from teaching, she became director of development of the Presbyterian Ear Institute in Albuquerque. She moved to Santa Fe after marrying Lee Dirks on December 28, 2001. While living in Albuquerque, Judy volunteered for many years at the Barrett House, a Catholic nonprofit that "provides housing and supportive services to women and children who are striving to break the cycle of homelessness." After moving to Santa Fe, she served for several years as a member of the board of directors of the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Her survivors include her husband, Lee Dirks, of Santa Fe; her son, Barry Epstein, his wife Cris, and their daughter Catie and son Charlie of Albuquerque; her daughter, Stacey Epstein, her husband Sol Henik, and their daughters Alexis and Aliyah of Lafayette, CA; her sister, Susan Putman, of Chandler, AZ, and her brother, William Putman, and his wife Kate of Phoenix, AZ; and many other loving relatives and legions of friends from the East Coast to Maui and many places in between. Judy's family expresses profound appreciation to Dr. Carolyn Muller and her colleagues at the University of New Mexico Cancer Center in Albuquerque for the superb care and caring that she received during her illness. We will be forever grateful. At Judy's request, a small private Roman Catholic service will be held for Judy, with only her immediate family present. QUEEN, RICHARD P. Age 83, passed away on October 21, 2012 from cancer. He was a TSgt. in the Air Force which he retired from. He was preceded in death by his wife Theodora Queen and daughter Julie Delos Santos. Richard has one son, Johnny Queen; two daughters, Gloria Bueno and Margaret Montano; six grandchildren, Endora, Ruthann, Nicky and wife Maria, Barbara, Angelina, and Monique; 13 great-grandchildren, Antoinette, Elijah, Gia, Nicole, Alysia, Alex, Nick Jr., Nina, Ronnie, Naya and Noah, Greg and Milia. Richard was the manager at Armored Mini Storage for 20 years and was well-respected. The service and burial will be at the Veterans Cemetery in Santa Fe at 12:45pm on Tuesday, November 6th.
