CONNOR Our beautiful gift, Connor Mantsch, left this world way too soon at only 14 years, on Thursday, July 26, 2012. Connor was a truly amazing human being. Anybody who knew Connor understood how unique and special he was. Connor was an incredible musician, a strong athlete, and a great student. He had the most infectious smile, heart-warming giggle, and was known for his funny sense of humor. He preferred the natural world to video games, kept his gardens neat and lush, and had a mind for creativity and inventions that is warmly remembered by his friends and family. Connor had uncommon integrity and character, and his dedication to excellence was evident in all that he attempted. Connor was thoughtful and a student of life. He was a dreamer and had a clear vision of his future. He found success in what he did and has been described as a "remarkable young mind." Connor was a wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew, and friend. While Connor was quiet and introspective initially, one discovered the very loyal, loving and dedicated friend that quickly emerged. His gentle playfulness will be missed dearly. Connor was an immensely caring brother and he loved his sisters, MacKenzie and Erin dearly. They will miss him more than words can say. May Connor's kindness, depth and genuine nature serve as an inspiration to all whose lives he touched and remind us of the way to live best. The community and world is a better place because Connor was in it sharing so much of himself and his talents. Shari and Bryan are immensely proud and grateful to have had the privilege to be his parents and know that the world loses a wonderful and beautiful soul. From the early age of 4 he aspired to be a doctor, even though no one in his family had gone to college. Luck came his way when a Career Day counselor from Grinnell College came to Valley High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and paved the way for a sports scholarship to that prestigious school. In 1961 he began his studies at the University of Colorado's School of Medicine. In 1964, during his Junior year in medical school, he married Ileta Atchley and began their life of 48 years together. Drafted for Vietnam in 1967, they spent three years in Germany as an Air Force doctor, returning to St. Louis, Missouri and Barnes Hospital where he did his Internship and Residency. The early part of his medical career was filled with pioneering research on chronic kidney disease. In August 1978 he started a new life in private practice in Monroe, Louisiana. By 1982, he and Dr. Joan Blondin opened the first Northeast Louisiana Dialysis Center in Monroe, ultimately growing the practice to six clinics in the region. Dr. Rutherford was influential in establishing a rural health clinic in Start, Louisiana with Jennifer Bennett who worked with him since 1981. Since November 2006, he worked at LSU Conway as a full professor of clinical family medicine, always teaching his residents to question everything, and to learn the "why" not just the "what," and always to listen to the patient (his mom always told him that). He received the teacher of the year award in 2010. He is survived by his wife Ileta; son Phillip and his wife Felicia Stingone and their two daughters Gabriella and Francesca; son Jason and his wife Jessica Rutherford and their two daughters Melanie and Nina; sister Margie Kimbrough, and a 'surrogate' son Joe Mansour. He is also survived by numerous - sister and brother-in-laws, nieces and nephews. According to Ernie's wishes, he will be cremated and returned to New Mexico. A visitation will be held at Kilpatrick Funeral Home, 1200 Lamy Lane in Monroe from 5 to 8 pm, August 1st. Memorial services will be officiated by Rev. R. Crandall and held at McClendon Baptist Church, 206 Downing Pines Road, West Monroe at 11 am, August 2nd, 2012. Pallbearers will be Rob Atchley, Cory Atchley, Casey Lang, Cody Lang, Louis Elias and Dean Hebert. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Joan Blondin and Dr. Herschel Harter. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given to Grinnell College in memory of William "Ernie" Rutherford '61. Friends and family wish to establish a scholarship that will benefit Grinnell Students interested in pursuing a degree in medicine. Those wishing to contribute may do so by sending a check to Grinnell College, Old Glove Factory, Attn: Meg Jones Bair, 733 Broad Street, Grinnell, IA 50112. SPURRY --
DAVID CHARLES November 8, 1947 - July 27, 2012 Age 64, of Albuquerque, passed away at home surrounded by his family, after a two year battle with cancer. He was born in Hamilton, Ohio, and grew up in Northfield, Illinois on Chicago's North Shore. He graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, IL in 1965, attended the University of Denver, and served in the Army. After determining that following in his father's footsteps at Sears was not his calling, Dave moved his family to Albuquerque in 1976 where he founded Sandia Construction and worked as a contractor for 30 years. Despite being the doormat of the National League, Dave remained a fiercely loyal Cubs fan to the end. He enjoyed decades of games with his friends and family and was boisterous in his rendition of the 7th inning stretch. Quick-witted and a genius with his hands, Dave could spew out the correct answer (in the form of a question, thank you) to nearly any "Jeopardy!" question while rerouting drainpipe fittings faster than most actual "Jeopardy!" contestants could say, "I'll take 'Plumbing' for $1,000, Alex." Dave built many fine things during his lifetime, often presenting his handiwork as gifts to his family and friends, and he never turned down the opportunity to help someone in need of some expert handyman assistance. He was also deadly accurate with a crescent wrench up to 60 yards, and possessed the most colorful vocabulary for tools that simply didn't work correctly. He was a member of the Albuquerque Boat Club and American Legion in Elephant Butte, NM enjoying the water, his owls and the occasional beer on the porch of his house at the lake. Dave is father to Laura Spurry Passman, Timothy Spurry, and Katherine Spurry (Andrew Parkhill); grandfather to Andrew Passman, Jackson Spurry, Zoe Parkhill, and Willow Spurry. He is survived by his sister Nancy Spurry (Ted Rehm); his life partner Glenda Miller and her family, Danette Townsend (Michael Henningsen) and Ryan Townsend. In lieu of flowers, for friends who so wish, contributions may be made to a charity of their choice in Dave's name. Services will be held Friday, August 3 at 4:00 pm at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 12121 NM-14 N, Cedar Crest, NM 87008, poplchurch.com with a reception immediately following at his home in Cedar Crest.
