BENVENISTI -- ETTI ESTHER Died on 29 April 2012, following a long illness. The interment took place at a graveside service within the 24 hour commandment of Jewish law at the Chavurat Hamidar (Fellowship of the Desert) section of the Fairview Cemetery in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Benvenisti tribal origins date back to early Spain with dispersion throughout Europe and Africa during the Inquisition in the 15th Century. Etti was a fifth generation Israeli. Early childhood years were spent in Jerusalem with her favorite song, Y'rushalayim Shel Zahav, the poignant link with "the most beautiful city in the world," Jerusalem of gold. Her proud Sephardic roots and family contributions given quietly became the organizing principle of her life. Like her father Eliezer, and mother Allegra, she was pure Sephardic and a continual creative contributor to this world. Etti was the middle child in a family of seven. Yona of Deerfield Beach, Florida, Ahron of North Miami Beach, Florida, Sara of Beverly Hills, California and Shalom of Tel Aviv, Israel were with Etti in the final days. Illness prevented Leon in Israel from being here. Albert, the eldest brother, died in Israel in 2009. Family and friends from different parts of the world attended the last days and the burial of this unique woman. Etti was married to E. A. "Tony" Mares with two children of their marriage. Vered of Anchorage, Alaska has become an invaluable foundation of satisfaction and support to Etti, close by her side throughout her illness. Unfortunately daughter Galit died at age 20 in 1994. Etti's stepson, Kevin has been a source of fulfillment and all mourn the abrupt and grievous loss of Clayton Rich, her dedicated partner in 1996. Etti married Dr. John R. Graham in Jerusalem in a site overlooking the Old City walls thus completing a circle in life. As a "True Daughter of Israel" Etti embraced the world one individual, one family, one community at a time. She came to America to study at age twenty and fell in love with New York City. Work with a publisher led to educational research for the Head Start program on cross-cultural differences evaluating Hispanic and Native American children. When word of the impending arrival of the Israeli educator circulated in Albuquerque, Etti received an invitation from the Chavurat Hamidar (Fellowship of the Desert) to establish the first preschool Gan program in Albuquerque. The immediate link to the University of New Mexico led to a full career with her clinical focus on children and families, and teaching of students and physicians within the Child Psychiatry program at the School of Medicine. On retirement, Etti taught in multiple foreign countries amidst her travels. With an engaging smile, demure style and attitude of inquiry, Etti was without judgment and won over individuals, officials, even politicians, to her causes in repairing this world. Whether an innovative community service, wise counsel or using a creative aggressive approach to problem solving, she became the advocate for those in need without a voice or vote. When self-serving administrators and unethical providers drifted off course and failed to provide services and leadership, Etti called them out and shared the reality. Seeing her approach could send a shiver down the spine as they'd say, "Here comes trouble." Always a strong and fierce advocate for others, she changed people's lives and made this world a better place. Life was worth living and fun when you were around Etti if you could keep up with her pace. To celebrate the milennium Etti scaled Annapurna in the Himalayas of north-central Nepal, complete with oxygen and one Sherpa guide. At the end of the descent back at Base Camp and with everything in place, Etti commented she was ready to rest. The guide replied, " Madame, I never thought I would hear that from you." The memorial candle continues to burn until the Shiv'ah ends on Sunday morning merging into Sheloshim, the thirty day mourning period. All friends are invited and welcomed to a graveside service at Fairview Memorial Park on May 30, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. when Etti's marker will be unveiled. Sim Shalom. "Peace, goodness, and blessing; grace and love and mercy: may these descend on us, on all Israel, Your people, and all the world." Amein.

BOWERS -- RUTH HUSTON A resident of Albuquerque since 1958, and of New Mexico since 1945, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 30th at her home she shared with her son and daughter-in-law for the last 5 months in Aurora, Colorado. She was 90 years old. Ruth was born in Iowa Falls, Iowa on March 1, 1922. Her father owned the local general store. Ruth graduated with honors from Ellsworth Junior College in Iowa Falls. When World War II broke out, she, like millions of other young women of the time, moved to Washington DC to help out with the war effort. There she met her future husband, Bob. They married and moved to New Mexico, where, in 1958, she helped him establish Bowers Electric. One of Ruth's outstanding qualities was that she was very organized. This served her well as she began her career as a book keeper and office manager at this time. Later, she worked for the Coleman Company, a manufacturer of jewelry for several years. She finished her career working for her son at Sundance Electric. In 1986 Ruth began a study of the Bible with Jehovah's Witnesses. As a result of that, in 1990, at the age of 68, she was baptized, and began a new chapter in her life of service to Jehovah God. Since then she has been a faithful member of the Valley View Congregation, always in attendance at the meetings, and active in the public ministry. In addition to her new found faith, Ruth focus in life was always her family. Her pride and joy was her sons and their families. She could always be counted on to be there for the events of life and to be supportive through all the ups and downs that life brings. Ruth is survived by her two sons Robert and Ronald Bowers; her daughter-in-law Karin: five grandchildren Jeff Bowers, Beth Diamond, Patrick Bowers, Ken Bowers, and Melissa Bowers; six great-grandchildren, Sarah, Adam, and Rachel Diamond, Dalton and Michael Bowers, and Timothy Bowers; as well as nieces, nephews, and many cousins. Ruth carried herself with dignity and grace and she maintained those qualities right down to the very last moments of her life. Ruth loved and was loved by everyone she met and her many friends and her family will miss her dearly. Her confidence in the resurrection hope was strong up to the end. We eagerly look forward to the day when we will see her again in God's new world, free from all the ailments of old age. What a joyful day that will be! A memorial service will be held for her at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 6509 Signal NE at 4:00 PM on Saturday May 5th.

BUCHLEITER -- MILDRED IRENE (ELGIN) was born in Denver, Colorado on November 2, 1915, the third of Alpheus Lewis Elgin and Ethel (Brintnall) Elgin's four daughters. She grew up in the small town of Arvada, where she developed her lifelong love of singing. Although she often joked about it being just a bit scandalous, she fell in love with a (slightly) younger man, and she married Orval Roy Buchleiter on October 6, 1939. Shortly after the birth of their first son, Orval was called to service in World War II. Mildred stayed in Arvada while her husband served as a medic in the European Theatre. After Orval's safe return, they were blessed with two more children. In 1955, Orval's job with the telephone company demanded a move to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Laying aside concerns that the family might need to learn Spanish, Mildred packed up the household and moved from Colorado. In Albuquerque, the family put down deep roots, becoming the vital heart of their neighborhood and vibrant members of their new-found church family at Trinity United Methodist Church. She became an active member of United Methodist Women, eventually serving as President of the Local, District and Conference levels of the organization. Mildred sang in the church's Chancel Choir for years, and was a fixture at every church potluck and dinner. Never one to be self-important, she was a quiet and effective leader with a deeply rooted faith in God. She and Orval loved square dancing, and spent many an evening swinging around a dance floor. Mildred was deeply committed to her family. She served as a leader for both Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. She and Orval created a gracious home where family was always comfortable and guests were warmly welcomed. As their family grew and scattered across the country, Mildred and Orval's home remained the gathering point for holidays, and on countless Thanksgivings, Christmases and Easter Sundays the home would be filled with intoxicating aromas as she prepared amazing meals in her impossibly small kitchen. They enjoyed spending evenings playing pinochle with friends or dominoes and "Chicken Scratch" with their grandchildren. She had a love of simple things: the colors of fall foliage in the mountains, family camping trips, the blazing colors of a New Mexico sunset, the cool light of a full moon. Mildred and Orval shared a deep and abiding love, celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary in October of 2004. It was clear to all who saw them look at each other that their love continued to grow and flourish with each passing year. They continued to enjoy the simple pleasure of holding hands and flirting with each other until his passing in July of 2005. Mildred Buchleiter passed away quietly in the company of her family on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at the age of 96 years. As she is reunited with Orval and seated as an honored guest at the Lord's table, her memory is vibrantly alive and treasured by her survivors: Orin Lewis Buchleiter and wife Leslie of Edgewood, NM; Charles Roy Buchleiter and wife Suzanne of Dayton, TN; Wanda Kay West and husband Ray of Siloam Springs, AR; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great granddaughters; and far too many family members, dear friends and loved ones to mention. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 7, 2012 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 3715 Silver Ave. SE. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Those wishing to send an expression of sympathy are urged to consider making a donation in Mildred's memory either to the Trinity United Methodist Church, 3715 Silver Ave SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108; or to the New Mexico Boys & Girls Ranch, 6209 Hendrix NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110.
