ANAYA -- MARK KENNETH Born July 7, 1962 in Albuquerque, NM and passed away February 20, 2012 in Prescott, AZ. ARNER -- HAROLD L. Age 75, a resident of Albuquerque since 1977, died February 24th, 2012. He is survived by his wife, Betty Ann Arner; son, Michael Arner and wife, Dasha of Albuquerque; daughter, Rebecca Brown and husband, Dennis of Boston, MA; grandchild, Caden Brown; brother, Russell Arner of Brunswick, OH; sister, Janet Gray and husband Ron of Broadmax, VA; and friends. He was an active member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, New Mexico Trout Fly Tiers, and Habitat for Humanity. He served 22 years in the Air Force, achieving the rank of Lt. Colonel - and was decorated multiple times for his service in Vietnam. Services will be held Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 10:00 a.m., with a reception afterwards at St. Luke Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery. BACA -- JOE J. passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, February 23, 2012. Born in Mentmore, NM, he moved to Albuquerque where he attended Stronghurst Elementary School and graduated from St. Marys High School. Corporal Joe J. Baca was a proud member of the Marine Corps and a veteran of the Korean War. After completing his military service, he enjoyed a very successful career in law enforcement. Joe enjoyed fishing, cheering on the Dallas Cowboys and living it up in Las Vegas, NV. He gave generously of his time to the American Legion Post 100 and the VFW and was a member of the Catholic Church. Joe was a loving husband to his wife Thelma Miera Baca; a nurturing and generous father to his sons Dennis Michael Baca and wife Leigh; William J. Baca and wife Caroline; and Joseph Baca Jr. He was a caring and kind grandfather to his seven grandsons, and one granddaughter, five great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters. He is also survived by three granddaughters-in-law, one grandson-in-law and three step-grandchildren. His parents, Joe and Louisa Baca, and a baby sister preceded him in death. Joe will be dearly missed by his many friends and relatives. A recitation of the Holy Rosary will take place on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 9:30am, at the Church of the Risen Savior, 7701 Wyoming NE, Albuquerque, NM 87109; A Funeral Mass will immediately follow the Rosary service. BAKER -- MARY ALICE Age 73, passed away February 20, 2012 in Albuquerque. Mary was born in Owatonna, MN to Charles and Margie Bailey. She met and married her first husband, John Haigh and moved to Colorado Springs where they raised five children. She married her second husband, Eugene Baker in 1981 and relocated to Albuquerque, where she resided for 31 years. Together they lived a love story that we all should be so lucky to experience. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving husband of 31 years, Gene; her wonderful sisters, Jean and husband Richard, Patsy and husband Gerald, Lois and husband Monte; and her five children, Lynn, Michael and wife Judy, Sandra, David and wife Debi, and Kathryn and husband Bradley. BOWEN -- G. RICHARD (DICK) Age 90, a resident of Albuquerque, NM, passed away peacefully on the 23rd of February, 2012. Greatly loved by his family, he is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jeannine Skinner Bowen; his three daughters and their spouses, Leslie Bowen and Dennis Bley of Oakton, VA, Betsy and Chris Greco of Albuquerque, NM, and Sarah and Jesus Garcia of Albuquerque, NM. He is also survived by his five granddaughters Katrina Ford (Tommy), Kallista Bley, Liza Bley, Jessica Benowitz (Michael), and Emma Whitehurst. Dick was born November 5, 1921, in Lorain, OH. He graduated as class president from Lorain High School in 1940. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Northwestern University in 1947. An avid athlete, Dick earned the spot of catcher for the Northwestern baseball team. He was a member of Gamma Beta Chapter of Sigma Nu fraternity. He proudly served as Lt (JG) in the U. S. Navy during WWII commanding an LCT in the Mediterranean. Dick obtained his CPA at the University of Illinois in 1951 and worked as an accountant primarily in the film and advertising industry. He served as treasurer on many boards including the Chicago Advertising Club and the United Methodist Church of Barrington, IL. Dick and Jeannine were long-time residents of Barrington, IL where they raised their girls and were active members of the community and of the United Methodist Church. They retired to Albuquerque in 1992. Dick had a love of golf, gardening, and travel. BRISCOE -- FAYE 11/28/1919 - 02/09/2012 Age 92, Faye passed away peacefully at Kaseman Hospice following a recent fall. She was born in Lorena, TX to Mary and Edgar McIlhaney and lived on farms near Hagerman and Artesia as a child. Faye was preceded in death by husband Orlando, and her former daughter-in-law, Joyce Briscoe. Survivors include her son John, and daughter-in-law, Anita Briscoe. Faye, a housewife and a "Rosie The Riveter" from WWII, lived in the Artesia and Loco Hills, NM area all her life until she moved to Albuquerque following her husband's death 10 years ago. CARPENTER -- GLORIA D. Age 79 of Gallup, was called to be with her husband on February 22, 2012. She was born November 29, 1932 in Commerce, OK to Jess C. Marlow and Ethel B. Dial. She moved to Albuquerque, NM at the age of six, later graduating from Albuquerque High. She remained in Albuquerque until she met and married her husband, Luther Carpenter Jr. on October 4, 1957. They moved to Gallup, NM and began their family. They were the proud parents of Steven L. Carpenter of Albuquerque, Nancy G. Gomez and her husband Sam, Donna S. Casias and her husband Raymond, and Linda J. Guldy, all of Gallup. Their family grew to include grandchildren, Elizabeth A. (Gomez) Juarez, Samantha J. Gomez and Crystal D. Casias of Gallup, Charley B. Carpenter, Angela D. (Carpenter) Gianes, Jodie E. (Carpenter) MacPhee and her husband Joey, and Tiffany L. Carpenter, all of Albuquerque. Great-grandchildren include Camryn R. Juarez and Mateo A. Juarez of Gallup, Brandyn J. MacPhee, Tylor E. MacPhee, Kearstyn E. MacPhee, and Jade A. Gianes, all of Albuquerque. Gloria devoted her life to her family. She always looked forward to her craft shows, reading and puzzles. She will be deeply missed by her dog, Cricket, and all those who knew and loved her. Survivors also include her brother, J.C. COLBY -- ROBERT Our much loved Robert Colby passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2012. It is no surprise to any who knew him that in dying he showed the same grace, gentleness, brilliance, and humor that he had shown throughout his wonderful life. Rob will be dearly remembered by all of the many, many people whose lives he touched so deeply. He was a forensic psychologist and private-practice psychotherapist for many years, a poet and constant writer, a performance artist, and a person completely creative in his life. Robert Edward Colby was born in Albuquerque on October 8, 1948, to Ed and Anita Colby. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Isabel Boldizsar. Also, he is survived by his brother, Raggio Colby and his wife Myra and family of Denver, Colorado. He leaves behind many cousins from the historic New Mexico Seligman family, and many, many friends. Rob recently described himself as follows: "Avocations: amateur essayist; professional poet (lifetime income from poetry: $75); unpublished novelist; deltiologist (postcard collector); and, of course, perpetual traveler." Robert had an encyclopedic memory, a vast store of knowledge, and his stories were amazingly timely and profound. He was an extremely whimsical person who brought great joy to his many friends. His gifts to us in his time here on Earth were without measure. He was beautiful in every way. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, March 3rd at 1:30 P.M. at the Center for Spiritual Living, 2801 Louisiana N.E.

COREY -- RUTH EVELYN was called to our Lord on February 22, 2012, in Midland, Texas following a lengthy illness. She was born in Winfield, Iowa on June 2, 1913 to Rev. J. C. and Emily Fitzwater Currie. She graduated from Tarkio College, Tarkio, Missouri in 1933. As a missionary in Assiut, Egypt, she taught at the Presley Memorial Institute. Ruth returned to the U.S. when WWII began. After training at Chanute Field Army Air Base, she served as an instructor in the operation and maintenance of flight instruments, first for the U.S. Army Air Corp and then for the Brazilian Air Corp in Sao Paulo, Brazil. At the end of WWII, Ruth returned to the States for graduate study in the Psychology Department at the University of Iowa where she met Lt. Paul F. Corey, a veteran of the war in the Pacific who was studying law at the Law of Commons. Ruth and Paul were married June 4th, 1949 and made their home in Albuquerque. Ruth earned a Masters Degree in Education at the University of New Mexico and taught first grade at Bel Air Elementary School until her retirement. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Clyde and Paul Currie, and by her husband of 30 years. She is survived by her three children: Dr. Jean P. Corey and husband, Thomas Anderson of Tucumcari, NM; Ellen R. Vaughn and husband, Richard of Fort Sumner, NM; and Fred C. Corey and wife, Deborah of Midland, TX. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Paul F. Corey and fiancee, Nicole Carver of Dallas, TX; Daniel W. Corey and wife, Monica of Midland, TX; and Amy Vaughan of Stillwater, OK. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many, Rosie lived life fully and completely while her strength, humor, patience and humility. She was admired by all who knew her. FLOERSHEIMER -- GILDA Age 87, passed away in Albuquerque, NM on February 20, 2012. Gilda was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 30, 1924, to James and Bertha Sternburg. She was a graduate of City College "Downtown" in New York City with a degree in Business Administration, focusing on International Trade. She was a member of the honor society, Beta Gamma Sigma. In 1946 Gilda married her college love Bertram Goodman, deceased in 1966. Gilda worked as a stock broker for over 20 years and was one of the first women present on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. In 1973 she was happily married to Albert Floersheimer, who died in 1980. After being widowed, she retired to Albuquerque in 1981, and was active as a docent of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, where she served on the board. Following this, she volunteered at the Unicef store in Old Town and served in various other volunteer roles over the years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law: Ami and Martin Peterson of Albuquerque, and Adrienne and Dan Corti of Missoula, Montana; as well as her grandsons, Ben and Nick Peterson, and Jay Corti. In lieu of flowers, a contribution in Gilda's memory may be made to Roadrunner Food Bank at 5840 Office Blvd, NE; Albuquerque, NM 87109. A memorial is being planned.

GATES -- ELIZABETH "LIZ" Passed away February 24, 2012. She was born to Archie and Clara Dionne in Worcester, MA on February 5, 1923. She married Richard Gates, Sr. May 16, 1943. She and Dick moved to Albuquerque in the late 40's to raise their four children. Liz was a homemaker as well as a saleslady at Woolworths and Dillards. She loved dancing and listening to Frank Sinatra. She also loved trips to Las Vegas, NV with Dick and their many friends. She had a special friendship with their neighbors and friends Jean and Tom Garcia, Esther and Andy Sanchez, Ted and Edna Niforos, and Sue and Frank Sacco. She was preceded in death by her husband Dick Gates; her son, Rick Gates; her sister Edie Fancy; and her brothers-in-law Bob Gates and Ned Gattas. She is survived by her daughter Betty Doxey; her son Jim Gates (Margaret); her daughter Pearly Gates; her brothers Archie and Ernie Dionne and their families; her grandchildren Angie Crosby (George), Sandi Hamilton (Daniel), Kim Blea (JJ), Richard Doxey, Meghan Gates, Becky Gates (Eric), Charlie Gates (Jody); Julie Huerta (Mark) and CJ Vanderlip; her daughters-in-law Lynn Gates and Virginia Lenberg (Greg); her sister-in-law Adele Gattas; 14 greatgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. GONZALES -- RAYLYNN RENEE Age 16, was born on June 26, 1995 and raised in Albuquerque, NM. She was given her wings to fly home to God on Thursday, February 23, 2012 in her home surrounded by her family and friends.. RayLynn lived a full and joyous life, despite the disease she carried every day. She was a loving and caring child that opened her arms and heart to everyone. RayLynn is preceded in death by her sister, Savannah Montoya, her grandpa, Louie Benavidez, her great grandma Helen T. Gonzales, great grandpa, Jose M. Baldonado, great grandparents, Delfino and Lucy Saiz and her best friend, Judy Krivanek. GROSS -- FRED A. JR. Age 88, passed away on February 17, 2012, of natural causes. He was born in Fulton, Missouri, on April 2, 1923. He was a resident of White Rock, NM, since May 1978. Prior to that he lived in Albuquerque, NM, and many other cities during his military career. He was preceded by his wife of 64 years, Susan Kist Gross. He is survived by daughters Joyce G. Freiwald and Cheryl A. Boone of Albuquerque, NM; Narra S. Tsiagkouris of Los Alamos, NM; son Fred A. Gross lll of Santa Fe, NM; sister Helen Marie Sisler of Tulsa, OK; ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother John H. Gross of Rockport, TX. Fred was an honor high school graduate in Fulton, Missouri, where he also starred as an All-Conference and All-State football player and captained the debate team. He studied chemistry at Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri. After World War II, he completed the Bachelor and Master of Science Degrees in Physics at the University of Wisconsin and has completed additional work at the University of New Mexico and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. Fred joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1963 serving as a navigator, instructor, post engineer, and nuclear weapons research and development officer. He served with the B-24 Heavy Bombers in Italy during World War II and with the B-29 Heavy bombers in Okinawa, England, and Kansas. His decorations included the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, the Presidential Unit Citation with one Oak Leaf cluster, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle East Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and Air Force Longevity Service Award with four Oak Leaf Clusters. After retiring from the Air Force, he spent four years with Sandia Corporation as a staff member and supervisor, nine years as Vice President of NDRC, Inc., and two years as Associate and Interim Director of the Western Interstate Energy Board/WINB in Denver, Co. He retired from Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1988 after serving as group leader in the Budget Division and as an analyst in the Engineering and Analysis Division. In 1968 he was appointed to fill an unexpired term in the New Mexico State Senate and was re-elected in 1970 and 1972. He served on the Finance, Rules, Conservation, and Education Committees; the Land Use Advisory Council; the Legislative Interim Energy Committee and the Energy Task Force of the National Conference of State Legislatures. Active in conservation work in the legislature and through the New Mexico and Colorado Wildlife Federations, Fred was also active in the Boy and Girl Scouts for over 50 years. He served as Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, Explorer Advisor, and as a member of the Executive Council of the Great Southwest Council. He completed Woodbadge training and was awarded the Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow. He received the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts. He also was Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Sangre de Cristo Girl Scout Council. As a life member of the National Wildlife Federation, he served as Vice President, as a member of the Board of Directors, and on the Executive Committee. Fred also served on the Board of Trustees of the Thorne Ecological Institute, as Vice Chairman of the Los Alamos County Planning and Zoning Commission, and on the Board of Directors of the Rocky Mountain Center of Environment. Fred was the Vice Chairman of the Los Alamos County Planning and Zoning Commission. He served as Chairman of the Los Alamos County Public Utility Board. During Fred's service in this position, Los Alamos County purchased the electrical and gas distribution systems from the Public Service Company of New Mexico, and issued $110 million in bonds to finance both the expansion of the Utility Department and the construction of two hydroelectric plants on the Chama River. Fred was President and a board member of the Los Alamos Sportsmen's Club. He served as Director, Vice-President, and President of the Roadrunner Chapter of the Retired Officers Association. He was a life member of the New Mexico, National Rifle Association. Fred was also a member of the 455th Bomb Group, (the group he flew with during World War II.) Fred and his wife Susan were active with the Los Alamos Hospital Auxiliary for many years. He served as president and volunteered on many different committees. Fred was a member of the White Rock United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the Finance Committee, the Board of Trustees and the Permanent Endowment Fund. For the last two years, Fred resided in Santa Fe, NM, where he was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church of Santa Fe. Memorial services will be conducted at White Rock United Methodist Church in White Rock, NM on Monday, February 27, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. A private interment service will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. GUERRANT -- WILLIAM BARNETT Age 89, died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, February 19, 2012. Mr. Guerrant was born in Danville, KY. He served his country honorably in the US Air Force from 1942 until 1945 as a bomber pilot with the B-26 Marauders in the European Theatre. He attended Austin College in Sherman, TX, graduating in 1946. He earned his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1949. After working a few years as a chemist in industry, he became a Full Professor at Austin College. During his years at Austin College, he was awarded a National Science Foundation grant for 1961-1962. During that period he studied at Imperial College, University of London, under Professor D.H.R. Bardeen. In 1968, he went to Texas Tech University as a Full Professor and taught there until 1984. After retiring from Texas Tech, he served as a volunteer Professor of Chemistry at Tunghai University, Taiwan until 1986 under the auspices of the United Board for Higher Christian Education in Asia. From 1986-1988 he served in the same capacity at Hong Kong Baptist College in Hong Kong. William is survived by his wife, Mary Thorington Guerrant; his son, Will Guerrant and wife, Theresa; and two granddaughters, Stephanie Michelle and Lauren Marie Guerrant. GUTIERREZ -- MARTIN "MARTY" JEROME Beloved son, brother, husband, father and friend, passed away peacefully in his home Sunday, February 19, 2012 at the age of 47. He is survived by his wife Regina; children, Benjamin (Amanda), Neysa, Martin and Selena. Marty was born to Elizario and Cecelia Gutierrez on December 22, 1964 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is also survived by his mother Cecelia Gutierrez; five siblings, Gloria Madrid and husband Efraim from Albuquerque, Ricky Gutierrez and wife Del from Albuquerque, Cindy Gutierrez and husband Simon from Albuquerque, Christine Minns and husband Jim from Estancia, Raymond "Tony" Gutierrez and wife Debbie from Estancia; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and many, many friends. Martin was preceded in death by his father Elizario Gutierrez. Marty graduated from Highland High School and then went to the army. He loved the outdoors, camping, boating, fishing, camp fires, and etc. Whether they lost or won, Marty was a faithful Dallas Cowboys fan. When you say man's best friend, that's how Marty treated all his animals. He also loved being with his family and friends and his cul-de-sac crew Chief, Little Man, Johnny 4 Pac and Dimples having a good time listening to his oldies blaring on the radio next to the bon fire. HICKEY -- HOWARD (WARD) JAMES JR. HICKEY, HOWARD (WARD) JAMES JR. Age 76, of Holyoke, MA passed away February 22, 2012 peacefully at his home in Albuquerque, NM after a long battle with cancer. During his final days, Howard was surrounded and lovingly cared for by his 5 children. Born in Holyoke, MA, the son of the late Howard and Margaret (Dineen) Hickey, He graduated from Fairfield University (Fairfield, CT) after an honorable term in The United States Marine Corp. He enjoyed a long successful career in finance and banking which led him on many travels. After retiring from banking he fulfilled a lifelong dream of teaching. He was honored as a Teaching Professor and a New Mexico Banker's Endowed Fellow at The University of New Mexico's Anderson School of Management. KYRLACH -- ROBERT EUGENE IN MEMORY OF ROBERT EUGENE KYRLACH February 12, 1922 to February 23, 2012 Robert Eugene Kyrlach succumbed following his 90th birthday and after a brief illness. His lifelong companion and friend, Jean Kyrlach, and their four children Richard Kyrlach, Mona Pilgrim, Margot Kyrlach, and Millie Leahy, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren survive him. Robert Kyrlach was a loved and respected science teacher at Highland High School and Sandia High School within the Albuquerque Public School District, a noteworthy career that spanned over 40 years. As an aside, many of his more faithful students knew him as the "wizard". He and Jean had moved to Albuquerque from Akron, Ohio in 1949, initially owning a small business in Albuquerque and later joining the School District. Robert ("Bob") was the founder of the Albuquerque Astronomical Society in the 1950's, which became one of the largest amateur astronomy associations in the country. Among his many interests and activities, Bob was often helpful in encouraging and assisting others in building their own telescopes with which to explore the heavens. Bob's interest and dedication to the sciences, and particularly to astronomy won him the respect and admiration of students and friends alike. Bob was always dedicated to and energized by outdoor activities and participated vigorously in rock and mountain climbing, bicycling, kayaking, and hiking, often in distant and challenging terrains. (Bob was also a member of the New Mexico Mountain Club and the Albuquerque Mountain Rescue Council.) This man of determination continued many of these strenuous activities well into his senior years. He was not one to shy from challenge. In many respects, Robert was truly a "Renaissance Man". He was an active member of the Albuquerque Civic Light Opera as both a performer and hearty supporter. Robert Kyrlach will be remembered and he will be missed. MANN -- ROBERT HAROLD 91, a resident of Albuquerque, died Friday, February 24, 2012. He is survived by daughters Barbara "Jeanne" Flores and husband, Paul; Ramona Mann and Pamela Trombetti all of Albuquerque, NM; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Lou. Robert served his country proudly during WWII for the United States Army under General Patton's leadership. He was a member of Grace Baptist Chapel. MCCORD -- CARLA LOU Loving wife and mother, died peacefully on February 19, 2012, in San Mateo, California. Carla, 81, was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, William A. METZ -- MAXINE D. Maxine died early Sunday, February 19, 2012, only three weeks before her eighty fifth birthday. She was born in 1927 in Texarkana, Texas, and moved to Albuquerque with her son, David, in 1946. Maxine had also lived in Los Alamos and was the Sandia Corporation Receptionist in Building 800 from 1955 to 1966. She was married to Elwood Metz who died in 1959 and to Claude Hempen, who died in 1996. Maxine is survived by her son, David Metz, daughter-in-law, Mary Metz, and also locally by nephew, Michael McCollum, and by several nieces and nephews in other states. MONTEVERDI -- FRANCIS J. Age 87 years old, passed away on February 22, 2012. Francis was born in Hollis, New York, on October 21, 1924 to Francis and Gertrude Monteverdi. He is survived by his wife of 30 years Ruth Monteverdi; son, Peter and his wife, Katherine; grandchildren, Andrew and Sarah; twin brother, John Monteverdi; nieces, Gina and husband, James Donaldson; Sheila and husband, Daniel Becker and nephews, John Monteverdi and wife, Lori; Frank Erik Monteverdi and wife, Ana, many grandnieces, grandnephews and many friends. As a 19 year old infantryman, he participated in the morning assault wave on Omaha Beach, Normandy on D-Day. He was taken prisoner four days later and sent to Meltheuer Prison Camp, where he spent 11 months. He was repatriated in May 1945. He received many medals for his bravery. Frank received his BA from University of New Mexico and his law degree from St. John's University in New York. He worked for the office of the District Attorney in New York City and later for various Federal Agencies. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1100 Indian School Road N.E., on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Patricia Holman officiating. There will be a brief reception after the service. He will be interred at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico at a later date. MUSCARELLA -- ROSE MARIE Age 98, a resident of Albuquerque, died on Thursday, February 23, 2012. She was born on February 3, 1914, in Buffalo, NY. She is survived by her sons, Vincent A. Muscarella MD; his children Vincent, Gregory and wife Kendra, Damian C. Muscarella and wife Anita; their children Jeffrey, Robert and wife Sylvia, and Gary D. Muscarella D.D.S. and wife Debra; their children Christina and husband Christopher, and David; and great grandchildren, Gandolph, Weston, and Luciana Rose Muscarella and Ryan Gooch. Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Gandolph Muscarella D.D.S.; parents Damiano and Crociffisa Jelsomino; brothers, Samuel, John, Joseph, Carl and her sister, Josephine. Rose and Gandolph were married on August 8, 1934, in Rochester, NY. They relocated to Albuquerque in 1959 where Gandolph practiced dentistry until 1971. Rose was a member of Church of the Risen Savior Catholic Community. She enjoyed years of nurturing her family with her Italian cooking. RANKIN -- MARY Our dearly beloved Mary, wife, mother, grandmother, and daughter, was suddenly taken away from us on Tuesday, February 21, 2012. REED -- THOMAS KENYON JR. Long term Santa Fe resident and successful businessman, Thomas K. Reed, Jr., passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, February 21, 2012, with his devoted wife of 34 years, Katherine Arnold Reed by his side. Tom was 80 years old. Born November 1, 1931 in Massillon, Ohio, to Dr. Thomas Kenyon Reed and Zana Marguerite Lange Reed, he attended the University of New Mexico, where Tom pledged Sigma Chi fraternity. He then enlisted in the US Army from 1953-1955 as a Top Security cryptographer for the commander-in-chief for the Caribbean, stationed in Panama. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1956 with a Liberal Arts Degree. Reed's first job was with the corporate giant, IBM. This was the beginning of Tom's developing his visionary, highly innovative business style. There he worked alongside prominent businessmen, Ross Perot and Aubrey Wilson. Following this venture, for the next three years, Reed joined Goodbody and Company, an investment management firm in Albuquerque, as a stockbroker. Always envisioning a higher, more innovative business strategy, Tom finally established his own investment business in 1964, specializing in start-up ventures. He honed his entrepreneurial mind during these influential years, and in 1975, moved to Hawaii, where he owned and operated two radio stations, which he later sold to the Coca-Cola Company of Los Angeles. A decisive and fearless investor, Tom founded the Reed Investment Company in 1978, simultaneously becoming a member of Lloyd's of London. Tom and Kathie moved to Santa Fe, where Reed continued to use his venture capital for other businesses: twenty-one in his lifetime. In the 80's, he founded and became President and CEO of Vivigen, Inc., devoting all of his energies to establishing it as the premier genetic testing laboratory in the world. Vivigen gained national prominence when Business Week magazine named the business one of the "The Best Small Growth Companies in America" in 1988 and 1989. His was the first corporation in New Mexico to offer childcare for its employees, and free tuition for anyone in the company wishing to further their education, in the medical/genetic field. In 1989, Reed was chosen as one of the "Ten Who Made a Difference", honored for making a significant contribution to Santa Fe and the community. Following the merger of Vivigen and Genzyme Genetics in October 1992, Reed devoted his time to management of his myriad business affairs. In 1993, he was appointed as one of the six members of the NASDAQ Listing Qualifications Committee. He loved his work and thrived on the challenges it brought him. Ever the generous philanthropist, Tom contributed to the Church of the Holy Faith, of which he was a long-time member, along with many arts and community organizations, including The Lensic Performing Arts Center, The United Way and Santa Fe Pro Musica. Tom suffered a stroke in 2006 while on holiday with friends, and unfortunately, this was followed by a series of other health issues and hospitalizations over the last six years. Tom is remembered by those who knew him as charming and funny, with a huge presence. He also possessed a gift for recognizing talent and ability, and was passionate about mentoring those who were deserving. His business style also shaped a man prone to impatience, as his brilliance often engendered ideas way ahead of their time. Reed is survived by his wife Kathie, and his two children: his daughter Lee, of Santa Fe, and his son Richard, of Albuquerque, both from his first marriage to Lynn Walton. He will be deeply missed by Kathie and his children, his grandson Austin, as well as many friends and business associates. Special thanks from the family to Eric Chambers, his caretaker, who was a devoted friend and companion to Tom until his death, to Mary Feidt his hospice nurse and to the staff of Ambercare. RYLANT -- WALTER FERRELL "FLIP" Age 81, born March 6, 1930 and a resident of Albuquerque since 1963, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 20, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Edith L. Rylant of Albuquerque; daughters, Betty Gordon and husband, Don of Albuquerque and Cathy Stone and husband, Charles of Albuquerque; sons, Pete Conklin and wife, Susan of Rio Rancho and Walter Rylant (Sonny) of Albuquerque; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Leatrel Smith, Sue Stone both of Cool Ridge, WV, and Doris Minard of Charleston, SC; brothers, Harry Dean Rylant of Cool Ridge, WV and Joe Rylant of Ghent, WV; 39 nieces and nephews; and many friends. Mr. Rylant was preceded in death by his parents, F.W. Rylant, Sr. and Elda Rylant of Cool Ridge, WV. Mr. Rylant has been a long time member of the Exalting Jesus Fellowship Church in Albuquerque. Walt Rylant was born in Warrior, AL, but was raised in Cool Ridge, WV. He was a son of a coal miner in the mountains of West Virginia where he was raised on cornbread and sweet milk. He graduated and was a star quarterback at Stoco High School in Coal City, WV, before joining the Navy in 1949 to 1954. In 1954 Walt joined the United States Air Force and retired in 1970 as TSGT after 20 years of honorable service. Dad loved Horse Racing, he was at the Downs track everyday, he loved the favorite horses but was not much with the long shots. Dad was a huge sports fan and loved all sports that included West Virginia or New Mexico Lobos. Dad was a quiet man, but when he spoke, make sure you listen. Walt Rylant was a loving husband to Edith his wife of 52 years and the best father a child could want. His grandchildren loved him dearly and they always brought a smile to his face. Dad loved the Lord with all his heart and enjoyed being a Christian. His sense of humor and strength will be greatly missed by all. SEARS -- FRANK SHELDON LT. COL. US ARMY RET. Passed away on February 17, 2012. He was a resident of Springfield, MO since 2009. He is survived by his daughter, Margaret Ann Grubb and husband Chris Grubb; two grandchildren, Catherine Ashley Grubb and Chase Sheldon Grubb of Springfield, MO.; as well as many relatives and friends on both sides of the family. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Lillian Margaret (Argabright) Sears; parents, Frank B. and Mary Ellen (Henry) Sears; one sister, Nellie Mae (Sears) Gray Wornham. He was born in Salem, VA on October 11, 1916. He attended Roanoke College, Salem, VA earning a bachelor's degree in Physics. After college he worked a year in an industrial supply company prior to being drafted in to the Army. He was assigned to the 1st Armored Division spending time in North Africa, French Morocco and Italy during World War II. Later he served in Japan, Germany, Hawaii and Vietnam. He worked in nuclear weapons design and development. His last assignment was chief of the Tactical and Air Defense Weapons Branch of Field Command at Sandia Base, Albuquerque, NM. He retired after 27 years of service in the United States Army. He was a member of the VFW Post 49 and Post 99, The Elks Lodge, Master Mason of Camp Knox, KY Lodge 919 and also served 32 years on the Board of Directors of Sandia Area Federal Credit Union. SHAYKIN -- JEROME DAVID Was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 28, 1917, and passed away in Albuquerque, New Mexico on January 31, 2012. He was the second of four sons of Hyman and Fannie, Russian Jewish immigrants who came to America in 1910. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers; and his wife of 53 years, Eleanor. He is survived by his son David; daughter Nanci Beckes and her husband Jerry; many nieces and nephews; and the Beckes/Talcott family. Jerome graduated from the University of Illinois in 1942 where he majored in bacteriology and chemistry. He did post graduate studies in the sanitary sciences, stream pollution control, and the treatment of sewage and industrial wastes at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He worked for the U.S. Public Health Service doing malaria mosquito control in the industrial areas of central Illinois. He also worked as a chemist/bacteriologist for the Sanitary District of Chicago. He was employed by the Armour Laboratories as a manufacturer of pharmaceuticals from animal glands, and he also helped Armour conform to the Food and Drug Administration and its plant sanitation requirements. In 1948, he and his wife Eleanor and daughter Nanci moved from Chicago to Los Alamos where he accepted a position with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission as a sanitary chemist/bacteriologist where he helped to develop methods for the removal of radionuclides from liquid waste streams. His son David was born in Los Alamos six months afterwards. At Los Alamos, he also engaged in Public Health and Environmental Sanitation for the city and county. He served as an environmental health advisor to the Santa Fe District Health Officer and supervised the Boy Scouts in the area who chose to earn a public health merit badge. In 1965, the Atomic Energy Commission transferred him to Albuquerque Operations Headquarters where he served as an environmental health, sanitation and industrial hygiene advisor to its twelve contractor operated offices in the continental United States. He used a collegial approach in the resolution of industrial health and sanitation problems and he was well respected and held in high regard by the AEC, contractors, and his fellow workers in the Operational Safety Division. During his thirty two years of employment with the AEC, he received three promotions and was rewarded with two superior performance awards. He was president of the Los Alamos Lodge of B'nai B'rith and a member its District Grand Lodge, president of the Los Alamos Jewish Center of which he was a founding father, a member of the U.S. Public Health Association, New Mexico Public Health Association, and a member of the American and Illinois Societies for Bacteriology, Radiological Health Association, and the American Sewage Works Association. He had a few close friends, many acquaintances, and no known enemies. One of the biggest disappointments of his life was that he was classified 4F and unable to serve his country during WWII due to a childhood injury. After his retirement, he tried, without success, to improve his golf game. He loved his country, his family, his friends, dogs, and a good joke. He hopes to be remembered as a compassionate human being and a patriot who had faith in the concepts of American democracy despite the partisanship of its elected officials. He requested that no memorial service be held, and cremation has taken place. This summer, his remains will be spread in the same places where his wife was scattered seventeen years ago. He will be sorely missed by his loved ones who feel that he was a loving and kind, gentle man.

UNGEMACH -- KATHERINE As a song once said, it is not how you start, but how you finish, yet a solid start surely helps assure a brighter future. Nowadays, it is not uncommon for us to focus on setting children up to win. In the early 1920's, in contrast, four children found themselves homeless when their father's wanderlust resulted in his leaving the family, and their mother found herself fighting the battle of overwhelming depression. Katherine Ungemach was second oldest of those four children. Born on November 15th of 1915 in Hillsdale, NJ, Katherine came from a strong German heritage, with a large family of proud printers in Lower Manhattan on her father's side, and a tradition of strong women on her mother's side. Katherine's great-grandmother ran a New York boarding house that catered to the workers who built the monumental, and groundbreaking, Brooklyn Bridge; Katherine's grandmother and her three sisters grew up with a strong work ethic, helping their mother in running that boarding house. It was one of Katherine's grandmother's sisters, Tante Katie, who, in her 60's, took in little Katherine, her sisters, and her brother. Taking on that new responsibility (with one child being just a toddler), was a bit much for Tante Katie, who lost her husband just a year later, so an active little Katherine was sent off to live with two maiden aunts, who were known to be more than a bit strict. Katherine later returned to her siblings and her Tante Katie. Young Katherine was known to be a bit introverted and bookish, a good student, yet she was also known to have a strong sense of self, and, even more, a strong sense of faith. Such a deep seeded faith might seem impossible for others with such a rocky and uncertain start, and many might suffer from a persistent lack of confidence, or worse. Katherine, however, inspired others in their own faith; a younger neighbor gives Katherine and her sister Ruth credit for her own strong, lifelong, Catholic faith, and Katherine is remembered as having walked up the long hill to their church for Missions and other special services time and time again. Katherine pursued life as a nun, but every religious order denied her, as her parents had not been married in the Church. Katherine persevered, and did manage to join two different convents, where she lived during the war years; in one, attached to an orphanage, she tended the hen house. She moved on to a career as an accountant in New York City, and then Massachusetts, where she lived in Swansea and was a valued employee of Lever Brothers. During those years, she was known for her handling of German Shepherds, and she adored and cherished her two Shepherds: Tammy and Sentry. Katherine would delight her nieces and nephews with her stories of traveling the world, including Rome, Greece, and Egypt, where she even rode a camel. In 1976, Katherine moved in with her sister Ruth in Park Ridge, NJ, and she worked at the corporate headquarters of A&P until her retirement in the late 1980's, when Katherine and Ruth then moved to New Mexico. Katherine is remembered for her kindness to others (including visits to the poor, elderly and the homebound), her always remembering the birthdays of family and friends, and her generous donations to countless Catholic organizations and seminaries, veterans organizations, missionaries and Southwest Indian foundations. She was a member of the Franciscans and the Marianites in New Mexico, and she inspired many good works throughout her life. Her life savings have been left to her favorite charities. She firmly stood against injustice, and, while she would not preach, she set an example of love and compassion. Only last year, Katherine lost her beloved rescued cat, Whiskers, after twelve years together; she had been determined to outlive him so that he would not be alone. Katherine was predeceased by her older sister, Marie Ungemach Mackey, her brother, Everett J. Ungemach, and a niece, Cecelia Mackey Mandarano. Katherine is survived by her younger sister, Ruth Ungemach Kirk, fourteen nieces and nephews, and countless great nieces and great nephews. Friends may visit French Mortuary on Lomas on Wednesday, February 29th at 3pm for the Rosary. Mass will be held at Annunciation Church at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 1st. WESTON -- MARIA R. Maria del Rosario Weston, 88, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, died peacefully on February 17, 2012. She was born on July 23, 1923 in Guadalajara, Mexico, the daughter of Francisco Camarena and Maria del Rosario Lima. She was the middle child of five siblings. On April 19, 1949, she married Robert Bruce Weston, who preceded her in death on June 22, 2005. Maria was working as an office receptionist and swimming with an Olympic caliber team when she met Bruce in Mexico City following World War II. Bruce fell instantly in love with the Mexican culture and with the lovely Maria. Following a formally beautiful wedding, the couple stayed in Mexico City for three years. They moved to San Francisco and San Mateo where Maria learned to speak excellent English and worked before they settled in San Diego for eighteen years. Bruce worked for the Port of San Diego and in other international commerce. In the seventies, the couple moved to Mexico City for seven years, with son Dan Weston. Maria and Bruce wrote articles for the American Port Association and traveled in Latin America. In the late seventies, they moved to Los Angeles. Maria continued to work for the American Port Association and sold imported ceramic flowers. In the early 1990's Bruce and Maria moved to Albuquerque to be near family. Maria was proud of her family, her heritage, her work and her personal fortitude. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Shann Cathro Weston and Steve Porten of Friday Harbor, WA; son and daughter-in-law, Daniel Edwin Weston and Julie Weston of Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren, Mariya Porten of Lake Tahoe, CA, Elena Porten of Seattle, Robin and Jason Weston of Albuquerque. Maria's ashes will be placed with her husband's in Friday Harbor, WA.
