ALARID -- TONY L. Age 97, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on January 10, 2012, at home with his loving family at his side. ARAGON -- CHARLES Age 70, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, NM was called to heaven on January 8, 2012, with his family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife Josephine; sons Charles and wife Lori, Paul and wife Mona Lisa; daughter Jeanette McNeely and husband James; grandchildren Amanda, Nicole, Amber, Carlos, Erica, Ryan, J.J., Jacob, Martin, Jordan, and Kaylee; and many nieces, nephews, friends, and family. After serving his Country in the US Army for 20 years and working for the City of Albuquerque for 25 years, he retired. He worked hard, loved life, and will be missed by all. BLACKWOOD -- ADAM JOHN Was born on August 31, 2011. He passed away on January 8, 2012. Adam was such a happy baby, and he was loved by everyone who met him. He is missed greatly. Adam liked to bounce, and play with his little stuffed animal friends (which every one he put in his mouth). He loved to watch television with his family and he loved to look around and know everything that was going on. Adam loved to eat his sweet potatoes. Adam also loved to stand up on your legs and pretend that he could run. Every opportunity he got he would try to grab your face. BOGDAN -- GREGORY ANTHONY SR. Age 54, of Los Lunas, NM passed away on January 7, 2012. He was born on March 19, 1957 to Alexander and Mary Bogdan. Gregory volunteered his time at the Senior Center of Los Lunas. He was a big man with a big heart; he loved all types of music, fishing, BBQ's and spending time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son Greg Bogdan. He is survived by his wife Brenda of 37 years. CASTELL -- HOWARD Age 82, died Monday, January 9, 2012. Howard was preceded in death by his son, William Richard Castell, parents John S. and Dora Castell, and brother John S. Castell. He is survived by his daughter, Jeanne E. Bailey of Pleasant Plains, AR; sons, Robert S. Castell and wife, Alice of Albuquerque, NM; James Micheal Castell and family of Dallas, TX; John Howard Castell and family of Ottowa, OH; and Bill Duffy and family. Mr. Castell was blessed and loved by his companion and shared his life with Mrs. Patricia Manetti and family of Albuquerque. EELLS -- SHARON E. Age 72, died peacefully at her home Sunday January 8th, 2012. She was the wife of Larry Eells, the love of her life and devoted husband. During her retirement she enjoyed cooking reading, was an accomplished pianist and loved each of her special dogs. GATES -- LILLIE L. Age 92, went home to God on January 6, 2012. She was born in Schenectady, New York on June 20, 1919 and had lived in Albuquerque since 1967. As a young woman, Lillie worked at General Electric where she met her future husband, Albert Gates. They were married for 59 years. She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, Barry. Lillie Gates is survived by six other children, Joyce Grubbs of Ruskin, Fl., Bettie Moss and her husband David of Corona, NM, Richard Gates and his wife, Janet of Las Vegas, NV, Sherrie Simek and her husband, Rudy of Albuquerque, NM, Terrie Gruen and her husband, Mitch of Edgewood, NM, and Jeri Garcia and her husband, Mario of Albuquerque, NM. Lillie is also survived by six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. HOOD -- JAMES W. Age 88, passed away January 7, 2012. He was born May 23, 1923 in Junction City, Kansas to Ruth L. Hood and Roy J. Hood and lived in Albuquerque since 1992. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Blanche Hood; children, Linda Hopkins, James Hood and his wife Jacqueline; grandson Scott Hopkins and wife Jessica; granddaughter, Elizabeth Hood; brothers, Paul Hood and Charlie Hood and wife Elsie; brothers-in-law Wayne Dowdell and wife Marcie, and Donald Dowdall and wife Connie; many nieces, nephews and loving friends. He was a World War II Army Veteran and earned a Bronze Star. He worked for the United States Post Office for thirty six years. LUJAN -- BETTY JO (BACA) Age 58, Loving wife, mom, grandma, daughter and sister went home to be with our lord and Savior on January 8, 2012. Betty was born to proud parents Ben and Mable Baca on March 19, 1953 in Albuquerque, NM. Betty worked for Walmart for many years where she made lots of good friends. In her free time she loved to bake and spend time with her grandkids. Betty is survived by husband Art Lujan and mother-in-law Lucille. Her Dad Ben Baca and companion Carrie Casaus, Mother Mable Baca and companion Pete Pieric, Sons Ronnie Pedersen and companion Lynda, Danny Pederson and companion and Derek Abeyta and wife Sasha. Grandchildren Little Ronnie, Chrystal, Chris, Zoie, Melody, Luciono, CJ, and Brenda. Three sisters Janet, Carol and Rhonda, one brother Randy. MARTINEZ -- MARK JOSEPH Born November 9, 1978, went to be with the Lord on January 8, 2012 after a sudden illness. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mary Jane Santillanes 2011; uncle, VJ, 2010, great-grandmother, Quirina Martinez, 2002; uncle, Luis, 2000; great-grandfather, Cresciano Martinez, 1984. He is survived by his loving mother, Delma D. Martinez (Rey Dour); his father, Rudy Duran; by his loving wife, Athena Martinez; also his only son, Joeseph I. Martinez and his step-son, Bubba (Adam); his in-laws, Ed and Renee Chaffee; his grandmother, Eslinda Duran; and many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. Mark was loved by so many people. He had many friends who love him and are going to miss him deeply. Services are pending.

MCABEE -- KAY ARTHUR Was born in Joliet, Illinois on Nov. 17, 1930 and passed away Jan. 8th after a month-long illness. He had been a resident of Albuquerque since 1986. Kay started his professional career as staff organist for the W.W. Kimball Company in 1952. After completing his musical education at the Chicago Musical College and the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, he went on to become a featured soloist in at least five national conventions for the American Theater Organ Society (ATOS), and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1985. He was a pioneer in the theater organ world and well remembered for the series of concerts he performed at the Rialto Theater in Joliet, Illinois and the Aurora Paramount in Aurora, Illinois, and more recently at the Phil Maloof Roxy Organ at the Albuquerque Ramada Classic, Fred Hermes residence organ in Racine, Wisconsin and concert series for the St. Louis Theater Organ Society. Kay taught up to fifty students per week in Joliet for years at the World of Music. Kay was a member of the American Guild of Organists for 50 years, choir master and organist at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Frankfort, Illinois for 23 years and most recently, organist for Covenant United Methodist Church. Survived by his adopted family friend, Tony Horvat; niece Ellen Schroll; nephew Ted Dimmick; and brother-in-law, Charles Dimmick. Preceded in death by his parents, George S. McAbee and Edith Barbee McAbee and sister, Rosamary Dimmick. A Memorial service is planned for Saturday, Jan. 14th at 2 p.m. at the Covenant United Methodist Church. MONDRAGON -- JOHN B. A longtime resident of Albuquerque died Tuesday, January 10, 2012. He is survived by his son, Thomas J. Mondragon of West Hollywood, California; daughter, Tina Johnston and her husband, Timothy Johnston of Abilene, Texas; and grandchildren, Brian and Beth Johnston. As the patriarch of the family he is also survived by nephews and nieces, Silverio, Louis, and Abel Paez, Mae Terry, Ishmael and Renee Mondragon, Adela Mondragon, Tony Cordova; sister-in-law, Crystal Mondragon; and many grand-nephews and nieces. He was born in Holman, New Mexico on September 11, 1930. He served in the Army in 1950-53. He earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico and continued his education, earning his Doctorate in Secondary Education at University of New Mexico. John will be remembered and missed by many due to his distinguished service to the education community and to New Mexico's children and families. He helped shape the careers of hundreds of educators and served as mentor and advisor to many prominent New Mexico educational leaders. He freely shared his historical insights and political perspectives that helped shape the educational policies of today. He never entertained the thought of retiring but rather continued to contribute by teaching Educational Leadership Classes at the University of New Mexico and Highlands University. He was a much sought after educational consultant both in New Mexico and nationally. All of the recognitions and honors he received are too numerous to capture here. Most noteworthy was his induction in to the New Mexico Coalition of School Administrators Hall of Fame, election as President of the CNM Governing Board on which he served for six years. He was elected to the Association of Community College Trustees Board and appointed to the Western Region Diversity Committee. He was a valued member of the New Mexico Public Schools Capital Outlay Council. He helped found the New Mexico MESA which supports minority students to pursue their studies in engineering, math and science. He was a strong supporter of the National Hispanic Cultural Center and strongly advocated for Bilingual Education, The Indian Education Act, and the historic Hispanic Education Act. Until his last days he remained a student and a scholar continuing his research and writing. At the time of his death he was collaborating on a book on the Policies of Educational Reform in New Mexico and he had begun writing his memoir which his colleagues are committed to finish. MOORE -- KATHRYN age 88, a lifetime resident of New Mexico, died Monday, January 9, 2012. She is survived by her son, Thurman William Moore III of Albuquerque, NM; daughter, Pamela Ann Roberts and husband, Gary of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter, Dona Marie Seis and husband, Kent of Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren Jason Shiparski and wife, Amber of Colorado Springs, CO, Matthew Shiparski of Colorado Springs, CO, Kirbie Kathryn Seis of Long Beach, CA and Travis Collin Seis of Albuquerque, NM; great-grandchildren Hayley and Katelynn Shiparski of Colorado Springs, CO. Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman W. Moore and son, Richard Gregory Moore. Mrs. Moore was proud of her family's New Mexico heritage, tracing it back to Fort Union in the 1860's. She attended St. Vincent's Academy for Girls and St. Mary's Catholic School in Albuquerque, the Loretto Academy in Santa Fe and graduated from Santa Fe High School. Her first job was with the Santa Fe Civil Service Recruiting and Induction Center during World War II where she met her husband to be. They married in 1942 and remained married until his death in 1989. In her professional life, Mrs. Moore worked at Sandia National Laboratories for 15 years. In 1986, she became manager of the St. Joseph Healthcare Systems' three gift shops. She remained in that position until her retirement in 2006 at the age of 82. Mrs. Moore was involved as a volunteer with the St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary for over 30 years, serving as its President for two consecutive terms beginning in 1981. She became President of the New Mexico Hospital Association Auxiliary Service in 1999. In recognition of her extensive volunteer work, in 2004 she was inducted into the Silver Horizons New Mexico Senior Hall of Fame. Mrs. Moore was an Associate of the Sisters of Charity. A rosary will be recited Friday, January 13, 2012 at 7:00 pm at French - University Chapel. OTTENI -- MARGARET MARIE Passed from this life Tuesday, January 10, 2012, after a short illness. She was born September 3, 1919, in Pittsburgh, PA, to Charles and Margaret Mechenbier, the fourth child in a family of ten children. On April 8, 1942, she married the love of her life, Leo Otteni. He preceded her in death September 28, 2006. They moved to Albuquerque, NM, in 1948 where they raised their five children. They remained active at Our Lady of Fatima Church their entire lives. Margaret was always proud of her husband and his accomplishments, but we know in our hearts that behind that successful man was a strong, intelligent, persevering wife. Margaret loved a good time, golf, bridge, and a bargain. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Joan and Frank Nordstrum, Lee and Diana Otteni, Ken and Tina Otteni, Mary Jane and John Hall, Elaine and Ed Cebula, her grandchildren: Lisa Sheppard, Chris Nordstrum, Becky Otteni, Carol Vencill, and her great grandchildren: Emma and Leo Sheppard, Myles Nordstrum, Tyler, Leah, Bryant, and Emily Vencill, her brothers: Norbert and Bernard Mechenbier and her sisters: Mercedes Ray and Vera Mae Gardiner. Margaret resided just over three years at Atria Vista Del Rio where she served as an ambassador and also became a vibrant member of that retirement community. The family thanks all the employees of Atria for their tender and kind care always provided to Margaret. Rosary will be recited at Our Lady of Fatima Church at 7:00 PM. Thursday, January 12th. RAMSEY -- PHILLIP (JOHN) RICHARD Born October 17, 1963 in Ankara, Turkey passed away peacefully at home Sunday, January 8th, 2012. John was preceded in death by his father Ernie Ramsey; sister Patricia Ramsey; and stepson Michael L. Zamora. John is survived by his wife and the love of his life, Bonnie Ramsey. They met in 1991, fell madly in love, and were married in 1992. Never leaving each others side, John and Bonnie were soul mates and best friends. John is survived by his mother Eileen Ramsey, Arkansas; son John Paul Ramsey and fiancee Jenny King, Albuq; grandson Michael C. Zamora, Albuq; brother Ernie and Anna Marie Ramsey, WA, brother Joe and Jan Ramsey, NC; sister Cathy and Danny Grasley, NC and brother Kenny. Also, Mr. Lambert Jaramillo, a very special friend close to John's heart. John's greatest enjoyments in life were his family, riding his Harley, and participating in sports with his grandson Michael. RUSSELL -- BILLIE L. SPONSELLER Age 87, former resident, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Landsun Health Service Center in Carlsbad, NM. There will be no visitation, cremation will take place and private family services will be held. Denton-Wood Funeral Home, 1001 N. Canal Street, Carlsbad, NM 88220, is in charge of the arrangements. Billie L. Sponseller Russell was born July 31, 1924 in Akron, Ohio to William Hugh and Lula Estelle (Robuck) Gragg. Billie grew up in Ohio, attending school and married Adin Sponseller. She was a homemaker and mother of four children. Her husband was in the US Navy when the family moved to Albuquerque. Billie was a supervisor at Mountain Bell Phone Company for 15 years. She also was President of NM AFL-CIO in the late 1950's; president of Communications Workers of American, Local 8611 and a member of the Quilters Guild. When Mr. Sponseller was transferred to California, the family relocated and Billie became a bookkeeper for various automobile agencies. She married Buck Russell on March 6, 1976 in Westminster, California. They retired in 1980 and together they traveled in their RV, settling in Elephant Butte, NM. Billie enjoyed being "a Pink Lady" at the hospital in Elephant Butte. Following her husband's passing, Billie moved to Carlsbad in 2004 where she continued to live independently in her own home. Her hobbies included her pet dog, Snoopy, The Quilters Guild and being a member of La Huerta Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Buck Russell and one grandchild. Survivors are four children: Sally Garner and husband, Jim of Carlsbad, NM, Terry Myrick of Edgewood, NM, Adin Sponseller and wife, Kathy of Placitas, NM; Connie Fish and husband, Roy of Seguim, Washington and numerous grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. STEARNS -- PHYLLIS ESKEW Peacefully went to see her Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 7, 2012. She is survived by her beloved husband, Wilbur; her sons, Mike Eskew (and wife Patricia), Jim Eskew (and wife Sydnie); three grandchildren, Ashley Hatley, Nikki Brown and Kelly Eskew; two great-grandchildren, Jasmine Celeste Hatley and Viviana Maurine Brown; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was loved and respected by Wilbur's parents, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Martha Heigh of Vancouver, Washington, and her first husband, Gerald Eskew of Oregon. Preceding her in death were her parents, Thelma and Glenn Hazelhurst. Phyllis was born on June 30, 1938 in Eugene, Oregon. She attended Oregon State University, the University of Oregon, and later graduated from the University of Albuquerque. She came to Albuquerque in 1959 with her first husband. She was a devoted mother and foster mother, and known as "Mrs. E." to her sons' numerous friends. Phyllis loved people and had a very active social conscience. She was a church secretary and enjoyed a long career as a legal secretary. In 1972, she became the charter President of the Albuquerque Legal Secretaries Association and was honored as Legal Secretary of the Year. She held numerous positions at both the state and national level. She was a certified Professional Legal Secretary and Certified Legal Assistant. She also loved teaching and taught classes at T-VI (now CNM). Despite her diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis in the 1970's and her increasing lack of mobility, Phyllis never used it as an excuse to do anything other than enjoy life to the fullest. She was active in her church and created many special friendships at Calvary Chapel East Mountain, First Christian Church in Albuquerque and Bible Study Fellowship. She was a very active grandmother taking her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to movies, museums, and creating special memories for them. She met and married Wilbur Stearns and they had 23 blissful years together spent in travel, bird-watching and special conversations with friends and family on their Edgewood veranda. A Memorial service with buffet lunch will be held at Embassy Suites Hotel, 1000 Woodward Place NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Saturday, January 21, 2012, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, in the Sandia Ballroom IV-V.
