ALEXANDER -- BENJAMIN BATES Was welcomed into this world on October 31, 1920 in Guymon Oklahoma, by his mother and father, Emma Mable Bates Alexander and Omer Virgil Alexander and nine brothers and sisters: Truda, Vernon, Vera, Josh, Omer, Alma, Mary, Joe and Rachel. He passed on in his sleep last Saturday morning January 7, 2012, while residing in Lubbock, Texas at age 91. His mother and father homesteaded in Guymon, Oklahoma. When Ben was seven years old his family moved to Lubbock, Texas where they started a grocery business in Shallowater and then onto Eunice, New Mexico where Ben worked in the summers. He spent one semester attending Texas Tech University before WWII called his family into service. Upon returning from the Army in 1944 Ben assumed the ownership of the grocery store. He expanded the stores to Seminole, Jal and Hobbs. In 1952 Ben founded DA&S Oil Well Servicing, Inc, which he said many times gave him the means to provide better opportunities for his employees. The success of that business became the vehicle for him to focus his un-bounding energy and resources on civic endeavors he felt passionate about. Ben's varied business interests though out his life expanded to real estate, ranching and oil & gas production. Ben married the love of his life, Gerry Ann on May 22, 1942. The couple had two children, Lee Ann and Russell Bates. Ben and Gerry raised their family and lived in Lea County until moving into Carillon's Windsong Senior Living campus in Lubbock in 2001. Ben is survived by an adoring and proud family. His daughter and son-in-law, Lee Ann and Beach Snyder; six grandchildren: Michelle, Atlee, Hillary, Kynda, Hollie and Kaelyn; nine great-grand children ranging in age from 15 years to 7 months: Cheaney, Annika, Sam, Halle, Sydnee, Paislee Ann, Dean IV, Leah and baby Ben. In leaving behind a very large and extended family of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, Ben, as the last of the original Alexander siblings, passes on the enduring heritage of the Alexander lineage. Ben was preceded in death by his parents; his nine brothers and sisters; his son Rusty, and his wife of 69 years, Gerry Ann. A few of Ben's accomplishments are: *2007 Texas Tech Department of Athletics Hall of Legacy Inductee; *2003Petroleum Hall of Fame Inductee; *2000 Person of the Century, presented Hobbs News-Sun; *1999 Lea County Fair and Rodeo dedicated to Ben; *1996 Ben Alexander Student Center established at New Mexico Junior College, *1988 Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree, presented by College of the Southwest; *1983 Democratic Distinguished Service Award, presented at national Democratic Gala; *1982 Top Hand Award, presented by Permian Basin Petroleum Association; *1980 Trustee of Free Enterprise, presented by College of the Southwest; *1971 Hobbs Citizen of the Year, presented by Hobbs Board of Realtors; *1967 Outstanding Citizen of Hobbs, presented by Hobbs Jaycees Ben's service highlights past and current included: United States Army (1942-1944); Politics: New Mexico Democratic chairman; Democratic national committeeman for New Mexico; Director, Business Council of the Democratic National Committee; State campaign chairman for former President Jimmy Carter; State campaign chairman for former Governor Jerry Apodaca; Board member, Hobbs Chamber of Commerce; Board member, Hobbs Industrial Park; Board member, Independent Petroleum Association of America; Board member, Independent Petroleum Association of America; Board member, New Mexicans for Jobs and Energy; Board member, NMJC Foundation; Board of trustees, CSW for 25 years; Chairman of steering committee creating New Mexico Junior College District; Chairman, New Mexico Oil and Gas Association (including public affairs committee); Chairman, New Mexico Workers' Compensation Advisory Council; Charter member, New Mexico Amigos; Founder and first campaign chairman, Greater Hobbs United Fund; Member, National Petroleum Council; Member, New Mexico Association of Commerce and Industry; Member, New Mexico Investment Council; National board member, Association of Oil Well Servicing Contractors; Vice president, Permian Basin Petroleum Association. CANTRELL -- ZELL COL USAF (RET) Age 71, a resident of Las Cruces, NM, died January 7, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Christine Cantrell of Las Cruces; two children, son Zell Orden Cantrell III and wife, Lesley of Denver, CO, and daughter Kimberly Cantrell of Vashon, WA, and their mother, Linda Brunetti of Boise, ID; grandchildren, Claire and Sydney Cantrell; sisters, Margaret Cantrell of Redding, CA, and Mary Cantrell of Woodland, CA; mother-in-law, Agnes Sanchez of Las Cruces; brothers and sisters-in-law, Albert and Christine Sanchez of Las Cruces, Patrick and Mary Sanchez, of Las Cruces, Robert Sanchez of El Paso, TX, and Josie Sanchez of Las Cruces, and Lawrence and Lisa Sanchez of Grants, NM; and numerous nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces. Colonel Cantrell was preceded in death by his parents, Zell and Margaret Cantrell; and wife Sue Cantrell of Portland, OR. He was born in 1940 in San Francisco, CA. In 1958 he graduated from Woodland High School with honors in Woodland, CA. Colonel Cantrell was awarded a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from University of California, Berkley, Class of 1963. He continued his higher education studies and obtained a Master's in Operations Management from Auburn University, a Master's in Logistics Management from Wright State University, and he conducted post graduate work at the University of Houston. Colonel Cantrell had a meritorious 26 year career in the United States Air Force, from 1963-1989. He completed his Air Force flight training at Enid Air Force Base, Enid, OK. Colonel Cantrell flew over 3300 flight hours, including 2200 hours as an F-4 fighter pilot. During the Vietnam (War) Colonel Cantrell flew 263 combat missions. He had various Air Force assignments and over the course of his career was assigned to Air Force Bases in the US and abroad including: Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, NM, Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany, Cam Ranh Bay Air Base in Vietnam, Udorn Royal Thai Air Base in Thailand, Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, NM, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. Colonel Cantrell also had a four year tour at the Air Staff at the Pentagon in Washington, DC from 1982-1986. Colonel Cantrell received numerous medals including the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medals, Air Force Commendation Medal, and Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor Device, Combat Readiness Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Expeditionary Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze service stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and other ribbons of distinction. In 2010 Colonel Cantrell participated in the Veterans History Project and provided an oral history interview which is now catalogued in the Library of Congress as part of the American Folklife Center. The interview can be accessed online at: http://www.loc.gov/folklife/vets and contains Colonel Cantrell's recollections of his years of military service. After retirement, Colonel Cantrell did occasional contract work and volunteer work for AARP in Albuquerque, NM and Las Cruces, NM. In 1998 Colonel Cantrell met and married Christine and moved to Las Cruces, NM. He and his wife Christine enjoyed many years studying history and traveling to favorite historical spots in the Southwest, the United States and abroad. They particularly enjoyed traveling to visit family and to attend reunions with the 49th Fighter Group and 65-D Flight Group. Colonel Cantrell participated in the Military Officers Association, and the Dandelions Military Pilots Association. Colonel Cantrell's family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the doctors and nurses who cared for him during this last year. Visitation for Colonel Cantrell will begin at 1:00 PM on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at Baca's Chapel of Prayer, 300 E. Boutz Road, where the Funeral Service is scheduled for 2:00 PM with Military Honors. Inurnment of cremains will take place at a later date in a separate and private service at the Sanchez family plot in Santa Rosa, NM.

GATES -- LILLIE L. Age 92, went home to God on January 6, 2012. She was born in Schenectady, New York on June 20, 1919 and had lived in Albuquerque since 1967. As a young woman, Lillie worked at General Electric where she met her future husband, Albert Gates. They were married for 59 years. She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, Barry. Lillie Gates is survived by six other children, Joyce Grubbs of Ruskin, Fl., Bettie Moss and her husband David of Corona, NM, Richard Gates and his wife, Janet of Las Vegas, NV, Sherrie Simek and her husband, Rudy of Albuquerque, NM, Terrie Gruen and her husband, Mitch of Edgewood, NM, and Jeri Garcia and her husband, Mario of Albuquerque, NM. Lillie is also survived by six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. MAZZARELLA -- ROBERTA MONTOYA Age 58, passed in her sleep on January 6, 2012. Born in Valley Stream, NY, Roberta spent her childhood in Somerville, NJ before spending most of her life in Rio Rancho, NM. In addition to being a loving mother and grandmother, Roberta was never too busy to be there for her friends and family. She had a long, distinguished career as a travel agent with Rio Grande Travel, Pavlus Travel, and Liberty West Travel before retiring. Lately, she spent a great deal of her time with friends at The Greens Condominiums or her beloved grandchildren, Isaiah, Evan, and Bryana Montoya, who affectionately called her, "Noni." Roberta was preceded in death by her mother and step-father, Thelma and Irving Wengrofsky, and her father, Hy Levine. She is survived by her sisters and their husbands, Esta and Jim Fowler; Marcy and Cornelio Trujillo; her brother and his wife, Barry and Margie Levine; her son and daughter-in-law Ryan and Val Montoya, and their children Isaiah, Evan, and Bryana; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews and their children. RAMSEY -- PHILLIP (JOHN) RICHARD Born October 17, 1963 in Ankara, Turkey passed away peacefully at home Sunday, January 8th, 2012. John was preceded in death by his father Ernie Ramsey; sister Patricia Ramsey; and stepson Michael L. Zamora. John is survived by his wife and the love of his life, Bonnie Ramsey. They met in 1991, fell madly in love, and were married in 1992. Never leaving each others side, John and Bonnie were soul mates and best friends. John is survived by his mother Eileen Ramsey, Arkansas; son John Paul Ramsey and fiancee Jenny King, Albuq; grandson Michael C. Zamora, Albuq; brother Ernie and Anna Marie Ramsey, WA, brother Joe and Jan Ramsey, NC; sister Cathy and Danny Grasley, NC and brother Kenny. Also, Mr. Lambert Jaramillo, a very special friend close to John's heart. John's greatest enjoyments in life were his family, riding his Harley, and participating in sports with his grandson Michael. ROGERS -- BETTY Age 88, resident of Albuquerque since 1961, went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, January 8, 2012. Betty is survived by her children, Linda Chionchio (Guy), Gayle Bryant (Butch) and Dennis Rogers (Rita); grandchildren, Guy Chionchio III, Richard Chionchio, Scott Chionchio, David Ussery, Michelle Cruz, Brady Bryant, April Hoffman and Randall Rogers; 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Jerry Hackley (Judy); and many other relatives and friends. Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Archie; sister, Janet Hirz; and parents, George and Helen Hackley. She was born in Woodsfield, OH on December 27, 1923. Betty retired from Montgomery Ward and became an active line dancer and instructor at Palo Duro Senior Center. She was a member of Young at Heart Choir and Hoffmantown Church. She enjoyed singing and traveling with the choir. Betty was a loving mother and grandmother and will be extremely missed. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at French - Wyoming Chapel. SHARP -- FLOYD ELMER JR. A long-time resident of Albuquerque passed away after a short illness on December 2, 2011. He was a veteran who served in the U. S. Army and Air Force in India, China, and Germany. Upon separation from the military service, he transitioned to Federal civilian employment, working in the civilian personnel field in Germany, France, Nevada, California and Japan. He was assigned to the Air Force Contract Management Division (AFCMD), Los Angeles Air Force Station in 1970, transferring with the organizational move to Albuquerque in 1972. He then served as the Director of Personnel and subsequently the Special Assistant to the AFCMD Commander until his retirement in 1985. He was born in Fullerton, CA to Myrtle Hart Sharp and Floyd Sharp, Sr. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Irene Sharp; son, Kevin Sharp of Menlo Park, CA; son and daughter-in-law, Ryan and Danielle Sharp and grandchildren, London and Alexandra Sharp of Davis, CA; sister, Evelyn Leck, of Davis, CA; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Patsy Holmes, and his brother, Cecil Sharp. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and special friend, who will be dearly missed. SLOCUM -- RODNEY T. Age 70, was born in Littleton, CO and became a resident of Albuquerque, NM in l969. Rod passed away peacefully at home on Monday, January 2, 2012. He is survived by his wife Claudia of 49 years; daughter Jessica Slocum; son Kyle Slocum; and grandson Douglas Echols. His sister Debora Bodkin resides in Riverside, CA with her daughter's family. Over the years, Rod enjoyed distinguished and diversified careers in law enforcement: Police Officer, Postal Inspector, and Juvenile Probation/Parole Officer. He was also a master and professionalwood carver, carpenter, and finish carpenter. His favorite pass times were fly fishing and hiking the mountains. STEARNS -- PHYLLIS ESKEW Peacefully went to see her Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 7, 2012. She is survived by her beloved husband, Wilbur; her sons, Mike Eskew (and wife Patricia), Jim Eskew (and wife Sydnie); three grandchildren, Ashley Hatley, Nikki Brown and Kelly Eskew; two great-grandchildren, Jasmine Celeste Hatley and Viviana Maurine Brown; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was loved and respected by Wilbur's parents, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Martha Heigh of Vancouver, Washington, and her first husband, Gerald Eskew of Oregon. Preceding her in death were her parents, Thelma and Glenn Hazelhurst. Phyllis was born on June 30, 1938 in Eugene, Oregon. She attended Oregon State University, the University of Oregon, and later graduated from the University of Albuquerque. She came to Albuquerque in 1959 with her first husband. She was a devoted mother and foster mother, and known as "Mrs. E." to her sons' numerous friends. Phyllis loved people and had a very active social conscience. She was a church secretary and enjoyed a long career as a legal secretary. In 1972, she became the charter President of the Albuquerque Legal Secretaries Association and was honored as Legal Secretary of the Year. She held numerous positions at both the state and national level. She was a certified Professional Legal Secretary and Certified Legal Assistant. She also loved teaching and taught classes at T-VI (now CNM). Despite her diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis in the 1970's and her increasing lack of mobility, Phyllis never used it as an excuse to do anything other than enjoy life to the fullest. She was active in her church and created many special friendships at Calvary Chapel East Mountain, First Christian Church in Albuquerque and Bible Study Fellowship. She was a very active grandmother taking her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to movies, museums, and creating special memories for them. She met and married Wilbur Stearns and they had 23 blissful years together spent in travel, bird-watching and special conversations with friends and family on their Edgewood veranda. A Memorial service with buffet lunch will be held at Embassy Suites Hotel, 1000 Woodward Place NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Saturday, January 21, 2012, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, in the Sandia Ballroom IV-V.

STEWART -- FRANCES L. LANIGAN Was born July 27, 1934 in Gallup, NM and passed away Thursday, January 5, 2012 in Albuquerque, NM, at the age of 77. Frances was preceded in death by her husband Gerry; parents, Bill and Emily Lanigan; and by her son, Steven Conlee. She is survived by her son, Mitchell Conlee and wife Terri; daughter-in-law, Darlene Conlee; sister, Emily Leingang; stepdaughters, Valerie Fields and husband Perry, Rochelle and stepson, Frank Stewart; three grandsons; three granddaughters; four great-grandsons; two great-granddaughters; five step granddaughters; five step grandsons; a step great-grandson; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins who love and will miss her. Frances was an employee of the Civerolo Law Firm for eighteen plus years. She also worked part time for American Legion Post 49 and was active in Unit 49 Auxiliary. A Memorial Service will be held at the American Legion Post 49, 11007 Central NE, on Wednesday January 11, 2012 at 1:00 pm. SUAZO -- LEOPOLDO age 81 years of age, died December 31, 2011, in Bailey, CO. He was born February 19, 1930 in Pilar, NM to parents Amarante and Regina Suazo. Leo was a dedicated son, husband, dad and Pompo. Leo proudly served his country in the Armed Forces as a tank operator, receiving the Army of Occupational Medal (Germany). He raised his family in Albuquerque, NM where he retired after 30 years as a truck driver. He and his wife moved back to his childhood home in Pilar, NM after retiring. Leo was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Cecilia L. Suazo, died February 5, 2008 and daughter-in-law Dana Howey-Suazo, died June 19, 2008. He is survived by two sons, Silas V. Suazo and Leo R. Suazo II.; one daughter, Regina A. Suazo; one daughter-in-law, Janell G. Suazo; and two grandchildren, Miguel A. Suazo, and Sarah P. Suazo. Services will be held at 1:00 pm on January 12, 2012, at St. Joseph On The Rio Grande, Albuquerque, New Mexico with a reception following. TAYLOR -- DAVID WILLIAM Passed away suddenly on January 3, 2012 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was born on January 30, 1936 to William Taylor and Marian Finotti. David will be remembered as a generous, loving, family man with a life full of adventure and innovation. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1953-61 and was a proud graduate of the University of Florida (B.S. Mechanical Engineering '63). He worked at Pratt & Whitney, RDA, and Rocketdyne where he designed and tested turbojets and laser weapons. David was an avid sailor, frequenting the Caribbean and restoring his sailboat in St. Martin. David is survived by his four children, Shariesse (Robert), Chrisann (Kaila), Shawn (Sharon), David (Tara); five grandchildren, John, Brandon (Ali), Dustin, Jackson and Jennison; two great-grandchildren, Alynna and Antony; ex-wife and dear friend, Phyllis Boyts Taylor, married 41 years; two sisters, Faye Walz (Dave) and Sue Jenkins. David's last 14 years were lovingly shared with Donna Allison, his constant companion and travel partner; along with her three children, Terri (David), Tony (Crissy), Tom; and grandson, Brad. David touched the lives of many. He will be sorely missed by his friends at the Solo Club where he served on the Board of Directors, remaining active until his death. ULIBARRI -- RODOLFO Rudy passed away on 12-17-2011. He had requested that there be no services.
