ALLAN -- JAMES OSCAR Age 78, of Albuquerque, passed away September 1, 2011 after a valiant battle against C O P D, and pneumonia. He was born in Schuyler County, Mo. and graduated Memphis High School in 1951 where he played on both basketball and softball teams. He joined the Army and was sent to Korea and was attached to the Air Force installing pipelines. After returning home he married Lois Snowbarger in 1956. The family moved to New Mexico where he drove trucks and worked construction. He later bought Diamond Transfer and managed it for 37 years. A devoted husband and father he made time to coach little league baseball, teach his son welding, auto mechanics or go on family outings. He loved to take his granddaughter Bailey out on the boat or just to get ice cream. James was preceded in death by his wife Lois; father Fred Allen and mother Lela Allen. He is survived by his bother Bud; sister Jean; son James W.; granddaughter Bailey K. Allen; and former daughter in law Valerie Allen. A memorial service will be held Saturday September 10, 2011 at 1:00 pm at Daniels Family Funeral Services, 7601 Wyoming Blvd. NE. ALLEY -- RAMONA MAE Age 60, passed away Friday, September 2, 2011 in Albuquerque, NM. Ramona was born on July 17, 1951 in Hood River, OR and is survived by her three sons, Micah Alley, Joseph Alley, Trevor Alley; grandson Aiden Alley; father James Wood. Ramona was much loved and will leave a lasting impression on many people's lives. Ramona was a dedicated Christian and surrounded herself with faithful loving friends and family. There will be a Memorial Service for her on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at Victory Outreach Church, 414 Charleston St. SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108, with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to give any donations to Victory Outreach Church. Most of Ramona's family lives on the northwest portion of the country but she chose to remain in Albuquerque to be near her three sons while fighting her illness. "There is a special place in heaven for a mother of three boys" was one of her favorite quotes and we are certain she found that special place. Ramona's life was centered on faith, family and friends and she will be sincerely missed.

ANAYA -- SAMUEL NELSON Age 66, passed away Saturday, September 3, 2011. He was born July 1, 1945 to Jose and Feliz Anaya in Albuquerque, NM. Samuel was a lifelong resident of the Albuquerque area. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the American Legion. Mr. Anaya retired with AT&SF Railroad and then opened his owned barber shop, Sam & Sons. Samuel was a devout Catholic. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose Liberato and Feliz Z. Anaya and his brother, Levi Anthony Anaya. Samuel is survived by his daughter, Vanessa Anaya; three sons, Gabriel Anaya and wife, Andrea, Samuel Anaya and wife, Dorothea and Jon Anaya; five grandchildren, Markeith, Adrien, Izaac, Abigail and Samuel; brother, Mariano J. Anaya and wife Eva; sister-in-law, Dolores Anaya; and several nieces and nephews. Rosary to be recited on Thursday, September 8, 2011, 6:00 p.m. at Daniels Family Funeral Chapel, 4310 Sara SE, Rio Rancho. Charlotte was a long time resident of Albuquerque, NM and was well known and respected member of the Catholic Community. She is preceded in death by her parents, Francisco and Floripa de Herrera; husband, Juan D. Baca; daughter, Juliette L. Baca; and her seven brothers, Leandro, Max, Pantaleon, Enrique, Epifanio, Mercelino, Frank; and two sisters, Julia and Flora. She is survived by her sister Jessie Garcia; her children, Laura L. Ulibarri and friend Lalo Contreras, Maria F. Baca, Donna I. Andrade and her husband Daniel J. Andrade, John Baca III and his wife Mary L. CASIAS -- FRANK VIRGIL Age 74, went home to be with our Lord and Savior Sunday, September 4, 2011. He was born August 22, 1937 to Max and Carmen, in San Luis, CO. Frank bravely served in the Military, and continued his life career in Operations of the Army National Guard. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; brother, Donnie Casias; sister, Lila Lewis. DOYLE -- KATHERINE N. "KATE" Momma Kate passed away peacefully and quietly on Friday, Sept. 2 at home with her family and friends at her side. She was very thankful and overwhelmed by the prayers and love that were given to her in her time of need. She was raised in Albuquerque where she graduated from Highland High School, worked as a unit and medical secretary for the hospitals and doctors in Albu. for over thirty years. She loved reading romance novels, baking cakes and pies, Nascar racing and her grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and we will celebrate her life on Friday, Sept. 9 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at 6005 Zimmerman Ave. NE. GARCIA -- JOE DELL 57, passed away on Tuesday, August 30, 2011. Joe was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Joe was a dedicated father and husband who loved to fish and take annual trips to Mexico. He loved music and played locally in bands through out his earlier years. GORDON -- LEON M. Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 31, 2011. Born in Kansas City, MO, he was 85 years old and a resident of Albuquerque, NM for 55 years. He served in the Navy during World War II on the USS Caney in the South Pacific. He enjoyed workouts at the gym, volunteering at the Humane Society and Oil Painting. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Marilyn Gordon; son, Steve Gordon; daughters, Theresa and Georgia Gordon; daughter-in-law, Louise Gordon; five grandchildren, Ian, Van and Candace Gordon, and Tyson and Adam Nemudrov; and seven great-grandchildren, all of Albuquerque, NM. HEPPLEWHITE -- ELIZABETH ANN (Known as Ann) of Midland, Texas; formerly of Albuquerque, New Mexico passed away on Friday, September 2, 2011. She is survived by her two daughters, Pamela Jenkins and Janet Hepplewhite; three grandchildren, Tricia Boler and husband Greg, Mark Jenkins and wife, Emily, and Kathy Kuehn and husband, John; and 10 great-grandchildren. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hepplewhite; and two brothers, Richard Brownlee and Thomas Brownlee. She was born on February 1, 1919 in Kansas to Charles and Lenore Brownlee and graduated from Emporia State College in 1937 with a degree in Library Science. On February 6, 1943, she and Robert E. Hepplewhite were married in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She resided in Albuquerque until 2008 when she moved to Midland to be closer to her daughter. From 1962 to 1973, she worked as a librarian for the Albuquerque Public Schools. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was born in Dodge City, KS in 1916 to Isaac Harrison Bassett and Bessie Fay Medley where she attended Dodge City Community College. Vera was married to Ned Ulysses Stephenson in 1939, who passed away in 1954. Vera then married Willard E. Hoffman in 1967, who passed away in 1984. Vera worked in the dental field for many years while raising her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother who adored her family. Vera was very active in Grace Episcopal Church in Hutchinson, KS and St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Artesia, NM. MORGAN -- PATRICIA L. Patricia Louise Ross Morgan passed away and joined her beloved husband Robert W. Morgan on their 49th Wedding Anniversary, Friday, August 26, 2011. She was born in the summer of 1928 in Grenville, NM to Christopher and Minnie Ross. She was one of eight children. After graduating High School she married Bill Lathrop in 1948. They had a beautiful daughter, Sheryl Lynn, in September 1949. After a divorce, she raised Sheryl by herself until 1962 when she met and married Bob Morgan. In November 1963 they had a daughter, Michelle Lea. Pat enjoyed bowling on her Tuesday morning league, socializing with her sorority sisters of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, and traveling abroad with the TWA Wives Club and family. In 1988 Michelle married Darrell L. Langston and gave to her the joy of her life, granddaughter, Morgana Shea. Pat and Bob retired to Ruidoso, NM but returned to Albuquerque to be closer to family and friends. Robert preceded her in death by only three months. They are now together again. Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 10, at 2:00 pm at Sunset Memorial Chapel, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE, Alb., NM. Flowers can be sent to the Chapel on the day of service.

NEEL -- ELLIS (DEAN) Age 101, passed away September 6, 2011. She was born in Bessie, Texas on May 29, 1910, the daughter of Charley and Katie (Johnson) Dean. Ellis moved with her family to Lincoln County, NM in 1911 where her father Charley had a cattle ranch. The Dean family settled in the Estancia Valley area in 1925. After graduating from Albuquerque High School in 1927 Ellis attended Secretarial School. After completing her studies she began working for the Keleher Law Firm where she remained a devoted employee and friend for forty-nine years. Ellis always had a sense of adventure. She enjoyed traveling to Australia, New Zealand, the Scandinavian countries, Russia and cruised through the Panama Canal where she rode a horse in the rain forest. But, her trip of a lifetime was to Africa when she was 87 years old. She very much enjoyed being with friends and family, playing games until early morning, rooting for the Dallas Cowboys, riding horses and eating New Mexico green chili. She loved to go to her cabin in Questa, NM that she and her husband Bud built in the 1950's. There she could take hikes in the mountains to enjoy the birds and flowers, have covered dish dinners with friends up the canyon or see the beautiful aspens in the fall. Ellis and her late husband Bud were active in the Shrine Mounted Patrol and worked hard for the Shriners Hospital for Children. She received a life membership in the Daughters of the Nile where she held many offices. She had been a member of the Nile Patrol and Alhydaiya and was active in the Shrine Honored Ladies and the Masonic Widows Club of Temple Lodge #6. She will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends. She was preceded in death by her wonderful and loving husband Bud and her brothers Bruce and Crile Dean. She is survived by her sisters-in-law Bertha Dean of Albuquerque, NM and Zelda Dean of Pamona, CA; plus many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank everyone at the Cottages and Hospice De La Luz for their wonderful love and care during these past two and a half years. PAIZ -- FLORA Was taken from this world by the holy angels and into the arms of our loving Lord and Savior on September 4, 2011. She was the eldest of 15 children born to Arthur and Eliza Ashe in Agua Azul in Colfax County, New Mexico. She married Joe Lovato in 1942 who was taken from her in WWII, in 1944. She married Albino Paiz in 1946 who preceded her in death in 2002. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Eddie; eight siblings. She is survived by six siblings; her children, Frank Lovato, Gina Yaker, Arthur Paiz, Agnes Martinez and husband Frank, Veronica Lopez and husband Robert, Tony Paiz and wife JoAnn, David Paiz and wife Jeanette, Eliza Strasser and husband Paul, Geri Paiz-Chavez and husband Joseph, Anna Torres and husband John; 27 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. She was years ahead of her time in some ways, and instinctively believed that women should make their own way in the world, and in other ways she was like a past era. She was a true pioneer of the advancement of education, a teacher by profession. The gift of Flora was her great love of God, of all children, of nature, and everything beautiful. PATTERSON -- JERRY "JP" Was welcomed into the loving arms of Our Lord on Saturday, September 3, 2011 with the two loves of his life, his wife, Tina and his daughter Stephanie, beside him. He fought a valiant battle against lung cancer with an iron will until the end. Jerry enjoyed a career in the commercial tire business for over 30 years, and through that venue, met many extraordinary people and treasured friends. Jerry was known for maintaining absolute integrity in every aspect of his life. He grew up in Phoenix to a loving family, but a career opportunity brought him to New Mexico. JP immediately fell in love with the people, the landscape, and the red and green chile. Jerry was a thoughtful and kind man with a dry wit, but his biggest attribute was his big heart. He always put the needs and wants of others before his own. His loss leaves a huge hole in all of those who knew and loved him, but he knew he was heaven-bound. Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Pat and Grace Patterson, and his nephew, Todd. He is survived by his wife, Tina and daughter, Stephanie and her husband, Mark. He is also survived by his two sisters, Patti and Peggy and husband Howard whom he loved very much. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Sandie and her husband, Jim, mother and father-in-law Ramon and Margaret with whom he had a very special closeness. Their support during his illness with their "meals on wheels" as he called it, kept him strengthened and JP was so touched by their kindness. JP is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews of whom he was always so very proud. REED -- BILLY GROVER (Bill Reed to all) passed away peacefully September 5, 2011 at his home in Ruidoso, New Mexico with Dianne, his wife of 35 years, his son Stephen and wife Carolyn, at his side. A long illness finally took it's toll. He is survived by his son Stephen Reed; daughter Susan Cooper; and step-son Dred Parsons; five grandchildren; and three great- grandchildren. Bill was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on Nov. 18, 1922, the only child of Willie Ann and Grover Reed, both deceased. There he lived until he joined the US Navy at the beginning of World War 11, serving on the destroyer escort USS Brazier as a first class radio-man until the war ended. His life after the war took many directions, finally settling on ranch brokerage and appraisal until he retired in l997. Bill was a life-long lover of Quarter Horses, servicing faithfully in the New Mexico Quarter Horse Assn. ultimately being their president. In l978 he became president of the AQHA. He was inducted into the Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 1995. He always maintained his love of both the horses and the people associated with them until his death. He was a man of his word, and could always be depended upon to help anyone in need. He was loved by all and all loved him. Visitation will be Friday, September 9, at LaGrone Funeral Chapel at Ruidoso from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM with the funeral service at 10:00 AM, with burial to follow at the Ft. Stanton Cemetery.

SANCHEZ -- ORLANDO ARTURO Passed away September 5, 2011. He was born January 15, 1924 to Sotero Moises Sanchez and Beatrice Aragon Sanchez in Dilia, New Mexico. Orlando attended the Santa Rosa public schools until he enlisted in the Army. He was a paratrooper. 82nd airborne and infantry, and proudly served his country. He was wounded in France during the Normandy Invasion and spent a year at Bruns General Hospital recuperating. He then received his G.E.D. and went on to the New Mexico Highlands University under the G.I. Bill, graduating in 1950 with a B.S. Degree in Science and Business. He taught in several rural schools in Guadalupe and San Miguel counties and was the first Principal at the new Sapello School. He then went on to the West Las Vegas schools where he taught science and language arts until 1963. He changed professions and became a case worker for the Human Services Dept. in Santa Rosa for two years, and then on to Socorro as a case supervisor and was the County Director until 1971 when he went on to Arizona State University, graduating in 1973 with a Masters in Social Work. While attending grad school, Orlando did field work at the Maricopa County hospital and also researched bills for the President of the Senate. He was a Senator for the School of Social Work to the University and was selected by the faculty and students from the School of Social Work to give the commencement address for their graduation ceremony. Upon returning to New Mexico, he worked in Santa Fe and Albuquerque in various administrative positions, and finally retired in 1981. Orlando is survived by his wife, Sofia Maes Sanchez; children, Lorraine Mendiola, Bobbi Ansloan (John), Orlando Sanchez, Jr. (Julie-Lowe); grandsons Matthew and Gabe Mendiola and their father John Mendiola; and grandsons Ryan and Nick Ansloan. He is also survived by brothers, Ernest (Mary), Joe, Herman and Gene (Dorothy); sisters, Ernestine Chavez, Janet Dominguez, June (Larry) Ziegenfuss, Juliette (John) Dempsey; sisters-in-law, Agnes, Mary Ortega, Linda and Petra Sanchez; special friends, Jon and Zona Alexander, Bill and Susan Gates, John and Joann Buehler, Belen Simoes, Cecilia and Edwin Reyes, Ken Shepperd and Jack and Paula Lowe and Flo Ansloan, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Orlando was preceded in death by his parents Sotero and Beatrice Sanchez; in-laws Florence and Bennie Maes; three brothers, Canuto, Albert and Sotero; brothers-in-law, Boni Chavez and Ray Dominguez; and sister-in-law, Alice Quinn Sanchez. He will always be loved and missed and remembered by his immediate and extended family. STEVENS -- SYBIL MAE A resident of Los Lunas since 1977 passed away September 5, 2011. She is survived by a son, Steve Stevens of Albuquerque, NM and daughter, Jean Emmons and son-in-law, Dave Emmons of Canon City, CO. She is also survived by granddaughter, Rene Holtam and husband Rob and great-grandchildren Ryan, Tanner, Tyler and Robbie of Centenniel, CO; sister-in-law Yoko Downey: niece Shirley Stout and her husband Barry; nephew Patrick Downey: and great-nephew Derek Stout; many friends including Bernice Coleman and Joe Garcia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry in 1957; her father, Arthur Downey, in 1982; her mother, Annie Mae Downey in 1997; her brother Stafford Downey in 2009; and one brother Stanley, who passed away at six months of age. She was born in Tucumcari, NM, December 3, 1926, but moved shortly thereafter to Memphis, TX, where she lived until age 12. The family then moved to Mountainair, NM, where she spent many happy years. Sybil moved with her family to Albuquerque in 1955. In 1957, she enrolled in and completed studies at Draughns Business School, and in 1962 she began college at the University of New Mexico majoring in Elementary Education. After graduating in 1966, Sybil taught school at Valle Vista Elementary School for 20 years. She was married to Dave VanNoy for 14 years and together they enjoyed many years raising and racing thoroughbred horses in the Belen area and later moving to Los Lunas. After retiring from Albuquerque Public Schools, Sybil worked part-time keeping books for a small business in Bosque Farms and Albuquerque, finally retiring at the age of 80.There will be a viewing at Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Mountainair, NM on Friday, September 9, 2011 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be at 1:00 p.m. with Ray Mondragon officiating. THOMEN -- CARMEN "CARMELITA" SERNA Age 97, born July 16, 1914 in San Miguel County, Ribera, New Mexico, and passed away September 4, 2011. Carmelita had the faith of a saint. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, she was generous to her family and others, she believed in contributing and helping the less fortunate; especially children. Carmelita raised seven children primarily on her own after the death of her husband Frank in 1959. She was a wonderful baker; her specialties were yeast bread and pies. She lived a long and active life until she passed. Carmelita was preceded in death by her parents, Claudio and Cleofas Serna; brother Timoteo Serna (1944); sister, Josefita Dolores Serna (1917); husband, Frank Thomen Sr. (1959); youngest son, Timothy Joseph Thomen (2007). Carmelita is survived by special daughter-in-law Anita Thomen and by her children Dolores Tapia, Frank Thomen Jr., Susie E. Scrivner and husband Dave, Raymond Thomen and wife Charlotte, daughter-in-law Deb Sayres-Thomen, Rosemary Stewart and Elizabeth Livesay. WATKINS -- CHARLES T. JR. (RET.) COL. A resident of Albuquerque, NM, passed away September 2, 2011. He was born on February 10, 1925 in Union County NM near Clayton. His parents, Charlie and Mabel Watkins, were public school teachers in NM for nearly 50 years. Charles was a member of the United States Air Force for 30 years. He enlisted in March 1943, and entered the cadet-training program for pilots. He graduated in June of 1944 as a pilot and was a Second Lieutenant at age nineteen. He retired back in his home state of NM in March 1973 and is a veteran of three Wars: World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War. He was awarded many honors and medals for his dedication to our country and his skill as a fighter pilot including: The Distinguished Flying Cross, The Legion of Merit, The Air Medal and the Bronze Star. His wife Madonna survives Col. Watkins. They were married for 66 years. He is also survived by his children: Charles (Chuck) T. Watkins III, Lynn and Mike Felts, Bruce and Kelly Watkins and Susan Baca. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren: Phillip Watkins, Bryan and Thomas Felts, Chelsea and Allison Watkins and Lorenzo, Roni and Addison Baca. And by his two great-grandchildren: Carlos and Xander Watkins.
