ARMSTRONG -- ROSA LEE Beloved life-long resident of Santa Rosa, NM, passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 26, 2011. She was 79. Born July 15, 1932 in House, New Mexico, she was preceded in death by her parents, local rancher Roy Armstrong and Dorothy (Darnell) Fritchman. After graduating as valedictorian of Santa Rosa High School's Class of 1951, she went on to attend Grace and Glory Bible School in Kansas City, MO, graduating in 1953. Upon returning home, she began a twenty-five year career with Mountain Bell Telephone. After "retirement," she worked at the local bank, the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce and the Silver Moon Cafe. Though her beautiful flaming red hair is oft mentioned, it was her deep and abiding Faith in Christ that most recall. This is her true legacy. Rosa Lee's spirit of gentleness and compassion will long be remembered. Those who knew her speak of a kind, generous heart and laughing blue eyes. She was always willing to listen to one in need and offer comfort. Even the stray cats knew she would give them a loving home. Generations of local folk remember Rosa Lee as their Sunday school teacher, a position she held for some forty years. Rosa Lee was part of several congregations, including Grace Assembly, and the Santa Rosa Baptist Church. Until a stroke twelve years ago, she dearly loved playing piano and organ. Well known as a church pianist of exceptional talent who could sight read any piece of music set before her, few knew she could also play a mean boogie-woogie. Though a brief marriage to Reverend Vander Espy in 1999 did not last, the two remained friends to the end. Until her brief time in hospice care at her sister's home in Albuquerque, Rosa Lee remained a strong, independent lady. In addition to a huge circle of friends in Santa Rosa and a large Christian family around the country, Rosa Lee is lovingly missed by her sister Anna Belle Van Huss of Albuquerque, nephew James Van Huss and Linda, niece Diana Sherwood and husband Michael, great-great nephew Nicholas Wilson, great-niece Julia Castro, her husband Edward and sons Nick, Alex and Zachary, great- nephew Christopher Enright and Lauren, great- nephew Benjamin Enright and Amanda, and their daughter, Lucy, cousin Hazel Roberts and all her family. Memorial services will be held on Saturday August 20, 11:00 am, at the First Baptist Church, 635 Lake Drive, Santa Rosa, NM with longtime family friend, J.E. Ballew officiating. Please feel free to share stories and even photos for a memory album the family is putting together. Arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home, 923 S. Third Street, Santa Rosa, NM (575) 472-3369. To place an online tribute or sign the guest book please visit: www.chavezfuneralhome.com

GALLEGOS -- LOUIS H. "LOU" Who devoted his career to public service and was a top administrator for governors in New Mexico and federal officials in Washington, D.C., has died at age 72. Gallegos worked as chief of staff for former Republican Gov. Gary Johnson and retired U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici. He was appointed to posts in the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Interior departments. He died Saturday, Aug. 6 at his home in Rio Rancho. State Republican Party Chairman Monty Newman said, "Lou's dedication to public service and to the great state of New Mexico will leave a legacy for generations to come." Gallegos was born in Amalia in Taos County and served in the U.S. Air Force for nine years. After stints at New Mexico's highway department and labor agency, Gallegos started a long career in federal public service by joining the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1968. He served as a regional director of the food stamp program and a state director of the Farmers Home administration. He was Domenici's chief of staff in 1980-84 in Washington, D.C., and the senator's director of field operations in New Mexico in 1977-80. Former Interior Secretary Manuel Lujan Jr. once wrote that "government works because of the dedication of thousands of men and women...Lou Gallegos is one of the most dedicated and gifted of those people." Gallegos served under Lujan as assistant secretary for policy, management and budget in the Interior Department in 1989-90. During former Gov. Garrey Carruthers' administration, Gallegos was secretary of the state Human Services Department in 1987-88. Carruthers once wrote, "Lou has always wanted to be at bat when you needed runs. He has taken on the tough jobs, stayed focused and highly principled and delivered in the clutch. Lou loves the game of public service and does it very well. It has always been a team game for Lou. He has always been in the game for those who matter the most - all of the citizens of New Mexico." Gallegos was Johnson's chief of staff from 1995 to 2001, including doing double duty as acting secretary of the Human Services Department during part of his tenure. He helped oversee implementation of welfare reforms and Medicaid managed care. Cabinet secretaries in the Johnson administration once recommended Gallegos for a public service award, lauding his ability to quickly grasp the substance of a complex issue and to "almost instantly assess its nuances and political consequences." After leaving the Johnson administration, Gallegos served as assistant secretary for administration in the U.S. Department of Agriculture and retired in 2003. In between his many governmental assignments, Gallegos farmed in Lovato and later at his home in Rio Rancho planted a garden each year. He collected elephants, knives, unique rocks and Mickey Mouse collectables In a speech at Tuskegee University in 2001 to a conference of professional agricultural workers, Gallegos called for a "grand coalition" of Hispanics and African Americans "working together to achieve our common dreams." "I dream of the day when my African American/Hispanic grandchildren...will not have to define their world by the color of their skin. It is a good dream," Gallegos said. Lou is survived by his wife, Rita Nunez-Gallegos; his five children; Jerry L.L. Gallegos (wife Cara, children Gracie and Loretta), Martin A. Gallegos (wife Mary, children Antonia and Martina), Lauris H. Gallegos (wife Pepper, children Alexis and Duncan), James A. Gallegos (wife Lana, children Joanne, Miquela, Jami, Santiago and Eric) and daughter (and favorite) Louisa M. Gallegos and their mother Maria Gallegos. LOPEZ -- BEATRICE VIGIL 1912 - 2011 Beatrice Lopez died peacefully in her sleep on 10 August 2011 at her apartment in the El Castillo Residence Home, Santa Fe, New Mexico where she has lived since 1999. Born in Clayton, New Mexico, Bea spent much of her early childhood in Bueyeros, New Mexico, perhaps the happiest and most fondly remembered period of time in her life. She graduated from High School in Clayton, and immediately began teaching in rural schools in Bueyeros, Los Vigiles near Las Vegas, New Mexico, and Tecolote, New Mexico. During that time she also attended Highlands University, eventually receiving her BA and MA degrees there. Her life's work and vocation, and her greatest pleasure, came from teaching, and she devoted herself unconditionally to her students and to their success. Most of her professional career was spent teaching in West Las Vegas schools, from the time she married Blas A. Lopez of Las Vegas, New Mexico, in 1934 until she retired in 1979. They enjoyed a rich and varied life together, and were married for sixty five years, living primarily in Las Vegas, New Mexico, then later in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. After the death of Blas, Bea moved to El Castillo in Santa Fe. Beatrice became the staunch matriarch of her large extended family, known for her generosity and for her solid reliability, playing the role of family mainstay for family members both older and younger than her. She regarded her extended family as the central focus in her life, and loved nothing more than family gatherings and outings rich in the exchange of news about current family doings and old family stories, all garnished with plenty of delicious and simple Nuevo Mexicano food, of which she was master cook. We will miss her fantastic white tortillas, thick and soft, and of course her special holiday treats: empanaditas, biscochitos, torta de huevo, panocha, chicos and pastelito. She is survived by her immediate family, two children, Marie Jeannine Lopez of Sacramento, California, and Bernard Lopez, of Tesuque, New Mexico; four grandchildren and their families, Raqhel Lopez, Antonio Lopez, Nicola Lopez and Clea Lopez. Memorial services will take place in December in Santa Fe, public notice will be given prior to that time. In lieu of flowers, people are urged to make any contributions in her name to El Castillo. Arrangements are under the direction of Berardinelli Family Funeral Services, 1399 Luisa Street, Santa Fe, NM, 87505, (505) 984-8600.
