ANELLA -- MARY ANDERMAN Was born in Albuquerque on April 20, 1929. She was educated at Manzano Day School, Sandia School for Girls, Albuquerque High, Hockaday (Dallas), UNM, and Finch College (New York City), but her formal education didn't account for her wisdom. That sprang from her free spirit. She loved to garden and did so with an eye towards uncultivated exuberance: she tended her flowerbed so that it looked like a wild meadow. She viewed the world with a clear-eyed humility and had no patience for the pompous or self-important. She loved classical music, modern art, and whimsical kinetic sculpture. Her favorite Albuquerque landscape was the ocean-like horizon of the west mesa. She found solace in the solitude of open spaces. She loved to travel, and read a culture not by its artifacts but by its people. She loved her independence, but most of all she loved her family and friends. She was a rebellious daughter, an enduring wife, a loving mother, and a loyal friend. A graceful listener, her dignity and integrity earned her the blessing of several life-long friendships. A person of understated elegance, she had a quiet strength that came from being able to laugh at the infinite wonder and delight of it all. She is survived by her sons, Anthony Anella of Albuquerque, NM, and James Anella of Delray Beach, FL; and by her grandchildren, Gibb, Kate and Clare Anella of Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Maud Anderman of Albuquerque; her brother, Wege Anderman of Denver; her daughter, Mia Anella of Albuquerque. Interment will take place at 10:00 am on Monday, August 8, 2011 at Fairview Cemetery. A Memorial will follow at her home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Mexico Philharmonic, PO Box 21428, Albuquerque, NM 87154 or to the Aldo Leopold Foundation, PO Box 77, Baraboo, Wisconsin 53913.

BELL -- OLIVE MCCASKILL December 22, 1915 - July 26, 2011 Olive Lance McCaskill was born in Greenville, Mississippi, on December 22, 1915. She studied journalism at Southeastern Louisiana University andworked as the society reporter for the California Democrat in California, where she was sent on assignment to interview Saul Bell. Saul and Olive were married in August of 1937 and left for California on their honeymoon. When they hit the mountains of New Mexico, Olive insisted that they stop and settle there. They made their home in Albuquerque, where they raised nine children and shared 59 happy years of marriage. Olive was a gifted and captivating storyteller, an avid reader, and a lifelong learner with an unquenchable thirst for adventure. Her love of life extended to many creative pursuits: she was an accomplished seamstress and knitter, ceramic artist, woodcarver, glassworker, and gardener. She inspired her loved ones with her passionate approach to living. In 1949, she graduated from the Gemological Institute of America-the only woman in her class. For her 60th birthday, she took flying lessons, pursuing a lifelong desire to be a pilot. In her eighties, she built a cottage in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, where she spent ten happy summers. She was co-founder and chairman of the Rio Grande Valley Celtic Festival and Highland Games, which is still going strong 23 years later. She founded The MacAskill Sept Society of the U.S. and Canada and co-founded the Clan MacLaren Society of North America. She has been an officer and very active member of the Clan MacLeod Society for more than 30 years. Olive marveled at the world and modeled an attitude of curiosity and passion for her children and grandchildren. She embodied a spirit of adventure and boldness, and gave each of her descendants a deep appreciation for their family history. She passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Olive was preceded in death by her husband Saul Bell and her son Mandel Bell. She leaves behind a nephew, Jamie McCaskill, and 36 direct descendants including her eight living children: Elizabeth, Hugh (Margaret), Eddie (Pam), Neil, Alan (Audrey), Martin (Paula Crevoshay), Molly (Charles Springer), Bruce (Darcel); 13 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. We cherish our memories of her and will pass her stories on and on. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Olive's name to the New Mexico Library for the Blind (1209 Camino Carlos Rey, Santa Fe, 87507-5166),a great program that provided her pleasure and sanity for over 17 years, or Open Space Alliance(P.O. Box 91265, Albuquerque, NM 87199), because Olive valued the preservation of New Mexico's beautiful open spaceand enjoyed seeing the bright green of their sorghum field from her south garden. HETHER -- MAUREEN MARY (MARY) Passed away on July 24 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Born Dec. 5, 1946, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, her nomadic spirit led her to live in many parts of the United States, but La Crosse was always home. Mary was a woman of multiple talents and strong convictions about social justice. While still in High School, she borrowed money to travel alone on a Grayhound bus to Alabama and walked in the Selma to Montgomery civil rights march. Mary earned a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology from Indiana University. She was a creator and co-owner of the very successful "Collective Fantasy," an innovative fine arts movie theatre in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In later years, Mary recognized a talent working with teenagers. She taught herself Calculus at the age of sixty, and returned to school to earn teacher certification and a Masters Degree in Math. She worked for several years in Ft. Wingate, New Mexico on the Navajo Indian Reservation and most recently was a math teacher to mothers and pregnant teens at New Futures High School in Albuquerque. Mary had a sensitive, discriminating appreciation for all the arts. Wherever she lived, she created vegetable and flower gardens, and loved to sit in the sun, reading and writing. She was a talented wordsmith and kept a personal journal of observations about books and the vagaries of life. One of the last entries, in March, after realizing the full seriousness of her illness, was a quote by Louisa May Alcott: "I am not afraid of storms for I am learning how to sail my ship." We love Mary very much and wish her smooth sailing. Mary is survived by her beloved partner, Suzanne Blanchet of Albuquerque; brother Steven Hether of Albuquerque; sister Christine Hether of Maui, Hawaii; sister Connie Hether of La Crosse, Wisconsin, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends. A Celebration of Life will be held in the summer of 2012 in La Crosse.

HUNICK -- HENRY July 28, 1999 IN LOVING MEMORY OF MY BROTHER There is so much I wish to say, I think about you everyday. I miss your laugh and your smile, Neither lost or forgotten. It doesn't seem real that you're not around, I still look for you around in town. I will never again see your wave and your smile. We won't stand on the street and visit for a while. No "how you doing Sis" with a big hug to follow, No "what are you doing tonight", or "I'll see ya tomorrow". All of these things, I cherish so dearly, In my heart, I remember so clearly. 12 years later, seems like forever. You're in God's hands as he planned. Watching from above, an angel in heaven who will always be loved. Life, times, and people here have changed so much, But you and I are the same, what we were for each other, we still are. Missing and loving you more today than yesterday. Bro, No me des penas. Look around Mom's home. Your loving sister, Rosie (Tootsie)

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, John D. Rogers and Leslie M. Redman; her step-daughter, Griselle Kewish. She is survived by siblings, Jo Ann Allegre and Jack Roberts; three children, Constance and husband Charles Slocomb, James (Rogers) and wife Yvonne, Darrel (Rogers) and wife Cheryl; a step-daughter, Averill Redman; three grandchildren, Jenine (Slocomb) Clevenger and her husband Doug, Rachel (Rogers) and her husband Tom White, Lisa Slocomb, and Wendy (Kewish) Vanderham; great-grandchildren, Sofia Slocomb, Charlie Clevenger, and Isabelle Katherine White and Justin and Ryan Vanderham. Norma worked at the Weekly Reader in Columbus, OH to support her family and her husband in gaining a degree. The family moved to Los Alamos in 1951 where John had been recruited to work during the war as a technician. Norma was entranced by the outdoors and loved the mountains, the mesas, the small streams, and the clean smell of the air. When she was outdoors, Norma was often heard exuberantly singing tunes from light-operas. She was teased by her friends for her deep, contralto voice. Bandelier, Camp May, and the Jemez Mountains were her backyard playgrounds where the family often skied, hiked, fished and picnicked. Norma was athletic and an accomplished tennis player always chosen in the first round when deciding partners for "mixed up doubles" matches in Los Alamos. She was blessed with beauty and a delightful humor that made her a favorite in bridge clubs and The League of Women Voters. She was fond of children and worked as an aide at Pueblo Junior High and Mountain Elementary School for several years. She made Los Alamos a home for many happy years. In 1978, Norma married Leslie M. Redman a LANL scientist who lived in Nambe. Les and she had 24 loving years together. Leslie was known for his generosity, love of dogs and photographic memory. They moved briefly back to Los Alamos but first Les' ill-health and then Norma's physical decline required full-time assisted living available then only in Santa Fe. Until her death Norma's spontaneous wit, her warmth and personal touch endeared her to many friends. Norma asked to be interred near her parents in Lebo, Kansas. Norma was the loving and affectionate center for her family and will be fondly remembered and loved forever. A private remembrance will be held in Kansas at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please give memorial donations in Norma's name to Friends of Bandelier, or to Los Amigos de Valle Caldera, or to the charity of your choice.

STEVENS -- DONALD PHILIP Age 96, passed away July 28, 2011 at home after a brief illness, surrounded in love by his five children. He is survived by his five children: Nancy Comprelli (Frank) of Moraga, CA, Mary Gadeken (Arlan) of Kennewick, WA, Phil Stevens (Lynda) of Albuquerque, Gail Turner (Harry) of Oak Harbor, WA, and Mark Stevens of Albuquerque; ten granddaughters; two step-grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Nan Stevens; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and beloved Betty, his wife of 60 years. Don was born June 28, 1915 in Boulder, Colorado to Harold and Florence Stevens. As a boy, he loved hiking, camping, and fishing in the Colorado Rockies. At age 16 he met the love of his life, Betty Gilbert. They dated for seven years before marrying in 1938. He earned his degree in Architectural Engineering from the U. of Illinois, graduating in 1938 at the top of his class. He worked as an architect in Denver for a year, then returned to the U. of Illinois and received his Master's degree in 1940. He taught architecture there until 1942, when he accepted an associate professorship at the U. of Texas. In 1948 the family moved to Albuquerque, where Don became a partner with Gordon Ferguson, forming the firm of Ferguson-Stevens Architects (now SMPC Architects.) He was the primary architect for both Presbyterian Hospital and Lovelace Clinic during his 37 years in practice. He also designed the original BC Indian Hospital, numerous other local and state hospitals, the former Albuquerque National Banks, several public schools, and St.-Mark's-on-the-Mesa Episcopal Church, where he was a member since 1948. After Betty died, he also attended Montgomery Church of Christ with his son, Mark. Don served on the City Planning Commission, the NM State Board of Examiners for Architects, and the Albuquerque Symphony and Child Guidance Association boards, was a 50-year member of Kiwanis, an active member of State and National A.I.A., and served on committees for both Industrial and Hospital Architects. During his professional career, Don's honesty and integrity was his trademark. Don retired in 1985. In 2001, he received a Special Recognition Award and Lifetime Achievement Medal from the NM Chapter of A.I.A. He was also honored in 2002 by the local A.I.A. chapter with its first ever "Consistent Quality of Professional Practice" award. Don loved to hunt and fish, especially with his sons. He and Betty enjoyed traveling together, as well as many wonderful visits to (and from) his entire family. Don treasured two trips to England with family members to trace his parents' roots. Along with being acknowledged as a prominent local architect, Don will be primarily be remembered as the most generous, loving, and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family was always his first priority, constantly thanking them for the utmost joy they brought him. Don's every action portrayed his deep faith in God and reflected his strong values. He always put others first and never failed to acknowledge even the smallest act of kindness to him. He was an amazing man who had a profound and positive impact on all who knew and loved him. He will be greatly missed, but he has blessed and enriched our lives forever. We cannot adequately thank our brother, Mark, who gave up his career to become Dad's loving and devoted caregiver/companion for the past decade, enabling Dad to remain in the home he had designed and which held so many special memories. Memorial Services will be held at St. Mark's-on-the-Mesa, Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Albuquerque Christian Children's Home (5700 Winter Haven Dr NW, 87120) or All Faith's Receiving Home (1709 Moon St. NE, ABQ, 87122.)
