BURROUGHS -- George Edwin Burroughs, 85, died on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at home after a short illness; He was born in Tannersville, New York. He is a long time resident of New Mexico, which he considered his home. He received his Engineering Degree at the University of New Mexico. Ed Burroughs lived a full life and wore many hats: surveyor, civil engineer, construction superintendent and safety officer were his major ones. He also was the first voluntary fire chief in Tijeras. As a non-lawyer, he argued his case before the New Mexico Supreme Court and carried the day. He is survived by his long time companion Julia Ashley and his step son, Gary Henderson and wife, Ann. He had many friends; his kindness will long be remembered. He will be sorely missed. A memorial service celebrating Ed's life will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at French-Lomas Chapel at 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations are suggested to the Joy Junction Homeless Shelter, 4500 2nd St. SW, Albuquerque, NM, 87105. CHAVEZ -- David James Chavez, Jr., age 28, loving, son, father, brother, grandson and friend went home to be with our Lord and Savior, Friday April 22, 2011. David was born to David James, Sr. and MaryJane Chavez on May 23, 1982 in Denver, CO. David was a wonderful father who adored his children. David played football and was a great friend to those in his community. David was an active member of St. Anne Catholic Church and served our Lord the best he could. David always wanted to help and would talk to anyone in need of a kind ear. He enjoyed spending time at the lake, fishing, boating, skiing, and spending time with his family. David is survived by his loving parents David and MaryJane Chavez; one sister Amanda Nicole; one brother Daniel Ermilio; girlfriend Francine Infante and their precious children David James Chavez III and Rosalinda Princess Chavez; his maternal grandparents Alfred and Ramona Chavez; and many other family and friends. David was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Lorenzo and Blasita Chavez; his maternal grandfather Ermilo Chavez; and maternal great-grandmother Ida Vallejos. David will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. CHAVEZ -- Evangeline (Vangie) Chavez died from cancer on April 23, 2011 in Albuquerque, NM. She was preceded in death by her husband, (Ret.) New Mexico State Police Deputy Chief Tranquilino (TJ) Chavez in 1994; son Errol J. Chavez on January 23, 2011. She is survived by daughter, Loretta Chavez Johnson and husband U.S. District Judge William P. (Chip) Johnson; son Daniel (Lee-Roy) Chavez; grandchildren, Scott Henry, Jennifer Henry, Laura Johnson, Paul Johnson, Damian Chavez. Manuel Chavez and fiancee Nicole Robbins, Lisa Day and husband Jerrod Day, Duane Chavez and wife Jessyca Franco-Chavez, Dustin Chavez and wife Karla Radosevich-Chavez, Ericka Chavez and boyfriend Mario Carbajal; great-grandchildren, Patrick Day, Samantha Day, Kara Day, Kadence Chavez, Kendall Chavez and Travis (Chavez) Blagg; Sister, Mela Rimbert; and numerous other family members. She was born December 28, 1922 in Mora, NM to Damian and Adelia Lujan. Vangie attended the Mora Catholic schools with the Sisters of Loretto and graduated in 1943. She was a devout Catholic, sang in the choir and belonged to the Sodality of Blessed Virgin Mary. Her siblings include Mela Rimbert, Nena Ortega, Lourdes Trujillo, William Lujan and Eligio Lujan. During World War II, Vangie worked at the Douglas Aircraft Company as a "Rosie the Riveter" on the A-26, B-17 and C-47 airplanes as a machinist installing bolts on the wings. She also worked at the Mora County Clerk's Office, University of California, New Mexico State Legislature, State Treasurer's Office, State Land Office and Cosmetology Board. Vangie was a successful businesswoman from 1960 to 1971 in Espanola, NM. She spent most of her years in Mora, Espanola, Santa Fe and Albuquerque, NM. She and her husband TJ retired in Albuquerque in 1990. Most recently she lived at the Village at Alameda in Albuquerque. Vangie enjoyed spending time with her family at reunions in Mora and traveling all over Europe. She also enjoyed her birds Lucy and Fernando, cat Figaro and her garden. She loved her caregivers Liz Ramirez, Dora Dody and Rebecca Kunkle and close family friends Cynthia Leyba and Consuelo Chavez. The family would like to thank the Village at Alameda Assisted Living, Hospice of the Sandias and her caregivers for all their help during Vangie's illness. CLEMMER -- Martha Jean Clemmer, beloved mother peacefully passed away in her home of 37 years on April 18, 2011. Born July 25, 1925 in Independence, MO. she has resided in New Mexico since 1955. She is survived by daughter Sheryl; sons Phillip and Greg; and granddaughter Cathy. Martha loved all animals, but especially dear to her was her cocker spaniel Honey and Trixie her cat. Other interests included enjoying the family's horses race and supporting the Lobos. A closed family memorial follows.

COATS -- Alice Gibbs Coats, 83, of Belen, died in Albuquerque on April 16, 2011, after a short illness. She was the seventh of eight children of Katherine and Charles Gibbs of Las Cruces. She is survived by her husband David Coats; daughter, Yvonne Coats; and former husband, Frank Williams. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Solon Coats; and infant son, Charles Francis Williams. A Memorial Mass will be at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Tortugas at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 30, followed by a reception at Mesilla Park Heritage Clubhouse, 905 Conway, Las Cruces. FRANCHINI -- George "John" Franchini, 87, a lifetime citizen of Albuquerque, a successful businessman, and a World War II Navy veteran, passed away April 21, 2011. GRAY -- Margaret Ann (Peggy) Hirsch Gray, 66, passed away April 20, 2011 in Albuquerque, NM. She was born July 17, 1944 in Oklahoma City to Stanley H. and Betty (Tuholske) Hirsch. She graduated from Harding High School and attended the University of Oklahoma. Peggy was a happy, positive person and enjoyed the simple things in life. She loved animals and she also loved to write. Peggy is survived by her daughter Meka and grandchildren, of Florida; step-mother Mollie (Burnett) Hirsch; uncle Fred H. Young, Jr.; step-sister Sherry (Burnett) Bennett; cousins Kay (Young) Davis and Stephen F. HANCKEL -- Ruth Thompson Hanckel (1951-2011) died suddenly of a broken heart two years after her beloved partner, Ellen Reavis, passed. She is survived by her sister Frances Hanckel of Portland, Oregon; her cats Harold and Maude and many friends. Ruth had a delightful wit and unsurpassed organizational skills. She enjoyed playing bridge, poker, writing short stories, travelling, margaritas and above all, hearing or telling a funny story. "We are not here for a long time. We are here for a good time." HOWARD -- Normalee "Peggy" Howard, 72, loving and devoted, wife, mom, nana, sister, and friend, born December 3, 1938 in Illinois, passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2011 surrounded by family. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Glen Howard; three children, Karen Kuebler and husband Randy, Annette Hartline and husband Dave, and Robert Howard and wife Lynne; five grandchildren, Eric Kuebler and wife Leticia, Lisa Kuebler, Judy Hartline, Kyle Hartline, and John Howard and wife Kendra; three great-grandchildren, Lucas, Samantha, and Makayla; sister, Judy Reich; nieces, Christine Card and Linda Wegmiller along with numerous extended family members and friends. Norma graduated from Valley High School in 1956 and married the love of her life, Glen, later that year. Together they raised their family in Albuquerque where they still reside. She and Glen enjoyed spending the winter months at their home in Brownsville, TX. Following her 45th high school reunion she and a group of women, who called themselves "The Valley Girls" , enjoyed a monthly luncheon where they could spend time catching up with each other. Her greatest love in life was always her family. She will always be remembered as mom, nana, and a loving sister. KOLB -- Mildred "Becky" Kolb, a resident of Albuquerque since 1951, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 24, 2011 at 1:05 a.m., at the age of 102. Becky was born on a farm in Mason City, Illinois, on November 30, 1908, to John and Jennie Elmore. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Kolb; brother, Ralph C. Elmore; sisters, Margaret Schuppe of Springfield, Illinois, and Dorothy Charles of Albuquerque. Becky was a long time member of Central United Methodist Church, Chapter L, P.E.O., Eastern Star, The Masonic Widows, Honored Ladies, a Life Member of the Daughters of the Nile, Member of United Methodist Women, and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Lew Wallace Chapter, since 1943. Becky worked for the Central Illinois Public Service Company as a bookkeeper. She taught school in Illinois and later in the Panama Canal Zone. She attended Purdue University and graduated from Lincoln College with a BS Degree. Becky was an avid bridge player and loved the gameeven teaching others the game of bridge. She also loved to entertain, was an accomplished cook, and traveled all over the world. To everyone who knew Becky, she was an inspiration and a joy - a beautiful lady. Becky loved life and lived it to the fullest. Though Becky had no children of her own, she claimed many of her family friends as her "adopted" children. KUTZIN -- Gutte Love Kutzin died April 18, 2011 in Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, George Kutzin. Before 1979, when she moved to Albuquerque, they resided in Port Chester, N.Y. and there owned and operated a fine wine and liquor shop. Gutte was an active volunteer and was a Life Member of Hadassah. She was always there to help: she tried to live up to her name - "good love". Survivors include her son, Martin Howard and wife Sandra; daughter, Marcia Muller and husband James; grandchildren Scott and Lonny Muller, and Stacey Howard and Darin McCollum. She was laid to rest next to her husband, George, on April 21, 2011 in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery in Glendale, NY. Contributions made to Albuquerque Hadassah in her memory would be appreciated.

LASSAHN -- LaVohn Lassahn, 63, passed away on April 17th 2011, at her home in Albuquerque, New Mexico from a hidden battle with cancer. LaVohn's surviving relations are: her sister, Lorinda Sue Miller; her nephew and his wife, Mathew and Heather Miller, and their children William and Makayla. LaVohn was born in Mason City, Iowa. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1966, and achieved a Masters degree from the University of Houston. In the seventies she was in the Army where she rose to the rank of Sergeant. When LaVohn retired in 2009 she was the Technical Director for the United Blood Service, Albuquerque branch. Recently she had volunteered her time with Albuquerque Oasis. She was a woman who had many interests, from skiing to a wide range of arts and crafts. A remembrance service will be held at Marriot Courtyard, 5151 Journal Center Boulevard, Albuquerque, NM 87109 on April 30th from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. LOPEZ -- Michael Rene Lopez, 34, father, husband, son, brother, friend and executive of COMPA Industries, Inc., passed away in the early morning of April 11, 2011. He was born July 15, 1976, in Anaheim, Calif. He attended and graduated from St. Anthony Claret Elementary, Mater Dei High School and the University of New Mexico. At Mater Dei High School, he accomplished academic excellence graduating with a 4.0+ GPA, served as ASB president and as a captain of the football team. He received several offers to attend Ivy League Universities, but chose to attend the University of California at San Diego. Upon the death of his father in 1996, he transferred to the University of New Mexico to support his mother and the family business, COMPA. After graduating from the University of New Mexico with a B.S. in civil engineering, he went to work for Bechtel Nevada in Las Vegas. He enjoyed great early career success supporting multiple programs that serviced various three letter government agencies, in particularly one group who were the first to respond and spend several months in the cleanup of 2001 9/11 World Trade Center terrorist attacks. After a successful period at Bechtel Nevada, Michael rejoined COMPA as an executive in 2004. He expanded his career by achieving his PMP and obtaining MBA from the Anderson School at UNM. Although he supported the company as an officer in various capacities, he worked directly on specific contracts, notably the Second Line of Defense program at the Department of Energy in Washington, D.C. and the Clark County Office of Emergency Management and Clark County School District in Las Vegas. Michael was an integral part in obtaining, implementing, and servicing COMPA's biggest multi-million dollar contract at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He was a loving father, devoted husband, loyal son, brother and best of friends to many of us. His energy and optimism was contagious, making you feel comfortable and creating an immediate sense of familiarity that would last the visit and much more. He loved to give others his unique sense of humor and made people laugh. He opened his house and is heart to everyone, willing to counsel and support anyone's dreams and endeavors he came into contact with. He loved to mentor and give to others with his time, resources, and soul. He gave to his own detriment many times. He will be greatly missed, but also greatly remembered. He was preceded in death by his father, Rene Laform Lopez, in 1996. He is survived by his daughter, Mahina Emma; his wife, Tasha Ann Haunani; his mother, Edna; mother-in-law, Taylor; his four brothers, David, Daniel and his wife Shelly, Armando and his wife Alethea, and Samuel; his brother-in-law, Kekona and his wife, Rie; his seven nephews, Luke, Alec, Aisaak, Aidan, Jake, Alexander and Jesiah; and his four nieces, Shelby, Tatum, Paige and Amber. MCCANTS -- James "Jim" F. McCants, 86, passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2011. Jim was born on February 2, 1925 in Mayfield, KS. The family moved to Estancia, NM in 1930. During WWII he joined the Navy and became a Gunner's Mate. While on leave in Florida he met Sarah "Addie" Page and the couple married on Sept. 7, 1944. In 1959, they moved to Albuquerque, NM with their three sons, Herb, Don, and Jay McCants. After Jim retired in 1978 from Sandia/Kirtland AFB working in underground communication/maintenance; Jim and Addie moved to Hillsboro, NM. Services will be held Saturday, April 30, 2011 @ 10:00 a.m. at the Kirikos Family Funeral Home Chapel, 303 N. Cedar St, T or C, NM.

ORTEGA -- Jerry S. Ortega, 58, beloved son, brother, uncle, and cousin passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2011. Jerry was a pure and generous soul who always took time to visit with anyone. He truly delighted in buying gifts or paying for meals. Jerry excelled in sports at Holy Ghost, Van Buren, St. Pius High School, and was faithful to daily exercise. Jerry loved the Lord and was able to attend daily Mass for many years. He lived his faith and was an inspiration to so many. Jerry is now with Max, his dad, and is survived by his mother, Margie; sisters, Lydia Terrazas and husband, James, Mary Frances O. Sanchez; brothers, Robert Ortega and wife, Johnnina, Nicholas Ortega; godfather, Fred Bachicha; special buddy, Izzy; and many aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. PEREZ -- Josefita Perez., 91, loving mother, grandmother, and friend went home to be with our Lord and Savior, Monday April 25, 2011. Josefita was born on January 31, 1920 in Clyde, NM. Josefita enjoyed cooking and making tortillas for her family, she always was sure to leave enough on her plate to share her with her boys. She enjoyed watching game shows on T.V., reading the newspaper, attending Church at Sacred Heart, and she couldn't pass a penny without picking it up. Josefita loved her family and took a great pride in taking care of them. Josefita is survived by her loving children, Rosie Segura and husband Tony, Mary V. Alderete and husband David, Dolores Barreras and husband Ray, Erlinda Perez and Mark Molina, Maggie Castillo and husband Eddie, Bernadette Perez and Mike Martinez, Avelino Perez, Nora Perez, Antonio Perez and Robert Perez; 16 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 28 great-great grandchildren; and many other family and friends. Josefita was preceded in death by her parents, Romaldo and Petra (Romero) Peralta; her beloved husband Camilo Perez of 48 years; one son Camilo Perez, Jr.; daughters Barbara and Juanita Perez; grandchildren Elizabeth Moya, Johnny Moya, and Edward Alderete; great-granddaughter Alicia Dimas; sisters Isabel P. Salas and Cruzita Chavez; and one brother Salvador Peralta. Josefita will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. SHEPHERD -- Barbara Courville Shepherd, 76, beloved wife, mother and grandmother passed away Monday, April 11, 2011. Barbara was preceded in death by her sister, Audrey Ryan on February 1, 2011. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, James W. Shepherd; three sons, Duane, Gregory and Robert Shepherd; granddaughters, Megan Angelov, Abigail Shepherd; and grandson, Benjamin Shepherd; nieces, Kellie Watts and her husband Ian and their daughters, Cassandra and Rhiannan, Patti Birge and her husband, Scotty and their daughter Lindsay; nephew, Michael Ryan and his wife, Elexis and their son Jimmer. Barbara was an avid reader, quilter and loved to fish and camp with the family. She worked as a legal secretary in several law firms over the years and accumulated many life long friends. She was active in her church and served on the Missions Outreach Program until her health declined. Her friends and family will remember her for her generosity, grace and humor. The family wishes to thank her caregivers who have loved and cared for her over the years. SPURLOCK -- Edward G. Spurlock, 73, a resident of Albuquerque, NM since 1983 died April, 17, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Alicia Spurlock; daughter, Tara Spurlock Hanson and husband Kevan Hanson; two step-grandsons, Keith and Richard Hanson; sisters, Mary Frances Taylor, Wilma Howie, and Virginia Cooper. Ed served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict, Vietnam Era and Peacetime. He retired after thirty five years Military and Civil Service from Kirtland AFB, Albuquerque, NM. We will miss him forever. Ed was a love of all animals and leaves behind cats, Tiger Woods, Tippy, Tina, Aretha, Chico and Shadow. Cremation has taken place. WRIGHT -- Jesse D. Wright Jr, (Jess), 85 of Albuquerque passed away April 24, 2011 at UNM Medical Center in Albuquerque after a short illness. Jess was born February 6, 1926 in Nettleton, Missouri and had been a resident of Albuquerque for over 60 years. Jess graduated from Hamilton High School in Hamilton, Missouri in 1944 and enlisted in the US Army Air Forces as an Aviation Cadet. At the end of World War II he was awaiting flight training and was discharged due to the end of hostilities. On his return to Missouri, Jess attended the Central Radio School in Kansas City and operated the Hamilton Radio shop until late 1948. During this time he attended Emery flying school and learned to fly. Jess was employed by Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, Shreveport, Louisiana and Oxnard, California from 1948 until his retirement in 1981. He was married to Lucia Faye Lewis in 1953 and divorced in 1960. He never remarried, but was a devoted single father. Jess was an avid Amateur Radio Operator, call sign W5QDW and member of numerous radio clubs and organizations. Aviation was a central part of Jess' life, and he earned Commercial and Instrument flight ratings while owning and operating several light aircraft. He also built and flew radio controlled model aircraft and was one of the founding members of the Albuquerque Radio Control Club and a member of the One Eighth Air Force (OEAF). Jess was a Life Colonel in the Commemorative Air Force, Lobo Wing. After retirement Jess took up motorcycling and was an active member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association and The RETREADS Motorcycle Club. Jess is survived by his son Randall L. Wright of Newport, Maine; his son's wife, Betty; his granddaughters, Catherine L. Wright of Bangor, Maine and Christine L. Wright of Newport, Maine; his sister, Ruby Nicholson of Liberty, Missouri; many nieces and nephews; and many good friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Jesse and Mamie Wright; his adopted son, Steven Charles Sullivan; his sisters Effie Mae, Mildred, Luana, Mary Jo, Helen, Ellen, and Margie; and his brother Johnny. Cremation has taken place and no local services are planned. Burial will take place at Highland Cemetery in Hamilton at a future date.
