HIGGINS -- Theresa Ruth Hutchens-Higgins, 41, of Albuquerque, died February 16, 2011, at her home in the North Valley. Theresa, known by her family and friends as Teri, was born March 10, 1969 in Alamosa, Colorado, to Merle and Janice (Mitchell) Hutchens. The family moved from Colorado to Albuquerque's North Valley in 1973, where she made her home even after marriage, living near the family home. Teri attended Evangel Temple Academy and Cibola High School in Albuquerque where she was a member of the Cibola Cougar Marching Band. As a young girl, she enjoyed spending summers with her grandparents in East Central Texas, and traveling with her grandpa to different Churches of God, where he would preach and sometimes she would sing. On one of those summer trips, her grandpa held a baptismal service at an old cow tank. Teri had been waiting until then so her grandpa could baptize her. We always laughed when we would recall she had to remind him, as he was leading her deeper and deeper into the water, that she was only so tall, and the water was already over her chin. Teri enjoyed making candles, and several family members were blessed with some of her creations. In 2004, when her grandpa was living with her mother next door to her home and began to require help, Teri took on the responsibility of caring for him, preparing his favorite meals and playing cards for hours on end. She loved to cook favorite meals for her two sons, watch movies with them, and has been known to crawl out from under a pickup covered in grease and grime as she helped her husband, John, work on one of their trucks. Teri is survived by her husband, John Higgins of the home; sons James Elvin O. Hutchens and Corey Lee Walker of Albuquerque; parents, Merle Hutchens of Peralta and Janice Hutchens of Albuquerque; brothers James Hutchens and wife Jamin of Bosque Farms and Joey Hutchens and fiancee Jessica Roupas of Albuquerque. Teri was daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend to many. She will be missed most dearly. Services for Teri will be on Monday, February 21, 2011, Friends will be most welcome to come from 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., with services beginning at 2:00 p.m., at Daniels Family Funeral Services, Wyoming Chapel. Interment will follow at Sandia Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, TN.
