GRANT -- Bertha L., 95, of Albuquerque, NM, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior, on Friday, December 17, 2010, at her home. Bertha was born January 18, 1915, in Trenton, NJ, to Joseph Lester and Alice Wilkinson. She was preceded in death by her parents, former husband, and her only son, Alan S. Grant, who died as the result of an accident in Albuquerque, in May 1989--caused by a drunk driver--with 13 DWIs on his record. The loss of Alan created an empty space in Bertha's life, as they were very close, and did so many things together. Bertha occasionally attended church at Hoffman Town Baptist Church. Bertha moved to Los Alamos in 1963 from Trenton, going to work for LANL, where she worked for four years, before moving to Albuquerque, in 1967, transferring to SNLA, from where she retired in Jan 1984. She enjoyed traveling with her friends, and getting together with her co-workers on a regular basis from SNLA--which usually included getting together at the many ABQ local restaurants for lunches--and especially desserts. Her more frequent friends included, but not limited to: Alice White, Virginia DeWitt, Kay Hoffman (for extensive card playing sessions), and Dorothee Senich. Berthas's wonderful home/yard in the NE Heights was getting to be a little much for her to keep up, so she opted to move into the Bear Canyon Estates Retirement Residences. Here she enjoyed the views of the Sandia Mountains to the East, and views of ABQ to the South--from her two covered balconies--from the 3rd floor of her building--picking it out during the construction stage of the facility. It was a beautiful/picturesque location. She enjoyed this lifestyle for about 20 yrs. The necessity of having a little more help, prompted Bertha to move into the Assisted Living area of Fairwinds, Rio Rancho in Dec 2009. Daniels Family Funeral Services will be in charge of the funeral arrangements, and entombment will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, next to her son, Alan Grant. A Memorial Service, conducted by Don Hendricks, Lay Leader of the Dolores, CO UMC will tentatively be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 21, 2010, at 7999 Wyoming Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM. Please verify the time with Daniels Funeral Services at 505.821.0010. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in memory of Bertha Grant, to Civitan International, PO Box 130744, Birmingham, AL 35213-9744--of which Alan was a long time member.

MATHEWS -- Jane Meredith Toney Mathews, age 94, died peacefully on December 12, 2010 as a result of a brief illness. She was born in Piedmont, Missouri to William Ashby Toney and Jeanette Bunyard Toney on St. Patrick's Day 1916. Her Father, a pharmacist, who had contracted tuberculosis as the result of a World War I gas attack had to move the family in 1932 to the dryer climes of Albuquerque, New Mexico in order to improve his health. There Jane finished high school and studied art at the University of New Mexico, a love that continued her entire life. While visiting relatives in Piedmont she met a young engineer from Starkville, Mississippi who was working on Wappapello Dam for the U S Army Corps of Engineers. On September 7, 1937 she married Arther Lee Mathews at St. Johns Episcopal Cathedral in Albuquerque. For the nine years before their eldest son was born the couple moved over 120 times to various Corps project sites in the early years of Arther Lee's engineering career with the Soils Division of Waterways Experiment Station. They finally settled in Vicksburg to raise a family, where they remained for 36 years. Jane was active in many civic and cultural organizations, to include Gold in the Hills, the Miss Mississippi Pageant and the Pink Ladies at Mercy Hospital. She taught art for several years at All Saints Episcopal College and substituted with the Vicksburg public schools and Hinds Community College for many years. She enjoyed playing bridge, hosting parties for her friends, and traveling to many foreign countries. Jane was always ready to try a new adventure and had the courage to pursue many interests and bring encouragement to those around her. Some were surprised that such a refined lady could also climb mountains in New Mexico and shoot a rifle with great accuracy. After her husband's retirement from the Corps, consulting jobs with McClelland Engineers took them on new travels over the U S for ten years until Jane and Arther Lee moved back to Albuquerque where her mother lived along with many old friends. She remained there for 24 years before declining health required her move back to Vicksburg where her son William could care for her. Jane was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years in 1996. Jane is survived by her sons, Toney Adams Mathews, P.E. of Charlotte, NC (wife Virginia Hinton Mathews) and William Lee Mathews, J.D. of Vicksburg, MS (wife Elizabeth Hunter Mathews and her son Henry Hunter and daughter-in-law Liz); She has one grandson, David Charles Shroyer; and one great-grand-daughter, Kailyn Dail Shroyer, both of Charlotte, NC. Jane had a lifelong love of music, which was especially meaningful to her in her latter years. She was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and memorials may be made to them at 900 South St., Vicksburg, Ms. 39180 or to a symphony orchestra of the donor's choice. A memorial service will be held at the church Saturday, February 5, 2011 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour before the service.

O'NEAL -- Lorraine Super O'Neal, 89, died at home on 12/11/2010, a date not surprising given her love of numbers and symmetry! She is survived by daughter Margaret of Albuquerque; and sister Adele Genualdi of San Antonio, Texas. Lorraine was born into a Polish neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. Her father was a pharmacist, and the family lived above the drugstore. Her earliest joys were rollerskating the city streets and organizing kids' parades for any and all occasions! And sneaking chocolate bars from behind the drugstore candy counter. She graduated from Lourdes High School and Mundelein College, monumental tasks since she was also caring for her mother who was mentally ill. In her early 30s she and Adele moved to Washington, D.C., where she married Jack O'Neal. She happily became stepmom to Jack's two little boys, Sam and Jesse. Soon a daughter, Margaret came along. Jack was plagued by alcoholism and the marriage did not survive. After some years in northern New Jersey and back in Illinois, in 1973 Lorraine followed her heart (and Adele) to Albuquerque. (Many thanks to the Genualdi family for their support during a difficult transition.) Lorraine loved New Mexico and immediately appreciated its beauty. For as long as she was able, she spent every summer evening outside (usually with an ice cream cone) watching the sky well into darkness. She spent her professional career as an office manager. She loved the challenges of reaching goals and inspiring others to be their best. She earned her MBA at 62 and retired from Lovelace Medical Center two years later. She continued to work, as an independent consultant for several area hospitals. At 80, she concluded her working life at the office of Four Hills Mobile Home Park where she lived for 34 years. In retirement, she acted on a passion for literacy by volunteering as a reading tutor at Dolores Gonzales, Cochiti, and Zia elementary schools. She became active in St. Bernadette's Altar-Rosary Society, eagerly anticipating the dessert table at potlucks! And she travelled. She spoke of having a Gypsy's soul. During her lifetime, she visited most of the U.S.; Canada; Mexico; Cuba, Haiti, and the Caribbean; Ecuador; China; the Middle East; Europe and Great Britain. Margaret thanks her mother for many years of unconditional love and the lesson of a lifetime: In the end, only kindness matters. All are invited to the Rosary at Riverside Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at 3:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial and a memorial get-together will be celebrated in early January.
