AKIN -- Jackson G. Akin died at the age of 91, in Albuquerque on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 after a short illness. Mr. Akin, the son of a Methodist Minister and a school teacher, was born in Lebanon, Kentucky on April 23, 1919. He graduated with highest honors from Washington and Lee University in 1940, and was awarded a scholarship to the Harvard Law School. After completing one and one half years at Harvard, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During the war years he was awarded a citation by the Secretary of the Navy for the rescue of a number of people in the Boston Cocoanut Grove fire. As Captain of a Pacific Aviation rescue ship, he and his crew received a commendation from the Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific for outstanding service. Mr. Akin returned to Harvard after the war and graduated in 1947. Upon graduation, he joined the firm of Rodey, Dickason, and Sloan, and later became it's fourth partner. Mr. Akin's many legal accomplishments include successfully arguing the oft-cited case "Aetna vs. The United States" before the Supreme Court of the United States, which established the right of an insurance company to sue the government under the Federal Tort Claims Act. In 1963 he drafted the Joint Medical-Legal Plan for screening malpractice cases, which was adopted by the State Bar Association and Medical Society. Mr. Akin was the managing director of the Rodey, Dickason, Sloan, Akin and Robb firm for many years. He was also the president of the Albuquerque Lawyers Club, Commissioner of the New Mexico State Bar, Albuquerque Academy Trustee, member of the Albuquerque, New Mexico and American Bar Associations. In 2009 Mr. Akin was inducted into The Roehl Circle of Honor for trial lawyers. He retired in 1987 but continued to be of counsel for many years. Mr. Akin is survived by his loving companion Katherine B. Hauth, of Rio Rancho; Emily Akin Sattler and husband, Don of Richmond, Texas; Stephan Akin and wife, Lyda of Dallas, Texas; Don Akin of Phoenix Arizona; Scott Akin and wife, Christine of Berkeley, California; and grandchildren, Hillary, Lauren, Madison, Olivia, Travis, Finnian and Jude; and nieces Christy West and Valerie Grobe. A memorial service for Mr. Akin will be held on Friday, December 3, 2010, 11:00 a.m., at Central United Methodist Church, 201 University Blvd. NE, followed by a reception at the Albuquerque Country Club. BRANDON -- Helen M. Brandon, 90, a resident of Rio Rancho, NM since 1982, was gently called by our Heavenly Father on November 28, 2010. Mrs. Brandon was born on September 8, 1920 to Allen Rowe and Doris (Fitch) Myers of Kinsman, OH. She was a member of Eastern Star, Kinsman United Methodist Church-Hope Circle, Bayview Literary Club, and High Desert United Methodist Church of Rio Rancho, NM. She was a resident of Fairwinds, formerly Acantilado Vista, of Rio Rancho, NM. She was an avid baker, enjoyed hot air ballooning, and enjoyed "cruising" the seas. Mrs. Brandon was preceded in death by her husband, George Gray Brandon; brother, Allen Myers; and sister, Carol Muir. She is survived by her four children: Stephanie Yund and husband, Bob, of Del Norte, CO, Eric Brandon and wife, Kathy, of Poway, CA, Chris Brandon and wife, Sue, of El Paso, TX and Denise Pelowitz and husband, Dave, of Los Alamos, NM; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; six nieces and nephews; and a host of people whose lives she has touched along the way. CHAVEZ -- Louis Timoteo Chavez passed away peacefully on Friday, November 5, 2010 at the age of 91 at his son's home in Corrales, NM and is now with his loving wife of 66 years Rose Frances King. He was born on his family's ranch in Agua Dulce northwest of Wagon Mound, NM on August 19, 1919. Lou was one of 14 children born to his parents Manuel Nicomedis Chavez and Maria Soledad Martinez. After a tragic accident when his father was killed on Christmas Eve 1926 his family moved to Albuquerque where he developed a passion for model airplanes with real engines and flew them on the West Mesa. He lettered in track and graduated from Albuquerque High School where he designed his senior class graduation ring. He joined the New Mexico National Guard transferred to the Army Air Corp and served in the China Burma India theater during WWII. After the war he attended UNM and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. After returning to Albuquerque and working at Sandia Labs he moved his family to San Diego, CA and worked in the aircraft industry until retirement when he and Rose moved back to Albuquerque. Lou was preceded in death by his father Manuel Nicomedis Chavez and mother Maria Soledad Martinez; his brothers Adolpho, Antonio, Arthur, Manuel, Benjamin, Jose Alfredo, Alfredo, and Filaberto; his sisters Soledad,Lilia,Cleofas and Salome. He is survived by his sister Delia Martinez; sister-in-law Sue King Chavez; his sons, Chuck and his wife Wiro Zuniga, Chris and his friend Tere; his grandsons, Chris and his friend Katie, Andre and his wife Christy; his granddaughters, Terre,Lenny and Michelle; his great-grandchildren Tori, Austin, Trevor, Taylor Rose, Wade Carlos and Nicolas; nieces and nephews, Carolyn and John Kirkpatrick, Connie and Richard Ewens and Marlene and Milo Simon; his very close extended family Manny, Lee, Ryan and Carolyn Orosco, Brenda Hollow; and many other family and friends. Lou was the 8th great-grandson of Pedro Gomez Duran y Chaves and great grand nephew of Antonio Jose Martinez, Padre Martinez of Taos. Rosary will be December 3, 2010 at 8:00 a.m., followed by Mass at St. Joseph's on the Rio Grande Catholic Church in Albuquerque. He will be enshrined with Rose at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m., December 3, 2010.

CHYNOWETH -- George Chynoweth (1923-2010) passed away Sunday, November 28, 2010, finally succumbing to his third bout with Lymphoma. Born October 17, 1923 to Phillips and Edith (Galvin) Chynoweth, George was raised in New York City and attended the Fieldston School. While a student at the University of Wisconsin, George was drafted into the Army Air Corps and served as a Radio Mechanical Operations Gunner in the South Pacific during World War II. George returned to the University of Wisconsin after the war to complete his degree in Chemical Engineering. He then went to work for the Hooker Chemical Company in Niagara Falls, New York, spending his entire 36-year working career at this company and its various successors. George married the love of his life, Marilyn Louise Bayes on March 8, 1952 in Niagara Falls, NY. Not wasting any time, the Chynoweth's proceeded to have four children over the next six years, plus a fifth (the little dividend) in 1965. George's rise up the Hooker Chemical corporate ladder kept the family on the move with residences in Lewiston, NY, Western Springs, IL, Buffalo, NY, Tarrytown, NY, La Grange, IL and Ridgewood, NJ. Along the way they accumulated numerous life-long friends. Upon retirement in 1985, George and Marilyn moved to Albuquerque, NM to live closer to their children. George was active in the Church of the Good Shepherd, Albuquerque Newcomers' Club, and the New MexiChords barbershop chorus. He loved tennis, gardening, singing, riding waves in Avalon, NJ, skiing (particularly after he turned 70 and it was free) and the New York Times. But most of all George loved family. He leaves a legacy of family dinners, sing-a-longs, ski weekends at Wolf Creek and summer vacations in Avalon, New Jersey. George was preceded in death by his brothers, Phillips, John and Bill, and is survived by his wife Marilyn; son Phil and his wife Kipp; daughter Gail and her husband Jim Bullard; son Paul and his wife Julie; son Jim and his wife Hilma all of Albuquerque; son Bob and his wife Marie of Fishers, IN; 13 grandchildren: Sean Chynoweth, Jeff Chynoweth and his wife Dani, Jessica Chynoweth, Ryan Pennington and his wife Heather, Monica Pennington, Rob Keedy, Lauren Bullard, Aren Chynoweth, Brianna Chynoweth, Will Chynoweth, Henry Chynoweth, Thomas Chynoweth, and Olivia Chynoweth; and two great-grandchildren, Syra and Louis; George also leaves a sister-in-law Shirley Dennis Chynoweth; cousin Mary Rhyme; and numerous nephews and nieces, along with innumerable friends and well wishers. He lived a full life that was admired by all who knew him and he will be greatly missed for his grace, humor and generosity of spirit. CLOKEY -- Betty J. Clokey born July 3, 1968 in Santa Fe, passed away November 21, 2010 she was 42. She was preceded by her mother Romalda Lucero; and brother John Paul Martinez. Survivors include her father Nick Cloakey; sisters, Christina, Teresa, Linda Velasio, Esparanza Rael and Carmela Tapia; brothers Micheal Velasco; and children, Anthony, Bobby and Leandra Lovato. Betty was a great outgoing person. Everyone loved her. She had great friends and loving family members. She loved to dance and listen to oldies music. JONES -- Dr. Oakah L. Jones Jr. passed away peacefully November 23 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Oakah was born in Providence, Rhode Island on June 20, 1930 to Oakah L. Jones Sr. and Dorothy Wilson Jones and was raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He attended the University of Tulsa, the University of Arkansas and was a U.S. Naval Academy graduate in 1953. He went on to serve 23 years in the U.S. Air Force including 13 years at the Air Force Academy. Oakah married Nancy Aline Andre. They had three children: Marcia Aline (Jones) Curtis (1954), Kathleen Ann Jones (1958), and Christopher Andre Jones (1961). He obtained his Masters and Ph.D. degrees in history at the University of Oklahoma with specialties in Latin American and Southwestern history. He and his first wife Nancy divorced in July of 1977. Oakah married his high school sweetheart, Marjorie Blackburn, on January 1, 1983. They lived in Sevilla, Spain; Lafayette, Indiana; and San Antonio, Texas before retiring in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1994. They moved to Colorado Springs this past August. An accomplished author and professor, he published five books and numerous articles. He was bilingual in English and Spanish, and was a widely respected speaker. Oakah was a charter member of the Western History Association and served as a tour leader for study groups on trips to Peru, Bolivia, Costa Rica and Guatemala. He loved his family, sports and his dog Sandy. He was a devout member of his church. Oakah was a loving son, brother, husband, father, uncle and grandfather. He was a great mentor, friend and teacher. He will be dearly missed. Oakah was preceded in death by his parents; and his daughter Kathleen Ann Jones. He is survived by his wife Marjorie Jones; sister Judy Gallagher; daughter Marcia Curtis; son Chris Jones; stepsons, Craig and Grant Henderson and stepdaughter Lisa O'Harra; nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and ten grandchildren. He recently became a great-grandfather. Services will be held Saturday, December 4, 2010 with a visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., at Swan Law Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m., at Grace Episcopal Church in Colorado Springs. MCCUTCHEON -- Jacob P. McCutcheon, 88, a Rio Rancho resident since 1972, died Friday, November 26, 2010. Mr. McCutcheon is survived by sisters, Kathryn Rippin and Gloria Schultz both of Johnstown, PA; several nieces and nephews; and a very dear friend and his caregiver, Ernestina Britton of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha McCutcheon; a brother, John McCutcheon; sisters, Yola Black, Frances Firth, Audrey Gabriel, Ruth Howard and Festa Young. Mr. McCutcheon was retired from the US Air Force as a MSGT after 31 years service. He was a WWII, Korea and Vietnam veteran. He was a member of AF & AM in Florida and attended Rio Rancho Lodge after moving to the area. He was also a member of Scottish Rite and Ballut Abyud Shrine Temple in Albuquerque. PASSARIELLO -- Angelo "Gene" a long time resident of Albuquerque passed away, Monday, November 22, 2010. Gene was born in Connecticut, served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII. He moved to Albuquerque and raised a family. He retired after a long career with Frontier Ford. Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Alice. PAYNICH -- Albert G. Paynich, 92 year old, passed away peacefully at his home on November 24, 2010. A veteran of WWII, he proudly served on the European theater. Ever faithful, he was an active member of Fellowship Harvest Assembly of God, the American Legion and John Birch societies. Born to John and Louise Chopp Paynich, he was born near Calumet MI on April 23, 1918, and moved to Bisbee, AZ shortly before the war. He married Margaret Jones, a Bisbee native, during the war, and they had one son, Allan. After his wife died in 1963, he married Laurel Avery Diehl, of Bisbee. An electrician for 42 years in Phelps Dodge copper mines in Bisbee and Tyrone, NM, Albert retired to this area 17 years ago. He is survived by Laurel, Allan; and three step-daughters: Lucy Ann of NM, Marian Otis and Janet Powell of Phoenix. ROZZI -- John P. Rozzi Sr., "Johnny", 84, went home to be with our Lord and Savior on Sunday, November 28, 2010. Johnny was born June 24, 1926 and was a lifelong resident of Albuquerque's Old Town. Johnny served in the United States Navy. He attended Western College and received an Associates degree. Johnny retired from Korber Electric after 43 years of service. Johnny was a wonderful husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He always had plenty of candy on hand for his grandkids. Johnny loved and fed every stray cat in the neighborhood that found his home. Johnny was a faithful follower and member of San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church. Johnny is survived by his devoted wife Eloisa, of almost 61 years; sister Eve Frazee; his loving children Terri Maez and husband Jim of Albuquerque. John Jr. and wife Diana of California, Elaine Ortiz and husband Ruben of Albuquerque and Michael Rozzi of Albuquerque; six grandchildren, Jonathan, Joy, Jamie, Daniel, Valerie and Felicia; seven great-grandchildren, Adriana, Krisha, Lorena, Anthony, Johnny, Noah, Matthew and one on the way; and ten God-children. STELL -- Wayne W. Stell, Sr. passed away on November 24, 2010 in El Paso. He was 97. He served as an elder in the Church of Christ for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife Rachel; his son, Wayne Jr.; and his daughter Phyllis. He is survived by three daughters, Zoe Nelson, Janet Hall and Lisa Bishop.

TORRES -- Ferminia Torres 92, born in Las Nuetrias, NM, February 22, 1918 passed away on November 28, 2010. She is survived by her children, Stella Devine (Vincent) Gene and Melba Barreras; and her grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; one sister; and four brothers. Ferminia ws preceded in death by her husband Andres; and her son Larry. A rosary will be recited on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., at San Felipe de Neri Church, 2005 N Plaza St. NW. Mass will be on Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 10:00 a.m., at San Felipe de Neri Church interment will immediately follow at Mt. Cavalry Cemetery. Arrangements by Riverside Funeral Home.

TREADWELL -- Deborah Marie Treadwell (Deb), 49, long time resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, November 25, 2010. She is survived by her husband, Arthur (Rick) Treadwell; son, Derek Esquibel and wife, Lucilla; grandson, Dylan Esquibel; mother, Dolores Hance; and sister, Rachel Hance. Mrs. Treadwell was preceded in death by her father, Claude Hance and her brother, Eric Hance. Deb worked as a medical assistant in Albuquerque. YAZELL -- David Yazell, 87, resident of Albuquerque since 1963, passed away November 27, 2010 at home. He was born in Champlain, IL, October 16, 1923. He is survived by his wife of 20 years Madaline; one step-daughter Julie and husband Kelby Nowotny; one grandchild Alora; Two daughters: Melody Brashear and husband Warren of Gallup, NM, Lucinda Boddy and husband Terry of Mesa, AZ. by his previous marriage; four grandchildren: Kimblery and Jerry Higginson, Guy and Christa Morgan, Amanda and Brian Koopman, April Morgan and fiance Brian McCoy; and six great-grandchildren. David was preceded in death by his first wife Elizabeth; his dad; mother; and brother. He was in the Marines for ten years, then worked for the Santa Fe Railroad and MONY insurance and investments. He was active in church and community activities. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Ronald McDonald's House, 1011 Yale SE. Service will be held Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 10:00 a.m., at the LDS Haines Ward Chapel, 5709 Haines NE with visitation one hour prior to services.
