DUNLAP -- Rick M. Dunlap, a uniquely positive, energetic and courageous man, lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at the age of 60. Never one without the other, lovingly side-by-side, Rick and his beloved wife, best friend and soul mate, Debbie (always "Deb" to Rick) were married for 40 years while finding inspiration in each other in a rare and beautiful relationship. Born in Seattle, WA, his family moved to Albuquerque when Rick was an infant. He loved to work and started doing so at the age of 14. With Rick's entrepreneurial spirit and the desire to own their own business, Rick and Debbie started Merit Insulation, Inc. in 1983 with a dream, willingness to work hard, competitive spirit, and a small loan only adequate for one pick-up truck and one employee. Rising to work early each morning and returning late at night, Rick built Merit Insulation into the largest mechanical insulation company in New Mexico. Generous to a fault, Rick treated his employees as family and was proud of how many families the business was able to support. Rick frequently remarked, "Life is good," always living each day to its fullest while never complaining. No matter how he felt he showed a spirit for life, caring and love, of strength and commitment mixed with a wonderful sense of humor, a great laugh and a warm smile. In addition to loving to build the business, his other passions included reading, traveling, gardening, gourmet cooking, home improvement projects, volunteering, and golfing at the Albuquerque Country Club and Pendaries Village. Rick served as the President of many construction related organizations and was currently a Board Member for the Western Insulation Contractors Association and a Trustee for the Mechanical Contractors Workers Compensation Fund. Other survivors include his treasured daughters, Dana Schaefer of Albuquerque, and Kim Milliman and her husband, Robert of Houston, Texas. He loved and doted upon his grandchildren, Savannah Schaefer and Mason Milliman. Other survivors include in-laws, Larry and Nedra Gordon of Albuquerque, who thought of Rick as "one of their own sons"; brothers-in-law, Gary Gordon and wife Terri and their children, Celine and Bryce, of Albuquerque and Kent Gordon and wife, Elli and their daughter, Bianca, of Santa Rosa, CA; brother, Les Riedel and wife, Nancy of Seattle, WA; sisters, Debbi Barnes and husband, Bill of Sacramento, CA and Cathi Judkins and husband, Lee of Newton Grove, NC. Debbie expresses her loving appreciation to the scores of friends who have supported her during the recent difficult months. Celebration of a Wonderful, Optimistic, and Generous Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the UNM Cancer Center Development Office, MSC07 4025, 1 University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM 87131-0001 (hope@salud.unm.edu) or to the Nancy Floyd Haworth Foundation, 7410 Montgomery NE, Suite 204, Albuquerque, NM 87109. GAY -- Patrick Ryan Gay entered this world on February 6, 1977 to proud parents, Vurgel and Ruby Gay. Patrick was the youngest of three boys. Patrick, who we all called Pat, was a young man diagnosed with the debilitating disease called Multiple Sclerosis in 2002. Since then Pat has had many issues with this disease. Although Pat has had many ups and downs throughout the last couple of years, he always kept a smile on his face so that his friends and family did not worry about him. Sadly, Saturday, November 6, 2010 our beloved son, brother, uncle and friend passed away in his sleep due to complications with Multiple Sclerosis. Pat was a very talented artist. He created many album covers and flyers for his older brothers bands. He loved music, his video games, skateboarding but most of all his family. Pat was a gentle soul with a great big heart. Everyone who knew Pat will greatly miss his smile, laugh and excellent sense of humor. Those of us, who knew him well, knew that his sense of humor was sometimes warped but that's what made Pat, Pat. Pat was loved by many. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruby and is survived by his father, Vurgel; his brother, Wade and wife Cecilia; his brother, Tim and longtime girlfriend Nicole; his nephews, Shaun, Ian and Skylar and step niece Chloe, along with many other family members as well as a long list of friends who Pat considered very dear and like family. MADRID -- Charles Madrid Jr., born November 23, 1919, in Las Cruces, New Mexico passed away peacefully and in the presence of his loving family on November 8, 2010, at the age of 90. Charlie was the eldest son of a founding family of Dona Ana and Las Cruces. His father was Charles Madrid Sr., an American Indian leader, a banker, farmer and rancher in the Mesilla Valley. His mother was the beautiful Irish, Jennie Barncastle of Dona Ana. She was a descendant of Union Soldier John D. Barncastle, who came to New Mexico in the California Column during the Civil War. These soldiers were some of the first non-native, non-Hispanic settlers of the Mesilla Valley. Charlie's beautiful, devoted wife of 70 years is Virginia (Mabel) Madrid, daughter of John Fitch and Juanita Triviz. Like his father, Charlie was a leader of the Piro-Manso-Tiwa Tribe, Pueblo of San Juan de Guadalupe and served as Tribal Chairman for over twenty years and was instrumental in tracing our tribal history in this region back to the 1400's. As a young man, Charlie was often seen riding his horse between Las Cruces and Dona Ana where he visited his Barncastle cousins and courted the love of his life, Mabel Fitch. Charlie joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 16 where he proudly served in the South Pacific theatre during World War II. Thereafter, he also served in the U.S. Army. While in the military, Charlie was a competitive boxer. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from NMSU in 1956. This included the study of animal science. He subsequently worked for and retired from the management of a dairy for the U.S. Dept. of Justice. Charlie enjoyed life fully and had many interests. He cultivated an organic fruit and pecan orchard in San Isidro, North of Las Cruces. He had a life-long love of nature, the outdoors, horticulture, the animal kingdom and astronomy. As a master gardener, he grafted and grew many varieties of grapes, peaches, apricots, figs, and pomegranates and was proud of his homemade wine. As a beekeeper he was featured in "The Mother Earth News" magazine and spent many years surrounded by his magnificent chickens and roosters that greeted him each dawn. Charlie was an expert hunter who took the time to teach his sons and nephews hunting skills such as shooting, tracking, and bow hunting on horseback. He taught many others hunting skills including camouflage, portage, marksmanship, and Indian hunting rituals and traditions. Charlie was very well read and especially interested and knowledgeable about American Indian history and civil rights for all people. This was a passion that he shared with his children and all who knew him. Charlie will be remembered for his forthrightness, keen sense of humor and the mischievous twinkle in his beautiful green eyes. He will also be remembered by his family and friends for his wisdom, insight and vitality.
