ASHMAN -- Robert L. Ashman, Jr., age 87, passed away on August 18, 2010. Robert proudly served as a Boatswain with the Merchant Marines during WWII and was the former President of the Albuquerque Chapter of the U.S. Merchant Marines. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth; sons, Rob and wife Nancy and Mark and wife Amy, Ashman; grandchildren, Kelly and husband Stephen Smith, Valerie and husband David Gorm, Leigh Ashman and Peter and wife Miranda Ashman and great granddaughter, Addison Gorm. He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Ashman. A memorial service will be held 2pm Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at Glory Christian Fellowship, 2417 Wyoming Blvd NE. BABINEC -- Lillian Rita Babinec, age 86 of Albuquerque, passed away on August 18, 2010 at Wellesley Care Home. Born on September 6, 1923 in Webster, Massachusetts to Robert and Eva Lubecki Prendergast, she received her schooling there and in New Jersey. During World War II, she worked for the war effort in an airfield in New York, retrieving the weather reports and delivering them to pilots. Many young pilots received their early training at this facility. Her future husband, George Babinec, came to take pilot training after being discharged from the Army and their love began. They were married in 1946 and had two sons, Richard and Robert. Mr. Babinec died in 1967, leaving Lillian with one teenage son at home. She spent many years working for J.C. Penney in the drapery department. In 1991 she moved to Albuquerque, and until her illness six years ago, was an active member of the Writer's Class at Highland Senior Center where she became a prolific Poetry Writer. Adults as well as children have enjoyed her funny and inspirational poems over the years. Lillian is survived by her sons, Richard of Albuquerque, and Robert, of New York; brother, Michael Prendegrast of Albuquerque; and godchild, Heidi Nale of New York. She will be greatly missed by the members of the Writer's class and close friends, Mr. and Mrs. Hesse of New York and local friends, Ms. Holmer, Ms. Cordova, Ms. Hoppe and Ms. Czerner. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held at Long Island National Cemetery, Long Island, NY, where her ashes will be buried with her husband, Rev. Martin Hale, Officiant. Special thanks to Sandra Green, Michelle Reeves and staff as well as Hospice de la Luz, who have carred for Lillian during her last years. BANTON -- Nedra S. Banton, age 73, passed peacefully in the presence of family on August 19, 2010. She is survived by her children, Kytson Whitmore of Houston, Clifford Banton of Albuquerque, Kelly Banton of Chicago, Micah Hahn of Los Angeles and Kaysie Banton and her husband Robert Hampton of Minneapolis; grandchildren, David DiVito, Jr., Marlow and Ayden Hampton and Robyn Hahn; siblings Cleo and her husband Gerry Wilborn, George (Robert Waylan) and his wife Deli Wakefield and Velva and husband Jean Rancourt. She was preceded in death by her two husbands. She was a member of St. Chad's Episcopal Church where she enjoyed singing with the choir. Nedra loved the outdoors, good friends, good food and good wine - and even better, she loved them all together. GALLEGOS -- Carrie Gallegos, 52, went to be with our Lord Tuesday August 3, 2010. She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Dennis Garcia and Bernie Garcia. Carrie is survived by her husband of 30 years Mike Gallegos of Rio Rancho; son, Michael Garcia and wife Renee of Albuquerque; daughters, Marie Gutierrez, Angelique Manriquez of Albuquerque, and Julia Gallegos of Albuquerque; sister-in-law, Kathy Garcia; six grandchildren; and two nieces. KAYS -- JAMES L. - James Leon Kays passed away peacefully at age 73 on August 9, 2010 in Albuquerque, NM with Linda, his devoted wife of 50 years, by his side. Born on August 25, 1936 in Louisville, KY, Jim courageously battled multiple system atrophy (MSA), a rare neurodegenerative disease for the past five years. A dedicated husband, father and grandfather with a keen sense of wit, a quiet determination and a lifelong commitment to his family, Jim is survived by his wife Linda; his son Jeff Kays; daughter, Jennifer Morton; and grandchildren Hana, Benjamin, Rebekah and Sarah Morton; sister June Wallace; and brother Bill Kays. Jim spent 33 years with Texaco, Inc. holding various managerial and leadership positions in Louisville, KY, Chicago, IL, St. Louis MO, and Albuquerque, NM before retiring in 1995. Prior to joining Texaco in 1962, he served four years in the United States Air Force. A committed Christian, Jim was ordained as a deacon in the Southern Baptist Church in 1971 and joined Hoffmantown Church upon moving to Albuquerque in 1990. MARTINEZ -- Eloy E. Martinez, age 91 died on August 19, 2010. He was preceded in death by his brother Eddie Martinez, and his sisters Lupe Sanchez and Adelina Archuleta. He is survived by his wife, Livia Martinez, his sister Rosella Race; his two sons Carlos and Roberto Martinez; their wives, Lupe Martinez and Janice Martinez; his grandchildren Carlos Eloy Martinez, his wife Rhea Martinez, Maria Ysabel Martinez, Lyndsay Gordon, her husband Jawara, Ruben Martinez, Chelsea Martinez and Francisco Martinez; great-grandchildren Diego Martinez, Cairo Gordonand Milo Miguel Martinez. Eloy had a special relationship with his brother and sisters and was most proud of the accomplishments of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, who he loved to talk about to anyone who would listen. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War and earned many citations during his 22 years of military service. He was a loving and caring husband and a great role model for his children, grandchildren, great- grandchildren. Eloy was an active member of our Lady of the Annunciation Church, participating in numerous ministries and was an active leader in his sons' Scout units. MONTOYA -- Jennifer P. Montoya, aka "Gigi", 36, went home to be with our Lord on August 19, 2010. She was born in Albuquerque on March 17, 1974. Jennifer always enjoyed a house full of family and friends. She is preceded in death by her brother, James; and grandparents, Filiberto and Stella C de Baca and Secundino and Elsie Montoya. Jennifer is survived by her husband, Dwayne Figg; her son, Jeffrey; and daughter, Jasmin; parents, Ernest and Veronica; sisters, Yvonne, Carol and Donny; and brother, Phillip and Jamie. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. MORA -- David R. Mora, beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on August 15, 2010 and is now resting in peace. Dave was born on October 6, 1933 in Cimarron, NM to Juan and Alice Mora along with his surviving brothers, Robert, Raymond and Rudy; and sisters, Frances, Nancy and Dorothy. He was preceded in death by his brother George Mora. In the spring of his life, Dave enjoyed hunting with his dad and brothers, fishing and playing basketball for Cimarron High School. In 1953 Dave joined the US Air Force then married his high school sweetheart Alice Sanchez who gave him three daughters, Terry, Melody and Michelle. While serving his country Dave received many awards including the Meritorious Service Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Commendation Medal and Outstanding Service with Valor. In August 1966 to May 1967 TSgt Mora as NCOIC, Air Operations Section, 416th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Bien Hoa Air Base, Republic of Vietnam; distinguished himself and received The Bronze Star Medal. Dave served all over the world from Elmendorf, Alaska, Guam, Clark AFB, Philippines to being an advisor with the American Embassy at Wheelus AFB, Tripoli Libya before the government over throw. Dave retired from the Air Force in 1972 serving 22 years, then worked for the US Postal Service. In May 1985 Dave was awarded a City of Commendation by City Councilor Richard Mather for his action of heroism in thwarting a robbery on April 10, 1985 as a postman. Retired from the postal service he moved to his hometown, Cimarron, where he worked as a bus driver for his high school and served as a City Councilman. In the winter of his life he married his love, Corrine Lopez and they enjoyed traveling, gardening and golf. Dave will also be remembered for dressing sharp, good cologne, great smile, his mischievous nature and great sense of humor. He loved his grandchildren Chanel, Michael, Crystal, Charae, Nicholas and Mariah; and great-grandchildren Ray and Savannah. He also loved his 30 pairs of tennis shoes, being a loyal Lobo fan, dancing rancheras, his lawn, and his many friends. He will be remembered and missed dearly. PARKS -- Mary Parks of Albuquerque, NM. was born in Big Spring, TX December 2, 1927. She died Thursday, August 19, 2010 at the age of 82. Mary had been under the care of Albuquerque Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the Past two years and three months. She was an active member of Del Norte Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. Mary became a Christian before she was 18 years old. At 18 she married Yankee Aviation Cadet, Walter Parks at the Base Chapel. Together they moved to Connecticut and lived in the NE for the next ten years. Mary, Walter, and their four children moved back to her home of Big Spring, TX, and they have lived in the Southwest ever since, living in New Mexico, Texas and Arizona. Upon returning to Big Spring, Mary immediately joined the First Baptist Church Choir and under her influence, Walter joined the Church and was baptized. She and her family moved to Roswell, NM, Albuquerque, NM, Washington, DC, and Coolidge, AZ. In Coolidge, Mary was busy with the Church, Teaching Sunday School, in charge of WMU and also supporting her husband as Deacon and Deacon Chairman. Sensitive to their calling as Christians and their beliefs, Mary and Walter applied for a Foreign Missionary Position in Brazil. They obtained passports, were interviewed in Nashville and were learning Portuguese, but they were turned down. Together they retired and traveled for some time. Moving back to Albuquerque in 1988, Mary and Walter joined the Del Norte Baptist Church, where Mary sang in the Choir until her illness forced her to do otherwise. Her hobbies included water color painting and reading. Mary is preceded in death by her two sons and her daughter-in-law, Richard Parks age 27 and wife, Gail who both died in an auto accident and Thomas Parks who died of cancer at the age of 55. Mary is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Walter Parks; three children, Jerry Parks of Allen, TX, Rob Parks of Albuquerque, NM and James Parks of Wilcox, AZ; daughter-in-law, and wife of Tom Parks, Mary Parks of Springdale, Arkansas; seven grandchildren, Michael and Justin Parks of Allen, TX, Ski Hall of Albuquerque, Jeremy Parks of Germany, Daniel Parks of Abilene, TX, Stacy Bergquist and Bill Menton of Bentonville, Arkansas; 17 great-grandchildren; many other family members and friends who loved and will miss her. A Memorial Service will be held at Del Norte Baptist Church, 5900 Montgomery Blvd. NE. on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at 10:00am. A luncheon will follow the services in the Church Dining Hall. PEREA -- Lucy M. Perea, age 87, passed away on Thursday, August 19, 2010. She was preeceded in death by her parents, Pablo and Mary Montoya; great-grandchild, Dominic Griego; brother, Tomas Montoya. She is survived by her husband Demecio Perea; daughters, Dianne Orona and husband, Jacobo, and Peg Hennig; four grandchildren, Lisa Burris and husband, Urban, Norah Barela and husband, Adam, Jacob Orona and wife, Reina and Joshua Hennig; 11 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. POLIVKA -- May Polivka, 86, a resident of Albuquerque since 1963, passed into eternal life on Friday, August 20, 2010. Born May 28, 1924 at Hastings, NE to John and Bendine Towler. Survivors include her son, Tom Granaas of Rio Rancho; daughters, Kathryn Lackner of Carlsbad, NM, and Nancy Hoover and husband Chris of Albuquerque; granddaughters, Maren Lackner-Baudet and Jordan Hoover; and grandsons, Jacob Lackner and Ryan Hoover. She is also survived by her long-time friend and companion, Charles B. Halter of Albuquerque; and special nephews, Rod Towler and wife, Janell of Shelton, NE and James S. Morrow of Blue Hill, NE. She was preceded in death by her 11-year-old son, Steve Granaas in 1973; by her husband, Joseph W. Polivka in 1994; by her brothers, John Jr., Frank, Roy and Richard Towler, and one sister, Martha Morrow; and by her parents. May worked in Hastings, NE and at the University of Nebraska Medical School in Omaha as a legal and medical secretary. She married Lloyd A. Granaas and four children were born to the couple. They lived in Hastings and Omaha until 1963, when the family moved to Albuquerque. May worked for 25 years as Administrative Secretary for the Communication Department at the University of New Mexico, from 1966-1991, when she retired. She received the Regents Meritorious Service Award in 1988 and the Friend of the Department Award in 1999. She loved her years there and considered the people there to be her "second family". May married Joseph W. Polivka on August 4, 1972, and she assisted him in the operation of his business, Space Age Upholstery. She enjoyed baseball and was active in Roadrunner Little League for many years. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She also was an avid gardener and enjoyed her pet cat, KIKI, rescued as a feral kitten, from 1988-2006. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at 1:00 p.m., at French - Westside Chapel. Private interment will take place at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. SPARKS -- Charles I. (Sparky) Sparks, age 90, born February 5, 1920 and resident of Albuquerque since 1941, passed away Tuesday, August 17, 2010. He is survived by his son, Michael and wife, Sandy Sparks, Las Vegas, NV; daughters, Sharon and husband, Jim Bounds, Boynton Beach, FL, and Judi and husband, Doug Champlin, Albuquerque; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Hermis Sparks and family, Meridian, ID, and Franklin, wife, Ann Sparks and family, The Dalles, OR; sisters, Arlene Christiansen and family, Des Moines, IA, and Minnie Schultz and family, Paradise, CA; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Charles is preceded in death by his wife, Helen, married for 53 years; and sons, Danny and Charles, Jr. He was the owner of Industrial Coatings Co. for 40 years. Charles was a life member of VFW Post 401. He served in the Army from 1940-1945 as a T. Sgt - Aircraft Engineer Tech during WWII, serving in Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland Campaigns. We would like to thank the nurses and staff of Presbyterian Hospice: Pam, Betsy, and Melanie for their loving care. We especially want to thank his granddaughter Tracy Champlin and friend Joe Thomas for their loving care the past three months. SUMNER -- Blanche Neal Sumner, born February 27, 1921 in Oklahoma City, passed away on August 17, 2010 after a battle with cancer. Blanche was preceded in death by her husband, J. C. TORRES -- Steven "Steve" Marc Torres, age 39, beloved son, brother, uncle and friend, went home to be with his Lord, on Wednesday, August 18, 2010. Steve was born on April 26, 1971 and was life long resident of Albuquerque. Steve was the owner of Torres Drywall. He was an avid fisherman and Chargers fan. Steve was known for his kind, caring, loving, and generous heart, wonderful sense of humor, sparkling smile and love of live. Steve left a lasting impression on all who knew him and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Mannie and Edward.
