MELADY -- M. Rita Campos Melady. The sort of treasure which our community has lost in M. Rita Campos Melady is indescribable. She took the time to know everyone she met, even in some small way, and those who knew her can never forget her. Everywhere that she went she met old friends and made new ones. Always quick with a joke, a story, or a memory, she was the only person I have known who could ask a stranger "how are you?" and truly appreciate the answer. Because of her real interest and love for other people she was a prized friend to everyone who knew her. Those who felt the power of her easy smile, who benefitted from her bold wisdom, or who were touched by her quick and openhanded kindness are innumerable. Rita was generous to everyone and was able to see the nobility and potential in each individual. She was respectful of human dignity but would never bow an inch to hollow authority. She was a mentor, friend and inspiration to the young people she encountered in her decade as a substitute teacher, and a life-long advisor and friend to many of all ages who valued her perception and honesty. Rita could make any setting, and any situation a special and exciting adventure--always finding the fun or the mystery in the everyday. She was a life-loving jack of all trades who never settled down, never quit, never backed away from a challenge or an opportunity for enjoyment. Whatever she imagined, she could do, and her imagination was limitless. She showed all who knew her the special magic hiding under the veil of mundane life, and helped all of us to be better, more courageous, more principled and understanding--in other words, to walk in her footsteps. She was the bravest woman any of us will know. She spoke from her heart to anyone who would listen--to the chagrin of her detractors and to the great delight of her many fans. Rita never ever went unknown or unnoticed. Even during her struggle with cancer, she brought laughter, insight, and vivacity to those who struggled with her. Rita was always quick to help anyone who asked, (and many who didn't) in the most generous, understanding, and personal way. Her heart was a home for the homeless, a source of comfort for the weary, and a fountain of joy and life for us all. No words can describe how she will be missed. Most of all, she was the most dedicated, selfless, and the best mother any person could want. Rita, age 66, died gracefully and contentedly at home on Friday, July 2, 2010. She is survived by her only daughter Marita Campos-Melady, her husband Eugene P. Melady; her two brothers; and sister; and more good and cherished family and friends than can ever be named. In the absence of her we are all diminished, but can take some small comfort in the many years of unique and invigorating memories which are her lasting and priceless gift. A Rosary will be recited Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, July 8, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Rosario Cemetery.
