MCDOWELL -- Joseph W. McDowell, much loved father, grandfather, uncle and companion, died March 12, 2010 at the age of 86. He is survived by his very special friend and the love of his life, Lydia Santillanez; his son Stephen; his daughter Linda and son Jeffery and wife, Iris; his grandson Joshua and wife, Kumi. Joe, Mac, or Jose as his close friends called him, grew up in Pennsylvania. He graduated from Drexel Institute of Technology with a degree in mechanical engineering. His schooling was interrupted when World War II broke out and he became a B-24 pilot in the 15th Air Force. He was shot down bombing the German oil fields in Ploesti, Romania and was a prisoner-of-war. When he returned to the States, he became a pilot instructor for many years. He retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1960 with the rank of Lt. Colonel. After working at Atlantic Refinery and International Latex Corporation in Delaware, Joe moved his family to Albuquerque in 1956, where he worked at Sandia National Laboratories. At Sandia, he worked in the Nuclear Weapons and Solar Programs until he retired in 1983. In retirement, his interest in natural history and the sciences led him to volunteer as a docent and preparatory of fossil specimens at the Museum of Natural History until 2005. He was the first volunteer recognized for 7000 hours of work at NMMNH, a record at the time. While there, he proudly worked almost 10 months to free a never-before-seen genus of Phytosaur from rock, as well as some of the Seismosaurus specimens. He loved his New Mexico and would travel and fish with his buddies, whenever he could. He also loved living in the Sandia Mountains as seen in the multitude of bird, tree, flower and sunset pictures he took. The family is grateful beyond words for him last residence, Beehive Village, where he was treated with utmost kindness, dignity, and caring. NEWMAN -- Wallace E. Newman reached the end of his road on Tuesday, March 9, 2010. SANCHEZ -- Felicita Yepa Sanchez, "Ada," "Ada-lou," "Felix," age 75, loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister went home on Tuesday, January 19, 2010. A resident of Albuquerque, she was born in Paguate, NM on February 6, 1934 to Lupe and Pablo Yepa who predeceased her in death and came to greet her and take her to meet Our Lord. She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Edward; her children Cheryl, Timothy and Johanna; her son-in-law Kurt Zoeller; her grandchildren Andrew and Zachary Ostapchenko, Joshua and Jacqueline Zoeller; her brothers Jimmy, Kemp and Walter Yepa, their spouses and children; plus a very large and loving extended family in Jemez, Laguna, San Felipe Pueblos and Albuquerque. She grew up in Jemez Pueblo, NM where she attended grammar school at the Jemez Mission and then moved to St. Catherine's Catholic boarding school in Santa Fe, NM for her junior years. At ninth grade she enrolled at the Santa Fe Indian School, where on her first day, she met her future husband, Edward. She would graduate in 1953. Upon graduation, she moved to Albuquerque to attend and graduate from nursing school as an LPN. She married Edward on December 14, 1957 at the San Diego Catholic Mission Church in Jemez Pueblo, NM. They settled in Albuquerque where she started working at St. Joseph's Hospital as a labor & delivery nurse. A few years later, she moved up Central Avenue to work at Presbyterian Hospital where she was a float-pool nurse and then was asked to join their newly designated heart floor. She took early retirement in 1988 to concentrate on her very successful Pueblo food business. In the 1960s she and her husband were instrumental in starting the New Mexico Council of American Indians along with many of their friends who carried the same passion. Through this organization the Indian Village at the New Mexico State Fair Grounds was created and a Native American scholarship fund was established through the sales of Native foods. It is said that she had a hand in the invention of the Indian Taco to help feed the Indian Village's daily crowds. As the Indian Village's popularity grew, so did the need to feed the dancers and artists who came to showcase their many talents. Never stopping, she volunteered to create such a kitchen dedicated to home cooked meals. After years of raising money for college scholarships for Native youths, she and her husband began Ed and Felicita's Famous Fry Bread to generate college tuition for their own children. They began by opening the first fry bread stands at the Santa Fe Indian Market and the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. With positive results they went on to sell their Pueblo style of cooking at the New Mexico Arts & Crafts Fair, the New Mexico State Fair's midway and at the Gathering of Nations Pow-Wow to name a few. Felicita carried on their food business for several decades and paid for her children's college educations at the University of Colorado at Boulder, University of California Los Angeles, Stanford University, The Teachers College at Columbia University in New York City and the University of Notre Dame. She took tremendous pride in working the food business because it allowed her children the opportunity to attend any university of their choosing, while employing some of their Native people. After seeing her children well educated, her efforts moved to her grandchildren. In her final years, she assisted her grandchildren in their educational endeavors at Harvard University and in St. Louis at Community School and MICDS and so a new generation has begun. Her resourceful way of paying for education will continue well beyond her time on earth. This will be her legacy. She was laid to rest in Jemez Pueblo on January 21, 2010 in her Native tradition with Catholic services at the San Diego Mission Church surrounded by her loving family and friends. There will be a mass said in her honor at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church on March 17, 2010 at 8:30 a.m. Please contact her daughter Johanna for more information at 636-448-7219 or zoellerfamily@msn.com. Memorial donations will be accepted at the San Diego Riverside Charter School, Attention Principal Jean Johnson, 504 Mission Road, P.O. Box 99, Jemez Pueblo, NM 87024. The memorial fund was established in her name due to her strong dedication and passion for educating Native American children. Felicita will be deeply missed for her bright smile, warm laugh and her loving and caring ways, but mostly for her encouragement to accomplish the unthinkable and unattainable. As she always said, "The sky's the limit! Go for it, kid!"

SCALETTI -- Joseph V. Scaletti, 83 - one of the founders of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, a pioneer who served as UNM's first Vice President for Research, created UNM's south campus Research Park, and who spent the last 23 years of his career working on improving access to healthcare in the underserved rural communities of New Mexico - died on Monday March 8, 2010 at UNM Hospital of a traumatic brain injury. Born in New London Connecticut July 22 1926, the fifth child of Italian immigrants, he volunteered in 1944 for the US Navy where he served on a Destroyer Escort during World War II. He earned his PhD in Microbiology from Cornell University in 1957 and worked at American Cyanamid in New Jersey for one year before joining the faculty of the University of Minnesota. Recruited to the University of New Mexico in 1964, he was one of the founders of the School of Medicine at UNM. He published numerous research papers and, as a professor and chair of the Department of Microbiology in the School of Medicine, Dr Scaletti trained several generations of medical and graduate students. In 1972, he created the Allied Health Sciences Program for training all members of the healthcare team. During his tenure as UNM's first Vice President for Research (1978-1986), he quadrupled the outside funding for research at the university. He was also responsible for planning and launching the University Research Park, the Rio Grande Research Corridor, and several campus buildings. After returning to the Health Sciences campus, he created the Rural Health Interdisciplinary Program (1990-2003) with Dr Clark Hansbarger, organizing interdisciplinary teams of students in health-related fields to study and work at clinics in rural communities throughout New Mexico. In 1994 Scaletti chaired a task force charged with developing a model for using advanced technology to support and educate rural health care providers. The result was New Mexico House Joint Memorial 13, legislation that continues to provide funding for telemedicine and distance education. He was appointed in 1996 to a 5 year term on the Health & Human Services National Advisory Committee on Interdisciplinary Education and Community-based Linkages in Washington DC. In 2004, Dr Scaletti and Dr Sanjeev Arora co-wrote a grant to launch Project ECHO: a model for treating complex chronic diseases in rural areas. In 2008 he worked with Dr Arora on ECHO's winning entry in the Changemakers competition for 'Disruptive Innovations in Health and Healthcare', an award that led to a grant from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. In the days leading up to the injury that caused his death, Dr Scaletti had been working on a Hepatitis C awareness campaign: a partnership of the UNM Health Sciences Center, the State Department of Health, the Hep C Alliance, and the Rotary Club of Albuquerque (of which he was a member and a Paul Harris Fellow). He was also mentoring first-time grant seekers and brainstorming on innovative approaches to solving the health workforce shortages in New Mexico. He was an idealist who always encouraged and inspired others to pursue their dreams and make their own contributions to the world. He is survived by his daughter Carla Scaletti, son Robert Scaletti, son-in-law Kurt Hebel, daughter-in-law Laura Scaletti, granddaughter Ciana Scaletti, grandson Dominic Scaletti, his sister Teofila Sonnone, and brother Andrew Scaletti. He was preceded in death by his wife Rita Scaletti. A memorial service is planned for early May on the UNM campus. To read more about his life and share your memories, please visit http://www.josephscaletti.org A memorial fund to provide financial assistance to students in the health professions who intend to work in the underserved rural communities of New Mexico has been established in his name.
