ASHER -- Joetha Jean Callison Asher, 79, passed away suddenly at her home on March 2, 2010. Born on September 29, 1930 in Trenton, MO to Emory and Helen Callison, she grew up in Chariton, IA. She married Arlen Asher on August 24, 1950 in Kirksville, MO. She received a degree in education from UNM and taught first grade at Montgomery Elementary in Albuquerque for seven years. Jo earned her masters degree in special education in 1976 and taught at Eldorado High School until her retirement from Albuquerque Public Schools in 1981. She then taught at Cochiti and Santo Domingo Pueblos, and at the Indian School in Santa Fe. During that time she and Arlen built their solar adobe home south of Santa Fe. Jo was an inspiration to the many children whose lives she influenced in countless ways, both in and out of the classroom, throughout her life. The heart of her family, Jo enjoyed cooking, knitting, and sewing, especially for her beloved granddaughters. She made award-winning rag rugs, volunteered as a docent for the living museum at Los Golondrinas, knitted baby blankets for the infants at the UNM Hospital NICU, and volunteered at a food pantry in Santa Fe. She was also involved in the Women for Women organization sponsoring women in Afghanistan. One of her many interests was genealogy; she had traced her family back 15 generations. Jo loved animals and plants, and enriched every living thing she touched. She is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Arlen; sons, Terry and Kelly and his wife Donna; granddaughters, Melissa and Kathleen; sister, Judy Bonnett and husband George; nieces, Jill Harris and husband Rick and Jodi Walker and husband Robert and their families. FORD -- Mr. Marvin "Pete" Ford passed away Saturday, March 6, 2010. His wife Jane predeceased him November 2002, after 47 years of marriage. Ford is survived by one son, Kenneth Williams, Albuquerque, NM; and two daughters, Janice Larson and husband, Noel, Larkspur, CO; and Debby Ford-Garber and husband, Dennis Garber, Albuquerque, NM. Marine, served from 1949 to 1954 during the Korean War. Mr. Ford returned to New Mexico from the war, and in July of 1954, started as a laborer for a small local concrete specialty company. Pete's can-do attitude helped that small company turn into the largest commercial builder in New Mexico. In 1967, Pete acquired all the shares of the company and created Jaynes Corporation. When he retired from Jaynes Corporation in 1990, he had served as Chairman of the Board or President for over 20 years. Mr. Ford was an influential member in the construction industry, both in the State and nationally. He presided over the Associated General Contractors for two terms and chaired many boards and committees. Construction standards are higher and work sites are safer in part to the years of effort and dedication from Pete. His service to the State of New Mexico was long and ongoing. He served as Chairman of the State's Economic Development Commission and Construction Industries Commission for many years. Under his leadership New Mexico advanced economically. He was extremely proud of helping bring Intel to Rio Rancho. He was presented with the "Distinguished Citizen Award" in 1982 by the City of Albuquerque and in 1996 was conferred the honor of "Hidalgo de Calificada Nobleza al Servicio del Estado de Nuevo Mexico" for devoted service to all matters pertaining to the welfare and progress of the Land of Enchantment. His community involvement was varied and extensive. He was an active member of Elks Lodge 461, Ballut Abyad Shrine, and the Executive Association of Greater Albuquerque. His personal professional motto was "do it and be done with it!" Mr. Ford loved his State and its people and was known for always giving back. Mr. Ford spent over 25 years working with the Boy Scouts of America. He continued his service to that fine organization and chaired the Building Committee for the local BSA Chapter and served as President of the Greater Southwest Council. He enjoyed traveling the State and region speaking to troops and congratulating fellow Eagle Scouts. In his later years, Mr. Ford stayed active in State and community matters. Rarely would a day pass in which his advice and counsel were not asked for. He loved a deal and helped so many accomplish their dreams and goals. This giant of a man was truly larger than life and will be remembered and loved. A private family service will be held with interment to follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Ford has requested that donations be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Greater Southwest Council.
