BALDWIN -- George Curriden Baldwin May 5, 1917-January 23, 2010 Surrounded by his loving family, George Curriden Baldwin passed away on Saturday, January 23, 2010 after a long illness. He was 92. In September, George had lost his beloved wife of 57 years, Winnie. The couple had been longtime residents of Santa Fe, but moved to Albuquerque in 2009 to be close to their oldest son. Born in Denver, George was the sixth child of Harry and Elizabeth Baldwin. He showed an early aptitude for learning and a keen interest in science. His father's work for the U.S. Geological Survey required frequent moves; George attended eight schools in four states as a young boy. He attended Westminster Junior College in Salt Lake City, continued at the University of Utah, and finished at Kalamazoo College in 1939 with a bachelor's degree in physics. After completing a PhD at the University of Illinois Urbana in 1943, he joined the General Electric Company as a research physicist. While working in Schenectady, New York, he met and later married Winifred Gould, an exchange teacher from London, England. The couple raised three children. George was elected to a term as town councilman in the family's hometown of Niskayuna, New York. In 1967 he left GE to teach nuclear engineering and science at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. Retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1978, George then joined the staff of the Los Alamos National Laboratory. He and his wife moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, fulfilling a dream since visiting on their honeymoon in 1952. George retired from Los Alamos in 1987. In his free time, George was an avid amateur astronomer, a self-taught pianist, and a historical researcher. He wrote many scientific and technical articles and authored two books, "An Introduction to Nonlinear Optics" (1969) and a memoir, "The Science Was Fun" (2006). He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Alpha, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a fellow of the American Physical Society. In his retirement, one of George's most notable accomplishments was locating an inscription left by the Escalante Expedition, discovered originally in 1884 by his father on a surveying expedition. George was predeceased by his parents; brothers; and sisters. He is survived by his three children; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, a donation to either the Santa Fe Community Foundation or to Kalamazoo College is suggested. A celebration of his life is being arranged by his family for June, 2010. Arrangements are under the direction of Berardinelli Family Funeral Service 1399 Luisa Street Santa Fe, NM 87505 (505) 984-8600

CARIAN -- Peter L. Carian, May 18, 1963 - January 26, 2000 Daddy, whenever I misbehaved, you told me you had a daughter like me once and buried her in the backyard. I believed you until I was about six. Hilarious! Whenever I got bad grades, you encouraged me by telling me I had a sister named Misty who was an exemplary student traveling the world (which was why I'd never met her). I believed you until I was about eight. Priceless! When you bet me that within ten years they'd make a device as small as a marble that could play music in theater quality surround sound without external speakers, I believed you until about now. Hasn't happened yet. You owe me five bucks. They say laughter helps. Over the years, it definitely has. It didn't hurt that you showed us the way to do it right. Missing you and all the laughs! Remembering you today and every day... Love, Adrienne

He also served as founding headmaster of Phoenix (AZ) Country Day School in 1961-62 and taught English earlier at schools in Houston, TX, and Watertown, CT. The turbulent sixties prompted Mr. Shepard to turn his attention from private education to the struggling public-school system of New Haven, CT. He taught at a public high school in New Haven from 1969 until his retirement in 1981. During those years he served as coordinator for the high school's new freshman-year program, which made innovative use of clusters of teachers to improve the freshman experience. Those years, he wrote later, were "a transforming and life-altering experience." Mr. Shepard, known to his friends as Chuck, grew up in Neenah, WI. There he acquired a lifelong love of the outdoors and with it the roots of his spirituality. He served in the Army during the European occupation and attended Yale College, graduating in 1951. As a senior, Mr. Shepard was president of Dwight Hall, now also known as Yale's Center for Public Service and Social Justice. Mr. Shepard returned to Yale to earn a master's degree in English in 1954 and, 30 years later, a master's degree in divinity. Mr. Shepard and his wife, Derry Ann Moritz, who married in 1981, moved to Albuquerque, NM, in 1990. They were drawn by the history, spirituality and multicultural life of the Southwest. In Albuquerque, Mr. Shepard was an active member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. In addition to Ms. Moritz, Mr. Shepard is survived by three children from his first marriage, Timothy C. Shepard of New York, NY, Charles E. Shepard of Reno, NV, and Carrie Shepard of Davis, CA; by a stepson, Thomas Osenton of Chicago, IL; by six grandchildren; by his brother, Donald C. Shepard Jr. of Neenah, WI; and by his first wife, Mary Jo Shepard of Hamden, CT. Contributions in Mr. Shepard's memory may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, AL. Memorial services will be held in Albuquerque in about one month and in New Haven in mid-May. Additional information is available at /memorialwebsites.legacy.com/ChuckShepard .
