ALVAREZ -- Olga (Olgui) Alvarez, born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on May 16, 1954 and a resident of Albuquerque since 1987, died October 29, 2009. She is survived by her beloved son Miguel Lopez-Fresquet; her parents Dr. Milton Alvarez-Pagan and Olga Alvarez; her brother Milton K. Alvarez; her sisters Marisol Navas-Sacasa, Silvia Alvarez, Margie Alvarez-Woodson and husband Darren Woodson; and nieces and nephews. Olga was a loving, caring and very special person who always lent a hand to anyone in need, including strangers. During her life, she touched many people's lives and she will be deeply missed by her family and all of those who knew her. BARELA -- Abelicio Baca "A.B." Barela was born on June 5, 1918 and died on October 30, 2009 at age 91. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Beneranda; his youngest daughter, Berlinda; and his first great-grandson, Aidan Oshiro. Survivors include his children, Dan Barela and wife, Donna, Esmerlindo Barela, Jennifer B. Montano and husband, Jake, Joe Barela and wife, Anna, and Francine La Jeunesse; his grandchildren, Natalie Barela, Mario Montano and wife, Jonna, Dominic Montano, Andrea Barela, Vanessa Barela, JoAna Barela, and Olivia Oshiro and husband, Brian; great-grandchildren, Nolan and Gavin Oshiro; and his kitty cats, Jack and Jill. Mr. Barela worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps, then served in World War II. He went on to earn a college degree at New Mexico State University, then continued with graduate courses at New Mexico Tech and St. Joseph's College. He was a teacher for many years, then worked with the Federal Housing Administration. Upon retirement, he worked part-time as a crossing guard leaving plenty of time for his passion of reading and junk collecting. Mr. Barela was a member of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Church for over forty-five years, serving as an usher. He was the treasurer of the CCC Alumni Association. Mr. Barela will be remembered for his strong will, his incredible sense of humor and for his unwavering devotion to his Catholic faith. The family would sincerely like to thank the many physicians and nurses who assisted with Mr. Barela's care. A special thanks to the 4th and 5th floor nurses at the VA hospital, Nurse Dolores Peterson and her CEC students, caregiver, Ron Archibeque, Vista Care Hospice, and the many neighbors, family and friends who provided care and support. Pallbearers will be Jake Montano, Mario Montano, Dominic Montano, Edwin Dominguez, Johnny Battaglia, Larry Gardner, and Pete Vigil. BOYD -- Thomas M. Boyd, 66, a resident of Socorro, New Mexico passed away Friday, October 30, 2009. Mr. Boyd is survived by his wife, Gretchen M. Boyd; his children, Tracy Boyd-Griego and Thomas Boyd; his sister, Marlene Thompson and husband, Bill; six grandchildren, Brittany Boyd, Jordan Griego, Alexander Griego, Jarrod Boyd, Shane Boyd and Benjamin Gordon; his in-laws, Eugene and Betty Myers; the mother of his children, Mary Boyd; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. Boyd is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Mercedes Boyd and his sister, Martha Smith. Mr. Boyd was a member of the Catholic Church, a retired US Air Force Veteran serving during Vietnam and a recipient of the Purple Heart, and other awards and commendations. Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 4, 2009, from 6:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. by Deacon Harry Beare. BURK -- Yolanda C. Morelos, 56, passed away October 29, 2009. She was a lifelong resident of Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her mother Enedina S. Morelos. She is survived by her husband Val Burk; sons Melvin Windbiel, William Windbiel and Mark Morelos; grandchildren Patricia, Angel, William, Paul, Nicholas and Kayla; father Robert L. FIELDS -- Acie Fields, a resident of Albuquerque for 38 years, went to be with the Lord, after a brief illness, on October 29, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Corky; daughters, Karin Fields of Albuquerque and Nyeta Haines of Las Cruces; son-in-law, Edward of Las Cruces; sisters, Blanche and Bessie; and brother, Robert; cousins, Cubie and Wanda of California. As with so many of his generation, Acie felt it was not only an honor, but his duty to serve his country during WWII in the United States Army. He participated in the Normandy D-Day Invasion which eventually liberated millions of others. His devotion to his country continued as he went on to make a career in the military, retiring after 29 and 1/2 years of service in 1971. Never being one to be idle, he went on to a second career as a civil servant in Albuquerque until 1986. His mind was so active that he was involved in ham radio operation, becoming an extra class KR5R, loved to stay current with the latest political events, and became a computer wizard at the age of 72, even introducing his daughter to the internet. Besides his love of fishing and hunting, nothing brought him greater delight than being with his family. HERBST -- Geraldine B. Herbst, 96, passed away October 31, 2009 at her home surrounded by her family and her beloved Miss Kitty. She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years Norman A Herbst. Geraldine is survived by her sisters Lorraine Flinchbaugh and Ruth Smith; brother Rodney Breneman all of York County, Pennsylvania. Mrs Herbst is also survived by her son Norman Herbst and wife Mary of El Paso, TX and daughter Norma Swanson of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Daniel Herbst, Stephanie Schulte and husband Mike, Melissa Kohrs and husband Louis; and also five great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren. Geraldine moved to Albuquerque from Red Lion, Pa. in 1957. She worked in accounting for Dale Bellamah Corp. and was active in making and showing arts and crafts. Mrs. Herbst was a charter and current member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church. Cremation has taken place and a private graveside memorial will be held for Norman and Geraldine at a later date. JARAMILLO -- Jose Gardino, age 80, died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, October 26, 2009. Gardino was preceded in death by his parents, Policarpio and Rufinita Jaramillo and several other brothers and sisters. Gardino was born on April 1, 1929 in El Rito. He was a resident of Simi Valley, California since 1964. He was a Veteran of the Korean War and set up residency in California in 1950. While employed with Hughes Aircraft in California he was instrumental to the success of the first Lunar Landing. Uncle G, as he was fondly named by his nieces and nephews, was loved by his family and community. Mr. Jaramillo is survived by his wife, Edith Jaramillo; son, Mark Jaramillo; daughter, Karen Jaramillo; grandsons, Shain and Jake; brother, Horacio Jaramillo and wife Frances and numerous other relatives and friends. A Rosary service will be held at St John XXIII Catholic Church in Albuquerque, NM on Friday, November 6, 2009 at 8:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held in his honor at San Juan Nepomuceno in El Rito, NM at 10:00 AM followed by internment at the El Rito Cemetery. JENNINGS -- Brian Edward Jennings, an attorney and member of the N.M. State Bar, and a resident of Albuquerque, bid a final adieu on Saturday, October 24, 2009. LUJAN -- Kitano Lujan was born on March 26, 1928 and passed away on October 29, 2009 at the age of 81. Kitano was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marie, and daughter Betty. He is survived by his son Valentino and wife Florence; daughter Josie and husband James; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He worked many years as a mason. After retiring he kept busy with his garden, fishing and casinos. He was a great story teller who enjoyed the company of family and friends. Kitano was a very loving man who will be greatly missed by those who knew him. MEADE -- Dawn M. Meade (Riley), 34, was called to be with the Lord on October 29,2009. She was born 02-17-75. Dawn is survived by daughter Jasmine Meade; husband Timothy Meade; Mother Shirley Riley; Father Patrick J. Riley; stepmom Terri Riley; big brother John P. Riley; Step brother and sister Gregory and Stephanie Locke; Grandma Polinski; and many more aunts, uncles, cousins, and nieces. OROZCO -- Louise E. Orozco-Chavez, 66, a resident of Albuquerque went to be with our heavenly Father on Friday, October 30, 2009. Mrs. Orozco-Chavez is survived by her son, Bobby Chavez and wife, Cindy; her sister, Beatrice Chavez; her four brothers, Art (Tudy) Chavez, Albert Chavez and wife, Julie, Louie Chavez, John Chavez and wife, Nora; five nieces and five nephews. Mrs. Orozco Chavez was preceded in death by her husband, David Orozco; her parents, Henry and Ramona Chavez. Mrs. Orozco-Chavez was a member of the Catholic Church. PENA -- Elvira "Vera" Pena, 77, resident of Albuquerque, formerly of Vaughn, NM, passed on to a better life Friday, October 30, 2009 at home after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Albert Pena; son, Arturo Pena and wife, Edna of Taos; and daughter, Yvonne Chisholm and husband, Ken of Lake Mary, FL. She is also survived by grandchildren, Janell, Theresa, Michelle, Steven, Jimmy, Randall, and Jessica; seven great-granchildren; and her sister, Mary Carrasco.
