COLBERT -- Elizabeth "Betty" Colbert, nee Chapman, Renowned New Mexican potter, died September 12, 2009. Born in Columbus, Ohio to Harold Patterson Chapman and Marion Moore Chapman in 1925, the artist came to the state to pursue a studio arts degree at the University of New Mexico. In 1948, Ms. Colbert was a student resident at the Harwood Foundation, studying with all the great artists then living in Taos. Married later the same year, she and her husband Al (deceased 1966) built a house in Corrales. After many years in Corrales, the artist moved first to Algodones and then Albuquerque before retiring to Regina. It was thanks to her last husband, Charles Groffman (deceased 2008) that she discovered the peace and beauty of Regina. Betty Colbert started potting in graduate school at U.N.M. and completed her studies at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel, Mexico. In the '60's, Ms. Colbert worked with Fortino-Guerrero, a master wheel potter in Hidalgo and Gonzalo Garcia at Artisono Tallaveria in Guanajuato. She went on to study with many other famous American potters. A studio potter and muralist, Ms. Colbert also taught at the University of Albuquerque for nearly two decades, as well as leading many seminars and workshops at Ghost Ranch. She worked with the Santa Fe Opera on a benefit series of fashion shows. Her work consistently won prizes and was much sought after by collectors. Ms. Colbert's pots are part of permanent collections at the Albuquerque, Arizona State University and Brooklyn art museums and she was commissioned for installations at the Albuquerque Federal Courthouse, Boys Academy and Christian Reform church. Her work was recognized in many publications ranging from local and regional newspapers, magazines such as New Mexico, New Mexico Architect, Craft Horizons and Ceramics Monthly, textbooks and the Who's Who of American Women. In 1964, she was selected by the state chapter of the American Interior Designers to do all of the pottery for the New Mexican Room at the "Pavilion of American Interiors" of the Worlds Fair in New York. This was in conjunction with her successful business creating hanging stoneware lights. Subsequent to an interview Ms. Colbert conducted with the architect Frank Lloyd Wright, he asked her to create some lamps for a house he was designing in Oklahoma. Ms. Colbert worked as a radio journalist and on-air interviewer for such famous visitors to Albuquerque as Wright, Adlai Stevenson and Eleanor Roosevelt. She also co-chaired the Sandoval County Democratic Party from 1960 to 1967, served on the State Central Committee of the Democratic Party from 1962 to 1967 and remained involved in politics all of her life. EINFELD -- Carol Marie Einfeld ended her earthly journey on September 13, 2009 and was welcomed into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. On the day of Carol's transition to eternal life, earth grew dimmer and heaven grew brighter. Carol was born July 13, 1952 in Holland, Michigan to Andrew and Arlyn Blystra. Carol was raised and nurtured in a loving Christian family in this Western Michigan farming community along with sister Sharlyn, and brothers Calvin and Michael. Glimpses of Carol's childhood include tree climbing with her brothers, Lake Michigan beaches, Dutch Dancing, and horsemanship. Carol enrolled at Calvin College in Grand Rapids Michigan where she met her lifelong husband Wayne. She later transferred to Grand Rapids Community College where she became a licensed practical nurse. Carol and Wayne spent three years in Seattle, Washington where Carol worked at Swedish Hospital. In 1976 Carol and Wayne moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where they lived and flourished for 36 years in a rich and vibrant community. They were blessed with three children, Eric, Jessica and Alison and later with daughter-in-law Stephanie and 16-month grandson Carter. Carol joined the Hope Christian School community in Albuquerque where she worked for over 15 years as a school nurse. She also enriched her life through other community activities including Bible studies, soccer mom, Young Life committee service, and quilting. Carol was blessed with a quiet, gentle, and listening spirit and, as a result of this gift, developed many enduring friendships. Her life ambitions were simple: honor her Creator and Savior and love her husband, children and grandchildren. She personified and mirrored Jesus' grace shown to her in her many relationships with others. In her recent four year battle against cancer, Carol continued to exhibit extraordinary gentleness and grace through this difficult time. Her quiet and heroic strength in the middle of trial was and will continue to be an inspiration to many around her. Despite her illness, Carol kept her focus on others by continuing to produce numerous quilts-often crafted during periods of discomfort and pain-that were love offerings to her many friends young and old. Carol's loving and gentle spirit will be missed and always remembered by the community that she leaves behind. We are confident that Carol's life of honoring God through quiet obedience, and willing service to others, made possible by Jesus' complete sacrifice for her, will be marked by the following words: She has fought the good fight. She has finished the race. She has kept the faith. Now there is in store for Carol the crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous Judge will award to her on that day-and not only to her but also to all who have longed for Christ's appearing. (2 Timothy 4:7-8) A service of celebration for the life of Carol will be held on Tuesday September 22, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 8600 Academy Blvd. Memorial contributions in honor of Carol's life can be made to Young Lives, a Christian ministry devoted to Christian care and nurture for young single moms and their children.
