AMBERG -- Mary Amberg, a community leader in volunteerism, died of complications from multiple sclerosis on September 7, 2009. She was 78. Mary was born September 6, 1931 to Margaret Helen and Ray M. Amberg at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn. The family lived in St. Paul. She graduated from University of Minnesota High School with 70-plus graduates in 1949. She attended Wells College in Aurora, N.Y., and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1954 with a bachelor's degree in public nursing. She married classmate H. Mikkel Kelly in February, 1954. The couple moved to Wickford, R.I., where he served as an aviator in the Navy. They returned to Minnesota and then briefly lived in Kansas and Missouri, before they moved to Albuquerque in 1961, when he became a hospital administrator at Bataan Memorial Hospital. The couple raised three children and moved from the Northeast Heights to the North Valley in 1970. While raising her family, Mary continued nursing, administering methadone to heroin addicts in the La Llave program and working at the kidney dialysis unit at St. Vincent's Hospital in Santa Fe. Mary was president of the Albuquerque Junior League in 1972-73. Under her leadership, the league sponsored Story of Albuquerque, a program to encourage citizen participation and leadership; prepared a booklet titled "Handbook to Community Services" for newcomers to the city; and worked to establish permanent kindergarten programs in New Mexico. She worked for the Office of Senior Affairs for 14 years. She was director of the senior volunteer program and supervisor of five programs: RSVP, Foster Grandparents, Senior Companion, the Ombudsman and Intergenerational program. She was director of Highland Senior Center from 1984 until 1990 when she became the first director of the Los Volcanes senior center on the West Mesa. Among her accomplishments, she was noted for installing the first permanent art collection in a state senior center at Highland Senior Center, and she partnered with the Hyatt Hotel to see that 500 meals were provided to seniors on Thanksgiving in 1991. She became president of the Southwest Society on Aging in 1989 at the convention in New Orleans. In addition to her work in regional senior issues, she volunteered to participate in studies to find a cure for multiple sclerosis. Although she was diagnosed with MS at age 52, she continued to work at Los Volcanes with the aid of a walker and overcame two hip surgeries before she retired in 1994. She was honored for her body of work when she was named MS Achievement Award Winner at the Dinner of Champions at the Albuquerque Country Club in 1993. Other community involvement included serving on the boards of the Albuquerque Symphony Association, Kappa Alpha Theta Alumnae Association, Martinez House of Neighborly Service, the Rio Grande Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Albuquerque Guild of the Santa Fe Opera. Mary enjoyed swimming, waterskiing, snow skiing and ice skating. She loved to cook, especially making holiday cookies with her mother, grandchildren, and friends. After she retired, she took classes in music appreciation and was a Santa Fe Opera season ticket holder. She enjoyed clubs with lifelong friends that involved sewing, bridge, gardening, Scrabble, and the stock market, and served as vice president of the EOA club. She made numerous trips to visit relatives and explore other countries. She is survived by her brother John Amberg and his wife Poo Wyer of La Jolla, Calif.; son Mikkel Kelly and his wife Suzanne Kelly of Westminster, Colo.; daughter Ann Kelly and her husband John Neas of Denver, Colo.; son Thomas B. Mary was deeply admired by everyone for her courageous and caring spirit as she succeeded in leading a truly full life, contributing greatly to the world around her. In spite of the challenges of MS, she maintained a positive attitude and always said, "I want to do as much as I can for as long as I can." She particularly loved social and family gatherings, where she showered everyone with encouragement and good cheer. We love her, and miss her. CALLAWAY -- Betty Mae Callaway, Our kind, gentle mother, Betty Callaway, passed away peacefully at home on September 10, 2009 of natural causes. She was surrounded by all of her family members. She was 86. Betty was predeceased by her eldest son, James Edwin Callaway, Jr.; her mother, Velma Ross; and her husband, James Edwin Callaway. Betty was born on November 30, 1922 in Jackson, Mississippi to Thomas J. and Velma Mclean Ross. As a child, she spent several years in Cuba where her father worked on a sugar cane plantation. She always remembered those years as happy ones. Upon their return to the states, Betty's family moved to Temple, Texas, where they owned a small cafe. Betty was an incredibly intelligent woman, an avid reader, a gifted writer and a mathematics whiz. She graduated from Temple High School at 16 and attended the University of Texas in Austin. She graduated with honors and earned her teaching credentials in English. One of Betty's early teaching positions at Temple Junior College was a fateful one because this was where she met her future husband, Edwin. Ed was a well known radio newscaster in Temple and a member of the Army Air Corps. Betty and Ed were married in 1947. Their sons, Jim and Steve soon followed. During the Korean Conflict, Ed flew transport and rescue missions while Betty stayed in Temple to care for her young sons. After the war, Ed was transferred to Tinker Air Force in Oklahoma City where daughter, Susan, was born. The next transfer took the family to Bangkok, Thailand, where Betty resumed her teaching career at the International School of Bangkok. As a small town girl, Betty found her experiences in Thailand both challenging and exciting. And with the exceptions of the humidity and mosquitoes, she enjoyed this overseas assignment immensely. She would talk about Thailand for the rest of her life. Eventually, the Air Force transferred the family to Sandia Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Betty began to teach once again, this time for Albuquerque Public Schools. She taught at what was then Grant-Los Altos Elementary/Junior High School. Sandia Base would be the family's last military tour. When Ed retired 1966, the family made Albuquerque their home. Air Force life agreed with Betty and she enjoyed the many life-long friendships she made with other military wives and their families. Betty continued her teaching career at Grant Middle School. At one point, she took a sabbatical leave from teaching and earned a Master's Degree in English from UNM. In time, Betty began to consider career options and took the necessary steps to become a counselor. She earned another Master's degree and worked fifteen years as an elementary school counselor. As a counselor, Betty was well respected for her calm concern and genuine affinity for children. Parents, teachers, administrators and students all sought her wise guidance. Following her retirement in 1988, Betty continued with an extremely active life. She walked the mall each morning. She played bridge regularly with several different groups. She was a docent at the Albuquerque Museum. She was well known as a 'black belt' in Al-Anon. Betty had also traveled extensively throughout the world. Betty Callaway will be remembered as a loving, generous, compassionate woman who was most content when her home was filled with the laughter and love of friends and family. We will miss the sound of her voice. Betty is survived by her son Steve and his wife, Sue Walker; by her daughter, Susan; and by her treasured granddaughter, Rebecca Lynn. We are extremely grateful to the numerous friends who have supported us throughout this difficult time. Your love has given us great solace and strength. A special thanks must go out to Visiting Angels for their loving care. We would also like to thank Odyssey Hospice for their care and service. A Memorial Celebration of Betty's life will take place at Christ Unity Church, 9800 Candelaria NE on Monday, September 14, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. Betty's remains will be interred at the Santa Fe National Cemetery on Monday, September 14, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. Arrangements by Direct Funeral Services, 2919 4th St, NW, ABQ, 87107. 505-343-8008.

PERCILICK -- Richard (Dick) Percilick born March 6, 1931 in Auburn, NY, died September 5, 2009. Former US Navy Submarine Sailor, pilot and building contractor; Dick loved his family, his work, his animals, boats and aircraft. He thrived on challenges. He was philosophical, opinionated and compassionate. His creative endeavors are evident in every quadrant of this city and beyond. He rarely referenced his service in the Navy, never took his accomplishments seriously, but told great stories drawn from his abundant life experiences. Those of us who loved him simply appreciated being in the presence of a good, funny and engaging man. He never lost his edgy sense of humor, even during the most difficult times. Shortly before Dick died he spoke of having no regrets, that he had lived life to the fullest. He will be missed by many. Dick is survived by his wife, Sue; his son Mike and children and mate Denise. Also included in his extended family are his stepchildren, Ken Paulick and mate Tina Gelinas, Heidi Dotson and husband Robert and their twin sons. His life will be celebrated; our stories and Dick's stories will be shared at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Dick and Sue's home. Because of Dick's love for animals the family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be sent to The Animal Humane Association of NM, 615 Virginia SE, Albuquerque, NM, 87108.

SHASKI -- Joye Williams Shaski passed away on Monday, September 7, 2009 at the Presbyterian Kaseman Hospice after a long battle with cancer. Joye Lou Williams was born to Curtis and Mary V. Williams on June 17, 1941 in Farmington, where she attended school. After finishing high school in Cheyenne, Wyoming, she attended the University of New Mexico, and shortly after graduating, she was married to John, whom she had met at UNM. His career in the U.S. Air Force and later with Corning Glass took the Shaskis' to Southern California, West Virginia, and ultimately to Madison Connecticut, where they raised two sons, Brian and John Curtis, known as J.C. A dedicated middle school teacher for more than 30 years, Joye earned a Master's degree in special education, which then became her primary focus. Throughout her career, she remained passionately committed to her students, with a stamina and unwavering commitment to excellence that became the hallmarks of Joye's teaching style, as in all other areas of her life. After retiring from teaching, Joye owned and operated a travel agency in Vermillion Ohio for five years. Soon after returning to New Mexico in 1999, where she and John had planned to spend their retirement years, he died suddenly in 2003. Joye decided to remain in Albuquerque, where she lovingly cared for her mother Mary V. until the latter's death earlier this year. Fascinated with the Southwest and its peoples, cultures, and landscapes, Joye attended OASIS classes to expanded her knowledge of the region. Rejecting idleness, she became an active alumna of the Gamma Beta Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, serving on the KKG House Corporation Board. At the same time, Joye served as president of the board of her neighborhood association and volunteered at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, where her knowledge, energy and charm quickly earned her a special place in the hearts of her colleagues. Joye's unmistakable voice, her sharp wit and keen sense of irony and absurdity will be long remembered by all who knew her. This past summer, as Joye's illness worsened, her friends at the IPCC created a senbazuru-one thousand origami paper cranes held together by strings--believed to be a powerful talisman of luck and benevolence. According to the ancient Japanese legend, anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane, a symbol of especially potent magic, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury. Once it became known that a senbazuru was being made for Joye, many people who knew her in other venues eagerly took part in this tribute to their friend. The multicolored senbazuru brightened her home and heart and was a constant reminder of the many friends who cared so deeply for Joye. In addition to her sons, Joye is survived by her brother, Milton Williams of Cheyenne, and two grandchildren, Brigid and Braan. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 14, 2009 at 5 p.m. at the French Mortuary, Westside Chapel with reception to follow. Interment is scheduled for Tuesday, September 15, 2009, at 9:30 a.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Brian and J.C. wish to thank the Kaseman Hospice program and Joye's many friends whose love and care made her final months easier. The family suggests that those wishing to commemorate Joye make donations to their favorite charity in her memory. Please visit our online guest book for Joye at RememberTheirStory.com .
