DEAN -- GERALDINE ROSE RASOR Good-bye, Gerry, I wish not to recall the day, when your lips moved, and I saw Your voice reaching me, gently and Ever so softly, Saying good-bye. In my dreams, nowadays, I Dare not hear the Sound of your voice, lest It be so sweet, that I may not let it go, when The time comes, For the Rose to die. It has been a pleasure Chatting with you again, To see your grave again through The drops of tear, which rolls down my face, just as My breath goes passing Through another sigh. The day had nearly ended, when Returning from your place of rest, In the crimson aura of the west I saw you riding with me Into the bloody battlefields of The western sky. Good-bye Gerry, until we meet again On the gentler slopes of the universe, to Renew our vows of unfeigned affections. Nuri For My Late Gentle Friend, Geraldine Rose Rasor Dean, Born in Carlsbad, NM on November 18, 1941, and died in Albuquerque, NM on August 3, 2008

HALL -- Edward T. Hall Ph.D. Emeritus Northwestern University May 16, 1914 - July 20, 2009 Distinguished professor of anthropology and long-time resident of Santa Fe, Edward T. Hall, also known as "Ned" by family, friends and colleagues, passed away swiftly at his home in Santa Fe on the evening of July 20th, 2009. His wife, Karin, was at his side. Ned's strength had begun to wane in recent days and before that, he had suffered several strokes. Ned was a true pioneer in anthropology and is also regarded as the father of the field of intercultural studies. This year is the 50th anniversary of his classic work, The Silent Language, which has influenced millions of people worldwide. Ned was born on May 16th, 1914 in Webster Groves, MO but he grew up in New Mexico where he attended Los Alamos School for Boys, Aspen Ranch and Santa Fe High School. In 1936, he graduated from The University of Denver. He received his MA in Anthropology in 1938 from the University of Arizona. In 1942 he completed his Ph.D. at Columbia University. During WW II, Ned served in the US Army in both the European and Pacific theaters. After the war, he married Mildred Ellis Reed of Pittsburgh, PA. They had two children, Ellen M. Hall and Eric R. Hall. Edward T. Hall was on the faculties of the Illinois Institute of Technology, the Washing-ton School of Psychiatry, Bennington College, the University of Denver and Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. After his retirement from Northwestern, he continued to lecture at colleges and universities throughout the United States and abroad. His books, The Silent Language, The Hidden Dimension, Beyond Culture, The Dance of Life are still widely read and quoted in this country and abroad. They have been translated into many languages. Ned also wrote and published numerous articles about intercultural relations and man's use of space. His particular interest in cross-cultural differences in spatial perception and behavior resulted in his coining the word "proxemics." Ned and his wife, Mildred, researched and wrote about intercultural relations for business and government. Their two most well known books are, Hidden Differences: Doing Business with the Japanese and Understanding Cultural Differences: Germans, French and Americans. Mildred R. Hall passed away in 1994, and in 2004, Ned married his loving partner of 8 years, Karin Bergh. Students and colleagues worldwide adored Ned. They sought his advice and blessing from the ends of the earth. He was one of those rare people who was generous with himself, his knowledge and his experience. There was little that Ned hadn't attempted during his lifetime. He designed and built his first house, making the adobe bricks with his own hands. He maintained and restored his cars. He learned the art of photography so that he could capture the magnificent New Mexico landscape and architecture. He hiked the mountains of New Mexico and, at the age of 60, learned to fly his own Beech Craft airplane. All his life, he was an excellent horseman and rode until the age of 87. He was an inspiration and true model for anyone he met. His father, Edward T. Hall Sr., his mother Jessie G.Warneke, his stepfather, Heinz Warneke, his wife, Mildred, his daughter, Ellen, his sister, Delight D. Rothe and brother, Richard W. Hall preceded Ned in death. Ned is survived by his wife, Karin B. Hall, his sister Priscilla Waters Norton of CT, his son, Eric R. Hall of ABQ, his grandson, Edward T. Hall III of ABQ, a niece, Lillian Dick of RI, his nephews, Ernst Rothe of NY, Eigil Rothe of VA, Greg Hall of VA, John Hall of IL, Levin L. (Quint) Waters of Nantucket, Jonathan B. Waters of CT, a grandniece, Emilie Waters of CT, his grandnephews, Chris Hall of NJ, Nathaniel L. Waters of MA and Asa K. Waters of MA. HEIN -- Sarah Ellen Smith, 82, of Albuquerque went home to the Lord on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 surrounded by her family. She was born to Leland Alexander and Leslie Faye Wood Smith, on December 14, 1926 in Sam Fordyce, Texas and was raised in Mission, Texas. Sarah married Carl Richard Hein of Pharr, Texas after stealing his favorite jacket and later his heart. Sarah and Carl traveled the U.S. as an Air Force family in a variety of vehicles and gypsy camp trailers always staying with friends and family. Sarah never met a stranger and had family scattered from Mississippi to Washington State. In 1967 the final Air Force duty station brought Sarah and family from Anchorage, Alaska to Albuquerque, NM where Asbury UMC became their church home for over 30 years. Her life's passions involved her family and church. Sarah was a member of United Methodist Women, rang hand bells, sang in choirs, taught Sunday school and baked many pies for the Asbury Cafe. She taught Sunday school for so long that she taught the children of children. Sarah drove the streets of Albuquerque with a vengeance delivering her kids to the four winds. She ran a tight schedule making sports, music and scout runs long before the age of the hurried child. Sarah was the matriarch of the kitchen whether camping or at home. Mealtimes together usually involved applesauce, spirited discussions and at least one spilt glass. The four children fondly remember chicken potpies, bologna, spaghettios and wooden spoons. Carl, her husband of 51 years, precedes her in death, as do her parents and infant brother Wallace David. Sarah is survived by her brother LTC Harlan Dean Smith (USAF ret.) of San Antonio, TX; sister Betty Lee Trotti of Jackson, MS; daughter Cheryl Lynne and husband COL Stanley W. Johnston Jr. (Army ret.) of Corrales, NM; son MAJ David Richard (USAF ret.) and wife Nancy of Roswell, NM; son William Leland and wife Penny of Rio Rancho, NM; and son MAJ Edward Neal (Army ret.) of Rio Rancho, NM. Six grandsons fondly remember Chama train rides, Uncle Cliff's and homemade ice cream. They are CPT Owen Richard Hein (USAF) of Harrah, OK; Levi Robert Hein of Justin, TX; CPL Travis Judge Johnston (U.S. Army) of Hunter Army Airfield, GA; SPC4 Trevor Warren Johnston (NM Army National Guard) of Corrales, NM; Nicholas Vincent Hein and Patrick Maxwell Hein of Rio Rancho, NM. The family wishes to express their tremendous thanks to the staff of Haven Care Dogwood House and Zia Hospice for the extended family love, care, compassion and understanding given their mother in the final years of her life. MCDOWELL -- MARY JANE, 72, was born in August, 1936 in Oklahoma City and passed away in Albuquerque in June, 2009. Mary Jane was a teacher, one remembered fondly by hundreds of former students, those she taught as recently as earlier this year back to her beginning years in Houston in the late fifties.
