AKIN -- Laurie Ann Akin, 49, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, went home on Saturday, April 25, 2009. She is survived by her birth father Ralph Bongard; sister Susan Willecke and husband Lynn; brother John Bongard and wife Jodie; sister Diana Branstetter; sister Rhonda Prideaux; step-brother Ronald Akin; and her legal guardian Patricia Shattuck and husband Sam; many nieces; nephews; and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother Margaret Akin. Laurie will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her. BAKER -- Raymond (Ray) Baker a resident of Albuquerque since September 1953 passed away at his home on April 25, 2009 after a hard fought battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 66 years, Ardie; daughter Karone Finger and husband Denny of Kansas; son Gary Baker and wife Fran of Virginia; grandchildren Amy Quick and Chad Baker both of Virginia; and one great granddaughter Addison also of Virginia; brother Lloyd Baker; sisters Erma Matthews and Naomi Hamilton of Oklahoma; sister in-law Laverta Moon; nieces, nephews and many friends and church family. Ray was preceded in death by his sister Muriel Sellers and his brother in-law Jack Hamilton. He was born in Catoosa, Oklahoma on a farm where he picked cotton, milked cows and worked odd jobs to survive the Great Dustbowl Era. Upon graduation from High School in 1937, he hitchhiked to Fresno, California, to work in the grape and cotton fields. After a year, he returned home on a Greyhound bus. In April of 1938 he joined the Navy and was aboard the USS Curtiss in Pearl Harbor manning a machine gun during the Japanese attack. Ray spent World War II in the Pacific - Wake Island, Guam, Espiritu Santo Island, Solomon Islands, Iwo Jima, Kwajalein, Eenwatak for the atomic bomb testing, Marshall Islands, Okinawa, Midway, Fiji and Samoa. After several assignments including Cartagena, Colombia, the Navy sent Ray to Sandia Base in 1953 for duty at the Special Weapons Program. He remained in Albuquerque after his retirement from the Navy and began a successful second career at the Federal Aviation Agency. Following his time with FAA, Ray became interested in investments and worked with St. Paul Mutual Funds and other retirement vehicles. Ray married his lifetime love and soul mate Ardie on June 26, 1943. He was President of the Albuquerque Chapter of the Pearl Harbor Survivors, an active member of Christ United Methodist Church of Albuquerque, Eastern Star, Scottish Rite of Santa Fe Lodge of Perfection, Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple, the Fleet Reserve Association, the National Association of Security Dealers and was a third degree Mason. Ray enjoyed golf, family, golf, friends, and golf. Family and friends may visit French Mortuary, Lomas location, on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 10 a.m. at French Lomas Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd., NE, Albuquerque. COOK -- William August "Bill" Cook passed away at home in Lansing, NY on Friday, April 24, 2009 at the age of 80. Born March 23, 1929 in Montague, MA, he was a son of the late Charles V. and Wanda A. (Stark) Cook, Sr. After graduation from Greenfield High School in Massachusetts, Bill attended Springfield College in Springfield, MA where he earned his undergraduate degree, and earned his masters degree from Columbia Teachers' College. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Bill was a dedicated teacher and school administrator in a variety of locations in the northeast. He and his family settled in Bourne, MA, where he retired after serving 30 years in public education. Bill and his wife, Billie, resided in Albuquerque from 1990-1999. Bill was a life-long Red Sox fan and an avid runner, marathoner, gardener and bridge player. While in Albuquerque he enjoyed participating in the Roadrunners Club and the over 55 softball league. He also volunteered for the New Mexico Activities Association. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Bonnie (Jim) Blair of Lansing, NY, Jacqueline (Peter) Greaney of Columbia MD, and Beth Cook of Alexandria, VA; a son, Charles (Julie) Cook of Springfield, VA; grandchildren Marie & Amy Greaney; Billy, Charlie, Emily & Danny Cook; and James & Carly Blair. Bill is also survived by two brothers, Charles V. Cook, Jr. of Greenfield, MA and Craig S. (Nina) Cook of Buckeye, AZ. DI SCIORIO -- John C. Di Sciorio, 76, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past 25 years, passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2009. John was born September 22, 1932 the son of John and Lucy Raggazzino Di Sciorio in Yonkers, New York. He retired from the Yonkers New York Police Department as a Detective, before moving to New Mexico and then worked as the Director of Security for American Furniture in Albuquerque before retiring. He was a former member of Blue Knights of Rio Rancho and Albuquerque; former member of the Star Motorcycle Club of Rio Rancho; and a member of the Rio Rancho Stamp Club. John is survived by his wife of 25 years, Margaret Di Sciorio of Rio Rancho; children, Lisa Joyce and husband Rick of Rio Rancho, Chris Davidson and wife Maria of Rio Rancho, John Di Sciorio and wife Kathy of New York, and James Di Sciorio and wife Maureen of New York; ten grandchildren; two sisters, Grace Fanelli of Rio Rancho, NM and Marion Miozzi of New York; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Anthony Di Sciorio; two brothers, Frank Di Sciorio and Joseph Di Sciorio; and two brothers-in-law, Joseph Fanelli and Michael Miozzi. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at 11:00 a.m., at the Church of the Risen Savior, 7701 Wyoming Blvd., Albuquerque, with Father Jerry Plotkowski as the celebrant. GLAZE -- Tressie Mae Coburn . We celebrate the life of Tressie Mae Coburn Glaze who passed on to Eternal life on Friday, April 24, 2009, just shy of reaching 99 years of age. Tressie was born in Hamilton, TX to Dee and Susanna Coburn on July 6, 1910. She came from Texas to New Mexico with her family in 1915 by train and covered wagon to homestead in Gladstone, NM. She lived in Gladstone for 11 years before moving to Raton, NM. In 1931 Tressie met and married "the most handsome man in the world", Ora William Glaze in Raton, NM. Nine months later the couple moved to Albuquerque. Tressie's grandfather was a circuit-rider preacher for the Methodist Church of Northern New Mexico during the homestead years. This could account for her strong Christian faith and membership in the Central United Methodist Church since 1934. She was a homemaker and worked for 17 years at Blackburn's and Woodruff-Julian's women's apparel. Tressie enjoyed playing games, square dancing and playing the piano. She treasured time with family and friends and will always be remembered for her wonderful cooking, hospitality and sweet nature. Tressie was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother and is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and her husband of 61 years. Left to cherish Tressie's memory are her children, Susanna Jean Maydew of Albuquerque and Owen William Glaze and wife, Laurie, of Houston, TX; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Monica Dickerson of Houston, TX, Mark Glaze of Houston, TX, Susan and Sam Wilson of Estancia, NM, Steven and Gina Pannell of Las Cruces, NM, Sandra and David Schindler of Mesa, AZ, Randall Paul and Allis Maydew of Dallas, TX, Barbara Maydew and Kevin Buescher of Los Alamos, NM; 12 great-grandchildren; four nephews; two nieces; and her sister, Lois Fornoff of Arkansas. GUZMAN -- Erlinda B. Guzman, 77, passed away April 26, 2009. She was born November 16, 1931 in Willard, NM, to Valentin and Julianita (Cordova) Baca. Erlinda is survived by her five children, Mary Luna and her husband Jimmie, of Pandora, TX, Lupe Zamora, of Capitan, NM, Julia Salas and her husband Luis, of Torreon, NM, Cruz Glass and her husband Carl, of Kermit, TX, Valentin Guzman and his wife Cecelia, of Aurora, CO; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Bonifacio Baca and his wife Paula, of Albuquerque, NM. Erlinda was preceded in death by her son, Alex; and her parents. She was a life resident of Willard, NM. She was a member of Our Lady of Sorrow Catholic church in Willard, NM. HAYS -- Gerry Hays, age 64, a resident of Albuquerque, N.M., passed away during the morning of April 25, 2009. He is survived by his wife Kathy; his sons Tad, Peter, Joe and Jack; his daughter-in-law Krystal; his grandchildren Trevor, Terran and Keira; his mother Lovilda; his sister Sharon; and his parents-in-law Sam and Vi. He worked at Sandia National Laboratories for his entire professional career. For the majority of his career he was a research scientist and research manager specializing in plasma physics and for the latter part of his career he was an ombudsman at-large for the laboratories. He loved the outdoors and was a member, volunteer and leader within the Boy Scouts of America for the state of New Mexico. He loved to travel with his wife and children on backpacking trips in the wilderness and on cruises around the world. He loved to read, to observe and to experiment, and to work with his hands. HEWES -- Jennie Louise Francis Hewes, 94, a resident of Albuquerque and formerly of El Paso, TX, passed away on April 25, 2009. She was a graduate of El Paso High School and attended Saul Ross College in Alpine, TX, and the College of Mines in El Paso. She attended every season of the El Paso Symphony Orchestra until she moved to Albuquerque, 10 years ago, to be with her family. After retiring from the El Paso public school system in 1977, she enjoyed family, friends, and travel. She attended St. Clement's Episcopal Church for many years where she sang in the choir and where her nephew William S. Francis is Associate Pastor. She is survived by her sons, Ted R. Hewes of Pena Blanca, NM and Dan L Hewes of Albuquerque; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Ann Wilson; two grandsons, Reed and Bryant Hewes of Albuquerque; granddaughter, Kristina Whentworth of Seaside; and four great-grandchildren. KICK -- Mary A. Kick, passed away April 26, 2009. She was born in Hornell, NY on June 2, 1940 and was raised in Buffalo, NY. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert D. Kick in 1990. Mary was a resident of Rio Rancho, NM since 1979. Mary was an LPN for St. Joseph's Rehab and the CVA and the brain injury unit for 21 years. She is survived by her daughters, Deborah Frenzel and husband David of Hamburg, NY, June Hubbard and husband Lovell of Albuquerque, NM, Arlene Kazar and husband Russell of Rio Rancho, NM; one son Lawrence Kick and wife Jamie of Rio Rancho, NM; eight grandchildren, Robert, Jennifer, Linda, Tiffany, Russell, Ryan, Tylor, Herbert, and Brandon; five great-grandchildren, Jordan, Joshua, Logan, David, and Ryan. Cremation will take place at Riverside Mortuary. No services will be held. My time has come to leave behind the pain and heartache of life. I am now poised ready to spread my wings and take flight to soar high towards the warmth and comfort of the light that beckons me. And once there I will be reunited with my loved ones who went before me and find complete peace. For those I leave behind, do not shed tears of grief, draw comfort and peace knowing I reached a better place and remember the memories of our life together and believe in the promise that we will one day be together again in the afterlife. MADRID -- Luis R. Madrid, 66, a lifetime resident of New Mexico, passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 46 years Evangelina V. ORTEGA -- Jose Ortega, 69, a resident of Bernalillo, went to meet the Lord on Saturday, April 25, 2009 after having the opportunity to say goodbye to his family. Jose grew up in Santa Fe; and relocated to Albuquerque to raise his children. He retired from the United States Postal Service after 34 years of service; and after being a privileged member of the United States Army. He was proud to be a Veteran. Jose was an active member of Church of the Incarnation. He enjoyed building and working on his adobe home in Bernalillo as well as being surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arturo and Josephita Ortega; brother, Arturo, Jr. and sister, Mary Trainor. Jose is survived by his son, Arthur and wife Yvonne; daughter, Monica Martinez; and his significant other, Corine Fox; grandchildren, Andy, Arthur (Arty), Stephanie, and Matthew Ortega, Favian and Melissa Sedillo, Michael and Marcus Martinez; and great-granddaughters, Shonel and Saniah Nelsen; sisters, Rose Ortega, Frances Jaramillo and husband Joe, Emily Griego and husband Jimmy, Patsy Ortega Chavez; many godchildren; nephews, and nieces. SANCHEZ -- Mike F. Sanchez "Babe", a native New Mexican, born on Nov 25, 1923, passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2009, at his home where he lived for 51 years. Mr. Sanchez is survived by his sons, Pastor Robert Sanchez and wife, Susan, of Riverside, CA, Michael Sanchez and wife, Pat, of Las Vegas, NV, and Joseph Sanchez and wife, Pam, of Bernalillo; his brother, Joe Sanchez; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Antonia Maria Teresa Aguilar Sanchez, and his parents, Felipe and Anacita. Babe was a World War II Army Veteran and a Purple Heart recipient. He loved God, his country, his family, and his many friends. He was very involved in Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Community, his neighborhood, and many organizations. SCHULZ -- Carl Francis Schulz, age 91, peacefully passed away April 25, 2009 while in a nursing facility where he had been due to serious, multiple infections. He was born October 21, 1917 in Denver, CO, son of Adolph and Elsie. Moving to Albuquerque in the early 1920's, he has been a resident ever since, except for 10 years, just before and after WW II, when he, his wife (Betty) and son lived in Los Angeles. In his early years he graduated from Albuquerque High School, sang in the Albuquerque Boys Choir when it was founded, and hopped freight trains to ride into town to school. As father, he instilled some of those favorite things in his son, Carl Jr., such as singing in the Albuquerque Boys Choir (in the '50s) and love of railroads (and Lionel trains). He loved hunting and fishing and was active supporting his son and others in Boy Scouts, taking them on many campouts. Once his son was on his own, Carl married Frances Carter, who was his wife for 47 years, until passing in 2006. With her he was involved in many of her charitable activities and numerous travels around the country and world. He was a plumber since WW II (plumbing the 1st 60+ homes in Rio Rancho), a member of Local 412, a Mason (Zia Daylight Lodge #77 AF&AM) and a member of the American Legion. Carl is survived by his son, Carl Jr. and spouse Gloria, now a resident in Bernalillo; three grandchildren Richard Schulz, Antonia Todd and Carla Oyster; plus great grandchildren; and great-great grandchildren; his sister Jeannette Hagood and numerous nieces and nephews, the Carter family in California. SEDILLO -- Benny L. Sedillo Jr. Benny went Home to our Lord on April 13, 2009 at age 52. Benny was born December 17, 1956 in Albuquerque, New Mexico at Kirtland Air Force Base to Benito and Anita Sedillo. Benny Jr. is survived by his mother Anita Sedillo; two sons, Staff Sergeant Jordan L. Sedillo and wife Nicole and granddaughter Lorelai, Eli Sedillo and girlfriend Diana Biendenback; brother Herman I. Sedillo and seven sisters; Mary, Margaret, Theresa, Lupita, Gloria Sedillo, Yolanda Pippin and Husband Craig , Sylvia Rivera; eight nephews, 11 niece, four great-nephews, three great-nieces. He is preceded in death by his father Benito Sedillo; nephew Michael P. Sanchez. Benny was a simple down to earth guy. He enjoyed playing his guitar, hunting and outdoor life. He worked at Kohlhaas many years as a welder building huge Tanks. He was also a home builder like his father. Benny will be deeply missed by family and friends. SICKELS -- Mary Sickels, 72, a resident of Albuquerque since 1946, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2009. She is survived by her sisters Fran Berglund and husband, Dale, Patricia Salge and husband, Gerry, all of Albuquerque; brothers, Fred McAchran and wife, Betty of Virginia Beach, VA, Robert McAchran and wife, Karen of Aztec, NM; sister-in-law, Julie McAchran, and many nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Sickels, and brother, Wayne McAchran. Mrs. Sickels worked for Wal-Mart for 18 years where she will be remembered by many as the friendly person who greeted them. She had a passion for knitting and she donated countless caps, booties and blankets to newborns at local hospitals. TINSMITH -- Catherine "Kay" Robin Tinsmith, age 94, born in North Wales, PA to the late Henri and Mary O'Neill Robin and a longtime resident of Peralta, NM, passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2009. She worked for Sandia Corporation as a computer operator, retiring in 1976. After retirement, she devoted many hours of volunteer work at RCI Enterprise of Albuquerque for the benefit of mentally challenged people, while volunteering she wrote Mrs. T's Cookbook. She taught reading in a literacy program and helped with the Brother Mathias Benefit and the Jerry Lewis Telethon. Catherine loved traveling, horseback riding, and arts and crafts. In later years, she learned woodcarving at the Highland Senior Center and exhibited at the New Mexico State Fair. She will be greatly missed by her family. She was preceded in death by her five brothers; one sister and husband, Herbert Tinsmith; and son-in-law, Richard Bader. Catherine is survived by her brother, Benjamin Robin of Los Lunas, NM; daughter, Carolyn Bader of Peralta; son, James Tinsmith and wife, Kathy of Sellersville, PA; four grandchildren, Jeff Bader and wife, Donna of Albuquerque, Barry Bader and wife, Lori Anne of Phoenix, AZ, Kimberly Lockett and husband, Jeff of PA, Dana Gigler and husband, Jim of PA; and six great-grandchildren, Chelsea Bader, Tess Bader, Richard Craig Bader, Graham Lockett, Erin Lockett and Jack Gigler. TURNER -- Marjorie Olive Turner, 74, passed away surrounded by her loving family on April 22, 2009. Born in Needham Market, Suffolk, England, she met her husband Ron at the RAF Station in Wattisham, and they were married in 1955. Ron and Marjorie lived all over the world, including France, the Netherlands, and Virginia, before settling in Albuquerque in 1998. Marjorie was gifted in making quilts and ceramic pottery, and enjoyed travelling. Marjorie is predeceased by her brother Roy Peck. She is survived by her husband Ron Turner; children Kim Turner, Caron Mays and husband Duane; and grandchildren Katie and Sam. ZIMMERMAN -- Mary Margaret Zimmerman, 99, of Albuquerque, passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2009. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was born in Denver, CO on March 26, 1910. Margaret was married to Edward Shacklette and following his death, she married Aubrey Hanks. After Mr. Hanks passed away, Margaret married George J. Zimmerman on February 17, 1987. He passed away on February 24, 1997. Margaret was a member of the Pythian Order and had served as Past Grand Chancellor to the Sunshine Girls.
