So all I have are the memories of the love we had while you were mine. Like being the first boy to give you Valentine chocolates when you were just 14, then taking you on a date. When we returned at 4:30, and parked in front of your house, your mother flashed the porch light to let you know it was time to come in. I said to you jokingly, "if we were married, you wouldn't have to go in so early." You took me seriously. So, by the next Valentine's you were my beautiful 15 year old fiancee, so I gave you candy, flowers, and jewelry. The next Valentine, you were my wife, and I gave you candy, flowers, and jewelry for the rest of your life. Our love and passion lasted for the next 53 years, until July 13, 2006 as I held your hand on your deathbed, your eyes closed. I looked up to Heaven and your mother flashed the light and said "Sherry, it's time to come in," your soul drifted up to Heaven, leaving me alone and heartbroken. BOWERS -- Eloise W. Bowers, 74, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and long time resident of Albuquerque, passed away February 11, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband Ronald L. Bowers USAF Retired; sister, Mildred Boggs and her brother Mac Watts. Eloise is survived by her children; Alan Bowers his wife Mary and their children A.J. Bowers and Ashley Bowers, Mark Bowers his wife Kathleen and their sons Jason Bowers his wife Trish and John Bowers; daughter Ronda Wolfe her husband Riley and their daughter Haley; one great-grandchild, Alyssa; brothers Horace Watts and wife Lillian of Pennsylvania and Fred Watts and wife Alese of Delaware and her sister in law Mildred "Sugarfoot" Watts of Virginia. Eloise was the devoted wife of a United States Air Force Veteran. She enjoyed her job delivering newspapers for The Albuquerque Journal for over ten years. She was an avid crafter and seamstress. She loved cooking for her grandchildren, reading and enjoyed watching classic movies. Cremation has taken place. A family Memorial Service will take place. CRUZ -- Cecilia Emerald Cruz, 92, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 11, 2009. She is survived by her 11 children; 32 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; five great-great- grandchildren; two sisters; and one brother. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband; son; grandson; and a great-grandson. She was a member of Our Lady of Assumption Church for 54 years, and also a member and a volunteer of the Princess Jeanne Senior Center. We don't have the words to express the joy we have that God chose us to be your children. We can only hope to be half the parents to our children as you've been to us. You gave so much to all of us and yet you never asked for anything in return. We may not have said it as often as we should have, but we all loved you deeply. She was dearly loved by her family and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Rosary will be recited Friday, February 13, 2009, 6:30 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Chapel. DAWSON -- Dave Dawson, age 48, a resident of Los Lunas, NM, passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 in a weather related rollover. He was preceded in death by his father, James Dawson. Dave is survived by his significant other, Darlene Valencia of many years; two daughters, Amber and fiance, Dale of Arizona and Kimber and husband, JR., of Arizona; step-children, JohnnieAnn and Santana and fiancee, Lanessa of Los Lunas; mother, Margaret Dawson; three sisters, Kathy and significant other, Mike of California MaryAnn and husband, John of California and Patti and husband, Santiago of Colorado; granddaughter, Kaitlyn of Arizona; and two step-grandchildren, Geleio and Tiana of Los Lunas. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and other family members. GARBIN -- Elida Garbin, 66, passed away on February 12, 2009. She was born May 24, 1942 in La Chorrera, Panama to Manuel and Elodia (Montero) Esturain. Elida was a resident of Albuquerque for 37 years. She retired as an LPN, also loved to shop and garden. Elida had unconditional love as a wife, mother and grandmother. She was a most caring and giving person. Elida is survived by her loving husband, H. Douglas Garbin; son and daughter in law, John and Danielle, and their daughter Victoria Coon; daughter and son in law, Caroline and Daryl Strong, and their son, Dylan Strong; brother and sister in law, Ronald and Mary Lou Garbin and their son Eric Garbin; brothers, Jose Alfonso Esturain, Luis Ernesto Esturain; sisters, Lilia Maria Esturain; niece, Olga and Juan Arguello, and their son, John Arguello; nephew, Gustavo Esturain; niece, Yaneth and Heriberto Acosta, and their children, Aaron, Amanda and Arianna; and numerous nieces and nephews in Panama. GARCIA -- Marty P. Garcia, 51, resident of Albuquerque, passed away Wednesday, February 11, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Sally Garcia; sons, Marty Jr. and Fabian Garcia; grandchildren, Bella, Joseph, and Allysa Garcia; sisters, Carmen Haddock and Anna Clum and husband, Jarod; mother and father-in-law, Mike and Porfiria Andozola; brothers and sisters-in-law, Patsy Carrassco and husband, Abel, Elsie Zambrano, and Mike Andozola Jr.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brother, Ronnie Garcia. Marty served four years in the Naval Reserve on USS Simon Lake, and was a 20 year employee of Bernalillo, County where he made many friends. KARNAFEL -- Arlene Frances "Zelda" Karnafel June 18, 1946 - February 14, 2001 Zelda It may have been on Valentine's day when I met Arlene and her friend Freddy (Elfrieda) in 1968, the last year she attended the University of Wisconsin. At that moment, I mistook feeling the ground shift beneath my feet for something other than huge and permanent shift in direction my life was about to take. It may have been on Valentine's Day in 1969 when I went to Albuquerque for a few hours to see if this new direction could not be changed. For the first time in 40 years I'm in Albuquerque. October 6, 2008 for three days of work related conference at the Hilton, Menual & University. The last evening I walked to UNM, on several accosted persons' advice, dinner at El Patio De Albuquerque on Harvard, l feel Arlene present. Over the years, Arlene, in my mind more than monthly, her name Googled periodically. After working the polling place last week, thinking of being in Grant Park 40 years before, expense report completing online, yet again I Google her name. Nothing new, seen it often before, listing shows 1916 & Zelda, surely someone else, but this time I follow the link... My heart breaks again, and goes out to those who knew and were close to her, as my memories of 40 years, a mere eight, can not dim the brightness. Valentine's Day now redefined, I offer comfort, especially to the sister I never met and may have never known I existed. A short life was not her correct fate, nor yours, her absence, whatever the cause. This week past, hugely conflicted, perhaps the greatest of my life, for happiness, health, family and goodness have always been my wishes for Arlene and her life. Zelda? The name, let alone its referent, buried so deep, nearly faded to gone. Some memories hold substantially true for 40+ years, but "Zelda" comes as a name made up by summer of '68 roommates, Carl and Jill. I slept in the kitchen, the apartment with only that, a bathroom (my occasional bedroom to give Carl and Jill privacy) and theirs, the one other room. Arlene, working on Michigan Avenue, was there only rarely. Is anyone left knowing when/why Arlene became Zelda? Will they Google my name and help with the closure I forlornly seek? KNIGHT -- Wilhelmine Obladen Knight went home to the Lord on Wednesday, February 11, 2009. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Hans; her sister, Marianna; and her grandson, Kenneth Schnoor. Wilhelmine is survived by her husband, Donald C. Knight of the family home in Albuquerque; her three children, son, Tommy and wife, Kathy, of Commerce, GA; daughter, Bonnie and husband Ken, of Albuquerque; and son, Don and wife, Elaine, of Colorado Springs, CO; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two nephews; one niece; and her much love dog, Monet. Wilhelmine was born the third child of Wilhelm Obladen and Anna Simon Obladen in Bad Godesburg, Germany on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 8, 1927. After World War II, working as a German/American Translator, she came to the United States where she met and married on February 23rd, her beloved husband of 57 years, in San Francisco, CA. Wilhelmine dedicated her life to caring for her family and home. After her children were raised and out on their own she started her career in modeling which she continued until 1994. She was a member of Queen of Heaven Catholic Parish and a member of the Catholic Daughters Association. Wilhelmine left behind many wonderful friends and family who she loved and cherished. The Knight family wishes to thank everyone for their prayers, love and support during her illness. Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 14, 2009, 12:00 noon, at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 5311 Phoenix Ave. NE. LUCERO -- Pete A. Lucero, 95, life long resident of New Mexico, currently living in Albuquerque, passed away on February 12, 2009. He is survived by his daughter Patricia Ann Lucero and husband William Jackson; sons, Pedro Adolfo Lucero and wife Santana, and Tomas Luis Lucero and wife Linda; grandchildren, Anna Tromp and husband Dirck, Catherine Provencal and husband Robert, Donia Sabus and husband Ted, John Lucero, Joshua Lucero and wife Cynthia, Erin Lucero, Brandon Lucero, and Ryan Lucero; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Juanita "Jane" Candelaria of Albuquerque, and Corine Gallegos of Vaughn and numerous nieces, nephews, and a large extended family. Pete was preceded in death by his loving wife of 40 years, Ramona G. Lucero; and his sister Maryanne Tenorio. He will always be remembered as a loving father and grandfather. Pete was a successful business owner in Vaughn. He was a decorated veteran of WWII where he proudly served with the US Army. Pete was very active in the Catholic Church, as well as various community organizations. PERALTA -- Mercedes Maria Anita Tomisita Chavez de Peralta, 91, of Albuquerque, NM, died, Thursday, February 12, 2009. Mercedes was a meek, wonderful loving wife, sister, mother of four, grandmother of ten, great-grandmother of fourteen and great-great-grandmother of two. SANCHEZ -- Meliton "Mel" P. Sanchez, age 69, a life-long resident of Tome, NM passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 with his wife and other family members at his side. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tome. Meliton played lead guitar for the 10:00 a.m. choir in Tome for over 30 years. He was also there at the church for whatever was needed of him. Mel used his musical gift of playing the guitar to ease family sorrows at rosaries and mass, along with playing at many other functions. He retired from the AT & SF Railroad in 1995, after 34 years of outstanding service. Mel worked in Barstow, CA and Albuquerque, NM, then retiring out of Topeka, KA. His love for music carried over into his retirement opening Mel's Music Enterprise in 1991. He saw a need in and around the Belen and Los Lunas area for a music store that catered to the area musicians. He was preceded in death by his father, Florenio "Lolo" R. Sanchez; son, Milton Lee Sanchez; sister, Natividad Gurule; brother, Frank Sanchez; and grandmother, Emilia Marquez. Meliton is survived by his loving wife of 28 years Eva; three loving daughters, Kat RunningWolf, Viola Arbuckle and husband, Guy and Angela Norman and husband, Mark; loving mother, Esquipula Sanchez; five loving grandchildren, Lawrence Moya-Placencia, Joseph RunningWolf, Erica Hammerick, Brittane and Lauran Arbuckle; five great-grandchildren; one loving brother, Ray Sanchez and wife, Darlene; and one very special nephew, Ramon Sanchez. He is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews. All Services will be held at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in Tome beginning with a viewing on Sunday, February 15, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 4:00 p.m. A final visitation will be held on Monday, February 16, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. with a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Tome Catholic Cemetery. SARGENT -- Gordon Stanley Sargent was born August 27, 1934 in Panguitch, Utah to D. Ned and Edna Heaps Sergeant, both deceased. He is survived by his wife, Lea; step-daughter, Karen Klar both of Albuquerque; daughter, Beth Ricks of San Antonio, TX and his brother, Sheldon Sargent of Linden, UT. Gordon grew up and attended school in Cedar City, UT. He graduated from Utah State University in 1957 and was commissioned in the US Air Force. Gordon stayed in the Air Force until 1979. He was in VietNam from 1970 to 1971 and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and six Air Medals for his VietNam Tour of Duty. He met and married the former Lea Marshall of Albuquerque in 1981, in Phoenix, AZ. In 1985, they moved to Albuquerque. Gordon had his own tax preparation business from 1987 to 1996. As well, Gordon managed his wife's cocktail lounge, Nu-Lea's Lounge, from 1992 to 1996. Of the 12 states and countries in which he lived, he liked Albuquerque the best. WERNER -- Mary Werner, 89, wife of Colonel Crowell B. Werner, passed away February 8, 2009. She was born January 1, 1920 in Dayton, Ohio to Oscar Benjamin and Ella Giele Reemelin. Mary graduated from Oakwood High School and Western University. In May 1946, she married her husband and spent 25 as a military wife at various Air Force bases throughout the U.S., including Kirtland AFB from 1965-1968. Upon her husband's retirement in 1971, they returned permanently to Albuquerque. She was an active golfer and bridge player at Tanoan Country Club and was a band member of the Daughters of the Nile. Survivors include her loving husband; three sons, Michael and wife Jo Karen, Derby, KS, Lt. Col (AF retired) Patrick, Waltham, MA, Jeffery A. and wife Susan Lasko, Santa Cruz, CA; brother, Robert E. Reemelin, Dayton, OH; and four granddaughters; plus four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother Benjamin G. Reemelin of Oak Park, FL. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, February 28, 2009, at 2:00 p.m., at the Ballot Adyad Shrine Center.
