QUINTANA -- Dr. Frances Leon Quintana Surrounded by loving family and free of illness or pain, noted anthropologist Dr. Frances Leon (Swadesh) Quintana passed away at the age of 91 on January 16, 2009, in an Albuquerque residential facility. She was a pioneer, expanding the frontiers of what was possible for women of her generation, as well as a teacher, and a faithful wife and mother. Born in Irvington-on-Hudson in 1917 to Maurice Leon and his wife, Frances Juliana Webster Goodrich, Dr. Quintana attended the Ecole Internationale de Geneve. She graduated at age 15, and entered Vassar College after a year at art school. While still a student, Dr. Quintana came to New Mexico in 1936 to excavate the ruins at Chaco Canyon. She studied at Yale with linguist Edward Sapir, who described how language shapes our experience of the world. After one year, Dr. Quintana went to Mexico to work among the Tarascan and Otomi peoples with Dr. Morris Swadesh. She transcribed native languages into written form and instructed students into literacy as part of the reforms of the Lazaro Cardenas presidency. For her doctorate at Colorado University, Quintana worked in the Southern Ute area. Her work was published in 2004 as Ordeal of Change: The Southern Utes and their Neighbors. Dr. Quintana served as Curator of Ethnology at the Laboratory of Anthropology in Santa Fe, producing exhibits and teacher training materials on topics such as The Lands of New Mexico and Toys and Games of New Mexico. At the time, there were no Hispanics or Native Americans among the senior staff of the Museum of New Mexico. Thanks in part to the leadership of Dr. Quintana, this failing was redressed. She gladly took risks to her career to speak truth to the powerful in defense of the powerless. Her professional papers have been made available to the public through the Rocky Mountain Online Archive by the Center of Southwest Research at the University of New Mexico. Following her retirement in 1978, she married Miguel Quintana, with whom she shared 22 joyful years, living in Aztec, NM and vacationing at the seaside in Mexico. She continued to work, reissuing Los Primeros Pobladores (Notre Dame Press), in a reader-friendly edition called Pobladores. Her first passion, however, was her family, for whom she did many kindnesses. Her passing was infinitely gentle, as befits a woman who lived in the true pattern of Christ. She was predeceased by daughter Marta; and is survived by sons Pablo, Vidal, and Joel, and by daughters Victoria Ann, Rosa, Daisy, and Deborah. An announcement on the memorial service, to be held in the spring, will follow.

STOUT -- Frances Elizabeth Stout died peacefully on December 21, 2008, the winter solstice. "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die." John 11:25-26. Frances was born Frances Elizabeth Broyles on October 17, 1918 to Ethyl Frances Swan and Watkins A. Broyles in Bethany, Missouri. She was delivered by her grandfather, Dr. Franklin Broyles. Frances was inspired at an early age by her grandfather, father, aunt and uncle to pursue a career in medicine. Frances graduated from Bethany High School in 1936 and matriculated at Wellesley College where her aunt, Dr. Elizabeth Broyles, was the resident physician. She graduated in 1940 with a degree in chemistry and moved to Chicago where she was one of four women admitted by Northwestern Medical School. Frances met her future husband, James Stout, there and they were married on December 28, 1941. Once married, Frances left medical school, but her interest in medicine never abated. She received a Master's degree in the young science of neurology and published research on the regeneration of nerve tissue. In 1952 Frances and Jim moved to Albuquerque, which would be her beloved home for the rest of her life. Here she raised her family and became an active and valued member of the community, with great interest in antiques and gardening. Although Jim's death just 10 days before their fortieth wedding anniversary caused Frances great sorrow, the quarter century by which she survived him was full of event and adventure. She reconnected with the medical profession, enthusiastically serving for over 10 years as an assistant to Dr. Don Pichler. She traveled extensively, including to Syria, Finland, France, and climbed the Great Wall of China. She was a lively and devoted grandmother to her three granddaughters. Frances was a member of PEO for nearly 70 years, and was a founding member of Chapter AD in Albuquerque. Frances was a devout Christian and member of Monte Vista Christian Church for over 50 years. She put her great love of gardening and flowers to the service of the church and arranged the flowers for Sunday services for over 20 years and was active in Faith's Journey and the Searchers Sunday School class. Frances is survived by daughter Margaret Stout Whiting and son-in-law Robert Whiting of Espoo, Finland, and son David Stout and daughter-in-law Mary Malwitz of Albuquerque; and three granddaughters Marlena Whiting, Kelly Stout and Johanna Stout, and brothers Dan Broyles and Gerald Broyles. The family requests that you remember Frances by making a donation to Albuquerque Healthcare for the Homeless, PO Box 25445, Albuquerque, NM 87125. The family plans a Memorial Service at Monte Vista Christian Church in April. Please visit our online guest book for Frances at RememberTheirStory.com French 1111 University Blvd. NE (505) 843-6333

VON HEUNE -- Dr. Christian Our dear Christian has died. The man we so much respected, revered and loved left suddenly on January 19, 2009. He leaves a powerful legacy in his energy, his strong work ethic, his marveling curiosity, his will to do good, his interest in civil rights, and his great love of the outdoors. Born Christian Berend Johann von Hoyningen-Heune on August 28, 1932 on the beautiful Blumenhagen farm in the rolling hills of Berlin, the warmth of well tended earth gave him a love of gardening, and of the wilderness, that drew him always out of doors. A refugee from the war, his American mother brought the family back to New England where he finished high school at the Woodstock Country School in Vermont, achieved Phi Beta Kappa his junior year, and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, in 1954. Recruited to study medicine at Harvard Medical School, he took his new wife, Jeanne Clark and first son to Cambridge, MA. He received the Maimonides prize his first year at Harvard, graduated in 1958, and became a citizen of the United States in 1959. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, specializing in internal medicine. They moved, now with four children, to Germany in 1962 where he served medical duty as a Captain in the US Air Force at Sembach Air Base. The family traveled extensively throughout Europe, he took up flying for a short time and received his pilot's license, enjoyed photography, visiting castle ruins, and connected again with beloved relatives in Germany. After his tour of duty, the family moved to the wide open spaces of New Mexico in 1965, and he started practice with the renowned Lovelace Clinic. He dedicated himself to his patients, enjoyed work with his colleagues, and often worked the ER. Adventures all around the Southwest on family camping and hiking trips, learning about it's native peoples and places, mountaineering, skiing, rafting, even scuba diving, and as an accomplished sailor lovingly passing on his knowledge to all his children, built his love for New Mexico. His reputation as an intensely compassionate and caring physician grew, he joined a regular broadcast on KNME-TV for a time, to help people understand medical science, and continued to make house calls until his retirement. He was always curious about the world around him, liked to name the peaks he climbed, the native wildlife, and the flowers and trees. He loved music, played the flute and taught us singing in chorus, especially German songs. He was a man of ideas, and continually studied to understand nature and science, politics, and the history of the peoples of the world, was a member of the ACLU, and loved to discuss and share his fascination and concern. He scaled all 54 of Colorado's 14,000 foot peaks at over 50 years of age, made a pact with himself and bagged 65 peaks over 14,000 feet before he was 65, several solo. He also reached the summit of Mexico's 17,802 foot Mt. Popocatepetl. He was an avid snow camper, kept vigorously active, running the La Luz trail, and participated in half marathons up to age 65. In his retirement, he worked tirelessly towards the preservation of the NM environment, volunteered much time at the Cibola National Forest Service, Open Spaces Program, removing graffiti, clearing trails, and leading nature hikes. He was an inspiring docent at the New Mexico Natural History Museum in Albuquerque, where he passed on his enthusiasm for Southwest geology and paleontology to visitors of all ages. Doctor Christian von Huene is survived by six children, Christian Berend Robert of Albuquerque, Sergei Johann of Albuquerque, Gregor of San Jose, CA, Karl-Heinrich of Madison, WI, Andre' Sievers of Taos, NM, Ariadne Marie Barclay of Albuquerque; his first wife Jeanne Clark of Berkeley, CA; his fourth wife Anne Claire of Albuquerque; brother Friedrich of Brookline; sisters Dorothee Greenberg and Sigrid MacRae of New York, Brigitte Reid of Michigan; four grandsons and a granddaughter, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and uncles around the world. We love you Opa, missya, loveya. Services will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 3 p.m., at the First Unitarian Church.
