ARD -- Doris Elaine Ard, 80, longtime resident of Albuquerque, peacefully passed away surrounded by her family on Sunday, October 12, 2008. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Everett; two daughters, Susan Ard and Nancy Kelly and husband, David, all of Albuquerque; four grandchildren, John and Sherry Dobias, and Brent and wife, Mary Kelly, all of Albuquerque, and Brandon Kelly of South Korea; and three great-grandchildren. Doris graduated High School in Joplin, Missouri in 1946, and received her Associate's Degree in Business from Joplin Junior College in 1948. She married Everett Ard in 1948 in Joplin. Doris moved to Albuquerque in 1950 and joined the First Presbyterian Church. She was very active in the church, having served as Head of the Chancel Guild for many years. She also taught Sunday School for a number of years. Doris enjoyed playing bridge with her dear friends, spending time with her grandchildren, and fishing at her Jemez cabin. A special thanks to Jeannett for her care and devotion, and also to Heritage Hospice and Right at Home. CASTILLO -- Louisa M. Castillo, 83, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on October 14, 2008, with her loving family at her side. Mrs. Castillo is survived by her companion, John Gallegos; her daughters, Clementine Kenton and husband, Thomas, Helen Kenton and husband, Bobby, Darlene Castillo and Tomas Trejo, and Ida Castillo; her sister, Esther Garcia and husband, Salomon; her brother, Gillie Vaisa and wife, Jolene; her daughter-in-law, Maria Castillo; 19 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mrs. Castillo was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Maria Vaisa; her sons, Herman, Jimmy, and Bobby; her daughter, Theresa; grandchildren, Tabitha, Jimmy and Danny; and her great-grandchildren, Samantha, Matilda, Veronica, Desiree and Domiana. Mrs. Castillo was a member of the Catholic Church. Visitation will be Thursday, October 16, 2008, from 6:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 562 Atrisco SW. CONTRERAS -- Yolanda C. Contreras "Que Linda" was born March 1, 1956 in Albuquerque, NM. She passed away Monday, October 13, 2008. GASS -- Jimmy Myers Gass December 8, 1946- October 11, 2008 Jimmy Myers Gass was taken from us on October 11, 2008, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, VA. A 1961 graduate of Bearden High School in Knoxville, TN, he joined the Navy in 1962. After an honorable discharge, he received his degree in Soil Science from University of Tennessee. After a tenure in the Forest Service, he opened his own Soil Consulting Business in Jonesborough, TN. Jimmy was a free spirit who loved music and the great outdoors. He cherished his family and taught his children how to find the good in everything. He is survived by his loving wife Diane; his sister Florence Hill and husband Sam of Atlanta, GA; daughter Angie Apodaca and husband Ben of Santa Fe, NM; daughter Marti Goff and husband Ron of Santa Fe, NM; daughter Michelle Ivester and husband Mike of Knoxville, TN; daughter Rebecca Gass Benz of CA; daughter Sara Barber and husband Tim of Lorton, VA; and his son John P. Gass of Jonesborough, TN. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and various nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Jimmy's Life will be held Saturday, October 18, 2008 at 4:00 at the Twin Creeks Picnic Pavillion in Gatlinburg, TN. GELFAND -- Harriet Gelfand, 79, a resident of Albuquerque for the past 35 years, passed away on Monday, October 14, 2008. Harriet was born August 22, 1929 the daughter of Jack and Mary Bostoff in Bronx, NY. She had been a volunteer at Presbyterian Hospital for 30 years. Harriet was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Gelfand in 2006. She is survived by one son, Jack Gelfand and wife Elizabeth of Albuquerque; and one grandson, Jakob Gelfand. Cremation has taken place, and she will be placed with her husband at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. JENSEN -- Mark Alan Jensen, 56, lost his four year battle with bone cancer on Monday, October 13, 2008. He was born January 29, 1952 in Albuquerque and moved to Edgewood in 1983. Mark is survived by his sweetheart, Gail Richards; son, Rory Jensen and wife, Kim Jensen; daughter, Clare Jensen and their mother Jane Jensen; sisters, Mimi Montgomery, Janice Gauman and husband, Denny, Elena Coffman and husband, Gaylan; and sister Leslie Jensen. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice K. and Alta Mae Jensen and grandparents, Joe and Mae Hill. Mark graduated from Highland High School in 1970 and UNM in 1974. He became a building contractor in 1974 and began a career in real estate in 1985 working primarily in Albuquerque's East Mountain area. Mark was Owner/Broker of Associated Mountain Realtors in Cedar Crest. He was a founder of the Edgewood Community Library and has been an ardent supporter since opening. In addition to homebuilding, Mark loved to dance, ski, scuba dive and play racquetball. He loved to travel the world and his many destinations are a tribute to a short life well lived. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held Saturday, 2:30 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel. Interment of cremated remains will take place at Mountain Valley Cemetery in Edgewood. LOPEZ -- Nelly E. Lopez, age 89, of Albuquerque, passed away Sunday October 12, 2008. She was born on January 10, 1919 in Merida, Mexico to Sergio and Dominga Arana. Nelly married Marcos Lopez on July 15, 1942 in Mexico. They moved to New York in 1950, and also lived in New Jersey before residing in Albuquerque for the past 30 years. Marcos preceded her in death in June of 1990 after 48 years of marriage. Nelly enjoyed gardening, loved to travel, and especially loved her desserts. She was fiercely dedicated and loyal to her family. She is survived by her daughters, Anna Walsh, Patricia Pistorio, Lucia Lutz all of Albuquerque, Josephine Forbes and her husband Dale of Mountainair, and Sr. Maria Lopez, PBVM of Kingston, NY; 14 grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren; and three great-great- grandchildren. MARTINEZ -- David Martinez, 43, a resident of Albuquerque since 1994, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, October 14, 2008. He is survived by his wife Esther Martinez; children Amy M. Martinez; grandchildren Serena Nevarez, Rico Hernandez and Amaya Hernandez all of Albuquerque; grandmother Julia Siguero of Robstown, TX; mother Nora Martinez of Plainview, TX; sister Connie Hipolito and husband, David of Denton, TX; brother Johnny Martinez of Rio Rancho, NM; mother-in-law Amelia Maestas of Hugoton, KS; father-in-law Marcelino Zambrano of Dalhart, TX; four brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law; nephew Isaac Zambrano and many other nieces and nephews; and a large, extended family. David was preceded in death by his father, Wallace Martinez; sister Natalie Martinez; niece Angelica Ramos and nephew Junior Gonzales. David loved the Lord! He was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan. MENEFEE-SCHEIER -- Lena B. Menefee-Scheier. Long-time Silver City resident Lena B. Scheier, 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep Sunday, October 12, 2008, at her home in Albuquerque. Her family was at her bedside and in her heart. She was preceded in death by her husbands: Clyde Alton Menefee of Artesia, and Ollie M. Scheier of Roy, NM. Born at Mills, NM in 1919, Lena was the youngest of eight children born to Giovanni and Nicoletta Bonomo who emigrated from Asiago, Italy. She was the last survivor among her six brothers and one sister. Lena became a Registered Nurse in 1945. In March 1946, Lena married Clyde Menefee. During 17 years of marriage, they had nine children as they moved around New Mexico with Clyde's job with the Soil Conservation Service. They finally settled at Silver City in 1952. In 1955, the Menefees arrived at 1919 Alabama Street, where the family remained for 47 years. In 1964, Clyde died in an automobile accident south of Silver City. Lena raised the nine Menefees with ample love and support from her family, many friends and neighbors. In April, 1972, Lena married Ollie Scheier, the general mill foreman at Phelps Dodge's Tyrone operation. Ollie died in 1992, and Lena continued to run the household on Alabama Street until she moved to Albuquerque in 2002. Throughout the years in Silver City, Lena, together with her dear friend Martha Hill, were fixtures at daily Mass at St. Vincent de Paul and then at the Newman Center, where both still have reserved seats waiting for them. Lena was an avid gardener, seamstress, and swimmer and enjoyed word puzzles. Her peanut brittle and chicken cacciatore are unrivaled. She loved watching basketball and her feet always tapped whenever music was playing. Most of all, Lena was a loving and loved mother, mother-in-law, grandma and great-grandma. Lena is survived by her nine children and three stepchildren and their spouses, 25 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren (with one more on the way). She will be missed by her family: Nicolynn and Bob Womack of Cortez, Colorado; John and Gailyn Menefee and son Matthew, of Savannah, Georgia; Janine Menefee of Albuquerque; Mary Menefee and Bruce Ellison, and son Jon, of Albuquerque; Judy Menefee and Doug Neher of Silver City; Judy's daughter, Holly and husband Scott Palm of Tucson; Judy's son Aaron Salars and wife Courtenay and their two daughters, Morgan and Sydney of Sonoma, California; Steve Menefee of Phoenix, and his three children, Joshua, Jennifer and Victoria, all of Tucson; Chris and Steve Scholl, their son Andy, and their daughter Stefanie and her husband Brett Thompson and their daughter Ellen, all of Albuquerque; Mike and Cathe Menefee of Phoenix, and their children Jean, Paula, Martha and Thomas; Cathy and Tim Keller of Albuquerque and their children Rachel, Peter, Steven and Benjamin. Lena is also survived by Ollie's three children: Charles, Kenny and Darlyne Draper, their spouses, 10 grandchildren and several great- grandchildren. NYHOLM -- June Nyholm, 84, died Monday, October 13, 2008. June was born in Minneapolis and moved to Los Alamos with her husband Lee in 1947 and then to Albuquerque in 1953. SANCHEZ -- Bennie Sanchez, 59, was born May 6, 1949. Our beautiful, sweet, precious sister went home to her Lord and Savior on October 14, 2008. She was preceded in death by her parents Reuben and Laura Sanchez. She is survived by her brothers and sisters: Reuben (Linda) Sanchez, Raul Sanchez, Dinah (Ricardo) Martinez, Lorraine Sanchez, Linda (Joseph) Griego, Diego "Harpo" Sanchez, Vivian (Mike) Stanton and Therese "Kutchy" Sanchez. She is also survived by her Aunt Sarah, Uncle Albert Chavez, and Uncle Luz Sanchez. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who were like her children and great-nieces and nephews who called her Grandma Bennie. She was such a kind and compassionate person and was so loved by all who knew her. She was a graduate of Rio Grande High School, Class of 1967. She was a loyal and faithful employee of Herrera Bus Company for 29 years. She loved her job at Herrera Bus Company and was so grateful to her employer and fellow bus drivers for their kind and generous support during her illness. Her family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to Herrera Bus Company and to her close friends for their unconditional love and support. SMITH -- Horace H. "Buzz" Smith, age 88, a resident of Albuquerque, NM and formerly of Belen, NM, passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2008. He retired from the US Air Force, in 1967 after 26 years of outstanding service. Buzz then went to work for US Fidelity and Guarantee Company. He was a member of the Tierra Del Sol Country Club for 25 years, Tierra Del Sol Mens' Golf Association, Retired Officers Association and the Belen Art League. Buzz was an avid golfer and enjoyed gardening, but fly-fishing was his passion. He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Michelsen; his wife, Rose Copeland; his mother, Bernice Smith; three brothers, Henry, Howard and Hillary Smith and daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Smith. Buzz is survived by his children, Janis Prudhomme, Anne Bahm, Dennis Smith and Terence Smith and their spouses, Raymond Prudhomme, Ronald Bahm and Susan Smith; seven grandchildren, David Bahm, Nicole Lucak, Natalie Moore, Angie Gonzales, Michael Prudhomme, Kristian Prudhomme, Gregory Smith; five great-grandchildren, Chelsey Moore, Monique Gonzales, Miranda Gonzales, Julian Gonzales and Gabriel Lucak. UHER -- David Uher, age 72, a resident of Los Lunas, NM since 2005 and formerly of Albuquerque, from 1958 until 2005, passed away on Monday, October 13, 2008 at Presbyterian Hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer. David was born in St. Louis, MO and served in the United States Navy after high school. He was employed and retired from the United States Postal Service in Albuquerque. David is survived by his wife of 48 years, Josie Uher; four sons, John, Jason, Jerome and Jacob Uher; daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Bryan Pfeiffer; two grandchildren, Jerrod and Hannah Pfeiffer; brother, Don Uher and wife, Evelyn; sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Tony Farrar, Brenda and Al Bartleson, Barbara and Leroy Lane all of MO; brothers-in-law, Leandro Abeyta and Eddie Abeyta and wife, Vera of Vaughn, NM. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. All Services will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, in Peralta, NM beginning with a Viewing on Friday, October 17, 2008 at 5:30 p.m., with a rosary to be recited at 6:00 p.m. A final visitation will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. with Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be held at a later date. WICKENS -- Robert S. Wickens, of Rancho Mirage, CA died October 10, 2008 at the age of 90. Born the eldest child of three children to Charles K. Wickens and Sylvia (Lonergan) Wickens on January 6, 1918 in Luddington, MI. Bob's dad was in the lumber business, and the family moved to Weed, CA and then Williams, AZ, before settling in Albuquerque, NM, when Bob was 12. Bob lived in Albuquerque the remainder of his adult life until 2006, when he and Mary Ann Franey Wickens, his wife of 60 years, moved to the Mirage Inn, an independent living resort in Rancho Mirage, CA, where they could be close to their daughter, Mary Lou Green and her husband Dennis. Bob was a highly decorated veteran of WWII. He enlisted in the U.S. Air force in 1942 and survived thirty B-24 air missions in the European Theater. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (with three oak leaf clusters) and the Air Medal, given for acts of heroism and meritorious service. After the war Bob found work with the Railway Post office, riding the mail trains delivering mail throughout the Southwest. Following a time in private enterprise, he returned to the U.S. Post Office where he worked until his retirement after 30 years of service. Bob was appreciated for his devotion to his church, acting as a Deacon at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in Albuquerque. He was a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. The Archbishop of Santa Fe commended Bob and Mary Ann for 20 years of volunteer service to the elderly at The Albuquerque Manor and taking communion to the ill at Anna Kaseman Hospital. Bob was well known among his many friends for his love of life and his passion for fishing. His smile was legendary both on and off the stream. Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann; daughter Mary Lou Green and son-in-law Dennis Green of La Quinta, CA; grandson Dennis Green, Jr., wife, Kathleen and great-granddaughter, Sheridan Rose Green of Seattle, WA; brother Dick Wickens and wife Dorothy and their eight children; and 17 grandchildren of Albuquerque, NM. Bob's younger sister, Corrine Wickens Shoemaker, passed away last year and is sorely missed; she is survived by her sons Ken Shoemaker and Jerry Shoemaker of Albuquerque. The Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary to be held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. N.E. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday October 16, 2008 at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, 811 Guaymas Place, N.E. Albuquerque, NM 87108. Friends may visit on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, prior to the Rosary from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Memorials in the name of Robert Wickens ("Mr. Countdown") may be made to Our Lady of Assumption Catholic School, where Bob volunteered for many years raising funds for the school.
