ASHER -- Donna Mae Asher, 86, a resident of Albuquerque since 1972, passed away Friday, September 5, 2008. She was born May 1, 1922 in Regal, MN. She is survived by her children, Diane and husband Gerald Carlson, Robert Asher, and Douglas and wife Cindy Asher; grandchildren, David, Steven, Selena, Jessica, Alex and Katy; great-grandchildren Christine Mae, Jaden and Jeremy; and her partner, Russ Kruppe. She was preceded in death by parents, Ernest and Louisa Harris; her husband, John; and siblings Pearl Fangmeir, Lois Isenberg, Dorothy Watson, Clifford Harris and Darrel Harris. Donna retired from Rosemount Engineering Co. in Minnesota and TVI in Albuquerque. She was a member of Sangre de Cristo Catholic Community. ATENCIO -- Juan P. Atencio Sr., 89, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on September 8, 2008. Mr. Atencio is survived by his sons, Paul Atencio and wife, Jan, Armando Atencio and wife, Veronica, Rudy Atencio, and Eloy Atencio and wife, Ernestine; sister, Rufina Martinez; brothers, Isaac Atencio and wife, Raquel, and Faustin Atencio and wife, Flora; grandchildren, Alyssa and husband, Jeff, Christopher and wife, Deborah, Autumn, Nicole, Ellena, Michelle, Gabriella, Sabrina, Kimberly, Matthew and Ashley; great-granddaughter, Mayserah; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. Atencio was preceded in death by his wife, Cordilia Atencio. Mr. Atencio is a member of the Catholic Church. Mr. Atencio was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Atencio was a Veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II with the 447th Anti-Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion. Mr. Atencio was a recipient of the EAME ribbon, 4 Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Ribbon, and the Purple Heart. BENJAMIN -- Marc L Benjamin, Jr, Lt. Col. Ret., 70, of Colorado Springs, CO passed away Saturday, September 6, 2008. He was born November 21, 1937 in Wichita, Kansas to Dorothy Fretzs-Benjamin and Marc L Benjamin, Sr. He was a graduate of Wichita High School East and the University of New Mexico – Albuquerque. He received his commission from the US Air Force December 14, 1959 and retired January 31, 1985. He was instrumental in the development of the Utah Veterans Memorial Park, a Division Of Parks and Recreation. He also served there as Cemetery Sexton before retiring following 10 years of service with the state. Survivors include his wife and high school sweetheart, Patricia Lynne Benjamin of Colorado Springs; daughters, Valery Benjamin, Alison Benjamin-Jennings, Diana Saunders, Vicki Clemons, and Brooke Benjamin-Baker; sons, Norman Booker and Kenneth Booker. He was known as Grandpa; to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His parents and his son, Sgt. Bryan Benjamin, preceded him in death. Military honors will be performed Thursday, September 11th at 9:00 a.m. at the Air Force Academy Community Center Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Association. His family would like to thank the Penrose Community Hospital in Colorado Springs, the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and all of our friends for their prayers and support.

BURSCH -- LaVerne I. Bursch went home to be with the Lord Friday, September 5, 2008 surrounded by her family, at their home in Rio Rancho. She came into this world August 12, 1925 in the small north Texas town of Telephone. LaVerne moved to Chama, NM with her family when she was a child. The family later moved to the Northwest and LaVerne finished high school in Newport, Washington. She met and married her first husband in Washington where her four children were born. In 1960 she moved back with her children to New Mexico, to be near her family. On April 6, 1961 LaVerne married Bill Bursch in Albuquerque. Bill brought two children to the marriage. LaVerne and Bill loved and enjoyed all of their six children equally. Together they owned and operated Bursch Trucking Co. until 1973. Soon after, they moved to their farm near Goodland Kansas and farmed there until they retired. Bill and LaVerne traveled and lived in various places, including Flagstaff, AZ and Lubbock, TX. LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents Earl and Myrtle Carver; sisters, Lillian Bryan and Lucille Cookson and her brothers, Nelson Carver and Clyde Carver. LaVerne is survived by her husband Bill Bursch of Rio Rancho, NM; one brother, Phillip Carver and wife Judy of Bagley, MN; her six children, Sandy Hardy and husband Paul of Rio Rancho, Terry Peterson and wife Sandy of Rio Rancho, Dean Bursch and wife Susan of Gunnison, CO, Beverly O'Brien and husband Tom of Rio Rancho, Debra VanWagoner and husband Stanton of Salt Lake City, UT, and Don Bursch and wife Lisa of Belen, NM; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; many other friends and relatives who loved her dearly. LaVerne will be greatly missed. GIBBONS -- Gerald Forrest Gibbons (74) beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, left this world September 8th surrounded by his family after a valiant battle with cancer. A memorial service celebrating his life will take place Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 2:00 PM, at French Mortuary Westside Chapel. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association or Vista Care Hospice Foundation. "Gibb" was born March 1, 1934 in Newell, Iowa to Doris and Lester Gibbons. At a young age he became interested in flying, obtaining his private pilots license before he graduated from Omaha Technical High School in 1952. He served in the Air Force from 1954-1957 as a radar operator and was stationed in Germany. By working odd jobs to finance his flying, and doing everything "the hard way," he was fortunate enough to turn his love of flight into a life-long career. He married Jacquolyn Longsine on July 19, 1958 in Omaha, Nebraska. He and Jackie raised two sons, Todd and Brett, in whom he instilled his love of flying. In 1964, after living for a short time in Albuquerque, he moved his family to Dallas when he was hired as a pilot for Trans Texas Airways. At age 38 he became a Captain on the Convair 600, later upgrading to the DC 9. Gibb and Jackie moved back to Albuquerque in 1981 and he finished his career with Continental Airlines (which was bought by Trans Texas Airways/Texas International). During his 30-year stint in the airlines, he accumulated over 30,000 hours of flight time. Gibb loved gardening, NASCAR, the Reno Air Races, and a cold beer. He considered everyone he ever met as a "friend." Gibb was preceded in death by parents Lester and Doris Gibbons, and sister Margel Sowell. HANEY -- Margaret Marie Haney, 80, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, went to be with our Lord on Saturday, September 6, 2008. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Ret. Col. Roy W. Haney, Jr.; brother, Norman Fintel and wife, Jo; sister, Gertrude Herold and husband, Sam; daughters, Dyan Clements, Shar Haley, Linda Adams and husband, Brian; son, Roy "Chip" Haney III; granddaughters Jessica Martinez and Kevin Hattery, Jennifer Haley-Brown and husband, Dimitri; grandsons, Jared and Bryce Adams; and great-grandchildren, Nora and William Martinez. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernst and Nora Fintel and her sister, Eileen Collman. Margaret was born in Deshler, Nebraska; she married Roy at the age of 18 and supported him throughout his Army career, a journey which brought her to live in many places, including Virginia, Georgia, Germany, Kansas, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Florida, and finally Albuquerque, NM. After retirement, Roy and Margaret traveled frequently in their motorhome to visit friends and family across the United States. Margaret was an upstanding member of her community, an active volunteer at her church, a welcoming host, a skilled cross-stitcher, an excellent cook, a hummingbird enthusiast, and a constant pillar of love and support for her family. HUSTED -- Ryan Orlando Husted, son of Anthony and Doris Husted, born August 29, 1979 died in his sleep September 6, 2008. Faithful and devoted friend, loving brother and beautiful son, Ryan touched so many lives in his oh, so short life. He enjoyed fishing and camping with his many friends. They planned vacations for months and savored the fun for months afterwards. After years of struggling to find his way in life, he met the wonderful people at ITT Technical Institute, from where he graduated on September 5th. Many prayers were answered when Ryan accepted Jesus' offer of salvation. Ryan was so very happy and was excited about his life. Bernadette worked at Adelante Development Center for many years. MILLER -- Kathleen Quigley Miller was 105 years old when she passed away September 6, 2008. She was born in Liverpool, Nova Scotia on June 10, 1903, spent her adolescence in Portland, OR, and moved to Los Angeles in 1920 where she and her older brother worked in the movie industry. Her true vocation was sewing. After serving with the National Youth Administration and Army Air Forces as a parachute inspector and power sewing instructor during the Second World War, she developed a line of children's clothing which she ran from her shop in Beverly Hills. Nearing retirement age, she began a new career as a sewing instructor. She was a lifelong active participant in the Episcopal Church and attended the centennial celebration of St. Mary's Church in Los Angeles last October. Since moving to Albuquerque in 1980, she was an active member of St. John's Cathedral and volunteered once a week at the St. John's Thrift Shop. As her eyesight failed, she also turned to knitting and was thrilled to participate in the Linus Project. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Sandy and Charlie Steen; her granddaughter Anne Steen; her granddaughter and husband Margaret and Thomas Guldborg; great-granddaughters Natalie and Danielle Guldborg, and grandniece Mary McGowan. MIRABAL -- Joe E. Mirabal, 83, a native of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully Monday, September 1, 2008. He is survived by his children, John and Stan Mirabal and wife, Mary; step-children, LeRoy Barncastle, of Santa Barbara, CA, Irene Cox, and husband, Miller Dean, Lorraine Verhest and husband, Joe; daughter-in-law, Pam Barncastle; sister, Emma Alderette; grandchildren, Darren, Desiree, Denise, John, Frank, Michelle, Alicia, Lynn, John, Marlene, Christopher, Tami, David, Darren, Dean, Deanne, Desiree; 24 great-grandchildren; and several other extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Adeline "Lena" Mirabal; stepson, Rudolph Barncastle; sister, Erlinda Aragon; and brother, Odelio Mirabal. Joe dedicated 31 years of service to the gas company of New Mexico and retired August 1986. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. Joe was a Navy veteran of World War II from March '43 to April '46. He loved sports and cars, and he played semi-pro baseball. A Rosary will be recited Wednesday, September 10, 2008, 7:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel. PHILLIPS -- Jessie Glass Phillips passed away at home on the morning of September 5, 2008 (her mother's birthday) after a long illness. She was born July 28, 1925 in Rockford, IL. Her mother, Catherine Mary Chemello Glass; and father, Edward Merrill Glass; and brothers, Billy and Peter Michael; all preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister, Lila Chidichimo of Twin Falls, ID; and brother, Pat Glass of Belvidere, IL; her children, son Laurie, his wife Jane and their daughters Megan Hoffman and Erin Phillips, all of Albuquerque; son Nick, his wife Michelle and their son Derek of Chandler, AZ; daughter Mary K. and husband Scott Farmer of Albuquerque and daughter Jacque Phillips-Paro of Phoenix, AZ. Jessie grew up in Belvidere, IL with her mom, dad, sister, and brothers at 202 West Perry. She attended Perry School, and graduated from Belvidere High School in 1943. During the war, she worked at several different jobs in and around Belvidere and took flying lessons in her spare time. After the war, she and her sister attended the University of New Mexico, where she majored in languages and met her husband-to-be Wallace Phillips. After they married, Jessie worked at Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque until Wallace graduated, when they moved to Omaha, NE where he attended dental school and Laurie was born. When Wallace got his dental degree in 1952 the family moved to Gallup, NM where Nick and Mary K. were born. Jessie was a homemaker and mom in Gallup for nearly 25 years. She was divorced in 1974, and moved to Albuquerque where she re-enrolled at UNM, studied economics, and graduated in 1984 with a Phi Beta Kappa key. She then worked for UNM's Bureau of Business and Economic Research until retiring in 1992. She continued to live in Albuquerque and enjoyed her retirement reading books, scuba diving, and international travel including taking the Trans-Siberian Railway across Russia. She loved birds and bird songs and enjoyed watching and feeding the birds in her flower garden. She never liked tomatoes -"No tomatoes anywhere on the plate!"-and to this day her kids and grandkids regard tomatoes with suspicion. Mom loved words, wordplay, reading, and the English language. Puns ("the thong is ended, but the malady lingers on!"), spoonerisms ("I'm going to shake a tower"), crossword puzzles, and murder mysteries were her constant entertainment. She loved to clip unintentional humor from the newspaper to share with family and friends. Special thanks are extended to Karen Herring and other staff of VistaCare hospice for their wonderful care and sense of humor. Services will be Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at 1 p.m. at the Sunset Memorial Urn Garden at 924 Menaul NE in Albuquerque.

QUINTANA -- Gloria (Crollett Vouterin) Quintana, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend completed her journey on earth and went to be with our Lord on Saturday, September 6, 2008. Gloria was born February 28, 1927 in a house built by her grandparents, Serferino and Christina Perea Crollett, on the corner of 4th and Cromwell Street SW. Her grandparents moved to the Barelas area from Old Town in the early 1900's. Serferino and his sons founded the Crollett Mortuary on 2nd Street NW. Gloria is the daughter of Theresa Vouterin Hernandez and Phillip Vouterin, Sr. who migrated from Manari, Tripoli, Greece. She attended Sacred Heart School, St. Vincent's Academy and graduated from Spanish American Normal School (El Rito) in 1945. She later graduated from Western School for Secretaries. She had various secretarial jobs before she was an employee with the Air Force Weapons Lab at KAFB. She retired January of 1988 from Field Command DNA after 26 years of service. She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Christine Vouterin; aunts, Jennie Cordova and Carrie Crollett; special aunt, Josephine "Lala" Crollett; uncles, Fred, Henry and Louie Crollett and their spouses; stepfather, Eleazar C. Hernandez, all of Albuquerque. She leaves to cherish her memory forever her husband, Elias "Neffie" Quintana, Sr., her high school sweetheart whom she married August 31, 1947; her twin sons, Johnny and Joey Quintana of Albuquerque; sons, Elias Quintana, Jr. of Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, Kenny, Michael and David Quintana all of Albuquerque; daughters, Phyllis Bopp and husband, Brian, of Midlothian, Texas, Patricia McDonald and husband, Rudy, of Albuquerque; sister, Josephine Hernandez-Fevig and husband, Ralph, of Albuquerque; brother, Phillip Vouterin, Jr. of Albuquerque; nieces, Sharon Whitaker-Martinez of Roswell, Stephanie Fevig of Denver, CO, Natalie Fevig of Brooklyn, NY; nephew, David Fevig of Albuquerque; numerous relations in Espanola, NM and California; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. RICHINS -- Cassandra Auguste Richins, 22, of Albuquerque, NM passed away on September 5, 2008, in Wisconsin. She was known to her family as "Cassy" and the friends as "Drea". She is survived by her parents, Tim and Sandra O'Rear of Albuquerque and Richard and Pamela Richins of Morenci, AZ; siblings, Holly and Cody Richins of Albuquerque, Shasta and husband, Kyle Doubek of Albuquerque, Jared O'Rear of Las Cruces and Pammy Richins of Morenci; grandparents, Jack and LuDene Nelson of Cuba, NM, and Mel and Jan Richins of Animas, NM; and her niece, Mackenzie of Albuquerque. She is preceded in death by her grandmother, Beth Richins of Animas, NM. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She left behind a list of friends too numerous to name. Cassy was born January 18, 1986, in Orem, Utah. She attended school in Animas, NM, Las Cruces, NM and started the 7th grade at McKinnley Middle School in Albuquerque. She graduated in 2004 from Del Norte High School. While attending Del Norte she was a cheerleader, a member of the cross-country team, Baseball manager, Key Club, and was a member of the Knights of the Round Table. She attended NMSU, where she became a member of the Delta Gamma sorority. She had worked the last few years as a waitress and took classes when she could in Albuquerque. She wanted to be a nurse. She had recently moved to Wisconsin. Cassy had a smile that would light up a room as soon as she walked in. She had a kind, forgiving heart and was always willing to give everyone a second chance. She had a special place in her heart for the veteran biker community, especially the members of "F-Troop". She called many of them her family. It was said shortly after her passing that everyone liked her, as she grew up and met new people she never forgot the ones she had already known. ROOSE -- Walter R. Roose Jr., of Albuquerque, NM, passed away serenely at home on September 3, 2008. He is survived by Virginia, his wife of 60 years; by his sister, Shirley Hammerle, by his five children; eight grandchildren; and by five nieces and nephews. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in May 1942 and was wounded in action in March 1945. Despite the severe nature of his injury and long hospitalization, he later majored in U.S. History at Rollins College and was awarded a Carnegie Fellowship in teaching at Peabody and Vanderbilt Universities. He went on to enjoy a distinguished career as Reference Librarian, and was retired from Sandia in 1989. We rejoice in the knowledge of his continuing life. He was a great artist, special son, grandson, and wonderful father who will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. SLOANE -- Ralph G. Sloane 1918-2008 Ralph was born May 1918 in Crowley, Louisiana. He lived on a rice farm until the age of 12 when he moved to the small town of Welsh, LA. He graduated from Welsh High School in 1937 where he received outstanding athlete awards for participation in basketball, track and baseball. He attended a local college for two years prior to serving in the U.S. Army for four years during WWII. He spent most of his time in the "original" Persian Gulf Command in charge of a truck convoy delivering supplies to Russia as the Germans were about take Stalingrad. He would share many stories about these trips including times when the convoy would be stopped just short of the Russian border so the Russians could put "Made in Russia" on the outside of all of the containers. He lost many buddies during the war but was very proud of his service. He remembered with pride when General Eisenhower was in a parade and saluted him while wearing his uniform in New York City. After the war he returned to school at Louisiana State University on the GI Bill. He met the love of his life, Elaine Triche, on his first day of class. He obtained his BS from LSU in 1947 and his Masters in Education in 1949. He was a faithful fan of the LSU Tigers for the rest of his life. He married Elaine in 1949 and relocated to Albuquerque, NM after a one year in Kingman, AZ. They raised three children; Ralph Jr. (Ron), Andrew and D'Elaine (DD). Ralph and Elaine both worked as junior high school teachers. Ralph taught for 31 years. He kept his Louisiana connections current with many cross country trips to visit friends and relatives. He was an avid reader (especially westerns), a fine writer and an excellent story teller. People enjoyed his hand written letters. He compiled a family history book and left a detailed autobiography. In the 60's Ralph and Elaine purchased a lot in the Brazos Box (near Chama) and built a mountain cabin with extra money he earned teaching speed reading classes at Kirtland Air Force Base and selling suits at Strongbergs at night. They enjoyed the cabin with many friends and family over the last 40 years introducing several people to the high mountain country and to the thrill of trout fishing. The family still enjoys the cabin. One of his granddaughters recently became engaged along the Brazos River. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Albuquerque, NM. In 2006, Ralph relocated to San Luis Obispo, CA to live with his daughter. He passed September 5, 2008 at the age of ninety. His wife, Elaine, preceded him in death in 2001. He is survived by his three children, Ralph Jr. and Terry Sloane and their children, Marie, Jean and Frank (Farmington, NM), Andrew and Beth Sloane and their children, Jennifer (LSU Grad), Rebecca (LSU sophomore) and Emily (LSU potential) Mechanicsville, VA, and daughter, D'Elaine (DD) and Mike Patrick and their children, Allison, Michelle and Elise, San Luis Obispo, CA. A Memorial Service will be held in Albuquerque at Saint John's Methodist Church, 2626 Arizona NE, at 10:00 a.m. on Friday September 11th and a viewing will be held Thursday September 10th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at French Mortuary on Lomas and Eubank. He will be buried next to his wife in the Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM.
