BACA -- Charles Ewing Baca, Sr., fondly referred to as "Caballo", found peace on the first day of September after an abundant and momentous 90-year existence. He was a good, gentle man with strength and kindness. He was well loved by family and friends and will be greatly missed. As a lifelong resident of New Mexico, he was a respected citizen born in the barrio of Barelas, before Albuquerque considered curbs or pavement. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School, where he met his life-long enamorada. He excelled in athletics, lettering in basketball and football, and graduated from Albuquerque High School in the class of 1939. As a participant in the recovery from the Great Depression, he was in the Civilian Conservation Core during the Great Depression, laying stonework in our national parks. Then, as duty called upon the Greatest Generation, he went "over there", and personally helped liberate Nazi concentration camps. As a WWII veteran, he then returned to lovingly raise four "boomers", who awarded him the wealth of seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He worked to retirement for the A.T. & S.F. Railway and yet maintained an eclectic array of secondary jobs and volunteer work. As an usher for Sacred Heart Church, he would serve in this capacity during Mass or call Bingo games in the evenings. On weekends, he would bartend at American Legion Post 72. As caretaker for Heights Community Center's Stadium, he'd collect admission, maintain the field, score keep, and umpire. He refereed city intramural basketball, and was well regarded at any of the city's golf courses. One cannot grieve or miss him any greater than his loving and devoted wife of 66 years, Vera Lois Black Baca. Viewing will be held at Daniels Family Funeral Services, Garcia Mortuary on 8th and Stover on Friday, September 5, 2008 from 6:30 to 7 p.m., followed by a Rosary. Service will be held at St. Bernadette Catholic Church on Saturday, September 6th at 9 a.m., followed by interment at Mount Calvary Cemetery. WILLIAMS -- Sherri Williams passed away on September 1, 2008 at home in Albuquerque after a valiant battle with cancer. She was born to Mary Margaret and John Charles Blissard on March 30, 1943, in Washington D.C. Sherri graduated in 1959 from Highland High School in Albuquerque, and from New Mexico State University in 1963 with a BA in Psychology. Sherri met Bill Williams at a school mixer dance in 1960, they were married on February 16, 1963, and have been soul mates for over 45 years. A son, Bryan, was born on May 22, 1969, and currently lives in Klamath Falls, OR. With Bill working for an oil company, several moves were made, so Sherri became pretty adept at being flexible both with family life and her work. Sherri settled on a career in Real Estate as a salesman and later as a Loan Officer and Mortgage Underwriter. Most of Bill's working career was spent in California. During two job assignments in Bakersfield, Sherri took up motorcycle riding, camping in the nearby mountains, and bought a Corvette. While living in Ventura, Sherri and Bill went sailing with a neighbor and both fell in love with the ocean. Three sailboats later, Sherri and Bill retired early and left Ventura harbor in February 1996 on a 44-foot sailboat on their great adventure. Sherri loved the ocean and meeting people from various countries they visited. This love affair lasted 12 years as they explored Mexico, the many countries in the South Pacific, the Indian Ocean, the South Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal and back up the Pacific Ocean, completing their circumnavigation at Mazatlan, Mexico. About two years ago they bought a motor home and started land cruising -- no more tent camping! Sherri was quiet and considerate and loved helping people. She laughed easily and often. We will miss her bright smile and cheerful personality. Sherri is survived by her husband, Bill; son, Bryan; sisters: Jan Blackman and husband Jac; Charlene Baker and husband Bob; and numerous nieces and nephews. Reflections Funerals & Life Celebrations is handling the cremation arrangements. A Memorial will be held at 12 p.m., on Sunday, September 14, 2008 at the High Desert Center For Spiritual Living, 5621 Paradise Blvd NW, Albuquerque, NM 87114.
