BACA -- Fidelina (Phyllis) Baca, 91, a resident of Albuquerque went to be with her Savior on Wednesday, July 30, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan; daughter, Barbara; her parents, Miguel and Cleofas Griego; and brother, Christino Griego. Phyllis was born on August 11, 1917 in Corrales, NM; attended Harwood Girls School in Albuquerque; and graduated from Albuquerque Business College. Phyllis married Dan Baca, February 1, 1940. She was her husband's operating partner in establishing Baca's Best Mexican Foods in Albuquerque, 1946. Phyllis is survived by her son, Dan Baca and wife, Kathy of Albuquerque, daughter, Patricia Sterck of Pinedale, WY, son, Anthony Baca and wife, Beth of Piedmont, SC; granddaughter, Marlie Thomas and husband, Rob of Albuquerque, grandson, Damian Baca of Tucson, AZ, granddaughter, Tara Baca of Piedmont, SC, granddaughter, Nicole Baca of Aztec, NM, granddaughter, Ember Baca of Piedmont, SC, grandsons, Roger Gnagey and Cory Gnagey of Piedmont, SC; grandson, Aaron Sterck and granddaughter, Elise Sterck, both of Pinedale, WY; great-grandchildren, Jaydon, Josiah, and Melea Thomas; sister, Erinea (Nieta) Gutierrez and husband, Loyola of Alameda, NM, brother, Robert Griego and wife, Ester of Downey, CA, sister, Dolores Buchnan and husband, Jack of Seattle, WA, sister, Marian Rell of Riverside, CA, sister, Sally Putman of Tipton, MO, brother, Mike Griego Jr. and wife, Crissie of Las Vegas, NV, and sister, Vijies Saiz and husband, Julian of Rio Rancho; sisters-in-law, Rafelita Griego of Rio Rancho, Margaret Garcia, Sarah Chavez and Edna Baca, all of Albuquerque; and many more nephews, nieces, cousins, and precious friends. Phyllis will be remembered for her love of traveling the world, her work with the Elks Club and the Knights of Columbus, her special birthday club, her love of dancing, and her Wednesday morning prayer meetings. We rejoice with her in finally making it home. DAVIS -- Rita Marie (Pitts) R.N. Rita Davis, 72, passed away on July 5, 2008 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL. She fractured a hip in a fall, had successful surgery, but contracted pneumonia, and died six days after her accident. Rita was born in Evergreen Park, IL to Earl W. and Loretta G. (Walter) Pitts. She attended Catholic schools on Chicago's South Side and graduated in 1957 from Little Company of Mary School of Nursing. She married Jon L Davis that same year in Reynosa, Mexico and they embarked on a 29-year career of travels, living in eight states and Belgium and Germany where she was the lead volunteer at the Bitburg AB Hospital. Her husband survives her at the family home in Albuquerque, their 23rd address. Rita is also survived by a son, Michael; and his children, Drew, Madison, and Michael; daughter, Catherine Davis-Query (Bryan) and their son, Davis all of Albuquerque; daughter, Laurie of Orlando, FL; Laurie's son Spec4 Michael Foster (Ehelen) of Fort Lee VA (currently deployed to Iraq) their daughter, Bella, and Ehelen's sons, D'Metrious and Malachi. She is also survived by her brother, Robert Pitts (Dolores) of Rolling Meadows, IL; a sister-in-law, Gwendolyn (Davis) Stilwell (Johnson) of Pittsfield, IL; and 14 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Muriel Bretz. Cremation has taken place. A Davis family luncheon was held in Pittsfield at the Stilwell home on July 6, 2008, a family and friends memorial was held at the Albuquerque Hilton on July 11, and a Memorial Mass will be held at St. Colette Parish in Rolling Meadows, IL on August 23. Another Mass will be held in her memory that same day at St. Mary's Parish in Pittsfield, IL. Rita was a doting grandmother and will be missed by her wonderful tribe of grandchildren. She was also an animal lover and donations to the Animal Humane Society of New Mexico at 615 Virginia, 87108 would have been her choice of memorial.

EDEN -- Travis Dean Eden, age 52, of Albuquerque, suddenly passed away following challenges of a long-term illness on Wednesday, July 30, 2008. Travis graduated Sandia High School in 1974. He was actively involved locally and nationally with the Order of DeMolay. He attended UNM, earning his BBA in Finance and an MBA from the University of Phoenix. He began his banking career at Albuquerque National Bank, and then moved to the First National Bank as VP of Commercial Loans. In 1989, Travis joined the Prudential Insurance Co. of America where he earned recognition in the "Million-Dollar Round-Table" and the company's highest award, "The President's Conference". He became Vice President and Manager of Rocky Mountain Awning Co., later returning to Prudential, then bitten by the entrepreneurial bug and opened a family business, Tropical Smoothie Cafe. He was known for his active community service throughout Albuquerque, NM, and the United States through Leadership Albuquerque, Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, New Mexico State Fair Commissioner, All Faiths Receiving Home Endowment Foundation, DEI, just to name a few. Travis was known for his compassion and care for others, he always put others needs in front of his own. His passions in life were his family and friends. He will long be remembered for his great sense of humor and sharing fun times with those he loved. His life motto was "To touch a life." Travis is survived by Susan, his wife of 28 years; sons, Ryan and wife Katie, Kyle, and Cory; father, Gorden Eden, Sr.; brother, Gorden Eden, Jr. and wife Mary; numerous nieces and nephews. GALLEGOS -- Petrita Gallegos, age 96, beloved mother and grandmother, was called home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, July 29, 2008. She was born in Madrid, NM, and was a resident of Albuquerque, formerly of Pena Blanca, NM. She was preceded in death by a son, Emiliano Sanchez. Mrs. Gallegos is survived by her loving children, Helen Lucero and husband Rudy, Josie Torres and husband Alfred, Dolores Garcia and husband Mike, Virginia Gallegos-Martinez, and Joe Gallegos and wife Vicki; daughter-in-law, Sarah Sanchez; 22 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous relatives and friends. GILES -- Paul Murray Giles, 89, died at his home in Albuquerque on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 after a year-long illness. Paul was born Thursday, January 2, 1919, in Grove City, PA, to Anna Murray and John Wesley Giles, the youngest of three children. In 1940, Paul graduated with an engineering degree from Grove City College, where he excelled academically and on the tennis team. His engineering career with General Electric at Schenectady, NY, was interrupted by service as a naval officer during World War II. Before shipping out to the Pacific, Paul married his childhood sweetheart, Ruth Hulbert. After the war, Paul resumed his career with GE, then with Hughes Aircraft in Tucson, and finally at Los Alamos National Labs, where he worked from 1957 to 1982. Paul enjoyed working crossword puzzles, played competitive tennis into his late 70's, was an avid bridge player and bicycle rider, an amateur radio operator since age 14, a singer with the Highland Harmonizers, and a member of the Friendly Wesleyan Sunday school class at Central Methodist Church. His sense of humor was intact to the end. Paul was the quintessential Christian gentleman. He was preceded by his wife, Ruth; and daughter, Toni; his parents; his brother, Jack; his sister, Frances Morrow. Paul is survived by his son, Murray, and wife, Patty, of Albuquerque; and grandson, Paul Giles III, of Morenci, AZ. GUMP -- Robert Paul (Andy) Gump passed away at his home June 19, 2008, in Silver City, NM. He was born April 22, 1914, in Marion, IN to Myrtle Levengood and Ralph Gump. He married Rhode Jane Sheffield, also of Marion, on June 4, 1944. They moved to New Mexico in the late 1940's and resided in Albuquerque, Bosque Farms, Hillsboro, and Truth or Consequences, before moving to Silver City. Mr. Gump spent many years working as a weatherstripper and caulker in the Albuquerque area. He enjoyed travel, motorcycles, fishing, and boating. He took up air rifle target shooting in his late seventies. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rhoda; sister, Alma Dickson and husband George of Marion, IN; son, Edward and his wife Sara of Hudson NY; daughter, Gigi Shoaf and her husband Doug of Silver City; one granddaughter Valerie Trujillo of Oahu; one grandson, Robert Shoaf of Silver City, and four great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Baca's Funeral Chapel.

HAYES -- Carol Ann Hayes, 49, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 28, 2008. Carol was born on August 5, 1958. She worked on an accelerated curriculum and graduated one year early in 1975 from Sandia High School. Carol was a kind soul and well liked by everyone who knew her. She loved animals and had a special place in her heart for her two cats, Flamer and Spike. Carol was a beloved aunt, sister, and daughter. She is survived by her parents, Everett and Amelia Hayes; brothers, Robert Hayes and Jack Hayes; sister, Christine Duncan; and two nieces, Sarah and Jamie Duncan, all of Albuquerque. JACOBI -- Florence M. Jacobi, 92, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 31, 2008. She is survived by four children, David Muth and wife, Marsha of Phoenix, AZ, Kathleen Ross and husband, Lonnie of Albuquerque, Mary Chapel of Bosque Farms, Danny Muth and wife, Martha of Denver, CO; stepson, Chuck Jacobi and wife, Sherri of Las Vegas, NV; 14 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Jacobi; and granddaughter, Kimberly Chapel. Florence was born and raised in Springfield, OH and moved to Albuquerque in 1957. She was employed with American Car and Foundry (ACF) from 1959 to 1967 and then employed by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) from 1967 to 1969. Florence was a member of Calvary Chapel and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Florence had a wonderful sense of humor. She was a wonderful cook, loved to fish at Vallecito Lake with her husband Charlie, play cards and games at family gatherings, and loved to listen to music. She was born on March 26, 1925, in Trauger, PA to Anthony and Juliana (Grabowski) Zukowski, and moved to Albuquerque, NM in 1949. Pearl was a member of Queen of Heaven Parish. Junick and wife Melba, and Dr. Daniel W. ROSENZWEIG -- Connie Rosenzweig (nee Sugar) died July 29, 2008 after a dignified battle with cancer. Connie was born September 19, 1936 in Chicago, IL where she lived for the majority of her life. She married her childhood sweetheart, Mickey, whom she adored and sadly leaves behind. She leaves behind her daughter, Lisa (Rosenzweig) Alpert and son-in-law Lance; son, Scott Rosenzweig and daughter-in-law Liz; and her son, Todd Rosenzweig (deceased) and daughter-in-law Debby. Also mourning her loss are her sister, Joan Plotkin, and her children. She will be deeply missed by her beloved grandchildren Nicole, Benjamin, David and Daniel, and of course her grand-dogs Jackpot, Buddy, and Cosmo. They all brought sunshine into her life. She leaves behind friends all over the country; especially her dear friends in Albuquerque, NM, Chicago, IL, and West Hartford, CT. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. Her warmth and smile befriended all who met her. She was truly a Woman of Valor. SLOTA -- Michael Charles, in Santa Fe, July 31, 2008. He was born on February 5, 1947, in Elizabeth, NJ, to Raymond and Florence Slota. He is survived by wife of 40 years, Elizabeth (Liz); sons Stephan and wife Katy, Benjamin and wife Lisa, and daughter Rebecca Cesario and husband Mario; as well as his six grandchildren, Ryan, Evan, and Nathan Slota and Michael, Gabriela, and Robert Cesario. His brothers, Raymond, John, and Mark, their wives and children, also survive him. Mike graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in June of 1968, and came to New Mexico to serve in the Air Force at Kirtland Weapons Lab. After completing his military service, he earned a master degree at UNM in Nuclear Engineering and an MBA. He joined Public Service Company of NM in 1973, where he worked in several capacities, including Santa Fe Electric department and the Sangre de Cristo Water Company. He retired from PNM in 1995 after negotiating the sale of the water company to the City of Santa Fe. After retiring, Mike formed a consulting firm and worked in Louisiana, Nepal, Moldova and for the State Department in Iraq as a water consultant. During his time in Santa Fe, Mike also obtained a Master's in Liberal Education at St. John's College. SMITH -- Billy Franklin Smith, 31, left us July 23, 2008. He is survived by his daughter, Bailey, 3, whom he loved deeply. He leaves his mother, Cathy and step-father, David Grife y Vigil; father, Gary Lee and step-mother, Tina Smith; grandparents, Bill and Yvonne Smith, Myrtle Sparks, Betty Thurber; brothers, B. Jay Smith, David Grife, Mark Grife and families; ex-wife, Amber Smith; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends who are left to mourn his passing. He graduated from Eldorado High School, 1995, was a professional electrician, and owned B.A.B. Electric. WESTERMAN -- Gayle Westerman passed away on July 28, 2008 while visiting family in Albuquerque. She was 50 years old, and is survived by her husband, Bruce Westerman; son, Joshua Klein, his wife Meiling; and granddaughter, Dylan Gayle; daughter, Audrey and her husband Jason Paul; daughter, Kassandra Westerman; son, Trevor Westerman; sister and brother-in-law Arlene and Glen Stahl; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents, Fred and Anne Hulse; brothers, Charles and Paul Hulse; and sisters, Betty King and Katherine Hulse. Her home was in Royse City, TX where she lived in her dream-home that she designed. She worked as a child-care provider, and most recently as a home-health assistant. Gayle touched the lives of everyone she met and was loved by all in return. Known for her sense of humor and sincerity, she could always bring a smile to your face and always be there in a time of need. She loved building memories and preserving them through photos, scrapbooks, and her websites. Cremation has taken place and a private memorial service has been held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Animal Humane Association. Gayle had a passion to question the meaning of life and was well aware of its inevitable end.
