AYZE -- Henry A. Ayze, born January 15, 1948 passed away on July 9, 2008. Henry served our country as a LCPL in the USMC for seven years and was honorably discharged after receiving a National Defense Services Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three stars, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal, RVMUC Gallantry Cross, Expert Badge M-14 rifle and Purple Heart. He is survived by a son, Joseph; daughters, Nanette and Suzette; brothers, Joe and Marty Ayze; and his four sisters, Ida Orchard, Yvonne Lyon, Inez Candelaria, and Geraldine Moran. Interment at National Cemetery, Santa Fe; pending.

BRADY -- Freda Mitchell Brady, known to many friends and relatives as "Annie" was born on May 2, 1904. She grew up in Dawson, NM, where her family worked on a ranch owned by Phelps Dodge Corporation. She taught school in Dawson and Raton, and in 1933 she married James F. Brady in Taos. For many years she was a homemaker in Walsenburg, CO. In the mid-1950s, she and Jim moved to Santa Fe, where Freda worked three years for the Santa Fe City Library before moving to Cibola, NM, to manage Bob's General Store. Retiring from the store, they moved to Espanola, where Freda worked for the Rio Arriba County Library. Some of her duties as librarian included taking the bookmobile to rural communities. She said it made her happy when the children came to take out books. She retired from the library in 1972 and remained in Espanola, a town that she loved very much. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and contributed to the Espanola Hospital Auxiliarys Holly Berry Fair. She is survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, including Mitchell Quandt and Patricia Victour, to whom she was a second mother, and Suzanne Crews and Jami Garrett, beloved friends of Annie, Patricia and Mitchell. A Memorial Gathering will take place on Friday July 11, 2008 at 10:30 in the chapel of Block-Salazar Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation in Freda's name to the Red Cross or the Espanola Hospital Auxiliary, which she volunteered for in past years. The family of Freda Brady has placed her care to The Rivera Family of Block-Salazar Mortuary.

CAFFERTY -- Lucille "Lucy" (Larrabee) Cafferty, 81, a resident of Corrales, passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2008, with her loving family by her side. Lucy was born January 7, 1927, the daughter of Bill and Anna Hafertepe in St. Louis, MO. She retired as a Budget Analyst from Sandia Labs in 1983. Lucy loved gardening and plants and the house was usually a jungle of plants. Her wonderful homegrown tomatoes, bell peppers, and squash were enjoyed by family, friends, and neighbors. The beautiful flowers were enjoyed by birds, bees, and humans, too. She loved to do elegant tailgate parties for opening night at the Santa Fe Opera. Lucy loved square dancing, round dancing, and ballroom dancing. She loved all creatures great and small. When she saw a creature in trouble, she sprang into action to rescue it. She was preceded in death by her former husband Joe Larrabee; daughters, Betty Ruper and Theresa "Terry" Greenstreet; grandson, Robert Ruper; and her beloved dog, Molly. Lucy is survived by her husband Leo; sons, John Larrabee and wife Barbara, Dr. Lee and wife Dr. Susan Cafferty; daughters, Maureen, Colleen and Jeanie Cafferty; grandchildren, James Ruper and wife Janet, Daryl Greenstreet and wife Lisa, Shelly Ramirez and husband Andy, Jeannette Maxwell, Tanner Larrabee, Danielle Sedillo-Cafferty, and Shawn Cafferty-Lueck; and six great-grandchildren. For those who wish, donations in Lucy's name may be made to the animal rescue organization of your choice. CASTELLI -- Ralph Castelli, 73, a resident of Albuquerque since 1994, died Friday, June 20, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Jane Castelli; sister, Livia Simeone; brothers, Armand Castelli and wife, Rita and Henry Castelli and wife, Mary, all of Pittsburgh, PA; 14 nieces and nephews, and many cousins. Mr. Castelli had a love for opera, attending the Pittsburgh Opera, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, among many others. He was a past President of the Albuquerque Guild of the Santa Fe Opera. CUELLAR -- Gavina M. Cuellar, 73, born on September 19, 1934 was called to her heavenly home, ending her journey here on earth on July 7, 2008. Gavina loved life deeply and enjoyed the very simple things in life. We will miss her smile, and feistiness. "Our life is already empty without you, and we will forever love you"! She was proceeded in death by her father, Flavio Archuleta; and her mother, Trinidad Sanchez. Survived by her husband of 56 years, Joe Cuellar; daughters, Carla Montano, Wanda Sanchez, and Deborah Casados. CUEVAS-KELLOGG -- Rosie "Roro" Cuevas-Kellogg, age 37, of Rio Rancho, entered into peace, Monday, July 7, 2008. Rosie was a great inspiration to so many. She was a champion for abused children and families. "Roro" was a loving and caring aunt who always put other's needs in front of her own. She will be greatly missed by all who were touched by her life. DOWLING -- James A. Dowling, age 69, a resident of Albuquerque, died on July 7, 2008. Jim was born and raised in Washington, D.C., where he graduated from Gonzaga High School and attended The Catholic University of America, where he earned both a B.A. and a PhD in Physics, with a dissertation in Spectroscopy. His career as an optical scientist spanned over 40 years during which he specialized in the development of a wide variety of optical instruments and laser propagation experiments. He led and participated in numerous field experiments related to measurements of long-path atmospheric transmission and atmospheric turbulence effects on High Energy Lasers. These measurements were made in such diverse places as Cape Canaveral, White Sands Missile Range, Coastal California, and Hawaii. Jim published over 100 journal articles, papers and technical reports, and was an invited speaker at conferences both in the U.S. and abroad. He was a member of the Optical Society of America and SPIE, the Optical Engineering Society. His career in optics encompassed both the public and private sectors. He worked as a research physicist at AVCO, the Naval Research Laboratory, OptiMetrics, and most recently for Applied Technology Associates in Albuquerque, where he worked closely with the Air Force Research Laboratory. In 1985, he joined the Muffoletto Optical Co. as Vice President, and from 1987 to 1992, he was the President and co-founder of NU-TEK Precision Optical Company in Belcamp, MD. In addition to his outstanding accomplishments in optics, Jim's multi-dimensional talents led him to achievements in other areas. He pursued many varied interests during his lifetime including sailing, art, classical music, the literature of James Joyce, woodworking, gourmet cooking, collecting cars for restoration, travel in Europe and winemaking. His passion for fine wine led him to his second career. After many years of amateur winemaking, sampling and collecting fine wines from all over the world, Jim decided to formally study viticulture and oenology. He planted a vineyard in Las Nutrias in 1996, and subsequently founded Tierra Encantada Winery in 2005, where he served as President and winemaker until his death. As part of his second career, he also served as the President of the Rio Grande Chapter of the New Mexico Vine and Wine Society and a member of the Board of Directors of New Mexico Wine Country. Jim is mourned by his family and all who knew him as a friend, a physicist, and a winemaker. He is survived by his devoted wife and companion of 23 years, Pat Coil; his loving children, Jim's pride and joy, Brigid Kenney and her husband, Dan, of Mechanicsville, MD; Stephen Dowling and his wife, Joni, of Woodbridge, VA; Kevin Dowling of Chantilly, VA; and their mother, Carol Dowling, of Annapolis, MD; and his granddaughter, Ashton Kenney, of Mechanicsville, MD, the bright hope for the future. FARNHAM -- Edith Peltonen Farnham, 85, a resident of Albuquerque since 1982, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2008. Edith was born on May 30, 1923, the daughter of Ernest and Hilma Peltonen in Newport, NH. She graduated from Towle High School in Newport in 1941. She is survived by her husband, Lee Farnham; son, Eric Farnham and wife Mary of Wildomar, CA; daughter, Vicki Morgan and husband Robert of Albuquerque; granddaughters, Sarah Lynch of Albuquerque and Rebecca Morgan of West Hollywood, CA, Sarah's husband Jesse and children Reija and Teija; granddaughter, Michelle Peters and children Ryan and Shelby of Murrieta, CA; and sister, Arlene Peltonen of Newport, NH. Edith will be deeply missed by all her family and by the many friends she has made in all the places where she lived. GALLEGOS -- Raymond C. Gallegos, 73, a resident of Albuquerque passed away July 8, 2008. Mr. Gallegos is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nellie Gallegos; four children, Steve Gallegos, Bruce Gallegos and wife, Shannon, Debra Gallegos, Jude Gallegos; his daughters-in-law, Connie Montoya and Brenda Gallegos; his sisters, Mary Montano and Emma Ferris; his brother, Ruben Gallegos; 12 grandchildren, Juanita, Jessica, Adam, Carlos, Nicholas, J.J., Brianna, Mariah, Rodni-Lauren, Steven, Anastasia and Jacqueline; two great-grandchildren, Jose and Araceli; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Ray was also an AVID baseball player and fan, and he was also a player in the Senior Baseball League for the past eight years. HAUGE -- Jerald Oliver Hauge, age 67, longtime resident of the Albuquerque area, passed away at sunrise surrounded by his wife and children, on July 7, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Elizabeth (Betty), children; Eric Hauge, Joseph Hauge, Jennie and Garrett Robinson and their children Sarah and Karen, Samuel and Misty Hauge and their son, Devon, Robert and Cheryl Hauge and their children, Thade, Tristen, and Dylan, JoAnne and Nathan Bishop and their children, Trenton, and Kara, and Rebecca Hauge. He is also survived by three sisters; Shirley Oines, Betty Hauge, and Judy and Al Lynch, and one brother, Arlan and Katherine Hauge, and several nieces and nephews. Jerald was born on April 14, 1941 in Lac qui Parle County, MN, to the late Salmer and June Hauge. He served his country as a Green Beret in the United States Army from 1963-1966. Jerald was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church where he held many leadership positions including Council President. He was a strong man, and his joy was his family. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Ambercare Hospice and St. Catherine Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center. JACOBI -- Richard C. "Jake" Jacobi age 82, of Albuquerque, passed away Sunday July 6, 2008 at a local hospital. He was born September 29, 1925 in Buhl, ID, to Robert and Mary Jacobi. He married Adah D. "Sandy" Sander in October of 1949, and she preceded him in death after 58 yrs of marriage. After High School graduation Jake joined the United States Navy serving 27 years as a Navy pilot, flight instructor, and retired as a Lt. Commander. He was the youngest of four children, all of whom served in the Armed Services. Following his retirement from military service, he went to practice accounting with several local businesses. He was a member for many years with The Duke City Exchange Club, working on various service projects in the area. Jake and his wife loved to travel near and far, he enjoyed working around the home as well as building furniture. Surviving are his daughters, Sue Jacobi and Diane Jacobi both of Rio Rancho; his extended family Elisa A. Bowyer and her husband Charles of Albuquerque, Christopher A. Foster, Alfred D. Foster, Daniel Koehler all of Albuquerque; cousin Lawrence Vickers and his wife Nancy of Spring Grove, PA; numerous friends and his very special buddy "Taz". MCGUIRE -- Glenn Malcom McGuire, 82, was born Friday, November 20, 1925 in Granite, OK to Grady and Gladys McGuire. He was raised in Logan, NM. Glenn was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Betty Jo; and his brother, Martin. MOELLER -- Florence G. Moeller, 97, a long time resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday afternoon, July 6, 2008. She is survived by three sons, William, Charles and Robert; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; and brother, Wilbert Kirschensteiner. In her younger years, she was a legal secretary in Cleveland, OH, where she prepared the papers for the founding of Women's Federal Savings and Loan which later became Key Corp. For many years, she was an active member of the Palo Duro Rock Hounds and the Annunciation Golden Agers. In her later years she liked reading, especially Tony Hillerman's works. MURRAY -- Cdr. Jack Lee Murray, (USN, ret.), passed away at his home on 30 June 2008, with family at his side. He was born in Meeker, OK on September 1, 1930 and grew up in rural Oklahoma. He loved Western movies and was a lifelong John Wayne fan. Heavily involved with the Boy Scouts of America, he passed a love of scouting along to his children. Jack enlisted in the United States Navy in 1947 and served proudly for 28 years, rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer in 1955 and retiring as a Commander in 1975. On his Christmas leave in 1951, he met Gerene Mitchell, and they were married on March 4, 1952. After retiring, Jack completed studies began through correspondence abroad and achieved a Bachelor's Degree in General Studies from the University of New Mexico, also earning a Phi Beta Kappa Key. Jack and Gerene were active in the square dance community, where Jack was a caller for nearly 30 years. They enjoyed traveling throughout the country in their RV, particularly trips their granddaughters took with them. Jack was a history buff and loved to go to casinos. He had a wondrous sense of humor and a dry wit that adorned his natural storytelling ability. A great singer with a perfect ear, Jack taught himself to play guitar and banjo and enjoyed jam sessions with family and friends. He was an avid reader. Jack loved his family and enjoyed being a husband, a father, and a grandfather -"Po." Jack is preceded in death by his wife, Gerene; his parents, Jessie Mae Myrick Powell Murray White and George Lee Murray; his sister, Melba Murray Bell, and his half-brother Bob Powell. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Michael Miller; son and daughter-in-law, SSgt. Dennis (USMC, Ret.) and Diana Murray; granddaughters, Michelle York, Christina Johnstad, and Holly Castillo and their families, including great-grandchildren, Christopher York, Jr., Edward Sedillo, Jr., and Topanga, Diamond, and Emerald Sedillo. He is also survived by grand-sons-in-law, Chris York, CJ Johnstad, Julian Castillo; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, family, and friends. Jack was greatly loved and will be dearly missed. Memorial Service will be held July 11, 2008 at 2:00 p.m., at Asbury United Methodist Church, 10000 Candelaria NE, Albuquerque, NM. He is at rest in Santa Fe National Cemetery.

PERRY -- Jeffrey Logan Perry, of Albuquerque, NM, afflicted 18 years with cerebral palsy and scoliosis has gone home to be with the Lord. Jeffrey, an only child, is survived by his loving mother, Carolyn Perry; grandparents, Cleaon and Dorothy Perry; and a host of great-uncles, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends. RAINES -- Dennis Raines, 46, a resident of Albuquerque died Monday, July 7, 2008 in a trucking accident. He is survived by his wife Martha Raines; son, Shayne; daughter, Sky and husband Martin; daughter, Samantha and fiance Kevin; son, Scott; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; father, Herbert Raines; and two brothers; and two sisters. Dennis was a Greyhound driver for over 16 years in St. Louis, MO and moved back to Albuquerque where he worked for Swift Trucking. Dennis found peace in the Jemez Mountains and loved to camp there. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be deeply missed by his family. RHOADS -- Vadis Rhoads, 96, a resident of Albuquerque for 57 years, passed away on Friday, July 4, 2008. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Geneva James and her family, and Joe and Sharon Hess, and Reba Huffman all of Ohio; neice Carolyn Antill and her husband, Lawrence and their family, of England; and the Gardner family of Vermont. She is also survived by many beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, James Rhoads. Vadis arrived in New Mexico on the train on July 1, 1951 to be married July 2, 1951 in Santa Fe, NM. She taught English for many years at Garfield Junior High School. Prior to moving to Albuquerque she taught music and piano lessons in Ohio, and was an accomplished pianist herself. SARRELS -- Hugh Conway Sarrels, age 78, a resident of Jarales, passed away at his home on Monday, July 7, 2008. Hugh was a Christian man who enjoyed studying the Bible. He was a member of the Peralta Memorial United Methodist Church. He was also an avid golfer, and loved his family more than anything. He went to be with his Lord on the 50th anniversary of going to work for the Albuquerque Publishing Company, July 7, 1958. He began his career as an advertising salesman and he was still currently employed as a consultant. Hugh is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty Sarrels; daughter, Sandy Blaine and her husband, Tom of Jarales; one brother, Jim Sarrels of Chicago; grandchildren, Christopher Lee Blaine, Caitlyn Noel Blaine and Samuel Conway Blaine; nieces and nephews, Jim Sarrels and his wife, Pam, Bob Sarrels and his wife, Colleen, Paula Darner and her husband, Kurt, Lynna Rowell and her husband, David and Bryant Foster. Hugh made many special friends during his life. Among those were Tom Lang, Bill Lang, Dave Puddu, Elliott Pierce, and Brian Fantl. All Services will be held at the Peralta Memorial United Methodist Church on Friday, July 11, 2008. VANDEVENDER -- Madge Gully VanDevender, age 98, died on July 8, 2008, in Albuquerque, NM. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, John Pace VanDevender, who died in 1993. A native of Kemper County, MS, Mrs. VanDevender was the daughter of John William and Annie Jarvis Gully and the oldest of five siblings, all brothers. Mrs. VanDevender graduated from what is now the University of Southern Mississippi. She was a teacher in the Jackson Public Schools, retiring in 1974 after many years of service. She was a resident of Jackson, MS for 51 years, relocating to Aurora, CO, in 1995. In 2003 she moved to Albuquerque, NM. Survivors include her daughter, Mary Ann VanDevender Campbell of Clifton, VA; her son, J. Pace VanDevender of Albuquerque; five grandchildren: and three great-grandchildren.
