He worked for the University Food Stores department as a butcher while attending school, and after graduating with a business degree, became the UNM Food Purchasing Agent. During that time, he managed and worked the University's concession stands for all the basketball and football games. Because of his hard work ethic, outstanding loyalty and dedication to UNM, he was promoted to Purchasing Agent. He worked in that capacity until his retirement in 1981. He received a gold retirement watch. Papa met his neighbor, Edith Norman, and asked her to tutor him in his university studies. They became great friends, and a romance blossomed. Papa was a cook. While at the University, if there was a steak-fry for any sporting event, Papa was the cook. He personally purchased, prepared and cooked thousands of steaks. The UNM Tucker and McGuire Golf Tournaments were his favorites. He always enlisted family and friends to help him. Papa was a survivor. He survived congestive heart failure at age 73. Ologia was a devout and lifelong catholic who put her uttermost trust and well being in Gods hands. She had a personal relationship with the Lord that she was not ashamed to share with anyone. Throughout her life, she faced hardships that could have easily broken the soul of many people, but she remained a person who could see the beauty in life. She attributed her strength not to herself, but to the faith that was instilled in her by her mother. People were moved by her prayer and often requested her version of the rosary as she incorporated song. Ologia was a native New Mexican from Atrisco, something that she and her family were very proud of. Ologia was a person who seemed to not age, as people often told her, but instead remained very young at heart. Those who had the opportunity to meet her will not forget her laughter and sense of humor, because her laugh was contagious and her outlook on life always gave a sense of encouragement. Those who knew her will remember numerous invitations to the Bingo, if not that, "How about the Casino?" Her voice brought joy to people's hearts and tears to there eyes. She was a recent and proud member of the "Sunbeams" choir. Her time spent with friends and family was something that she was proud of and enjoyed. You couldn't leave her home without receiving a complement. Being hospitable wasn't something she worked at but seemed to come as second nature. She was looking forward to her yearly holiday celebration of praying, singing, dancing the Comanche dances, and eating with family on Christmas Eve. Ologia, Mom, Grandma, "Gram", Sister, Auntie, and Friend will be forever missed. As we continue on with our lives we will carry her strength, love, faith, and joy for life with us always.
