ATENCIO -- FRANCES TORRES Atencio family Matriarch, Frances Torres Atencio, was born to eternal life on October 25, 2007. She passed away peacefully surrounded by friends and family as her husband Luis held her hand. She was born on February 7, 1924 in Miami, Arizona to Rafael and Lydia Torres. In 1944 she graduated from Miami High School. She met the love of her life, Luis L. Atencio, when he was visiting his brother who was working in the mines in Arizona. They were married in 1946 and settled in Espanola where they lived in the house where Luis was born. She brought her unique style, her warm personality, her tireless work ethic, and her unbending faith to the Valley. They founded El Paragua Restaurant in 1966 in the former Atencio family tack rooms and sheds. Using her recipes, El Paragua became famous, and her cooking won acclaim nationally with articles featured in many publications, including Bon Appetit, Gourmet, and The New York Times. She personally supervised the kitchen with the help of all her children and loyal staff. Until recently she would direct the food preparation from her home when she couldn't be there herself. She enjoyed gardening and won first place ribbons at the NM State Fair for her beautiful flowers. Her hobbies also included quilting, sewing, and playing the piano. She was active in the Santa Cruz de la Canada Catholic Church and in living her faith. Mrs. Atencio was predeceased by her parents; her mother-in-law, Noberta Atencio; brothers, Rafael Torres, Jr. and Edward Torres; her sister, Evelyn Torres; infant daughter, Anna Marie Atencio; and a granddaughter, Anna Marie Atencio. She is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years and business partner, Luis; and children, Lorenzo Atencio, Pedro Atencio and Diane, Dorothy Maestas, Olga Garcia, and Eugene, Maria F. Atencio, Chris Atencio and Marcella, Jose Atencio and Alicia, Angela Sanchez and James, and Ralph Atencio and Julie; her large family in both California and Arizona; Andres Torres and Gloria, Apolinar Torres and Mary, David Bouvet and Annie, and Clara Pedroza, Theresa Bojorquez and Hector, numerous nieces and nephews, many other relatives, staff members and her caretakers, Adelina and Salud. Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Block-Salazar Mortuary, and also on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Canada. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the same Church on Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. Serving as the main celebrant will be Father Ron Carrillo. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Serving as Pallbearers will be Jeff Atencio, Andrew Atencio, Mario Atencio, Javier Atencio, Miguel Atencio, Joey Atencio, Rafael A. Atencio, Gabriel Atencio and Lorenzo Torres. BUDDRIUS -- Wilma Louise Buddrius, passed away at home the evening of October 24, 2007. Wilma was a dedicated homemaker, loving wife and exceptional mother and a devoted friend to many people. She will be greatly missed by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Buddrius and son, Paul Buddrius. She is survived by four daughters, Lorelei Bintz of Rio Rancho, Lavona Mason of Aiken, South Carolina and Deborah Jackson and Brenda Sanchez of Albuquerque, NM. DEMARR -- Ralph DeMarr, 77, Professor Emeritus UNM, passed away at home in Albuquerque, NM in early October 2007. He earned a PhD in Analysis from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champagne in 1961. After that he went to the University of Moscow as a post-doc. Professor DeMarr first taught at University of Washington at Seattle, then joined the University of New Mexico Mathematics Department in 1968 and retired in the mid 1990s. Starting 1965, his mathematics research switched to a field called ordered structures. In this field, four PhD students, all graduated from UNM, wrote thesis under him. His contribution in mathematics was that he provided a new way to examine the field of ordered structures. His co-workers and students all praise him as an extremely generous and kind person always willing to share ideas and help people. He was a world traveler and knew many languages, including Russian, French, and Italian. Cremation has taken place and private services will be held in accordance with his wishes. He is survived by his longtime friend and companion, Luci Torres and her family. Memorial donations may be sent to the American Mathematical Society (use AMS website) and the American Heart Association.

DUNFORD -- MERCEDES M. Mrs. Mercedes M. Dunford, 80, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on October 25, 2007, and is now in Heaven with Our Lord. Mrs. Dunford is survived by her sister, Connie Chavez and Lowell Irvine; five brothers, Ralph Sedillo and wife, Ernestine, Joseph Sedillo and wife, Emma, Raymond Sedillo and wife, Priscilla, Ernest Sedillo and wife, Mary, Ramon Sedillo and wife, Cynthia; one niece, Bernice Chavez and husband, Cruz Mirabal; two aunts, Lupe Gonzales and Vicki Platteborze and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. ESPINOSA -- Pete C. Espinosa, 86, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, October 25, 2007 at his home in Socorro, NM surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 29, 1921 in Gibson, NM to Telesforo and Guadalupe (Urbina) Espinosa. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII where he served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Babbitt Espinosa of their home in Socorro; son, George P. Espinosa of Hoffman Estates, IL; daughters: Arlene Sandoval and husband, Gabriel of Gallup, NM; and Antionette Romero and husband, Reyes of Socorro; grandchildren: Matthew Kemp, Christi Del Curto, Gayleen Morales, Tina Abbott, Jennifer Miller and Tanya Romero; great-grandchildren: Kira Del Curto, Alyssa Morales, Mikayla Morales, Brandon Amaro, Peyton Miller, Alex Amaro, Emily Del Curto, Reid Miller, Catherine Abbott, Caitlin Kemp, Jacob Del Curto and Aiden Morales. A Rosary will be recited on Sunday, October 28, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at San Miguel Catholic Church. FITZ-GERALD -- Dorothy Ann Burke Fitz-Gerald, 63, passed away after a brief illness on Monday, October 22, 2007, in Rome, Italy. Born in Gallup, NM, on July 26, 1944 to Mary Noonen Burke and Frank J. Burke, the loving mother and wife called Albuquerque home. A graduate of St. Pius X High School, the Southwestern Art and History enthusiast was recognized in Who's Who in American Colleges following her matriculation from Loretto Heights College in Denver, CO. Upon returning to Albuquerque, she served as a public health nurse with the Bernalillo County Health Department, later marrying Gerald Fitz-Gerald, Jr. on August 19, 1967. Throughout her life, Dorothy was an active philanthropist in the community, most notably as a docent for the Albuquerque Museum, a board member of Casa Angelica, a home for developmentally disabled children, and as a fundraiser for the Nancy Floyd Haworth Breast Cancer Foundation, recently spearheading an innovative library education program throughout New Mexico. She will be deeply missed. She is survived by her husband, Gerald with whom she recently celebrated the couples' 40th anniversary; two children, Gerald (Trey) Fitz-Gerald III, of Salt Lake City, UT and Erin Elizabeth Fitz-Gerald of Albuquerque; one grandchild, Catherine Ann Fitz-Gerald Lacey (Katie); four brothers, John P. Burke and wife, Patricia of Austin, TX, Michael F. Burke and wife, Virginia of Tucson, AZ, Joseph K. Burke and wife, Mary Ellen of Denver, CO and James P. Burke and wife, Gaye of Tucson, AZ; one sister, Kathleen Burke Anthony of Albuquerque; and many loving nephews, nieces and countless friends. GARCIA -- Procopio "Pete" G. Garcia, was born on November 19, 1916, to Carlos H. Garcia and Juanita Gabaldon Garcia, on Gabaldon Road, in Albuquerque. Garcia died on October 24, 2007. Garcia, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, established several successful businesses along historic Rio Grande Boulevard, including Charlie's Beer Garden, Pete's 66 Service Station, and others. He was friendly and outgoing and known for his humor, wit, generosity, and his devotion to his family. People would seek Garcia for informed and engaging conversations on sports, politics, and humor. Garcia served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and the U.S. Marines, and was an active member of the Albuquerque CCC-Alumni Chapter. In 2006, Garcia was recognized as a Duke of Alburquerque. Garcia is survived by his daughters, Juanita Garcia Sanchez and her husband, Bernie S. Sanchez; and Teresa Garcia Mayfield and husband, Daniel J. Mayfield; and grandchildren, Derron L. Sanchez, Kerri L. Sanchez Yamashita, Dan Mayfield Jr., and Marietta Mayfield. He was preceded in death by his brother, Toby Garcia; and sister, Meres Garcia Brown. HOOD -- - Doris E. Hood, 79, of Albuquerque, passed away on Monday, October 22, 2007. She was born on April 12, 1928 in Estancia, NM to the late Harry A. Nidey and Pauline C (Dean) Nidey. Doris was a 1945 graduate of Albuquerque High School. Following graduation, Doris went to work for Mountain Bell where she worked for 35 years retiring in 1982. She later worked for Hinkle Law Offices for 15 years. Doris is survived by a daughter, Jana Kelly and husband, Garry Kelly; a son, Jeff Hood and wife, Deborah Hood; five grandchildren, Tenaya and husband, Kyle Stephens, Cody Kelly, John Hood, Matt Zamora; and one great-grandson, Cody Michael Kelly; and one sister, Dorothy Wadlow. HOUK -- Howard Franklin Houk, 93, of Albuquerque died on October 24, 2007. His loving wife of 60 years, Merle, preceded him in death in 2004 and his son, Delbert, in 1963. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Field; two granddaughters, Jessica and Olivia Field of London, England; a great-nephew, Bob Hall of Albuquerque; and numerous other family members. Howard was a well known attorney in New Mexico for over 50 years. He was First Assistant Attorney General for New Mexico in 1941 and United States Attorney from 1942-1946. He served as Attorney for the New Mexico Board of Medical Examiners and the New Mexico Medical Society for over 25 years. He also served on the New Mexico Selective Service Appeals Board, the State Parole Board and was President of The State Bar from 1954-1955. He enjoyed reciting poetry, cooking, entertaining his many friends, and walking with his dogs. He always donned a beautiful Stetson hat. A family interment will take place at Fairview Cemetery, followed by a Celebration of Howard's life. MYERS -- Joel Bruce Myers, born October 19, 1923 in French Corners, NM, to Francis Leroy Myers and Margie Bruce, was the eldest of four children: Joel, Ruth, Wayne, and Jean. Thursday, October, 25, 2007, he passed away peacefully at the Albuquerque VA Hospital. He is survived by his sister, Ruth Farmer, five sons: W. Martin and wife, Deanna, Dan E. and wife, Donna, W. Bruce and wife, Connie, R. Michael, and Anthony; 20 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Joel attended Jefferson Jr. High and Albuquerque High School, served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, worked for Holloman and Kirtland Air Force bases as an airplane mechanic, and was an accomplished pilot. Since the late '80s he has been living on the family ranch in LaJara, NM. Both Memorial Services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - one at the Regina Branch in Regina, NM, at 10:00 a.m., and the other at the Bernalillo Ward in Bernalillo, NM, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite cancer research group. In place of a viewing, there will be a video of Joel's life playing both before and following the Services.

NICHOLS -- Charles (Charlie) Robert Nichols Sr., 76 passed away October 18, 2007 at home in Canton, NC. He was born in Franklin, NC on September 28, 1931. Charlie, a former resident of Albuquerque attended Albuquerque High School but graduated with the first graduating class of Highland High School in 1950. Charlie spent 3 years in the Army serving in Korea where he received a Purple Heart. He then attended UNM where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. In 1960 he obtained his law degree from George Washington University. Charlie was employed by Honeywell as Director of Programing for 31 years until he retired in 1992. Charlie leaves behind two daughters, Nancy Alzate of Albuquerque, NM, Lisa Konietzko and husband, Mark of Big Lake, MN; and sons, Charles R. Nichols Jr. and his wife, Marcie of Tampa, FL, Robert Price Nichols of St Paul, MN; a sister, Jean Baldoni and her husband,Tom of Albuquerque, NM; and four grandchildren. Charlie was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan McKinnon; and second wife, Sue Gibbs Nichols; brother, Homer (Nick) Nichols; and parents, Homer and Myrtle Nichols. PASNEWSKI -- Chester Pasnewski, aged 82, passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2007. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary; and two sons, Mark and Paul, all of Albuquerque. Chet was preceded in death by his son, Kurt of Roswell, NM. He was a sergeant in the US Army during WWII in Europe. Throughout his life he was active in the banking and legal fields. Chet was a member of the NM State Bar for 50 years. He was active in the Catholic Church, and was a member of the Albuquerque Host Lions Club for many years. RIVERA -- John C. Rivera, age 99, of Raton, passed away in Raton on Wednesday, October 24, 2007. He was born March 30, 1908 in Cimarron, NM. The son of Basilio and Emelia (Martinez) Rivera. John was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Theresa after 64 years of marriage; son, Levi; grandson, Richard; four brothers; and two sisters. He is survived by daughters, Susie Apodaca and husband, Manuel of Raton, Patricia Yardley of Fountain, CO, and Mary Lou Quakenbush and husband, Bill of Denham Springs, LA; son, David L. THOMAS-WEGER -- Jon Thomas-Weger, 58, president of the Central New Mexico Labor Council and New Mexico labor leader, suffered a sudden heart attack and passed away in his yard Thursday, October 18, 2007. He was born August 9, 1949 in Des Moines, IA, to Jim and Gloria Thomas. He was partner and husband to Roxie Weger-Thomas for 25 years. Jon is also survived by his three daughters, Saida and Rachel Thomas of Albuquerque and Jerusha Thomas of Monroe, LA; grandson, Beau Sandoval of Albuquerque; father, Jim Thomas of San Antonio, TX; brother, Jeff Thomas of Dehra Dun, India; sister, Jan. Dunlap of San Antonio; and his Sun Dance family. Jon was a letter carrier for 35 years, and was active in numerous labor, political and social justice activities. He dedicated his life to the Salt of the Earth people. A spirit sending ceremony was conducted Monday by Cliinton Thunderchief. A public celebration will be at the CLC Rank and File Heroes Banquet Saturday, October 27, 2007 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Gardunos on the Green, 9401 Balloon Fiesta Museum Drive, Albuquerque. WOODLING -- David Woodling, 44, of Cedar Crest, passed away unexpectedly in an accident on Thursday, October 25, 2007. David is survived by his wife of 19 years, Suzanne; their daughter, Kimberlee; his parents, Reese and Nancy Woodling of Tucson, AZ; his sister, Anne Woodling and husband, Jerry Humble of Las Cruces; nephew, Ryan and niece, Lauren Humble.
