BATTERSHELL -- Rondee Battershell, 66, a resident of Sacramento, CA for the past 9 years, passed away on Tuesday, August 7, 2007. She was a former resident of Albuquerque since 1953, before moving to Sacramento, CA. Rondee was born September 5, 1940, the daughter of Gene and Ruth Battershell in Indanapolis, IN. Rondee was an Information Systems Analyst for San Joaquin County, CA and had just retired this year, after over 40 years in the computer programming industry. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Albuquerque. Rondee was preceded in death by her father, Gene in 2006 and her mother, Ruth in 1993. Rondee is survived by one brother, Jay Battershell and wife, Chris of Corrales, NM; two sisters, Sally Swanson and husband, Dave of Albuquerque, and Julie Askins and husband, Jim of Pogasa Springs, CO; and four nephews, Peter, Paul, Derek, and Jarrod Battershell. BRAZIL -- Luegena F. Brazil, 79, passed away on August 19, 2007 in Albuquerque. Mrs. Brazil was born on September 8, 1927 in Robert Lee, TX to Benjamin and Hattie Mae Franklin. She married George A. Brazil, Sr. in 1950 and he preceded her in death in 1996. She was a wife and homemaker, with special interests as an automobile racing enthusiast and a winning go-cart driver. She was also a master seamstress. She is survived by her son, George A. Brazil, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Barbara; granddaughter, Errynn Brazil; son, Thomas Allen Brazil; daughter-in-law, Vinetta; granddaughter, AnnMarie Brazil; grandson, Thomas Allen Brazil, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Robin Brazil; great-grandsons, Tyler and Cason Brazil; grandson, Michael Schreader and wife, Roseanne; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Dustin, Justine, and Christian Schreader; daughter, Marlene Mungle; son-in-law, Tom Mungle; granddaughters, Terry Sue, Kelly, Kim, and Jeannie Mungle; brother, A. BYRD -- James Walter "J.W." Byrd, 84, beloved husband, father, grandfather, a special member of "The Greatest Generation," and a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, NM passed away on Thursday, August 23, 2007 with his loving family beside him. Mr. Byrd was born on March 28, 1923 to Walter and Katherine (McCurdy) Byrd of Albuquerque. He was a product of many miracles including being the lone survivor of a crew of ten in a mid-air collision as a bombardier in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was held captive for ten months in a German Prison Camp. Upon his return to the U.S. he married the love of his life, Evelyn Ellis, on January 15, 1947. J.W. will be remembered for his love of ballooning. He was active in the ballooning community for over thirty years including flying, instructing, examining and officiating in the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta and other national ballooning events from 1973 until 2006. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and was an excellent cook. Mr. Byrd is survived by his wife of 60 years, Evelyn Byrd; son, Jim Byrd and his wife, Teresa, and daughter, Niki Byrd-Dickey and her husband, Frank, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Amelia-Ann and Jamie Dickey, and David, Thomas, Matthew and Chris Gallegos; great-grandchildren, Marissa and Isaiah Gallegos; sisters, Beatrice Holmes and her husband, Jim, and Berniece Holmen and her husband, Maurice; numerous nieces and nephews; and a community of many people who loved and respected him. Mr. Byrd is predeceased by his parents and a sister, Mary Evelyn Coleman. CHAVEZ -- Frank A. Chavez, our beloved father and grandfather, went to be with his savior and Lord, Jesus Christ on August 23, 2007. He was preceded in death by his loving wife and lifelong partner, Mrs. Eloiza T. Chavez. He is survived by his loving immediate children, Leo, Frank Jr., Maria, Dale, Agnes, Gene, Juanita, James, Evelyn, Ana, Lisa, and Regina. In addition to his children Mr. Chavez and their respected spouses, Mr. Chavez is survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mr. Chavez was born at the Tule Ranch, Torrance County, NM on September 21, 1915; Mr. Chavez was married on November 27, 1939 to Mrs. Eloiza T. Chavez of Chili, NM. They celebrated their 60th Anniversary in 1999. Mr. Chavez's life and passion was his family, his ranchito and his devotion to the Lord. Mr. Chavez was a great story teller and will be greatly missed by those who knew him. Visitations will be held on Sunday, August 26, 2007 between 6:00-7:00 p.m. at San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church with a Rosary to follow at 7:00 p.m. Final visitations will be held on Monday, August 27, 2007 between 11:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. also at San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church with Mass of Christian Burial to be recited at 12:00 p.m. Interment will be held at Mount Calvary Cemetery. CUMBERLAND -- Marie S. Cumberland, age 87, a resident of Haven Healthcare of Derry, NH, passed away on Wednesday, August 22, 2007 of natural causes. The former Helen Marie Slingland, the daughter of Elsie and John Slingland, was born February 5, 1920, in Washington, D.C., where she later worked for various Government agencies from 1938 through 1943. She was married to Belisario Contreras in 1941. She graduated with a B.Ed. from D.C. Teacher's College in 1959 and subsequently taught at Alice Deal Jr. High School for 10 years. Her marriage to Belisario ended in divorce. She left D.C in 1968 and married Sidney Cumberland of Chicago, IL in 1969. She also taught in the Chicago school system. She later moved to La Plata, MO, where she worked in the graduate school of the Northeast Missouri State University. During that time, she worked on her Masters of Fine Arts. Her marriage to Sidney ended in divorce. She then moved to New Hampshire and worked for the Nevin's nursing home editing their newsletter. She later resided in Albuquerque, NM with her youngest daughter. She worked at the University Hospital in the hospital billing department, from which she later retired. She was a Girl Scout leader in Washington, D.C. from 1953 to 1957. She enjoyed literature, playing piano, painting and listening to classical music. She also enjoyed traveling and the theater. Marie is survived by her family: brother, Frank Slingland and wife, Betty in Lusby, MD. She is survived by daughter, Sharon Ryan and husband, Walter of Nashville, TN; daughter, Suzanne Chappell and husband, Allyn of Derry, NH; daughter, Cathleen Peck and husband, Clay of Munster, IN; nephew, Sidney, Jr. and wife, Susan of Peculiar, MO; nephew, Paul and wife, Joyce of Mundeleine, IL; nephew, Michael of Chicago, IL; nephew, Eric and wife, Beth of Holland, MI. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Jennifer Bodnar, Maya Long, Matisse Long, Mondrian Contreras, Garrett Peck, Alex Peck, Maxwell Peck, Matthew Cumberland, Kaitlyn Cumberland, Lacey Cumberland, Sara Cumberland, and Ian Cumberland. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Justin and Carter Long. She is pre-deceased by her daughter, Sally; her sister, Anna; and her ex-husband, Belisario.

HERRERA -- Gabriel "Gabe" Herrera Jr., age 84, and a resident of Albuquerque, went to be with the Lord on Wedenesday, August 21, 2007, following a brief battle with cancer. Gabe was a decorated US Army Veteran who was an Honorably discharged Veteran of WWII and retired from the United States Postal Service in 1980. Until recently, his greatest enjoyments included visiting local casinos with Margie, and in earlier years, he played an active role in Boy Scout Troop #281. As well, Gabe proudly served as usher within Queen of Heaven Parish and Senior Group and was also an active member of Chapter 4227 Knights of Columbus. Gabe was preceded in death by his parents, Gabriel and Juanita of Socorro; brothers, Herman, Ciriaco and Juan; sisters, Julianita Romero and Fefa Chavez. Gabe, our husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend is survived by his life partner of 60 years, his loving wife, Margie; one son, Gerald of California; two grandsons, Jared of Phoenix and Brandon of Albuquerque; two great granddaughters, with numerous nieces, nephews and friends throughout the area whose lives he touched and who loved and will miss him. HOICE -- Dorothy T. Hoice of Albuquerque died peacefully on August 15, 2007, at her daughter's home in Redondo Beach, California, following a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was 75. Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 27, 2007, at Faith Lutheran Church, 10000 Spain NE, Albuquerque, NM. Dorothy was born Dorothy Norma Turner on July 10, 1932, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to the late James and Elvina (Mickey) Turner. She was Valedictorian of her high school graduating class. She moved to Albuquerque in the mid 1950's and worked as an accountant for FMBSM Architects for 39 years. In 1977 she married John P. Hoice, Past Grand Master of the Masons in New Mexico 1986-1987, who preceded her in death. She was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church, an avid gardener and loved to workout at the gym. Dorothy is survived by her daughter Venita Rae (Weins) McLay and husband, Grant; three grandchildren, Kyla, Tali and Kenzi, Redondo Beach, CA; stepchildren, Evelyn Greenwood, Lexington, KY, Patricia Hoice, Albuquerque, NM, Philip Hoice and his wife, Julie, Vancouver, WA; two sisters, Velma Brady, Austin, TX and Catherine Norris and her husband, Elmer, Dallas, TX. JOHNSON -- Doris J. Johnson, age 75, resident of Albuquerque, NM, passed away suddenly on Sunday, August 19, 2007 after a short illness. Doris was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald L. Johnson in 2001. Doris was born in St. Louis, MO in 1932 and moved to Albuquerque while in Jr. High School. Doris is survived by her four sons and their families: son Darrell L. Johnson of Moreno Valley, CA, granddaughter Kristen, grandson Corey, granddaughter Katelin, and great-grandson Donovan. Son Stephen L. Johnson and his wife Ruth of Rio Rancho, NM. Son Ronald A. Johnson and his wife Eileen of San Diego, CA, grandson Dylan, and granddaughter Morgan. Son Daren K. Johnson and his wife Kristy of Albuquerque, NM, grandson Kevin, granddaughter Brittny, and grandson Kyle. Doris is also survived by her brother Darwin Glaese and his wife Barbara of Boynton Beach, FL and her sister Marion F. Dixon of Albuquerque, NM. Doris has been an Avon Sales Representative for the last 24 years where she received numerous awards. A Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday, August 25, 2007 at 4:00 p.m. at Fellowship Christian Church, 4800 Indian School Rd. in Albuquerque. LAYTON -- Hilda Layton, former Albuquerque resident, died at her Wood River, IL home on August 8, 2007. Hilda and her husband Les resided in Albuquerque from 1947 to 1968 and were the owners of Layton's TV and Appliance Service for may years in Albuquerque, moving to Missouri in 1968 to retire and then to Illinois in 1986. Hilda is survived by Les, her husband of 76 years, daughter Judy Layton Hoffman of Wood River, IL; son and daughter-in-law Spencer and Sue Layton of Albuquerque; eight grandchildren, Fred Johnstone and wife Suzy, Steven, David, Douglas and Tom Johnstone, Tim Hoffman and wife Chris, Donna Hoffman and Cynthia Layton Mascarenas and husband Larry and seven great-grandchildren. Hilda is preceded in death by her daughter Phyllis Layton Johnstone; her brother and her two sisters. Services on August 19 were entrusted to Paynic Home for Funerals in East Alton, IL.

LUCERO -- Manuela (Mary) Lucero, age 92, a resident of La Verne, California passed away Monday, August 20, 2007. She was born December 1, 1914 in Chirisco, NM. She moved from Albuquerque to California 4 1/2 years ago to be with her family. O'NEILL -- Patrick D. O'Neill, 88, a resident of Albuquerque since 1948, died at home, Wednesday, August 22, 2007. He is survived by his daughter, Sheila O'Neill; son, Pat O'Neill and wife, Melissa; daughter, Mary O'Neill; and two grandchildren, Meaghan and Sean. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kitty O'Neill in 1987. Born in Ireland in 1919, Pat immigrated to the United States in 1947 and spent a few days in New York before heading west to Bisbee, Arizona where he was a carpenter. He came to Albuquerque and worked as a construction foreman at Sandia Base. He joined the Albuquerque Police Department in 1950 and served as an officer until 1963. He was President of the Local Chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police and also served for four years as the state president of the FOP. During that time, Pat became a US citizen in 1953. He was the owner of the El Vado Motel from 1963 until his retirement in 1986. Rosary will be recited on Monday, August 27, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. at French Mortuary - Lomas Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd NE. PICA -- Nicholas R. Pica was born in Rochester, NY on Sept 23, 1941 to Celia and Nicholas A. Pica. He died August 21, 2007 in the city he loved, Albuquerque, which has been his home for the last 45 years. Nick was the consummate student exploring both Engineering and Accounting before finding his true calling in Law. He graduated UNM Law School class of 1968 and fervently pursued his lifelong passion practicing Business Law, acting as managing partner of his firm for most of his legal career. He was a giving and active member of his community, a devoted Lobo fan, a musician, a lover of the English language and of books. His quiet love and gentle spirit will be missed most desperately by his family; wife Christine, son Craig, daughter Cheri, stepdaughters Megan Ryan and Ashlie Ryan Yaeger and husband Eric. We will comfort one another and continue to hold you near. What a massive void you leave in our lives way too soon. PIPHER -- Helen Marie Pipher, age 84, of Belen, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, August 20, 2007, surrounded by her family. Helen had been a resident of Belen since 1973. She was born in Champaign, IL on November 8, 1922 and attended the University of Illinois before moving to Albuquerque in 1949. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Belen and also a member of the Daughters of the Nile. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Nora Guinn and a brother, Donald. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Dale Pipher; daughters, Janet Curcione and her husband, Louis of Lewiston, New York and Connie Day and her husband, Rick of Dolores, Colorado; son, Jerry Pipher of Belen; brother, Elmer Guinn, Jr. of Naples, Florida; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Helen's life will be held on Monday, August 27, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Belen, with Rev. Jay Armstrong officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be private. SOLTAU -- Leonard Elton Soltau, 86, a resident of Albuquerque since 1985 and former resident of Pinecreek, MN, died Friday, August 24, 2007. He is survived by daughter, Suzanne Embree and husband Joseph of Albuquerque; son, Karl Rosazza and wife, Barbara of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Jack Rosazza and wife, Traci, Jenny Rosazza, Jessica Rosazza, F. Kersten, Kevin Kersten, Sr., Brenda Catanach and husband, Manuel; great-grandchildren, Isabella, Ryan, Kevin, Jr, Roy, LeeAnne, Tyler, and Jesse; brother, Stanley Soltau and wife, Mable of Pinecreek, MN. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Soltau, their son, Hoyt Soltau, and brothers and sisters. Mr. Soltau was a proud member of the CCC's and was grateful for the opportunity to serve. Mr. Soltau served 20 years in the U.S. Army. He served during WWII and Korea. He retired after 20 years from the Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis, MN as body guard to the president of the bank. SOWELL -- Robert R. (Bob) Sowell, born May 19, 1928, left this earth May 28, 2007 in Port Angeles, WA. Bob received his BS degree from the University of Oklahoma and his master's degree from Oregon State. He worked for Sandia Labs for 39 years. After retirement Bob moved to the State of Washington due to his health. Bob was a Past Master of the Estancia Masonic Lodge. Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Gwendolyn in 1960; parents, Rufus and Irene Sowell; a daughter, Jan Sowell Cowles; a brother, Dr. Harlan Sowell; a sister, Faye Walters; and a nephew, Dr. Doug Sowell. He is survived by his three children, son, Dr. Bok Sowell and wife, Jenny of Boseman, MT, a daughter, Wyn Sanchez and husband, Manuel of Las Vegas, NM, and a daugher, Marlys Sowell of Colorado Springs, CO; his brother, Wayne Sowell and wife, Patti of Los Lunas, NM; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two nieces; and four nephews. TUZICKA -- Ursula Tuzicka, 62, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2007. She is survived by her husband of 22 years, Lester Tuzicka; two children, Frank Wallace and Carol Bucher; two grandchildren, Christina Bucher and Waylon Bucher; and many other relatives and friends. Ursula was born on November 10, 1944 in Frankfurt, Germany and came to the United States in 1965. She loved to garden, working with her flowers, sewing, arts and crafts, and more than anything spending time with her family. Ursula was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. VALDEZ -- Ida M. Valdez, age 88, passed away Sunday, August 19, 2007. A viewing will be held at 8:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, August 25, 2007 at 9:00am at Holy Family Catholic Church, 550 Atrisco Dr. SW. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A reception will then take place at the Carlisle Plaza Mobile Home Park Recreation Center on Carlisle in between Menaul and Candelaria.

WELCH -- Homer E. Welch passed away August 13, 2007 after a full 98 years of life! He is survived by his daughter, Debi and grandchildren, Doug and Barbara. Homer also had three step-sons and several grandchildren! He also will be missed by his best furry friend Joey.
