BARELA -- Ponciano Barela, 85, went to meet his maker on July 8, 2007. Mr. Barela was a member of the United States Army during World War II. He was also retired from Sandia National Laboratories. Mr. Barela is survived by his children, Andy Barela and wife, Esther, Michael Barela and wife, Kathleen, and Cordelia Mora and husband, Sonny; his loving lady, Mary A. Lucero; eight adopted grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. A Rosary for Mr. Barela will be recited on Wednesday evening, July 11, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at Salazar & Sons Mortuary. DEL VALLE -- Susie Alice (Davis/Rivers) nee Momsen, age 91. Born February 24, 1916, she went Home to be with Lord Jesus Christ on July 7, 2007. Preceded in death by husbands, Cliff Davis, Archie Rivers, and Julian Del Valle. She is survived by daughters, Deanna Eder, Judy Callinan; sons, Clellan (Connie) Davis, Wayne Davis; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was the twin of John, and the last surviving of nine Momsen children of St. Paul Park. Cliff and Sue moved from Stillwater to Corrales, NM in 1982, Sue returning to Minnesota in 2004. FORE -- Paul L. Fore, 74, a resident of Albuquerque since 1979, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2007. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Marilyn Fore; their two children, Paul A. Fore of Albuquerque and Cynthia Fore of San Diego, CA; his sister, Joan Allwin of Independence, MO; and other relatives and friends. Paul grew up in St. Joseph, MO, and attended St. Francis Xavier Grade School and Christian Brothers High School. He then went on to achieve a B.S. in Biology from Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, a M.S. in Wildlife Management at Iowa State University in Ames, and a Ph.D. in Biology/Fisheries at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Paul went on to have a successful career with the U.S. Department of Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). His special achievements included being an elected Fellow with the American Institute of Fisheries Research Biologists, receiving an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Silver Medal for Superior Service, FWS Special Achievement Award in 1992 for initiation of the Natural Resource Development and Assessment (NRDA) Restoration Program, and over 25 research publications on fish and wildlife, ecology, mitigation, and NRDA. In addition to his career, Paul dedicated his life to the welfare of his family. When his children were younger, he took much pride in his role as a little league baseball manager. Since retirement, while his health allowed, Paul enjoyed activities such as mountain climbing with the New Mexico Mountain Club, birding with the Audubon Society, hunting small game and migratory birds, and volunteering with the N.M. Donor Services and Organ Transplant Awareness Program (OTAP). He would be happy to know that he was accepted as a candidate for tissue donation. Cremation has taken place and a memorial rosary will be held at French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE, Wednesday, July 11, 2007, 7:00 p.m., with Father Anthony reciting. Paul routinely attended Risen Savior Catholic Church. Mass and Interment will take place at a later date in St. Joseph, Missouri. GAY -- Ruby Loretta Gay was born July 20, 1948 to Joe P. and Lillie Romero in Taos, NM. Sadly, Friday morning, July 6, 2007 our beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and beloved friend, passed away peacefully in her sleep, due to complications of cancer. Ruby was as strong as we all have grown to know and love her for. The loss of Ruby is something that we will all feel for a long time and a great woman was lost on Friday. Ruby was preceded in death by her father, Joe P. Romero and her two sisters, Shirley and Maclovia Romero. She is survived by her mother, Lillie of Santa Fe; her loving husband of 39 years, Vurgel of the family home in Albuquerque; her three sons, Wade and wife, Cecilia of Phoenix, AZ; Tim and Nicole, and Pat, all of Albuquerque; two grandsons, Shaun and Ian; two sisters, JoAnn Muniz of Albuquerque, Diane Lopez and husband, Chris of Pecos; three brothers, Adolfo Romero and wife, Kathy, Eligio Romo and wife, Pat, all of Albuquerque, Johnny Romero and wife, Carol of Los Lunas; as well as a long list of other family members and friends who loved her and will miss her deeply. GERSTEL -- Esther Jimenez Gerstel, 86, passed away on Sunday, July 8, 2007. She was born in Albuquerque, NM on March 16, 1921. Esther met her beloved husband, "Whitey," while they were both serving in the Navy in Clearfield, UT. They were married in 1946. Esther and Whitey owned an operated Whitey's Wallpaper Center and Esther's Ladies' Wear. They also kept a residence in Jemez Springs, NM since 1968 and eventually retired there in 1980. Esther enjoyed singing in the church Choir and exercising with friends at the Palo Duro Senior Center. She had many friends and relatives in New Mexico and will be greatly missed by her loving family. Esther was preceded in death by her beloved husband, "Whitey." She is survived by her daughter, Judy and husband, David Clarke of FL; sons, Chuck and wife, Sharon, and Steve, all of Albuquerque; six grandchildren, Jason and wife, Michelle, Jennifer and husband, Patrick, Melissa, Brittany, Ashley, and Dustin; three great-grandchildren, Colin, Madison, Delaney and one more due any day. HIGHTOWER -- Nellie Hightower, 95, a longtime Albuquerque resident, passed peacefully at the home of her daughter in Tucson, AZ, on July 5, 2007. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fortunato and Teresa Rino; brothers, Frank "Chico" and Fortunato "Forty"; and sisters, Rose, Francis "Fannie", Mary "May", and Margaret. She is survived by daughter, Beverly and husband, Kenneth Crawford of Tucson; and son, Charles Gardner and his wife, Carol of Rochester, NY; grandchildren, Christina, Anthony, and Michael Crawford of Tucson, Bob, Jim, and Jeff Gardner and Patty Portland, all of Rochester. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews who were very special to her. Nellie will always be remembered as a very independent and strong willed woman who worked hard her whole life even into her eighties. She was always very giving to those around her and no matter what time of the day or night company would drop by she would always make sure they were VERY well fed. As the matriarch of the Rino family her presence in the family will be greatly missed. A celebration of Nellie's life will be held graveside at Trinidad Masonic Cemetery in Trinidad, CO on July 20, 2007 at 2 p.m.

IBARRA -- JOSEPHINE Mrs. Josephine Ibarra, 65, born in Pecos, NM and a resident of Albuquerque passed away on July 9, 2007, and is now in Heaven with our Lord. Mrs. Ibarra is the beloved wife to Mr. Luis Ibarra Sr., married for 28 years. Mrs. Ibarra is also survived by her loving children, Debra Martinez and husband, Cipriano Villezcas, Marcella Chavez and husband, Ray, Lupe Ortega, Erwin Martinez, Angelica Dominguez and husband, David, Luis Ibarra Jr. and Lawrence Ibarra; three sisters, Rose Bergen and husband, Jack, Gloria Barela and husband, Isidoro, Inez Otero and husband, Vicente; one brother, Filimon Vigil and wife, Doris; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends and will be missed very much. Mrs. Ibarra was preceded in death by her brothers, Tom Vigil and Bartolo Vigil, her sister, Nickie Garcia and her parents, Antonio and Guadalupe Vigil. Mrs. Ibarra was a member of the Catholic Church. Visitation for Mrs. Ibarra will be Wednesday afternoon from 2:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel. JAY -- Janine M. Jay, 81, passed away on July 7, 2007, in Albuquerque, NM . She was born in Chicago and graduated from Notre Dame High School. She married her beloved husband, Raymond Jay, in 1945. They moved their young family to Southern California in 1955, living in Azusa, then Covina. Janine was a registered nurse and especially loved her work for the Red Cross. She was a longtime member of St. Louise de Marillac Catholic Parish in Covina. After retirement, Janine loved traveling the world with Ray, bringing home tales of new friendships and adventures. Following her husband's death 10 years ago, she moved to Albuquerque where she enjoying living with her daughter and granddaughters. Janine is survived by her sons, Lawrence Jay and wife, Marilyn of Santa Rosa, CA, Charles Jay and wife, Patricia of Homer, AK; and daughters, Nancy Jay of Albuquerque, and Marianne Jay Gebramariam of Washington. She has eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her sister Isabelle, and brother-in-law Arthur Royce of Covina; brothers and sisters in-law; and many nieces and nephews. JOHNSON -- Geraldine Kay Johnson, 67, passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2007 after a brief illness. All of those who knew Geraldine admired her for her gentleness, resilience, and confidence, but, most of all, we admired her for her ability to survive tremendous adversity. She cared deeply for the creatures of the earth and found great joy in her frequent visits to the Rio Grande Zoo. Geraldine was a member of the First United Methodist Church. KERSH -- Blake Forrest Kersh Jr. passed away in Raton, NM on Sunday July 8, 2007. He was at his home and surrounded by family. Blake was born in Shamrock, TX on June 6, 1925 and graduated from Shamrock High School in 1943. Upon graduation from high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp. He was a Staff Sergeant in the 345th Bombardment Group, "Air Apaches". He participated in the following campaigns: Air Offensive in Japan, Bismarck Archipelago, New Guinea, South Philippines, Luzon, and Western Pacific. Blake received decorations for the American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific Theater, Philippines Liberation, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal. Following his honorable discharge from the Army Air Corp, he attended and was graduated from Texas Tech University. After graduation he worked for Amarillo Hardware for several years and then was a life underwriter for Equitable Life Assurance Society of New York. He married Wilma Moore in Raton, NM July 27, 1953. Blake loved working in his garden and taking care of his yard and house. Blake was a wonderful father and husband. He is survived by his loving spouse of 54 years, Wilma Moore Kersh. He is also survived by his children, Krista J. Kersh and husband, Randy Hicks of Albuquerque, NM; Blake F. Kersh III of Raton, NM; Gene M. Kersh, wife, Ellen and sons, Andrew and Stephen of Albuquerque, NM; Timothy H. Kersh, wife, Conna Meader and son, Lyle of Albuquerque, NM; Jeffrey J. LOYD -- Everett Webber Loyd, 79, of Tijeras, NM passed away Friday, July 9, 2007 in Truth or Consequence, NM. Everett was born March 15, 1928 in Tijeras, NM to Green B. and Alma A. (Allred) Loyd. MARIETTA -- Elizabeth "Buffy" Marietta, 53, a resident of Lake Oswego, OR, died July 4, 2007. She is survived by her son, Hunter Hetfeld of Camus, WA; mother, Constance Dempsey of Santa Barbara, CA; father, Walter Damler and his wife, Barbara of Tucson, AZ; brothers, Fritz Damler and wife, Mari of Wisconsin and Bahamas, Chris Dempsey of Santa Fe, NM; and sister, Carla Ward of Sandia Park, NM; as well as numerous step-siblings and cousins and aunts scattered through out the country. She was born February 28, 1954 in Oshkosh, WI and was raised in California and New Mexico. After graduating from the University of New Mexico she worked for the Department of Energy in Albuquerque. Following two years of service in the Peace Corps in Bulgaria, Ms. Marietta moved to the Portland, OR area four years ago to pursue her interests in acting and real estate. Devoted to her son and family, Buffy made friends easily and touched many lives with laughter, good humor and a zeal for adventure. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in New Mexico in the fall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local Animal Humane Society.

MARTIN -- Daniel Tunnie Martin, M.D. passed away on July 8, 2007 at home in Albuquerque. Dr. Martin was born on November 28, 1953 in Nagpur, Madhya, India to Tunnie Martin, Jr., of Orangeburg, South Carolina and the late Eloise Madrid Butler Martin of Holy Pond, Alabama. Both were missionaries of Board of Global Ministries of the Methodist Church on assignment in India. Daniel graduated from The Woodstock School in Mussouri, India in 1972. The family lived in Ithaca, New York during various furloughs from the mission field. As a young man, he achieved the level of Eagle from the Boy Scouts of America. He received a BA degree in Biology and Music from Anderson College in Anderson, Indiana in 1976. One of the highlights of his college life was participating in a World Tour as a member of the Anderson College Choir. The Ohio State University was Daniel's selection for post-graduate study where, in 1980, he earned the degree of Doctor of Medicine, followed by Post-Doctorial studies in General Surgery and Surgical Research. After serving as the Administrator of the Surgical Resident Training Program at The Ohio State University Hospitals, Daniel began private practice in Fremont, Ohio, and was the Chief of Surgery at Fremont Memorial Hospital and Clinical Assistant Professor of Medical College of Ohio. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and was certified by The American Board of Surgery. He was also a fellow of the American Medical Association and was inducted into the Robert Zollinger Surgical Society of The Ohio State University. In addition to his work as a general surgeon, Dr. Martin traveled across the U.S., South America and Europe training surgeons in the newly introduced techniques of laparoscopic surgery. He published numerous professional journals and articles. Daniel spent the later portion of his career as Assistant Professor of Surgery, Division of Surgical Endoscopy and Laparoscopy at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. His heart was in teaching others. Dan loved sports, Ohio State University football, golf, shooting, hunting, driving fast, laughing, making music and having fun. Dan met and married Carolyn Sue Campbell of Lancaster, Ohio while both were employed at The Ohio State University Hospitals. Dan is survived by his wife, Carolyn and three children, Joshua Martin, 17, Caitlyn Martin, 16, of Albuquerque, NM. and Jared Collins of Lancaster, Ohio. In the footsteps of her father, Caitlyn plans to spend her 11th grade at The Woodstock School in India. Dr. Martin is also survived by his father, Dr. Tunnie Martin, Jr.; a brother, John Paul; and a sister, Seema, all of Columbus, Ohio; mother-in-law, B. Maxine Campbell of Albuquerque, NM; brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael D. Campbell and spouse, Mary Wiley Campbell of Houston, Texas, and Stephen E. Campbell and spouse, Cecilia Lynn Fisher Campbell of Lancaster, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. Dan's remembrance will also live on in stories that will be told by hundreds of people whose lives were touched by this uniquely remarkable and special man. MARTINEZ -- Alejandro "Alex" Martinez was born December 4, 1951 in Bernalillo, NM. He passed away Monday, July 9, 2007. Alex loved the outdoors, especially fishing, boating, deer hunting and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry B. and Luciana Martinez and one brother, Edward Martinez. Alex is survived by his wife of 22 years, Isabel of the family home in Bernalillo; one daughter, Ramona Martinez and husband, Javier of Bernalillo; one son, Tino Martinez and wife, Geraldine of Albuquerque; two grandsons, Josetino and Javier Jr.; one sister, Anita Griego and husband, Mamo of Bernalillo; one brother, Anthony Martinez and wife, Diana of San Ysidro, NM; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends who loved and will miss him. MCCOY -- Raynel McCoy, 66, a native of Cuba, NM, passed away on Friday, July 6, 2007. Loving family members were by his side when he peacefully joined our Lord and Savior. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernabe and Emilia McCoy; his brother, Lalo McCoy; and great-grandson, Juan Chavez. He is survived by his wife, Isel; sons, Anthony, Michael, and Joseph; daughter, Bernice Armijo and husband, Tito; daughter, Nancy Valdez and husband, Mike; daughter, Debbie Ramirez; and nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, all of Las Vegas, NV. Raynel lived in Cuba, NM for his first 48 years where he worked as a heavy equipment operator for the state DOT. After retiring he moved to Nevada where he spent the last 18 years. He had a passion for hunting and fishing in both New Mexico and Nevada. Services will be held on July 11, 2007 in Las Vegas, NV.

MULLINS -- Christopher Lee Mullins, a native New Mexican and avid outdoorsman, passed away on Sunday, July 8, 2007. He was a graduate of the Albuquerque Academy and the University of New Mexico. Chris will be remembered for his generous spirit, his laugh, and his love of nature. SALAZAR -- Dolores O. Salazar was called to be with the Father on July 9, 2007. She was born in Santa Fe, NM, September 15, 1928. As a young girl growing up in Santa Fe, she attended Loretto Academy. She met and married Jose M. Salazar in 1950 and moved to Los Angeles, CAwhere they resided for over 10 years. They later moved to Albuquerque where they resided ever since. Dolores raised and was a great influence over many individuals in her lifetime. There was always music, laughter and a great affection for animals. She loved children and ran a childcare for many years until her health began to decline. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leopoldo and Celia Ortiz; in-laws, Joe and Romie Salazar; brothers ,Dan, Ernesto, and Tony Ortiz; sistera-in-law, Tonie and Ramona Ortiz, Virginia and Consuelo Salazar; brothers-in-law, John B. Gomez and Juan Esquibel; and a very special niece, Michele Colon. Dolores is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, Jose; her sons, Joe Salazar, Art Salazar and wife, Roxanna, Chris Salazar; and daughter, Stephanie Lebeau and husband, Joseph, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Miranda Martinez and husband, Joey, Bernadette, Michael, and Crystal Salazar, and Tara and Dakota-John Lebeau; one great-grandson, Isiah Martinez; brother, Joe Ortiz and wife, Cruzita of Santa Fe Springs, CA; sisters, Josephine Gallegos of Albuquerque, Lupe Martinez of Kearns, UT; brothers-in-law, Hank Salazar and wife, Mary Lou of Stanley, NM, Rudy Salazar of Santa Fe, Vernon Salazar and wife, Judy of Kenner, LA, Lalo Salazar and wife, Betty of Albuquerque, Jim Salazar and wife, Angela of Murietta Springs, CA; sisters-in-law, Emily Esquibel of Cimmaron, CO, Rosalie Colon and husband, Joe of Alta Loma, CA, Tessie Ortiz of Santa Fe, and Frances Lopez of Tucson, AZ; as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins. TAFOYA -- Orlando Tafoya, 65, lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away Saturday, July 7, 2007. He is survived by his sons, Chris Perea and Randy Perea, both of Albuquerque; daughter, Stacey Lopez of Espanola; grandchildren, Chris Jr., Angela, Matthew, Alex, Amanda, and Desiree, all of Albuquerque; brothers, Richard Tafoya and wife, Doris and Frank Tafoya, all of Albuquerque; sisters, Helen Barraza and husband, Jose of Albuquerque, Toni Tackett and husband, Dick of Antioch, TN, Frances Tafoya, Patricia Johnston, both of Albuquerque, and Maxine Archuleta of Anaheim, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Tafoya was preceded in death by his mother, Maxine V. Tafoya and his father, Manuel A. Tafoya. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Tafoya attended Philadelphia Ministries in Albuquerque. TALLON -- William J. Tallon, Jr., age 84, passed away on July 8, 2007 in Albuquerque, NM. He was born to William and Esther Tallon on January 16, 1923. Bill was an Electrical Engineer for TRW in California, a Merchant Seamen for four years and traveled all over the world. He lived in Southern California for 40 years, retired in 1988, and Bill and his wife, Lenora moved to Albuquerque, NM in 1989. They have lived in New Mexico for 18-1/2 years. Bill is survived by his wife, of 37 years, Lenora and also survived by extended family on both sides. VELASQUEZ -- Daniel Aaron "Danny" Velasquez, age 12, of Albuquerque, went to Heaven, to be with his Lord Sunday, July 8, 2007. Daniel was energetic, spontaneous, and rambunctious. He lived his young life to the fullest; a risk taker, who always found himself where the action was. Danny enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, fixing things and taking them apart, and was a hard-worker. He loved helping out wherever he was needed. The 4th of July was his favorite holiday. He excelled in school. He was greatly loved by all of his friends and family. Danny is survived by his mother, Virginia Velasquez; father, Frank Velasquez; brother, Kevin Velasquez; grandma, Rachel Juarez; grandma, Elsie and grandpa, Mike Velasquez.
