MCDOWELL -- Elliott Major McDowell Sr. October 20, 1912 - March 27, 2007 How do you fit a lifetime into a paragraph? Elliott McDowell, Sr., known fondly to the world as Mac, was the embodiment of the American Dream. From his first entrepreneurial venture bringing watermelons from Cape Girardeau to Kansas City in a borrowed pick-up truck, to winning the State Championships in basketball for his high school, from being the handsomest stranger sent to Evansville to be a test pilot after training army air corps cadets to fly in WWII, to stealing the heart of the prettiest girl in town, Mac McDowell flashed his million dollar smile and the world complied. To his family he was everything, and to him there was nothing else but family. Till almost his last breath, he still would proclaim that Dorothy was the most beautiful woman in the world, and his pride in his son Junior beamed from that famous smile. He spoiled his family with much more than they could have dreamed, and was generous and trusting to almost everyone. Strong in his visions and convictions, he triumphed in businesses from used cars to gypsum mines, always with a stroke of luck and a roll of the dice. Often taking great risks, he was never one to be conservative when it came to living life to the fullest. A colossal, strong, healthy man, he survived like a warrior against cancer, two heart attacks, and being struck by lightening. The hero to him often seemed immortal. Yet, like a true Indian Chief, he knew when it was a good day to die. Although we are immensely sad and miss him terribly, I believe we all know that this powerful force of a man lived an enormous amount in 94 years, and is certainly smiling upon us now, surrounded by a gospel choir singing Amazing Grace. And indeed his life was - full of Amazing and full of Grace.

VAUGHN -- Rick Vaughn, 59, passed away on March 30, 2007. Designer extraordinaire, Rick made his mark on our city and state and was a founding partner of Vaughn Wedeen Creative. Rick lived in Albuquerque for 27 years and will be missed by the hundreds who knew him well, and by the many thousands who have been touched by him through his work in New Mexico, and throughout the country. A graphic designer by training and profession and recognized internationally for his work, Rick loved the art of graphic design. In recent years, he had applied his immense talent to the design of spaces and places, and that's where his legacy lies. His trademark designs include @25! and its signature giant exclamation mark, ABQ uptown and the Q tower, the NM Railrunner, Flying Star Cafes, the City of Albuquerque metallic city seal logo and bright yellow downtown wayfinding signage, and soon - the City of Santa Fe wayfinding signage. All these projects reflect the passion and love of life that he expressed every day. His first and abiding passion was karate. He achieved a second degree black-belt in Tae Kwon Do from the Texas Karate Institute. He was nicknamed the "Lubbock Flash with Cobra-quick Hands". He earned a rating within the top 10 in the United States. As outstanding as Rick Vaughn was as a designer and martial artist, it was no match for how outstanding he was as a human being. Nothing was as precious to him as his family and his love of God. He was quite generous at expressing and sharing his love with others and was felt by everyone he came in contact with. To know Rick, was to be loved by him. He treated his partners, his co-workers, his collaborators and his clients with caring and respect like very few can. Part dreamer, part engineer, all perfectionist, the artistic contributions made by Rick will be seen and touched for generations to come. Rick Vaughn is survived by his wife of 34 years, Ginger; son, Ian; daughter, Renee Ahern and husband, Drew; grandchildren, Dillon and Jackson; brother, Barry and wife, Gloria; nephews, Paul and Michael; mother, Clota Mae; step-daughter, Helen Wilson and husband, Steve; step-grandchildren, Melissa, Sarah, and Joe; and the countless others that love him and will miss him dearly. His father, Chester, preceded him in death. A visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at Daniels Family Funeral Services. Funeral Services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 5, 2007, also at Daniels Family Funeral Services, with burial to follow at Gate of Heaven.
